"Common's wackest line?"

I'm not saying he's wack by any means. He's my favorite MC. I was just wondering if there is any lines that stand out or make you cringe when you here them... not counting Can I Borrow A Dollar. (Not that it's wack) The very beginning of This Is Me used to get to me, but it doesn't really bother me anymore. It's almost like he's trying to sound like someone who can't rap.

That whole verse is weak especially after the controlled flame that Mos and Bilal bring to it. That line about the girl on the Jamaica poster came off real corny too. A rarity for Com tho. My favorite MC as well.

Completely feel you on that Jamaica poster shit. That definitely had to be a rush job on that. I love com, but they could have left him off of that with that there. "Controlled flame" is a good way to describe Mos and Bilal. both of them stayed in the pocket. In fact, I'm finna play that right now.

Ditto. Nuff said.

"Yo...on The Amen, Corner I stood, lookin at my former hood. Felt the spirit in the wind, knew my friend was gone for good. Threw dirt on the casket, the hurt, I couldn't mask it
Mixin down emotions, struggle I hadn't mastered. I coreograph seven steps to heaven. And hell, waiting to exhale and make the bread leavened. Veteran of a cold war It's Chica-I-go for. What I know or, what's known. So some days I take the bus home, just to touch home. From the crib I spend months gone. Sat by the window with a clutched dome listenin' to shorties cuss long. Young girls with weak minds, but they butt strong. Tried to call, or at least beep the Lord, but didn't have a touch-tone
It's a dog-eat-dog world, you gotta mush on. Some of this land I must own
Outta the city, they want us gone Tearin' down the 'jects creatin plush homes. My circumstance is between Cabrini and Love Jones. Surrounded by hate, yet I love home. Ask my God how he thought travellin the world sound Found it hard to imagine he hadn't been past downtown. It's deep, I heard the city breathe in its sleep. Of reality I touch, but for me it's hard to keep. Deep, I heard my man breathe in his sleep. Of reality I touch, but for me it's hard to keep"--Common

10. "Common told me...."
In response to Reply # 7

... well actualy, I had to ask him what the hell was on his mind and what motivated, "a dikka da dikka da dikka didda di-da"
at the end of "the light"?

He told me it took him about two to three days to write 'The Light' 'cause he would write a lil... and then come back to it a lil later. While in the studio recording, he was laying down the vocals for the last verse but had NOT completed the lyrics. He filled in that gap with the tempo, pace, and beat but without words. He was gonna add some lyrics to that same paced delivery, but could think of how to end this letter to a lover... and what came out was, "a dikka da dikka da dikka didda di-da". He said that some people in the studio suggested he keep it as is. (WHY I don't know. I wasn't there)

So he did.

He stated that "I'll tell u the rest when I see you" was added to bring an element of him wanting to write more of his over-whelming feelings towards her in the letter, that he couldn't harbor them all and put it writing... so he had to tell her the rest in person.

Common told me this while in Portland on tour. I thought I talked aboutthat a while back. hmmm, my bad

The question is, what was he doing in the circle of faggots to hear the name? JK.

But I thought the line from "I Used to Love H.E.R", where he said "...and you can tell by how her titties hung" was the wackest. It was the only earsore in an otherwise perfect song, it didn't really flow with the double entendre theme in the song.

but it does!!! it was one of those lines that i didn't get until like the 100th time i heard it. listen again--right before, he says something like:

"...she was becoming WELL-ROUNDED
just havin fun, not carin about anyone
and you could tell by how her titties hung."

but i agree, i have to grimmace when he says that and my girlfriend is listening.

Hip-hop doesn't have titties, so how could that line be a double entendre?

hip-hop does NOT have to actually POSSESS titties in order for that line to qualify as a double entendre. a double entendre is simply a play on words or a pun. or according to webster, if you prefer, "a word or expression capable of two interpretations with one usually risqué". WELL-ROUNDED by itself is a phrase with more than one interpretation, which common invoked here. it's even slightly risqué. text book double entendre son!! WHAT!?!?!!!

Ok, mr. muhfuckinknowitall, you still didn't answer my question. I didn't question the double meaning or as Mr. Webster put it "the interpretive nature" of "well rounded". So once again, explain to me how "how her titties hung" could have double meaning or be open to interpretation. Then when you're done with that show me how that isn't inconsistent with the rest of the song.

i know i didn't. my point is that your question is irrelevant. you're asking the wrong questions. hip hop doesn't have to have tities, they don't have to sag, nor does "how her tities hung" have to have multiple interpretations. READ THIS: the double entendre is well-rounded, NOT titties. the lines about titties is merely a continuation of the double meaning of well-rounded. get your shit straight fucker ... (c) jay-z

i'm through educating you.

a chick that doesnt wear a bra you could describe as free with hers

you could tell by how her titties hung- hip-hop became fun not worried about anyone, just a thing of freedom, pretty much summing up the days before shit got commercial (verse 3)

it wasnt that difficult to decipher

I mean, just the way he says, "yo HEY" in that one part's always made me a little urked. But he's one of the illest and that song's tight regardless. Peace, Asana

and i don' care what ANYBODY says about its intent or the message, "a song for assata" is straight up BOOTY! it's all wack... comm's just on a narrative tip there... doesn't bring anythin' new to the story... i've always been told in writing, if you're gonna tell someone else's story, bring something new to it... not that you have to make shit up... but something besides just a retelling of it...

...the story I think put's something new to it. I never heard it before he told it so it did it's place with raising the awareness of it. I've definitely listened to that track and been like, "did he just get away with that lyric?" But as a lyricist myself, I'm impressed because that's a really hard thing to tackle. Plus, the singers in that track are WAYYY to over the top for my taste. But it's tight nonetheless. Peace, Asana

"As we got older we would...and bang fags" Common "nuttin to do" what does he say in the middle of that line???

and what does he say earlier in the song "it would be hot as hell, house studs would yell_____!" what does he say???

and how bout the begining of the song "check it on the 1 common's gonna come" what's that all about???

anyway, it's still one of my favorite Common songs.

I listened to that song about five times one day trying to see what the hell he was talkin' about on that song. I was like is it"bang fads" or "bang fags." I'm just gonna try to chalk that one up to Chicago slang.

now watch me catch flack 'cause this song was intended to be uplifting and inspirational, but...

the line that always bothers me in that song is:

"some say that god is black and the devil is white
well, the devil is wrong and god is what's right..."

*dr evil laugh*... it's just sooo simplistic. and the fact that he sounds so serious, makes it all the more funny to me.

now let the chastising begin.

i'm going to hell.

coming soon...jerome jenkins raises his fist:

-obsidian, huey p. newton
-l-o-quent, bobby seale
-thaf, eldrige cleaver
-the girl hope, elaine brown
-'sani, fred hampton
-the girl nicole, angela davis
-oliver, george jackson
-the girl cammy, ericka huggins
-lavelle, bunchy carter

jerome jenkins © getting black at you since 2000. right on!

i know this post is dead, but was listening to lwfc yesterday and heard my all time most hated line and had to share...

as we begin to lay
this foundation for a family - love ain't simple
...anything worth having you work at annually

huh? why annually? cause it rhymed? but so does daily, or any other -ly.

i always wince when i hear that one.

d be like we aint got no time for that
?uestlove be alike we aint got no time for that
my old bird be like we aint got no time for that

bad on 2 levels
1) This is not the way to go, at the time trying to keep your courtship under wraps but naming soulquarian members and then saying "my old bird" along with other members of the collective

2) bars are supposed to rhyme not repeat themselves, sigel is the sickest at making one word rhyme with itself meaning like 4 different things.

sigel would be like
i aint playin with chicks
im playin with bricks
not only playin with them bricks, but playin with bricks

and he'd be clever enough to make each time mean something else
