"Common vs B.Kyle ~ The Interpretation!"

Since I had him cornered in the back-seat of the car while on our way to the mall, I just had to get us some info...

“I started thinking, how many souls hip-hop has affected, how many dead folks this art resurrected...”~ lyric from LWFC

B.Kyle: You said, “How many dead folks this art resurrected...”

Common: Yeah.

B.Kyle: What went behind those lyrics... in that line? Because I have my own interp... I was moved by it, and..

C: Tell me what you interpreted, brugh.

BK: I wanna know what you thought.

C: (Laughter) Naww, I...

BK: (laughter) ‘Cause YOU wrote it!

C: I wanna know what you thought.

BK: Naww, cause this is probably gonna be the right answer, and I wanna see if in fact I interpreted it correctly or not.

C: (Giving in) All I was sayin was it’s like, a lotta dead men walking. It’s a lotta people that ain’t aware, that aint conscious, you know? That’s like mentally dead. And it’s saying that this art has like awakened a lotta people to a lot of things… including myself. So I was saying that this art has resurrected the people in a sense. Cause man, I was a pork-eatin’, no knowledge-of-self type ni**a... until I heard Rakim and KRS1.

BK: Right, right, Okay.

C: So what did you interpret it as? (In the ‘now it’s ya turn’ tone)

BK: My interpretation hit two fold. One was from the standpoint of those Afro-American or Spanish kids in the communities where they don’t have a voice, hip-hop music has lent them the opportunity to voice their frustrations, or thoughts, or ideas… as a way of expression. So they were kinda, in a way, spiritually and socially dead...

C: ...and resurrected. YEAH. YEAH. That's fresh.

BK: Right, so they were socially resurrected through this hip-hop form.

C: Naww, I ugh...

BK: That was one of them.

C: That’s dope. I didn’t feel like we was dead, but I definitely feel like this is a way for us to express ourselves. It IS. (pause) But what else… (fishing for more) what was your other one.

BK: The other way was within the music itself. By sampling older music, it has brought those… artists that may have been deceased, you sample their music and you put it into hip-hop. And it’s a way of giving rebirth to those previous musicians.

C: Awww, I wasn’t thinking that way. Yeah. But that’s DOPE, though.

BK: I was like damn, hip-hop has resurrected this old music that’s been dead, and no one has paid attention to it, but it’s resurfacing through hip-hop.

C: Yeah...

BK: ... so hip-hop is bringing life to the dead.

C: That’s real though. I mean, I felt like it was resurrecting the spirits of the ancestors though, in a way. Like, they are definitely coming through, through our music. They are letting a lot of things be known. But, yeah, your interpretation is fresh. I wish I woulda thought of that.

BK: Now that’s why I didn’t want to give my reason first, ‘cause you woulda been like, “Hmmm, that’s EXACTLY where I was coming from!”

C: (More laughter) Nawww, Brian. You funny dude!

~~~~~~
Well... so there we have it. HOLLA! (I'll be back w/ more)
Brian 'B.Kyle' A.
You know in the last part in the line I thought he was reffering to alot of old artist that were slept on, under appreciated, misunderstood, or out of the spotlight until hip hop reintroduced to the world.
That was my interpretation.
I kinda felt COM was referring to some of these r&b cats and old school legends careers being revived, due to hiphop.
Ms.Fat Booty/Mos DEF ;A rose is still a rose w/lauryn hill- Aretha Franklin
I jus left NYC and lyrisist lounge featured Roy ayers (too long on the DL)
Mos Def revived Weldon Irvine... at least to me! CLASSIC MATERIAL
I can nod in agreement with BKyle that I shared a portion of those same interpretations. I even thought of another explanation of what Com may have meant.
When I thought of it...he also spoke of how many cultures the art connected, and I instantly thought of how life is a constant and therefore an everlasting cipher or cycle that is incessant. With that in mind, hip hop is not only a voice but the ears of the world. Being the ears of the earth allows it to not only speak of things, but to listen and invoke experiences as well. I guess I thought of the fact that artists are now invoking the past and using it to manifest the present and the future if that makes any sense. Especially for artists using the past statements, songs, concepts and works of other artists whether unheard of or dead and redeveloping them into newer contexts. I know Kweli happens to do this alot and it helps people embrace an older sense of things with a newer found awareness. There are alot of people who have gone back to read texts that were written over hundreds of years ago, gone back and viewed movies lost in time and traveled back in some sort of spiritual time warp in appreciation of Steven Biko, Harriet Tubman, Zora Neale Hurston and even artists lesser known like a Shuggie Otis...
But anyways...its all a matter of perception...
This line caught my attention when I first listened to the song, but I've got to admit I didnt't think much about the last part, except maybe that he was referring to his ancestors like he does in some other songs. But I never got any sense out of that last part. It just sounded so damn good! But I'll learn from this and start thinking about the parts I don't understand, because there's obviously a deeper meaning behind them.
I don't see the "dead men" as actually dead people from the past, but people like everyone else who go about their business not stopping to appreciate what they have inside them already. Maybe they've been abused and are now blinded to the gift of love The Creator gave them. Or maybe they just don't want to look inside themselves and take the bad with the good.
But like all good art that challenges you, Hip hop and especially the lyrics can cause you to open your eyes to see who you truely are. That's what its done for me with lyrics like
"I can give a damn if my fam recalls my legacy, I'm trying to live my life in the sight of God's memory . . ." Mos Def
or the way the music hits you, like what do you feel when the finger snaps come in on the begining of Act Too (The love of my Life)or the bass line or when Marie Daulne (refer to liner notes from Things Fall Apart) erie bgv comes in.
Personaly music affects me alot, but anything(including Hip Hop)
that can open your eyes to the truth is always good in my book.
I'm Joe Moreno and that's my interprettyation
I start thinking, how many souls hip-hop has affected
How many dead folks this art resurrected
I thought it meant all the gangstas, hustlas, drug dealers, people who would've ended up dead had hip hop not been there to give them other options in life...that these people would've ended up dead or in prison (which is another form of death too) so selling records had switched their life's direction around, so that they wouldn't have to be selling drugs, robbin' stores, etc...but that's just my opinion...
hip hop brought back artists that people might not have ever heard because of their death or because it was recorded so long ago. It ressurrected artists. But his vision of it is nice too
“I started thinking, how many souls hip-hop has affected, how many dead folks this art resurrected...”
I t is a lil' more DEEP to me "Introspectively". I mean.........First when my man says "how many souls Hip Hop has affected" means to me in two ways....alot of people are mindless clones out here who follow whatever is being fed to them on the airwaves whether it being Fantasy Video Visions of how that "clones" life should resemble in their eyes or the Radio Regergitation "Followers" tend to Spit out after months of Listining Conciously on Unconciously!
People tend to feel more comfortable being BLIND SHEEP following trends and other peoples standards of "what's in", "how to live thier own life", and "what is acceptable or not to use in thier daily Vocabulary!" INSTEAD OF THINKING WITH OUR THIER OWN MINDS.
I see it affect peoples attitudes, everchanging spoken terminologies, and how they literally live their life! It's a Damn shame to me at times how I see people around me in the world and .....(sometimes even catch myself) subliminally walking what we hear or see on the airwaves 24-7!
But the Gov't/Media/Big Coorperations know this. (That's why they feed what they want us to consume!)
IF THEY KNOW OUR THOUGHTS...... THEY KNOW WHICH OF OUR ACTIONS SHALL FOLLOW!!! And that something we should look at. (Spooky ain't in a conspiracy outlook kinda way!)
"how many dead folks this art resurrected...”
At the sametime, I myself have been reserected out of a "State of Death" or " Stagnate Deppression" as if thru a "African Ceremonial Ritual" with the "Healling of Music" or "Awakening thru Harmony" like in Ancient Egyptian or"Kemet" days. (All just by really listining to Hip Hop!)
Listening to Hip Hop whether being an inspirational song on Radio or a Concious Song from any real UnderGround Hip Hop Artist! At times has helped me heal in a SPIRITUAL way when all I've had was myself and my GOD given INNERVOICE to feed my Soul! Sometimes I've been so depressed when times got rough for me that when listening to Hip Hop I could relate to at certain times has given me hope and helped me Keep it Moving when life situations seemed Hopeless.
Hip Hop has been there for me and made it easier for me to grow (or reincarnate)in life and at the same time hear GODS messege to me when I was lost in a Darkness!
Hip Hop is a Strong Power. Perhaps a Gift from GOD himself! It's our RESPONSIBILITY to use it to help eachother out and Grow as a people!
HIP HOP=Universoul Language
