"Ursula Rucker gives me nightmares"

she frightens me. I always skipped past those tracks she did on Roots albums after the first time I heard them. Maybe I'm the only one... Best of luck to her though.

me nightmares. Seriously, it's like on one of the Roots album((...I believe Illadelph Halflife)), he comes on after a hidden track like 5 minutes after the album stops, and makes some kung--fu noises. S--- was terrifying the first time I heard it!
I was like I don't ever "...ever' eva' eva'©<--Chris Tucker" want to hear that again!

...But Ursula is dope none the less. "Return to Innocent Lost" is the s---

Chorus:
every second of
every minute of
every hour of
every day of
my life
I stayed plugged and away from fake thugs
celebrate
make love
Ya'll STAY UP

Verse 1:
My people rise we immune to the evil eye
we in the times when mosquito bites make people die
birds falling out the sky from the pesticides
we survive with no time for the wonder why
get high, get fly, get wonderful
rock earth tones, language is colorful
walking light with the big sticks through the night
find a beautiful life through usual strife
we throw change-ups
now it's time to switch the game up
Brooklyn lick-shot
let the heaters spit the flame up
mentioning those who came up
always bringing Kweli name up
we off the hook
these other cats got hang ups

Chorus

Verse 2:
people came from fourty acres and a cheap mule
none of what we do
is smoke blunts, drink forties, get paper and keep to
crews carry out justice with street rules
keep what they need to, pay deep dues to heap few
murder machines
designer jeans we bleed through
he weak fools in the elite few are see-through
you peep who's fake if your eyes are keen to reality
you see who cling to the mind state of fallacy
they can't face the tragedy of spiritual depravity
ya'll see the situation but you don't know the gravity
I mastered the response by following the calling
the light shining behind me casting shadows on the fallen four
every second of the night we wrecking clubs
getting people's hands up above
get respect and love worldwide

I bitch-slap mics, raise my voice and continue like that

Chorus

Verse 3:
rocking and shocking the house
Youngblood brass band

As far as me really getting into the Roots, it was backwards. So the same would apply to Ursula. My favorite was the peice she did on "Do U Want More." I'm looking forward to hearing it.

Jesus was Black ya'll...no joke.

The worst Okayplayer mistake my friend ever made? I went with three of my friends to the Saturday Oakland Okayplayer show back in November. Anyway, we got separated into groups of two during the show, and after the show, we couldn't find each other, and after spending a weekend together, me and my sistas were a little testy anyway. Not finding each other directly after the show further aggravated the situation. So anyway, one of my friends was hella pissed, and decided to walk in front of all of us. On the way back to the car, she pushed through a group of brothas who were chillin' by the side of the theater, hella mad-doggin' folks, and one of the dudes (shorter, light-skinded) in an effort to cheer her up said, "Hey, smile!" She turned around and gave this dude the ugliest, most sarcastic smile in the world, and then kept walking. After walking in utter silence for a block, one of my other friends who watched the exchange said, "Why did you dis Scratch like that?"

All jokes aside....

Grow the fuck up.

On second thought, I take that back - at least you're being honest.

Hope you weren't offended by that statement.

I'm just SO tired of these "so-called" hip-hop heads who want mindless headbangin' hip-hop and expect The Roots to give it to 'em.

Call it what you want (dick-riding, jocking or whatever else is slang for compliments) but a new Roots album to me is an event. Hell, they only do one every three years. Having Ursula on their albums completes the cycle or creativity.

So to everybody else - before you even think about posting somethin' bad about the creative force known as Ursula Rucker, keep this thought in mind:

PEOPLE FEAR WHAT THEY DON'T KNOW OR UNDERSTAND...THE PRODUCT OF THAT FEAR AND/OR IGNORANCE IS RIDICULE. THIS IS DONE SO THEY DON'T LOOK STUPID TO EVERYONE ELSE. LIVE4SELF.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, talented and fabulous
Actually, who are we not to be

You are a child of God
Your playing small doesn't serve the world
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other
people won't feel insecure around you
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us

It is not just in some of us: It's in everyone
And as we let our own light shine
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same

As we are liberated from our fears
Our presence automatically liberates others

After one soul-scraping, innocence-grabbing listen to any of her three Roots album appearances, you need hours to recover from deep melancholia and months to be able to listen to the track again. I would really like to hear her do a happy poem.

Ursula and a "...happy.." piece of poetry would definitely be something different. I believe the poems she writes are suppose to be deep and emotional((...almost scary)), so that the listener is taking in to her world.

"...She pimps her innocence as second one demands entrance, in to the back door, bind over 'b---h, you know this is what you were born for!"
--Ursula Rucker "The Unlocking"

...Her spoken word poetry is fierce. It's meant to make a stand, or for a social, political form of awareness((..sex, drug dealing, brutality)) ! So much depth is placed inside her poetry, her voice is really soothing. So soothing that when she speaks her poetry, it comes off as being really heart felt or emotional, some what "...scary"!

"...I'm the modern day vixen vampire slayer, unauthorized player, in the capitolist contest to see who get's money.."
--Ursula Rucker "The Adventures In Wonderland"

"...Plunge deep into religion was my first decision, to save me and my daughters lives, but I can't trive off spirit and scripture, the picture grew clearer, I made the move to rear her in a life wanting for nothing, so I got into this drug thing, not doing but dealing.."
--Ursula Rucker "The Adventures In Wonderland"

She really takes you with her in her poems.

"Still the good mother, I sent my daughter off to boarding school, to keep s--- undercover, all the while envisioning myself a champion of ghetto causes, 'cause this game I was playing, and winning, while sinning against myself and soul to get the gold.."
--Ursula Rucker "The Adventures In Wonderland"

She is an excellent poet. Can't wait for the album to drop!

and we don't - do it for chains or do it for cars
and we don't - do it for lames or do it for broads
and we don't - do it for fame we do it because
it's for the young, black, gifted mind
livin' the story of the most twisted kind
turbulent times swirled around they dome like a turban
it gets disturbin'...feelin' alone in the urban...."

received many repeats on my stereo system.

...The best that I have heard from Ursula by far, well not that far.

--Talib Kweli
"Ya'll Stay Up"

Chorus:
every second of
every minute of
every hour of
every day of
my life
I stayed plugged and away from fake thugs
celebrate
make love
Ya'll STAY UP

Verse 1:
My people rise we immune to the evil eye
we in the times when mosquito bites make people die
birds falling out the sky from the pesticides
we survive with no time for the wonder why
get high, get fly, get wonderful
rock earth tones, language is colorful
walking light with the big sticks through the night
find a beautiful life through usual strife
we throw change-ups
now it's time to switch the game up
Brooklyn lick-shot
let the heaters spit the flame up
mentioning those who came up
always bringing Kweli name up
we off the hook
these other cats got hang ups

Chorus

Verse 2:
people came from fourty acres and a cheap mule
none of what we do
is smoke blunts, drink forties, get paper and keep to
crews carry out justice with street rules
keep what they need to, pay deep dues to heap few
murder machines
designer jeans we bleed through
he weak fools in the elite few are see-through
you peep who's fake if your eyes are keen to reality
you see who cling to the mind state of fallacy
they can't face the tragedy of spiritual depravity
ya'll see the situation but you don't know the gravity
I mastered the response by following the calling
the light shining behind me casting shadows on the fallen four
every second of the night we wrecking clubs
getting people's hands up above
get respect and love worldwide
international, son of the black national
and pan-african coming back again over soul beats
pack heat like the sunshine
hold beef for one time
no peace ever since justice become blind
that bitch act like she can't see what we been through
I bitch-slap mics, raise my voice and continue like that

Chorus

Verse 3:
rocking and shocking the house
Youngblood brass band
hot and we knocking them hot
Kweli from Brooklyn and we
drop from the top to the south
so what now?
Showing you all what it's all about
in the language of those that blast before they talk it out

Everybody is talking about Rucker's "deep" pieces on the Roots albums. The equivalent of that on the album, if there has to be one, would be "Song For Billy". I'm not going to compare the intensity of it to the other tracks she did for the Roots, but it is on that level. The great thing about SUPA SISTA though is that unlike in the past, where her pieces were followed by a Roots surprise, this time we get to hear her end things on her own, with the hidden "I Keep Secrets" (which somehow, is appropriate as a "hidden" track). It's almost as if to say "I just took you deeper than I have ever taken you, now let's ease up but... I'll do it one last time, until next time."

This woman I was talking with at the school, was telling me about this piece not to long ago. She is really heavy into spoken word/slam poetry. Damn, now I'm really eager to hear more Ursula! She told me to check for Saul Williams' new album. But honestly, I believe he((<--Saul)) is getting repetitive with his work. Could be wrong..

...You heard the album?

<<hmmmmm'>>

...Is the Saul Williams' album out?

Haven't heard the new Saul Williams album (it's out in the UK, but with the demise of Rick Rubin's american label, there is no US outlet yet), but I have the 12". A former friend of mine has his album, and she plans to play some of the tracks on her radio show in Honolulu this Wednesday. She goes by the name of Joan9, and she hosts a show called "The Abstract Beat Workshop". Click to ktuh.org for details. There's a six hour time difference from Hawai'i to the East Coast, but anyone who enjoys good quality college radio should take a quick listen to KTUH (who offer Real Audio streaming).

If anyone in Europe has Saul's album, how about a quick review?

Thanks yall, I wasn't feeling her like some folks. I think she is an incredible talent but I was not MOVED by it (4 a lack of better words). She is "head of her time" I give you that and I only gave it one liten through, so I don't have a valid oppinion yet. After seeing JAG ( who I thought would be the next Featured Artist). I still am undicided about Ursula. PS. Look foward to hearing more stuff from her. One

From the works I've heard by her (and I'll admit to not hearing it all), any sexual terms she has used in her pieces have been just that, "terms". It's part of the piece. Words are made to be interpreted in many ways, which is how poetry should be. You can either take it at face value, or try to figure it out and come up with your interpretation. Within her serious side is a romantic side, and along the way a very humorous side, as she shows in "Philadelphia Child".

I hope SUPA SISTA will at least open up the awareness of poetry and the spoken word across the U.S., and North America. There's a lady from Canada named Cyn* who has some interesting things to say, she does a piece called "You Taste Better When I'm Drunk" that is worthy of a listen. Cyn*'s site is at ihaveasecret.com, for those who wish to take a listen.

it's not the "Straight up sex" i'm talkin bout, its more about the subject matter i couldn't take a whole album of. but some examples of the "straight up sex:"

"mommy's crying and bleeding and pleading and then... daddy want's to fuck. dick hard swollen with power rush. and as if all that wasn't enough, mommy's 7 months heavy w/ birth. as daddy grunts and curse..."

and then we all know how "return..." goes on w/ the descriptions of daddy and cookie, and it's not "particulary" the downfalls of fucking, its just the disgusting circumstances that come with it.
anything else you can pick apart from that?!?!

...and unfortunately it didn't do much for me (and I'm a big fan of her work with the Roots, as well as the stuff she put down for 4Hero). Dunno, the music is just a bit to "nice" and coffeeshopish (if that is a word). "Song For Billy" is amazing, though. It's a shame, cause I got a lot of respect for what these new spoken word artists are trying to achieve with their music, but somehow they all fail to deliver strong albums. Sauls album was mad disappointing to me as well. Too much weak pseudorock stuff (and I'm not one of those heads who run for cover everytime I hear a guitar).

wonder why, daddy left you
to his life so wrong they do
to his life so wrong they do

Raw sewage is how they’ve viewed his… life
So wrong is how they do his… life
Where to begin with all the tales of sin and strife
Black gold miners, missionaries — murderers
dethroned him from his home
Chief to slave
King to cotton picker
Warrior… to un- whole
3/ 5
shipped
brown shit
hog spit
piss
whipped…
wings clipped
blips on the screen of America

Tuskeegee Airmen and experiment recruits
Strange fruits and Strangers in the Village
Recipients of palefaced pawing and pillage
Black not beautiful, black like oil spillage
Diminished to 3/ 5 of whole
His truth shall be told
His truth should be told
little all shades of brown boy
daddy loves you
little all shades of brown boy
wonder why daddy left you
How would anyone… feel… deal
after centuries of…
humiliation, displacin’, castration…
discrimination…
separated him
from manhood and kin
An eagle — amongst chickens
One can only imagine
envision
such imprisonment
Whisked
from bountiful to spartan
Forced to exist on the margin
Epic memory stricken with the disease of conditioning
Raising families in the midst of hate,
Accused of rape,
Dicks severed… served upon a plate
stuck in the mouths of their oppressors
food for the fueling of…
Hell’s fire
What would you do?
You might leave too if…
You were beat in front of your woman and sons,
helpless as sons swung
from ungiving trees,
under the southern… sun
What would you do?
You might leave too
What would you do?

to his life so wrong they do
to his life so wrong they do
to his life so wrong they do
to his life so wrong they do
little all shades of brown boy
daddy loves you
little all shades of brown boy
wonder why, daddy left you
to his life so wrong they do
to his life so wrong they do

No wonder some have run from,
omen of failure
arms of lovers
paternal commitment…
erased themselves from child’s vision
Ashes to ashes… dust to dust
all to naught… first man to invisible man, then
back again
the vicious cycle
May the imperfect circle be now broken
it was designed for your choking
Breathe
Receive the sovereign legacy of your history
Embrace past’s misery…
For the purpose of strengthening, not excusing
Ida B. fought for
Martin died for
Emmet Till paid a price
eyes have cried for…
your life
What will you do with your life???
Be the kings you born to be
Be the fathers your brown boys need
Be those kings you were born to be
Be the fathers your brown boys need…

They say, young black boys bloom thorns first
reach and compete for an illusory elixir
quickfixers, cock tales are told and sold as
basic low vibratory animalistic behavior
resurrect from blood root trees
manufactured dis- ease and line chalk
demonstrate god walk
may your reflection be your savior
all shades of brown boy
little all shades of brown boy
daddy loves you
little all shades of brown boy
daddy loves you
little all shades of brown boy
daddy loves you
all shades

She's gifted, no doubt, but...

-Her monotone voice is eerie.
-The background music is usually kind of spooky.
-Her subject matters are always terrible, terrible, terrible (not as in poorly done, I mean "go get the gun it ain't even worth no mo" terrible)

Luckily, "Return to Innocence Lost" on my copy of TFA skips, so I always stop the album after "Don't See Us."

Unfortunately, this also means that sooner or later I'm going to buy another copy.

So all things considered. If I'm browsing and have the loot, I'll buy Rucker's album if I happen to see it. But I'm not going to go out of my way to get more nightmares about rape and murder and terrible, terrible, terrible.

Did the Roots hook her up for a track or two?

i agree w/the dope part...but the staccato part has me baffled...i think her voice is more melodic...i heard she is doing a show in long island city at ps1 today...you should go check her out...just maybe you'll get a different view...
