"Nas Hot97 Roots diss AUDIO"

Now you can judge for yourself ...

Nas talks more about the "State Property" movie than The Roots ... AND he didn't call The Roots 'sambos and porch monkeys', he said they played sambos and porchmonkeys in Bamboozled.

And he does have a point about "What They Do" vs playing with Jay-Z (even though Nas is the last one who should preach about 'jumping the bandwagon' and jiggyness).

However, saying that dreads don't make you a conscious person is kinda dumb right now, with Thought being dread-less for a few months already. LOL

Conclusion : after hearing the actual audio, I don't think that Nas' statements calls for a disstrack or battle. He should at least come with a track first IMHO.

He does call them fake rappers, though. And how do the roots contradict themselves by playing in a Spike Lee movie? Oh yeah, he also calls them confused rappers. I think that's enough of a diss. Roots must respond.

I agree for Nas to call them fake and confused is enough.I think Nas had a point as far as the video but The Roots have to let it be known that this cat ain't had no business calling them out.I think it's going to be worst if they don't strike back.you know how people are, they'll start saying that nas was right or that they're shook or soft.Strike Back!

I do think he deserves to be dissed, talking about how The Roots don't have an identity, and they contradicted themselves,Nas also said they are "Fake rappers". I didn't understand the whole response about the dreads, but he did diss the Roots and I think it's time Thought and the Roots showed the non-believers the lyrical skills they possess.

GOOD LOOKING OUT!!!!

hmmm.. after hearing the audio i woudl definitle say that this does not have to be settled by a battle. this can be settled by words and an explanation on the part of the roots.

they need it because like it or not nas holds ALOT of power right now. not that they need to explain themselves to nas, but to the hip-hop community that are not okayplayers.

we as okayplayers know that the roots are all about good music. we know that "what they do" was not about directly dissing the culture of big and jay and mob, but about those that sold their souls to protray something that they aren't. but the world doesn't knwo that. so a call in or appearance on hot 97 or power 99 would put an end to all of this.

that is all,
return to your homes citizens

i'm really glad to finally hear it. Nas actually sounds very eloquent, I think he misrepresents The Roots, but I don't dislike Nas anymore after hearing it, if anything I'm feelin what Nas is sayin with the exception of his more ignorant attack on The Roots (who we know are the GOATS).

I phrased that badly. I'm actually a big Nas fan, but to clarify I meant that the realaudio didn't make me think much worse of him, although I had hoped he knew a little more about what The Roots were about.

17. "He does have a point"
In response to Reply # 8

Nas has a point, although he is also a hypocrite.....on Stillmatic he says let's have world peace on "Rule" and then in "My Country" he talks about killing...he's got a song like "what Goes Around" which is a hard concious attack on drugs and the school system and religion, then he has tracks that are just plain out ignorant....and he talks about Jay-Z abusing women, Nas isn't exactly a woman's rights advocate...

when the Roots came out they did were kind of an anti-commercial group, whether they want to be or not, they play instruments, they are creative, and original which is a recipe for NOT being commercial...the death of B.I.G. and Tupac brought everyone together and now the Roots are much bigger than just being an underground hip-hop group, they are innovative Hip-Hop group that can bring hip-hop artists of all kinds together, they are the foundation...so Nas has a point, but i don't think the roots are hypocrites, i think the Roots have grown, and i don't think the Roots are on the Jay-Z bandwagon, i think Jay-z is on the Roots bandwagon....who the fuck else in going to do a hip-hop unplugged? for christ sake, they're the only fucking hip-hop band, shit, i think NAS should do an unplugged with the Roots too.

Young he makes a really good point. i would challenge a detractor to listenin to exactly where Nasir
is comin from. I feel him. He still a hypocrite too (he cant point the finger but so much) but his
arguement is valid. And as far as State Property....young people outside of NY/NJ/Philly prolly dont
give a fuck. I know I dont, and I think his arguement is direct. And I never even heard a diss they
makin a bunch of ish outta nothin. Peace

But do ya really need to ride my post to tell me THAT?

I see the 'BIG PICTURE'... and what Nasir Jones is talking about, FINE... so The Roots are Shuckin and Jivin sambos with instruments full of contradictions... but he's not without blame of contradiction either WAS MY ONLY POINT!

Truth be told, I know more Nas songs WORD for WORD than I do tracks from ANY Roots album. What does that mean? Still nothing at all. I LIKE Nas. I feel that blasting them on the radio was a weak move... but that's hip-hop. And it make s me no difference what happens.

Is that the perception you got of Nas? That he's trying to be rightious? Conflicted maybe, but definatly not rightious. When was it exactly that you came to this conclusion? Was it after Illmatic? Maybe it was from It Was Written, I mean on the one hand he did have Black Girl Lost, but he also had Take it in Bloon, Shoot Outs, Suspect Niggaz... Maybe it was I Am.. Ghetto Prisioners did it for you, but damn on that same album he had Undying love, Money is My Bitch, New York State of Mind pt. 2.. Oh OK Nastradamus... played both sides of the fence there too.. Ok how about Stillmatic... I see the same pattern. You heard the audio "Nas- I'm from the street's so I rhyme about them, but I don't always try to fill the kids ears with it. I try to give them something else to think about. (It wasn't those word's exactly, but I'm close enough)... So how exactly does the fact that he has God's Son across his belly make him contradictory? Is he not God's Son???? I really don't see how that is his way of saying he's rightious....

SPIKE "Do the Right thing," "Malcolm X," "He Got Game," 'put Public Enemy on all of so my soundtracks,' "School Daze," LEE.

55. ""The Alabama Porch Monkeys""
In response to Reply # 19

WAS the name of the band the Roots played in the flick. they were in blackface, and they were dancing like Sambos. I remember a particular shot where Thought is grinning like an idiot and hopping around.

However, the other side of that story is that the film is a satire of what is going on in the media right now, the roles some black actors are playing and some of the garbage networks have been putting on TV.

So on the one hand, the film is a critique of this, not an endorsement of it. On the other hand, there are characters in the film who embrace the ignorance of the show and aren't shown to have remorse or second-thoughts about it. "The Alabama Porch Monkeys" seem to fall into this category. Then again, they don't have any lines.

So I don't think Nas was necessarily wrong in the criticism, but he made it sound like they were actually playing themselves, and not characters.

he did call them some fake ass rappers. he blasted them for thousands of listeners to hear. in broad daylight. these are grounds for some type of response from the Roots.

THOUGHT wrote "What they do." He was not at the unplugged show, he labeled jay's shit as "mainstream. . .simplistic. . .formulamatic" in the Source (the cover with Q tip or Mos Def Pharoahe and Thought). And from what i have heard. . .he was not rocking with jay like he rocked with kool g, and all of the other guests at the Lincoln Center show.

The Roots are a single entity made up of different minds and people who probably have varying views on certain subjects. He can't shit on a whole crew like that.

why the fuck is he talking about 'Bamboozled.' They played the 'Alabama Porch Monkeys'. . .part of the racist, stereotypical, television show that De la Croix created. That movie was a satire and Mr. Nasir Jones needs to check out the DVD with Spike Lee explaining the whole concept of the movie if he doesn't UNDERSTAND WHAT THE WORDS 'SATIRE' and 'ACTING' means.

24. "Nas : Nas' Good Points vs. His Contradictions"
In response to Reply # 0

Good Point : The Roots did contradict themselves by making the What They Do video, and then working with Jay Z.

Contradiction: Nas straight up sold out with "I Am" and "Nastradamus". He went commercial, but he slanders it in the interview.

Good Point : He wants rappers to help stop the violence on the street, instead of making dangerous ghetto glorification.

Contradiction : If you keep on talking about guns and violent street incidents, even if it's from a third person point of view...it still will influence the listeners.

Good Point : Nas wants the scope of hip hop to change to better music quality.

Contradiction : There is none....he put out Stillmatic. Need i say more?

And by the way....the Roots must respond to this. Or else they'll look like the biggest sissies to step into the rap game.

After hearing the audio for myself and not complaining...I agree with him on a few things and disagree on others. Nothing he said was worth yesterday's calls for blood for the masses.

Her assertion that the roots "CAME OUT" with "What they do" is wrong/ignorant. I'll chalk that up to him being a QB head who wasn't checking for anything other than other NY heads back then. So he missed DYWM and the rest of IH. Evawhat!

Did the roots contradict themselves w the jayz thing? IMO yeah. Does it matter? Nope. It mattered to Nasir Jones because he & jay got beef. Fair enough.

The shot about them being in bamboozled...they were.

Them contradicting themselves & being fake rappers...yawn. His opinion.

If y'all want Thought & Nas to battle fine, but to egg this on because of this crap is sophmoric and juvenile.

Pun Intended.

Seeing that the Roots represent Philly and Nas, in NYC, put them on blast on Hot 97... AND the Roots had to hear about it 3rd person (unless they happened to be listenin' at the time) Why don't The Roots use a Philly radio station for a response(**all-star weekend) and do an exclusive on their home turf addressing their opinion on the Nas comments. Shit, he'll be in Philly to here it too! No need to go to their turf and listen to NYC callers supporting their man from QB... creating addition tension, rebel rousing, and instigation!

Plus, fuck that... why help boost Flex and Hot '97's ratings anyway??

There's no need for this to turn into a battle. Stop trying to turn this situation into your own entertainment. It was obvious that Nas wasn't going to be pleased with what The Roots did and I'm sure The Roots knew this beforehand. They came at him sideways.

Cats were catching feelings like crazy yesterday and most of them hadn't even heard it. Hopefully this gets resolved and they'll settle this without the bullshit.

Whoever mentionned "Belly" has a good point but what about Nas and his view of religion. When he first came out it was "When I was 12/I went to hell for snuffin Jesus" "Im waving automatic guns at nuns" When it's my time to go/I wait for God with the fo fo" Nowadays he keeps on talking about his "God's son" tatooe yet Jesus is God's son so in a way didn't go to hell for snuffin himself back when he was 12.

Speaking of contradictions. Can we say Oochie Wally? And he's talking about how Jay-Z degrades women? Please. Talking about how "we're past that era in hiphop where we talk about killing". The chorus on his new single is GOT MYSELF A GUN.

Personally, I think that he definitely singled them out. He also dissed them by calling them fake and confused. To me that's going enough to illicit a response from the Roots. Perhaps not a battle (yet), but for him of all people to come off like he's a role model is crazy.

His whole schpill was bull to me. All that coming from the dude who plays in Belly. I guess he was pious because his character wanted to go back to Africa (please). Plus these niggas kill me with this twisted righteouness BS. Do you teach your child about sex by watching pornos? No! Are any of his albums material where going to play for our kids? No! Dudes need to be real in the true sense of the word.

First off I wanted to say that this is all petty. Secondly I think The Roots are bigger than all that, ya know. Getting into something because someone called them names and shit, F* all that, for real! Guru said it the best: "It takes a more intelligent man to sqash a fight than to set one off knowledge I'll let some off!" So if The Roots do reply I bet the track will be mad raw, but on the other hand if they dont, I will know who holds it down the best.

Oh yeah, my other point with the whole "What they do" video thing. The Roots were just feeling the music, straight up! They were having fun doing what they love, on the real. Are you telling when someone makes a beat with a sample in it and then you have a live band play it the same EXACT way, c'mon now, that's talent to the fullest! And plus we dont even know how they were approached to do that whole Unplugged thing. So all you cats on Nas's dick just "Always I'm in some shit, my abdomen is the clip the barrel is my dick, uncircumcised
pull my skin back and cock me, I bust off when they unlock me
results of what happens to niggaz shock me.."

First of all I didn't think it was a big deal before I heard it. But after hearing how unprovoked that was without being asked about it and letting thousands hear it in the middle of the day... that deserves some kind of response I think. Sounding like he thinks he's better than everyone else when he contradicts himself more than anybody. His points aren't even accurate. So at that I think that at least a phone call wouldn't be a big deal for the Roots.

Second, for everyone who doesn't want this to turn into a big battle. Why not? I doubt the Roots or Nas is really going to hate eachother just because of a battle. Jay and Nas don't even hate eachother. Hiphop is all about battles and its good for the sport of hiphop. If Nas wants the crown or thinks he has it and is provoking other hiphop artists then let him try to defend it if he's so great.

Does anybody think we'd be hearing anything that great from Nas now if he wasn't beefing with Jay? I don't. Obviously its been producing some good music even on records that aren't disses. It made Nas step his game up all together to make sure he was on point. Now he can continue to do so and if the Roots do want to make a track they can showcase skills that we didn't even know they had, or haven't been displayed. As long as its a hiphop battle I think its good for both artists.

I think we are past this whole "beat street" "breakin" battles for real.... I mean words are powerful (negative or positive) Everything starts from some dialect.... Battle MC-in is like pimps fightin for the best chick shit to me.... Sincerely did we see words change a whole "landscape" e.g. Biggie ala Tupac (Yes I know it's not a situation like that (yet) When I heard about the "beef" btween Jay-Z and Nas I automatically thought of Big and Pac...how it started and how it ended....folk need to realize there's alot more shit to be concerned about.. but of course that's just MY opinion....

I think Jay said it best, "What you tryin' to kick knowledge, n---, you garbage"

Nah, I'm gonna need more than a little 2 min interview that Nas actually gives a damn. Talkin' all this and that about "our" community oh, and my favorite, "my projects...your projects? Negro you live in a house in Glen Cove, Long Island.

I'm about peace like everyone else, but Tariq needs to respond, and while he at it, why he trying to jock Pac now. Is he trying to win his fans?

Why Nas acting like he didn't fauly victim to the jiggy bug, or that he ain't try to live the Thug life. What was the Firm project about?

The dreads comment...when did Tariq ever say he was conscious or righteous. Tariq's not the one trying to spit 5% lessons in the same breath with negativity.

"Sneak an uzi on an island in my army jacket lining, hit the earth like a comet invasion, Nas is like the Afrocentric Asian, half-man, half amazin'". Now granted this line is nearly 10 years old, but it's from the Illmatic album which everyone seems to view as Nas at his best. Even back then I was seeing his contradictions.

And here's the other thing, people are judged by the people who surround them. Who are the people in Nas' camp. if he's this messiah or street prophet, how come he ain't uplifting. Look at his crew, they ain't talkin' about nothin.

Look at the Roots on the other hand, look at their crew, we all know the deal with that. Jay-Z nothwithstanding, alot of people clowned him for wearing the Che shirt, well the same folks should be clowning Nas for all of a sudden being Mr. Self Righteous.

Regarding this and other topics...if you did, you would see that:

A) ?uest had said that he realizes that the roots aren't blameless, he fully understands why Nas is sayin what hes sayin. he aint sittin back like dag...whys he sayin that shit but, that doesn't mean they have to lie down and take it...

B) He has also addressed those people who, ever since the Unplugged was done, are sayin that the roots are hypocrites, and selllouts and this and that cuz they worked with a "bling-bling" artist after the "What they Do" video...He said loosely, that the video isnt about hatin on the cats who are makin money and livin well, its about those who sell their soul and switch up their whole style and image to move units and blow up, and he doesn't feel that they (the roots) sold out or are hypocrites in any way cuz they collabo'ed with a mainstream artist. Their was a mutual respect between jay and the band so deal with it...

so read up before you go and beat these dead horses some more...

Yo, all you fanaticals are missing the point. Nas is at point of his life where he is seing the light. Common is doing the same thing and yall stand up for him. He knows what he has done and he is trying to do better. Fuck the speculation..talk over! I know that for a fact. Yall pointing out belly, that was years ago and so was the firm fiasco. He has more beef with what is depicted not at the person. He did not go on black thoughts skills or ?uest's musical talents. He just expressed what he saw being hypocrits from a group that he had respect for. He would be so hurt if didn't like the roots and admired there views. It is like a preacher having lunch with a drug dealer. Until the preacher comes to the pulpit to give his reasons alot of specualtion could be made when he pulls off in his caddy.

Everyone is guilty of contradiction in their life. Riq is going to write about what he wants and the rest of the crew are going to play what they want. I can't see the roots making a booty video but I have seen some of ?uest and Riq's lady friends and i wouldn't mind a few of them gracing my television screen. Cause one the best looking girls I ever seen and I can't even tell you want race she was, i saw with ?uest. Sis was FLY!!! Anyhow....

In conclusion, I think Nas didn't chew the roots a new one like everyone speculated and I don't think the roots should even worry about it. What I would like to see though is ?uest make a personal call or 2-way to Nas just so two intelligent black men can get some shit off they chest the right way.

Peace.

HELL

I just listened to the Nas Audio. My only response is: WEAK!!!

His stance is weak as hell. Just because The Roots made video dousing the bull that catts portray in videos with teh "What They Do" video and then back Jay Z on unplugged dont make them hyprocrites.

Damn they just backed the dude Jay Z up. To me they made the album the success that it is. As many of us have said: They made terrible Jay Z tracks sound tight...Thats Talent not hyprocrisy. They did what KRS 1 taunted on Criminal Minded: "..Take the wackest song and it Better".

Nas sounds pissed kinda like a BI***. DIssing the Roots is weak.

Although I agree with his statements about "State Property", I feel he's the wrong dude to Preach. His track record doesnt portray that practice. Then he tries to smooth over his preaching about the flick by saying he's from the street so he talks about the street.. C'mon man..thats Bull.

I remember madd cutts with him yelling stuff about "Thats Gangsta" and about how much of a Thug he is. Thats the same crap that Jay and Beans displayed on screen with "State Property". Before Preaching he should state that he's gonna stop advertising THUGERY from this point on instead acting like he's always been this Righteous catt. This makes him look worse than he's tryingto make The Roots look like.

Nas is NOT the Roghteous catt thats he's portraying to be...maybe NOW but not in the past. This is a new dude. NAS the chameleon. He has a serious identity problem. Its hard to know who the real dude is. At least its clear as to who The Roots are.

NAS: The Confused Poet

Like somebody said earlier. The whole Nasty Nas persona was the badd butt dude who was a unreligious catt. NOw he's saying: "We aint State Property / We Gods Property" He's right but why the sudden change?

On Mobb Deeps album he said: "Shoot at the clouds..its seems like the holy beast is watching us." Again he's way more contradictory than The Roots.

Hey Yo NAS...get tha hell off the Soap Box and stop Preaching. Feel free to hop back on after you start practicing what you preach.

Hmmm.

Now that i have heard Nas' ACTUAL WORDS, I may have to adjust my position a little bit...I was told homeboy called them "sambos", not the context in which he called them that (criticizing their "bamboozled" role). i disagree with the criticism of the bamboozled role, but he made some very powerful statements in this interview, mainly about 'state property' and saying 'we're past that era'...when i heard the plot for SP (State Property), the first thing I thought was "that story's already been told, damn...".

his comments about state property vs. god's property, the police sweep thru QB, and so on...interesting...let's just hope Nas can find some way to translate his words to political action, even its only some kind of benefit concert or benefit album...

(he already did the marvin gaye remake song that Bono organized, which I believe benefitted the movement to address the AIDS crisis across African continent)

well...here's what I think should happen...I think cats should try to get in touch with Nas and let him know the collab with Jay was just what it was: MUSIC...if anything, it sounded like Nas was angry/disappointed about the collab ("let me talk about the state of our hip-hop community..."), so this sounds like something that can be patched up without an all-out war. It ain't like he came out calling them gay slurs like he did with Roc-a-Fella...he just seems upset that they did the collab and questions their righteousness...not much of a stab, just a criticism...this ain't really battle worthy at this point...

maybe you guys can work out something where you do a benefit concert for QB? maybe be the backing band for an okayplayeresque jam session featuring QB's most wanted with proceeds to go to improving QB (maybe to an adult learning center near there or something)?

to get back to Nas' comments on The Roots' role in "Bamboozled", I *totally* disagree with him...The Roots were playing a role satirizing performers who will do anything for a buck...the whole audition scene was priceless...there's no way homeboy can justify them for doing that role, on one hand, then say he supports seeing more creative black film (rather than more State Property-like flicks). "bamboozled" was a really creative film with a strong message (some may dislike the execution, but it definitely was a departure from the typical "black film" that gets made in this day and age). i think he was just angry when he made that point.

Nas wasnt criticizing them for doing the role itself, he was in a sense giving them props for doing the role is the grand scheme of the movie-- but hes saying that they turned around after the MOVIE and played the somewhat played the part in real life.... okayplayers really blew this outta poportion, people talk about these types of subjects all the time but never have the courage to call people out by their names. i think his calling the roots out is a good thing because it allows for dialouge of substance on a particular subject/group, not generalization ('rappers')of people and what they talk about.. its kinda like delores tucker saying 'rappers' need to stop calling women bitches, what 'rapper'? when? whats the text? and then deal with it....

okayplayers need to quit jocking the roots cause they the 'roots'and in essence giving them a pass for anything they say or do they maybe wrong... and i'm not saying they are wrong, but its like the people who think everything Jay-Z does is just the best, every song, every lyric, etc. when that cant always be the case

"All respect to Luda, but how could she (Oprah) put him on the show if he's singing 'Move bitch get out the way,' 'I got hoes in different area codes?' I don't understand that. - Nas

Loving Philly, hating the NYC teams, and consequently developping an eternal inferiority complex, it's the bshell.

My final Eagles football prediction of the season, quoted from the Eagles NFC East Champion Post:

"Mark this down, because I'm about to educate your ass. The Bucs are going to spank us this week in Tampa--the Bucs LOVE to use meaningless games to puff out their chest. Everyone will jump off the bandwagon for the playoff game, but we'll return the favor and serve them by at least 10 in our house. Then we're going into Chicago and taking it from the Bears--we'll get up early, do a decent job containing the A-Train (under 100) and pick off Miller 3 times. Then we'll go to St. Louis and lose by at least 10, but there's no disgrace in that. We'll have shown that we're the second best team in the conference and be set up for next year. You don't have to believe it yet, but you have to give it up when it does happen."

I liked Thought's, "I'm a grown man," retaliation.
I got a *guffaw* out of it.

However, I do think Thought should have more confidently
represented the fam's decision to go onstage with Jay-Z.

He shifted the blame for the outcome of the "What They
Do" video from the Roots to the director. Which may
all be true, but what's done is done, and you can't
blame anyone for making you sit on a bed with a Faith-esque
big titty model behind you holding champagne glasses.

It ain't like he didn't KNOW what video that was from.
Nobody is that oblivious. I don't care what the lighting
was like.

All he had to explain was WHY the Roots chose to make
the video, and that would have sufficed.

Also, he made it abundantly clear that he was not there
for the Jay-Z Unplugged performance, so the issues Nas
has shouldn't really be with him.

Personally, I think ?uestlove would have been the best
person to speak to Flex in this situation.

After hearing all of the audio, I don't think a dis
record is really in order, unless Nas references the Roots
in his rhymes.

My
knowing is the battle.

Nublax....you're on point! First of all, you all must understand that The Roots have not contradicted themselves. The whole point of "What They Do" was to say "be original", and not to indulge in the concept or stlye of materialism, flossin', and the "big Willie" lifestyle. The Roots have stayed true to the concept since the beginning. Just because they did "unplugged" with Jay-Z does not indicate a contradiction! They are simply making music! Selling out would be if they started sippin' Krys on stage, or rockin' iced-out Rollies, talking about whips, money, hoes, or bling-blinging. Because the Roots don't chose to have a materialistic style like Jay-Z does not mean that they can't make music together!! Some of y'all need to get your mind right!!!

Secondly, those of us who actually saw the movie "Bamboozled" realize that there was/is a deeper message than what was on the surface. Before y'all sit here and try to judge, watch the movie first....you just might learn something.

I like Nas, but he is confused! How can he even fix he lips to say the word "contradiction" when just a few albums ago he was rockin' a pink suit with Puffy, and riding in Bentley's????-WTF Now THAT's a contradiction!!!!!!

Personally, I hope that Thought gives him verbal beat-down!!!!

I had to come back to say this one last thing. Nas is talkin all that garbage about "State Property", yet he read for a part in the movie. That's REAL weak on Nas part. That's like the biggest contradiction of all. He needs to quit. That nigga is REAL confused.
