"Roots Fans Within The Industry?"

So far From the left (mos def, kweli, common, q-tip, etc.) to the right (Puff, Jay-Z, recently reported Kevin Liles, Lyor Cohen) and all in between, everyone seems to love the group. They've become the standard for true artistry.

2 part post:

1) Anyone else we'd be surprised to hear about show love?

2) (this may be a bit rhetorical) If the group gets this much love from so many in the business, why's MCA fronting so hard on them as well as Motive?

>1) Anyone else we'd be surprised
>to hear about show love?

sometimes -- when i hear of artists and labelheads that cater to a more mainstream/pop audience, i'm always a little surprised because most of them give off the impression that they have little to no knowledge of anyone outside the mainstream.

>2) (this may be a bit
>rhetorical) If the group gets
>this much love from so
>many in the business, why's
>MCA fronting so hard on
>them as well as Motive?

'cause MCA is a major label full of dunderheads.

a 3rd question, though:

how can so many people think the Roots are so great (or at least aware of their committment to the art)and continue to churn out mediocre material?

that's not their style. Nelly for example. He has said he's a fan of the roots (hasn't he?), but do you think he's suddenly going to be inspired by them, and his work is going to be a hell of a lot better than it is? Just cause someone may like the roots, it doesn't mean that they're work is going to change for the better. they are limited by their individual talent also. Like, i like looking at graffiti, and graphic design, but my own personal amateur talent limits me from doing what my idols do.

Cause not everyone is an envelope pusher. SOme folks like for the precedent to be set so they can follow suit, not to mention the fact that some people feel the route they are taking is a guaranteed check as opposed to the avant garde route where it takes time for the masses to understand and digest what you're doing. But many of the so called "leftist" groups (i.e. the Jay-Z's and the Puffy's were some of the first's in their field doing what they do no matter how ignant you may think it is.) So they should get some credit as well. Those cats were at the forefront of what I call "the bling factor" that has become quite prevalent (sp) in hip-hop.

damn how you not going to get any lover from the very label you run. uh, correct me if i am wrong, but isn't motive the the label that belongs to the roots and not the label the roots belong to. it doesn't probably matter since it seems that Motive is underneath MCA which doesn't appear to be letting Motive have its own budget or run semi-autonomously.

"Observe the ugly mess which most men make of their sex lives-and observe the mess of contradictions which they hold as their moral philosophy. One proceeds from the other. Love is our response to our highest values-and can be nothing else. Let a man corrupt his values and his view of existence, let him profess that love is not self-enjoyment, but self denial, that virtue consists, not of pride, but of pity or pain or weakness or sacrifice, that the noblest love is born, not of admiration, but of charity, not in response to values, but in response to flaws-and he will have cut himself in two. His body will not obey him, it will not respond, it will make him impotent toward the woman he professes to love and draw him to the lowest type of whore he can find. His body will always follow the ultimate logic of his deepest convictions; if he believes that flaws are values, he has damned existence as evil and only the evil will attact him. He has damned himself and he will feel that depravity is all he is worth enjoying. He has equated virtue with pain and he will feel that his body has vicious desires of its own which his mind cannot conquer, that sex is sin, that true love is a pure emotion of spirit. And then he will wonder why lover brings him nothing but boredom, and sex-nothing but shame." -taken from 'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand

The Roots are that type of band that make incredible music but dont really connect with the record buying public for a variety of reasons.

THey arent the first to be in this situation and they arent the last

But the fans they do connect with get inspired beyond belief because the music hits them so hard. They "get it", and then they drive 15 hours to go see the Lincoln Center show(i've heard two different people are doing it so far, prob. more)

The Bends - Platinum
Pablo Honey - Platinum
Okay Computer - Platinum
Kid A - Platinum
Amenisiac - Platinum

Radiohead(at least recently) is more a of critics band, than an artist's artist.

The critics create this tremendous buzz, so they can still push units without having a ton of airplay.

Yea. Know how many big artists were chilling backstage at the Lincoln center show? Tons. And record industry people in the crowd? fugettaboutit! The music industry (okay, maybe not MCA) loves The Roots. So does the media, artists, rappers(jay-z!). so why don't they sell really well? well, that's a mystery to me. I guess they don't connect well with the general public or something. (MCA...blah..blah...blah). whatever, though. they truly know how to rock a show beyond belif, and i hope this next album does it for them...

The Roots is model music that will be legendary, but may never gain "bling bling" profitability. I am sure though that they will reach multi platinum status sometime soon =).

The Roots is that kind of music they will play in the backround cause its soothing and real. One such case is when "You Got Me" was sampled for a bath product commercial in France. I'm sure there have been other occassions as well.

The Roots is music for the "intelligent and innovative".

You can look at The Roots as being professors. Students are turned into billionaires at Harvard with the help of the professors, but those professors themselves may never achieve such wealth. Hope ya'll get what I'm trying to say.

Adios,
Charles
