So after 4 canceled shows I'm ready to come home. Detroit felt good simply
because we hadn't done a show in so long, and, after all, it's about the
music, right?
So Mr. M gets the bright idea to "throw a party" for Alicia Keys. That means
he makes the phone calls, visits clubs to find the right spot, hires the DJ,
makes sure the band has transportation, makes sure she and her band has all
the presents, right? Yeah, right.
Meanwhile, after searching Toronto and maybe deciding a little too early that
this club was THE club, I decided that I needed at least a fly DJ to cover in
case attack-of-the-hootchie-mamas happened.
T: "Shmear"
?diddy: "What up?"
T: "I need you to fly to Toronto to DJ Maxwell's party"
?diddy: "When?"
T: "ummm, tomorrow?"
?diddy: "HAHAHAHHA....wait, you see Nelly Furtado up there?"
T: "yup. she coming too (fingers crossed), I mean I saw her tonight anyway.
She says Hey!"
?diddy: "Let me know about the tix"
Whoever said the WTC disaster brought ticket prices down was a fool.
SOUNDCHECK:
M's in a bad mood. Damn. So much for feeling out his party vibe. I wish I
had have purchased that ticket for Ahmir. What if the DJ's bad? What if
Alicia doesn't show up? She has a party tonight too. Dear God is this guy
really this hard to please? I don't even know Toronto! What if what they
consider funk is really Bobby Brown! what if *slap*!
Okay, I'm calm. I'm wearing my new Moschino's. I'm cool.
We pass out several hoe passes for the after party and it all seems good.
So after pleading with the owner NOT to tell anyone who was showing up, just
invite 50 people, we show up to an alley crowded beyond belief.
The room was packed with the worst set of hootchies I've ever seen. This
wasn't the same club from the night before! This is the Tunnel crowd. And M
happens to show up on time. So here goes the security issue. Everyone out
of the way. Did I mention the DJ starts playing a house version of Lifetime?
I nearly jumped over the booth and choked him. Here comes the flaming
bartender with a NOW cd talking about "Play this, he'll love it"
"Play that and I'll throw this Vodka on your record collection", I scream.
Now I'm really bitching about needing Ahmir. I run up to the "VIP" section
and the band had picked up 12 too many hootchies so some area turned into no
area. I can't find the gotdamn waitress! Where's Alan? Where's the gotdamn
owner? Where's the ......
M: "Tina"
T: (gulp) hmmmm?
Did I mention the grab/hug/kiss on cheek and whisper in ear...
M: "Thanks for all & everything you do"
T: "No problem at all (now can I have your children?)"
M: "Can't hear you. What'dyou say?"
T: "Can I get you a drink?"
M: "Sure....seltzer water & lemon"
Then the evening went on. Alicia showed up, Vince Carter & some other
Raptors showed up, I played security and knocked hootchies out the box, and
was elated the rest of the evening. Good Time Girl strikes again. Can't wait
to get home this weekend.
