"Alan Leeds' Letter to Uptown Magazine..."

for those that don't know, Uptown magazine is a Prince fanzine that does extensive research on Prince and has published several books on the little guy. (www.uptown.se)

D’Angelo and ?uestlove meet Prince

In UPTOWN #45, we reported that D’Angelo was invited to Paisley Park in August 2000 when he was in town with his Voodoo tour. We wrote that Prince was not present because he had left for Egypt. However, Prince was there and he did meet with D'Angelo and Roots/Soultronics drummer Ahmir ?uestlove (D'Angelo's drummer on the Voodoo tour). We received this letter from Alan Leeds, D'Angelo's personal manager, which clarifies what happened.

Hello UPTOWN

Congrats on your latest issue (#45). I particularly enjoyed revisiting the Madhouse story –- something always of obvious personal interest.

A few observations on relatively current topics: D'Angelo and Ahmir ?uestlove indeed visited Prince at Paisley Park the night before our show at the Orpheum Theatre -- late the night of August 15, 2000. It wasn't exactly"D'Angelo and entourage." The visit was originally conceived as a Paisley "party" and it was explained to us by a Prince staffer that the entire D'Angelo touring entourage was invited. But once Prince's trip to Egypt firmed up, the plan suddenly changed. In fact, even after word of the party cancellation spread in our camp, several additional potential "guests" were specifically disinvited at the last minute, including ?uestlove's drum tech, James "Magoo" McGregor -- coincidentally, an ex-Prince/Paisley employee.

At Paisley Park, D'angelo and Ahmir were ceremoniously received by Prince perched in his recording studio, and later on the Paisley soundstage. Evidently their conversation pretty much consisted of a lot of unsolicited "advice" on everything from the music business to music itself.

D'Angelo and Ahmir had clearly gone to Paisley with but one agenda -- to show love and props to their idol and admitted influence. They are both huge life-long Prince fans. To jam with Prince and his band again was like a dream for them. Unfortunately, Prince chose to play mostly recent material that neither of his guests was very familiar with. I suspect they would have more enjoyed jamming on some of Prince's funkier early material but it wasn't to be. After fiddling around on
various keyboards for a couple of jams, D'Angelo felt kind of left out and excused himself to get some air while Ahmir dutifully drummed on as Prince explained the beats to some of the newer songs. I don't think either D'Angelo or Ahmir are in a hurry for a repeat visit. Despite retaining the proper composure of guests, they simply didn't feel comfortable being patronized and second-guessed for several hours. Before they left, around 5:00 am (they hadn't arrived until nearly 2:00 am), Prince explained his planned departure to Egypt would preclude him from attending the show the following night.

The D'Angelo Voodoo tour played its Minneapolis show at the Orpheum Theatre on August 16th. The audience included Larry Graham, Morris Hayes, Michael Bland, Ricky and Paul Peterson, Bobby Z. , several members of Mint Condition, and several members of Prince's current technical crew. My brother, saxist Eric Leeds, did a lengthy guest sax solo on D'Angelo's encore, "Lady." The show was sold out and Star Tribune music editor, Jon Bream, called it the best show of the year.

Several months later, I was in Richmond, VA (D'Angelo's home base) when Prince's latest tour came through (November 8). Billy Sparks made arrangements for us to attend the show but, unfortunately D'Angelo had a last-minute complication and couldn't make it. He called me during the show several times, excitedly asking, "How is it? How is it? What am I missing?" When I informed him the set list was entirely made up of older, classic Prince songs, D'Angelo was even more frustrated at
missing it. Prince had sent word earlier in the day that D'Angelo was welcome to join him on stage but even had he attended, D'Angelo had no intention of "crashing" the show. (Too bad, because the "automatic pilot" nature of the medley-prone performances could have used a shot in the arm at times).

Hope all is well with you all.

Peace!

Alan Leeds

Damn. That shit woulda hurt my feelings, man.

But in a way, what P did could be seen as a compliment. I mean, he was probably sizing them up, you know? And of course he "won", they were playing on HIS turf.

They should invite him to Sigma and see if he can play Charlie Hunter's solo on "Spanish Joint". Okay, nevermind....

Prince must've really pissed Mr. Alan Leeds off!

The "Automatic pilot" tour?!? Sounds cold to me. I wonder if Alan Leeds would say the same thing about the "automatic pilot" nature of the incredible Lovesexy shows.

On a side not, I wouldn't be surprised if Prince acted as though he were better than D'angelo and Ahmir. Fact is, D'angelo ain't shit compared to Prince.

D'arby, Kravitz, and now D'angelo to name just a few. All of these guys were supposed to be the next PRINCE. And everybody failed to meet their expectations. D'angelo's Voodoo record doesn't have a very many memorable moments on it. Nothing that makes a listener say "Holy shit! Rewind that! I gotta hear that again!"

Stop riding his dick... he ain't shit. However, I'm just as sick of Prince's new work. I hope there's an artist out there who has the balls to do the things Prince used to do. Quit talking about the past and how Motown used to play their music; look forward and play it the way it hasn't been played before.

Read "Divided Soul:Bio of Marvin Gaye. Marvin talked mad shit about Prince & Rick James ripping off his style. Shit, Marvin wanted to kick Rick ass because he thought he was fuckin Janis(ex-wife). Its just time repeating itself. Seeking inspiration from the artist before you. When we get older, some new cat will come on the scene, and we'll be sayin, " He's tryin to be D', he aint shit!" Ain't nothin new....

PS Prince new shit is WACK!!!! DAMN WHAT HAPPENIN!!

I'm sorry but D'angelo's live show sounds and looks very, very similar to Prince's 86 Parade shows. Coincidence? i think not.

Prince came out of left field when he first broke out on the scene. I could hear somebody saying that Prince looked very similar to Sly Stone. NOw, that I could agree with. Any comparisons to Marvin Gaye is silly. I don't know how where some people get this from.

However, I think what we speak about on these boards is completely irrelevant. The only topic that has any merit will be regarding the quality of the work these artists put out.

Damn, I love every minute of D'angelo's first record. It is absolutely beautiful. I love every song on that record. But Voodoo, his much anticipated sophmore record sucked! Plain and simple. Like Prince, his ground breaking demo like songs were unpolished. But the difference between Dirty Mind and Voodoo is that Dirty Mind had some amazing songs on it. Example: Uptown, Head, When U WERe Mine. Voodoo is not at all memorable.

Give it a rest. D'angelo ain't the one. He ain't next in line. He's alright... excellent cover artist: Feel Like Makin Love, Cruisin and She's Always in My Hair. But nothing original. His sound is so bland. Nothing that says "Whoa! That was awesome!"

I'd like to hear D'angelo cover U Make My Sunshine though. That would be neat. The song sounds so much like a song that could've been on the VOodoo record. One thing though. It such a better song than anything on that Voodoo record.

When I bought Voodoo, I was hoping D'angelo would answer the call. Prince is still amazing. He writes excellent songs but his sound is weak. I liked the realness of D'angelo's music. I mean the production on the record reminded me of how real music sounds. But his ideas, songs, really blow.

My dream is this: Prince write the music, D'angelo records the music using the same instruments and recording equipment he used for Voodoo and Terence Trent D'arby writes the lyrics. Now that would be bliss to my ears!!!!

well, truth be told (and i asked everyone in the camp) the parade "hit'n run" shit seems to be everyone's favorite period.
lovesexy was a different time period. prince was still considered light years ahead of his comp (not saying that he's light years now but i doubt that anyone will compare "new power soul" to the "parade" album as far as timelessness is concerned.) but clearly there is a difference between prince of 88 and prince of 01.

well. i'll put it this way. it is safe to say that i'm in the zone right now on this live breakbeat shit. few cats will ever come close to drumming the same style that i do. and as a result my work demand is high because there is a certain element of breakbeat drumming that i can achieve that most drummers can't. most of the cats who are under my umbrella are in my area of philly. and u can find most of em at black lilly on tueday nights.

one of those drummers is frank (aka knuclez) he is 22. i've known him since 16. he played beside me at the voodoo sessions and tour. and he drums for erykah now.

as far as advance is concerned he is in 6th grade. i'm in 10th. even though there are area's that he's not that strong in (still learning to play with a click track--which is hard for a begginer) but i would never ever make frank feel inferior cause i'm better at drumming than him.

i would look "weak" doing that shit.

so to play mind games with a nigga and make him feel someway bout himself just to see who's balls is bigger is...well? "weak".

sorta like a homophobe that reminds cats 24/7 he aint a fag.

sounds suspect right?

Come
Space
Dark
Letitgo
Billy Jack Bitch
I Hate U
The Same December
Sex In The SUmmer
The Love We Make
Ripopgodazippa
Acknowledge Me

Days of WIld
The Entire TRUTH Record
The Greatest Romance Ever SOld
I Love U but I don't Trust U Anymore
Come On
Mad Sex
The One
Wasted Kisses
Freaks on this side
The Exodus Record

There are still great songs coming out of this guy.

>>D'arby, Kravitz, and now D'angelo to
>>name just a few.
>>All of these guys were
>>supposed to be the next
>>PRINCE. And everybody failed
>>to meet their expectations.
>
>your expectations you mean?

No, the xpectations of a lot of people. After Sly came Prince and Rick James. After Prince... is there anyone to come? As many publications say, D'angelo is next. Try not to act as though you don't what I'm talking about. Please. You know, who's gonna carry the torch next. I hope you know what I mean.

>well, that's you. oh mighty person
>of music. i can name
>a zillion cats who are--um...losing
>sleep over voodoo. should i
>name one 4 u?

Okay, name a "zillion cats" who are um... losing sleep over voodoo! I am common folk. I have common folk friends. I have common folk impressions. None of us are losing sleep over how great Voodoo is. When I first heard the Controversy record, I was blown away by how "cool" it sounded. I loved hearing the Prince-ly noises. The ones that seperated him from the others. I think you know what I mean. This guys was from anothe world. D'angelo record, on the other hand. Well I won't comment any further on it.

>well to compare a person to
>another is mistake number one.
>i think venus williams is great.
>i think jimi hendix is
>great. but i'd never compare
>the two.

Come On Quest!! Your example tries to relate two different experts from two different fields. Not Fair to either of them. Comparing one musician to the next... now that's not that bad is it?

>name 10 albums that sound like
>voodoo. 10!

Name five amazing songs on Voodoo? Okay, maybe Voodoo has its own sound in present day company but are there any good songs on the record. What made Prince's music cool as that it sounded different and the songs were good. You know what I mean?

I live in TOronto, Canada. I play guitar. I don't know anybody here that loves the Voodoo record the way you love it. There are a couple of songs that stick out in a lot of people's minds and they are:

Feel Like Makin Love
Left and Right

Everything really doesn't... well, sounds bland. Let's hear something fresh.

anyone who thinks "left and right" is the (or even *a*) standout song on "voodoo" should be shot to death, beaten, stabbed, revived, drowned, poked in both eyes, resurrected, and strangled.

well this is suspect already. cause i can name better post 88 shit than this:

-the future
-joy in repetition (so what if it was recorded earlier, when was it available legal to the public?)
-money don't matter2nite
-sweet baby
-and god created woman
-i hate u (on your list)
-dreamin about you (call it sap but i love this sap)
-most of the truth album

>There are still great songs coming
>out of this guy.

but prince was a revoulution (big pun intended) and it was more than just the songs that made him the shizzznit.

-instrumentation and execution of such instrumentation
-engineering
-songs themselves and the arrangment of voice and music (listen to all the small parts of "what time is it?!?" for best example: lil synth lines during "the walk" skits. basswork on dialouge at the end of "wild and loose". piano chords on "giggolos...")
-patches of his instruments.

mad shit went into prince's work.

mad shit that ain't been there since.

that linn drumm shit was his for life. that was his sound!
those synths? timeless like a motherfucker. still his.
and songs?

what u gonna tell me "the work pt 1" can fuck with "let's work"?

nigga please.

after every critic says it.
after the voting academy says it.

and our peers in the industry have told us this.

not to mention the numerous times that mary, manager of electric lady studios reminds us that this album had singlehandedly brought 90% of the business electric lady gets......it's like a selling point requirement. every a and r wants the same studio room, same engineer, same backline, same mics and patch chords as the ones d'angelo has used on voodoo. no lie. wanna know why the new maxwell record is being held up? wanna know why i can take 2 weeks off to go to europe cause i can't even get into my beloved A ROOM in the east village new york? wanna know why my demand as an ENGINEER (FOR GOD'S SAKE, ENGINEER, not drummer, not producer, but ENGINEER!!!!!) is rising?

not to mention the slew of neo-soul records over saturating the market.

but should that matter? i mean, sure the people above have cried, stalked, exclaimed, proclaimed that this album has changed their whole thinking as far as music is concerned

"The Jaded Album (a review just for Fire)
Aerosmith...curse them for making jaded my new word for the year
Jaded according to www.m-w.com
1 a : to wear out by overwork or abuse b : to tire or dull through repetition or excess
2 obsolete : to make ridiculous
intransitive senses : to become weary or dulled
Yep that's what the Symbol album did to me...
The concept was cool (a story album), but I don't know maybe being a Prince fan would let you accept anything. As I always say to folks, being a Prince fan is not an easy thing.

"I changed my name because it came to me in a dream..." Yeah Prince I'm with you. Even started correcting folks. "Don't make fun of the man's wishes" Oh boy were we the fools when it all became clear that it was a legal matter instead of the bullshit that was feed to us.

This album started the wave of "when is this fool gonna make good (Revolution-like) music" questions.

Anyway onto this album...

>My Name is Prince
When I first heard this, I was like Prince is back muthafukkas! (kinda like after I heard "How'd You Get A Record Deal" by Kane. I need to stop saying those things...). Hotness and it was the beginning of many a Prince mixtapes/cds

>Sexy M.F.
All the hype came from the video they wouldn't show you (Sidenote: I would rather see Troy naked than this Halle crap...jaded I is...). The song had a nice lil funk groove, but I don't know...it just didn't move me. Where da hell are the Linns? The synths? The grafting? Don't get me wrong I liked the song but it's never on my mixtape/cds

>Love 2 the 9’s
Loved the melody. The break? heeeheeee

>The Morning Papers
??????? What da fuck is this? Ugggggh. Where's the f-fwd on this bitch???

>The Max
Heard the live version...made me like the song...

>Blue Light
HAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...F-Fwd...

>I Wanna Melt With You
Club music + Prince = FFWD

>Sweet Baby
My finger is getting a work-out here...

>The Continental
Ummm...I forgot how this song went...oh well

>Damn U
Did I say this song was a filler? Oooops. I loved this song. There were many a Damn U's in my life. (This album got one, but not in the context of this song. "DAMN U FOR MAKING ME COP THIS ALBUM!!!!")

>Arrogance
I liked the break down

>The Flow
Woooohoooooo! Tony M is rhyming! FFWD

>7
Here's a secret: If I was a terrorist locked up in a Waco type building and yall wanted me out? Play this song repeatedly over the loud speakers. I will be out before the second verse...hell even before the first verse...

>And God Created Woman
No one is fucking with this song. Only problem...why so short?

>3 Chains of Gold
Ok...Dude was listening to tooooo much Queen. I think Prince got into that "Hey I can do the same thing they're doing but better" (also this is Prince's downfall. Trying to up the ones that are out now. Nigga needs to just concentrate on doing what HE feels and not what Tim or the 'Tunes or Teddy were doing). I mean isn't funny how this song was made right after the re-surgance of the Bohoemian Rhapsody? I see you and you ARE the weakest link. Goodbye.

>The Sacrifice of Victor
You know what? This might be the realest song that Prince ever wrote (ok released cuz Old Friends For Sale...wow!). However since I'm jaded with the album by now, the light is never really seen.

Like I said...this was an ok album. I now understand how my high school teachers felt about me when I would just skate by. They know I can do better, but I would rather settle for passing instead of giving my all and get them high grades. I know Prince could have done better than this (as well as some of the current songs).

So until Emancipation...you will see a whole slew of hatred from me for the next couple of albums..."

We're ><, brah

As far as Prince goes... I say the same thing. I think Prince may have gotten lazy. The music he releases sometimes sounds like it is not finished. To me, much of the new work sounds like a good song which could've been amazing.

As for D'angelo. I'll take your word on what all those people said about Voodoo, but I still don't get it. Although, the production is neat(raw, earthly, whatever you want to call it: different then present day company) there aren't any songs on the album that really capture me. However, at this point, our own perceptions of the music is what we're really talking about. However, there is one line from that record that won't leave my mind and it's the guitar line(s) from THE ROOT. I like it but I don't like the record as a whole piece of work.

What you think of Terence Trent Darby? Personally, I think his last three records (Symphony or Damn, Vibrator, Wildcard) are far better than anything anyone has released in ages.
What you think?

By the way, I wanted to see the Voodoo tour live but it didn't come to Toronto. What happened?

One last question. What you think of Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite and Embrya? Embrya: that's production! Amazing sounds on that record. I think he's incredible but does he play?

D is leading these motherfuckers.

if you can't see the effect/change/influence that Voodoo has had on the industry since its debut....you gotta be outta your fucking mind. HELLO!!!

i believe artists that "respect the music" or "are musicians" or are on some "this is my life" type shit, checked Voodoo and were like "Holy Shit....this is some next shit!"

if you can't see how high Voodoo raised the bar for the industry as far as creativity, musicianship, aritstry, production, engineering, and lyrically...you are asleep.

they probably blast the shit outta Musiq Soulchild in canada huh? yeah...that was a ground breaking record.

No shit! But that ain't what we're talking about here. I've seen how the VOodoo record has spun out a whole bunch of similar sounding artist but my point remains; the VOodoo record does not have many "great" songs on it. Some "nice" songs but nothing to say "Wow!" about.

I'm happy that you BELIEVE this. However, I know a lot of musicians around the Toronto circuit that don't think D'angelo's record was that amazing. Can you BELIEVE that? Musicians! There are other great records out there that didn't have all the hype surrounding it that would interest many more if it had been given the hype that Voodoo was given.

>they probably blast the shit outta

Just another boring record. Sounds like it was influenced by D'angelo but nothing spectacular on it either. The first single was cool though. As for Toronto. This city is filled with excellent musicians with very fresh ideas. I can't wait until we blow up. A city is born and god bless us, cuz we funky!

Dear Octagon,

you're a little bitch.

The whole music industry is feeling it. Toronto is a big city... and there ain't no one, common folk to musician, that's feeling that boring record.

Prince was exciting... and then came who? Outkast? May be. D'angelo? To boring. Maxwell? I hope so.

but anyways, Octagon is a bitch. You're so smart eh? Thanks for clearing up all the bullshit that I was reading in all these posts... "Well these people think the record is awesome. Why don't you? There must be something wrong with you. " Does Questlove actually regard this album as something you could put up beside Purple Rain or Controversy or Sign O the Times? Wake the fuck up... go and listen to the record again... just because you drummed on the fucking coaster don't make it a good record. So biased and so blind. I'm sitting here... and can't remember too much off that record... notice, I'm still sitting here... I don't wanna get up to listen to that boring fucking coaster.

canada will never know the whole vision of this show because we had to cancel the show. (remember the blood and roses coughing in my canada review? btw where is my first half of the tour reviews at?)

so in a way i can't be mad. i'm sure that most people were convinced that d was the real thing after they saw the show.

34. "10 Album Challenge"
In response to Reply # 0

First of all, let me say that I loooooooove Voodoo. In many many ways, and more than every album on this list. More than every Prince album, and I loooooooooove Prince too.

But I want to take a stab at ?uest's challenge to "name 10 albums that sound like Voodoo"

in no particular order:

Prince- Dirty Mind
Prince- The Black Album
Sly and The Family Stone- There's A Riot Goin On
Steve Wonder- Talking Book
Funkadelic- Maggot Brain
Tricky- Angels With Dirty Faces
PJ Harvey- To Bring You My Love
MeShell Ndegeocello- Bitter
Ohio Players- Fire
Slum Village- Fantastic Volume 2
Leon Parker- Awakening
The Meters- Struttin

that's as close as I can get, and that's not really that close.

I tried, though...

Not bad company...

shuggie otis, information:inspiration, reminds me of d'angelo in its minimalist funk that pervades some of the interior tracks...that said, i think voodoo kicks ass and, while i try not to lose sleep, anyone who doubts voodoo is sleeping.

Oh really ? Then how come it hasn't rubbed off on him and Terry ? As much as I enjoyed the new Janet,I'm waiting for that Control vibe to come busting through them keyboard lines. And Terry needs to start playing the bass again, on their productions(Alexander O'Neal,Cherrelle).

voodoo compared 2 is generation his genius but compared 2 the classics voodoo has flaws cuz d doesn't let go: i mean playa playa's groove (BIG UP ?UEST!)is my favorite but why d doesn't put a solo or at least 2 cuz the song is long. there's nothin wrong wit a 7 min song but u really have 2 fasten the pace or make the axman go wild!

all 8ters have 2 recognize d 's a hell of arranger (listen 2 the end send it on!)

i think d & ? r makin what prince could not do cuz it was 2 early 4 him: blending funk & hip hop. d & ? does it better than any1. (it's hard 4 me imaginin d w/out his soul bro ?uest)

they'll go further(after 3 records)than prince cuz d is willing 2 learn from every good musicians he meet & ahmir wit his wide knowledge is steering him on lotta directions ("water no get enemy")

D' next studio album: wish list

I know my advice is nothing worth cuz d can't make nothing musically-forced, but i'm a fan -not of the man but the artist, the music, lyrics and voice- so here's what i long for:

1. a d'angelo & the SOULTRONICS album
2. slow songs/delirious funky songs
3. live drums all over the record with ahmir taking care of it ("so we won't see defeat")
4. me'shell co-writing an edgy social song & bassist for most of the songs (don't be mad at me i love pino but me'shell is just a whim of mine!)
5. d's own social songs (but i still need those ass songs...)
6. some psychedelic guitars (jef lee johnson!!! Or vernon reid… They say lewis taylor is very good too !)
7. d should use a vocal guitar (like sly 'the funkiest of all time' stone on "don't call me nigger, whitey") since d first hit the scene at the apollo using old & new instruments
8. two instrumental jam sessions (intro & middle song or end)
9. a lot of solos (guitar, horns, keybs, drums, bass)
10. a saadiq & d song (always banging!!!)
11. a wah trumpet for roy hargrove ( like miles davis' on "on the corner") at least for one song
12. a song with 2 drummers or ahmir overdubbing (see "on the corner" again)
13. another song with the boys choir of harlem, some funkafied-gospel jawn: it would do for "ghetto children"
14. keep on making that sorcery with your vocal arrangements
16. only ONE duet: badu, bilal, angie stone (shut up girls! show love!!!), macy gray, or me'shell...
17. to bring back the real funk in them clubs: outkast

that's how i see it: an album where d produces, writes lyrics & music, sings, arranges, mixes but where a bunch of musicians have a lot of fun(k) & express themselves so girls will start (a lil bit) listening to his music. i think the audience is prepared to listen to new shit, musicians music (i understand it's hard & expensive gathering all these artists for an album but can't a nigga dream?)

"it's not soul but funk with a feeling" (?uestlove)

"We may never make it to the Promised Land, but I assure you we will keep our dignity every step of the way" (?uestlove)

Voodoo is tight.
?uest is on point. Voodoo added a lot of fuel to the fire that people call Neo-Soul.

But i ain't tryin' to hear all this new, watered down formula mess. it's like when the funk was being duplicated...it was ok...but never as good as those that originated it.

D'Angelo
Maxwell
Eryka
Lauryn

They pretty much layed down a new foundation. The only one worth listening to after those four in my opinion is Jill Scott. The rest is a ceaseless humdrum.

Voodoo will be in the history books. And that's all there needs to be said.

No way will Voodoo go into any history book. Voodoo was not very good at all. It has some bright spots, but overall it's boring. Too much bass and too many voice overlays. You can't even tell what he's saying for half the damn album. Too may songs have the same tempo, same heavy bass, same sound, & same feel. The drums are too similar and the album is kinda flat.

Africa, Spanish Joint, GreatDayInTheMorning, and Untitled(give credit to Prince & the video for that one anyway) are the best cuts on the album. Besides that, it's monotonous. J_bhadra was right when he said that no one (common folk, not lonely horny groupies or family members) is bangin, or has/is been talkin high about Voodoo.

If you mention Erykah's album, folks are sayin they love it, when Lauryn's piece dropped everybody was straight diggin it, no one is/has ever really said stuff like that about Voodoo. Except mostly women fans who just wanted to see his naked-ass, and the jockriders on this site who use Okayplayer as an identity because they lack their own.

The album was not terrible, but it was by no means great or even good. Overall the shit was kinda boring. He better not wait a long time before he comes out with something else or he will soon be officially black history.

And my god, how in the hell can anyone even try to compare D'Angelo to Prince. That's so ridiculous it's funny. D'Angelo made one good album (Brown Sugar) and an overhyped mediocre one (Voodoo) and the groupies wanna compare him to a cat who has been creating and composing some of the best music you will ever hear in your damn life, for decades. No wonder D & ?uest are fans, they know who the real is. D'Angelo isn't a bad entertainer, but please, create at least 3 solid albums that the people (not your internet groupies) actually feel before you even think about comparing yourself to Prince. D'Angelo or Prince, what a joke. That's like comparing Jordan to Matt Geiger.

go do some squats and hop back into the cheekless pants...

all this nonsense about no 'street cred' is absurd...i haven't heard a wider crowd talk about an RnB/funk/hip hop album like this in ages...and it's over a year old....i got deadheads that love it, heard 'devil's pie' at a bougie club in Austin tx last night, got scottish band bass player drooling over the album, play it at a brewery in MI with numerous praises from baby boomers, kids that HATE this watered down neo soul bullshit.but LOVE voodoo..

not that you need to love voodoo..but respecting muscianship and quality is different

you just sound bitter and angry like your ol' boy

maybe if prince were releasing bangers all his nutriders wouldn't come over here to diss voodoo with such animosity....

True. But since we're comparing, thought I might as well give my opinion. Though they are VERY very different, I still prefer Voodoo as in which one I would prefer to listen to, or listen to MORE often.
To me, Embrya was like M's 'Voodoo', he kinda went an extra step into something surreal. Something new, but old and inventive at the same time. And D the same. Just when it comes to the crunch, I end up spinning Embrya a zillion times while Voodoo sits in my collection and makes it look nice. (no disrespect...)
...nahmean?

Embrya - made the music liquid, so it seeps into you.
Voodoo - made it hard and raw (& funky?) so it gets belted into u.
Both ahead of its time, perhaps? I'd say so.
Still, if there was a choice, I'd choose Embrya (while also recognising the brilliance of Voodoo, so no flames n shit)

believe what you want to believe...but people are gonna realize that Voodoo IS a treasure.

i didn't even LIKE D'angelo before voodoo. To me, he was just another cat doing some jiggy R&B ish. i was feelin' a few tracks from Brown Sugar, but Voodoo dropped a bomb on my ass. TOTALLY unexpected from D'Angelo. And you can't tell me you expected Voodoo...no one saw it coming, and for me, it was like...all right then...there's more to this man than i thought.

JUST SO NO ONE GETS IT TWISTED:

i DON'T and NEVER WILL dick ride anyone. and i think most okayplayers that come here are about music NOT about, "how can i get minez."

if i ever ask ?uest something, it's cause i value his opinion.

if i ever ask Prince something, it's cause i value his opinion.

i got my own voice, and my own song.

so before anyone tosses an indirect "dick rider" in my direction, read my muh'funkin' posts!

thank you.

I think many people have already realised this. Just cos someone hates it (and with a passion!) doesn't mean it gives Voodoo appreciators excuse to damn the guy for blaspheming. It's just that some people don't think it's as great as it's all hyped up to be. I for one loved it. And I think ppl also embraced it cos it was totally different to what we were hearing last year (gee, sounds like such a long time ago...)

Plz don't be discouraged by some members of this board if they're opposed to an okayartists material. I believe its possible to talk it out normally..? Like why Embrya ia better than Voodoo...

Gee...I distinctly remember saying "EMBRYA" was the one I listened to more often...either the mods got a hand in this or I fucked it up.
Aaanyway....

65. "Apologizes from a prince "fam""
In response to Reply # 0

Just wanted to say that as a prince "fam", I truly feel ashamed by his attitude towards D and ?, and even more so by the attitude of a few prince fanatics who feel comfortable with this. Prince obviuosly feels threatened in some way (even if he will forcefully deny it like in the "undisputed" remix), hence this misplaced reaction. But this "huge ego problem" is not a new issue, and it his precisely what is leading him right into the wall.

It is a truly sad story, because they would surely make incredible work together. Instead of despising the new generation, prince should put his ego aside and do what Miles Davis (one of his idols by the way) was able to do at the end of the 60s : refresh his sound and focus on the future of music by working with the most talented musicians/producers of his time. That would open a whole new carreer to him, but I doubt he'll be able to.

And I wanted to say I LOOOVVVVEEE Voodoo. It is a landmark album, a "What's Goin' on" of the 2000s, and people (even prince fans) will finally realize that. The critics (no uptempo jams, no "hits", old-fashioned sound) are obviuosly misplaced. I hope they come from people who listened to the album only once or twice, cuz you know, you have to get into it and stop sleeping if you want to be hypnotized : It is truly a "Voodoo" album! The album is modern, the off-beat drumming is off the hook, so stop dissing! I hope the next one will be in the vein of Common's "Time Traveling" or "Coldblooded", which are even better than anything on Voodoo (except Africa : amazing song. Just a personal opinion though), and pave the way for the future....

Peace
