"BLACK THOUGHT vs. NAS"

Line up an vote people... I wanna see how big of an underdog Thought really is. If even the okayplayers take Nas over Thought, this could be a MONUMENTAL DEFEAT FOR NAS.

Cause I know thought WILL get in his ass... Why?!!!??!

1) Thought is a Battle MC at heart... Nas is a Narrator, and in the case of battling... he's a big crybaby whining about shit and throwing empty darts at the opposition.

2) What the hell is Nas gonna say to Black THought?!!!??! Did Black Thought even deal with Jay-Z?!!!??! Was thought on those Volkswagen comercials (not that it would be all that bad). I dont see where Thought has been hypocritical at all. We know all the angles Thought has on Nas, I dont even have to go into it.

3) Nas aint sharp as he used to be. For all the good shit on 'Stillmatic' it still wasnt as clean as 'Illmatic' or even 'It Was Written'. On 'I Am' his flow was borderline garbage except for the obvious stand out tracks. Whether you like Thought or not... you gotta admit one thing, the man is consistant. Now there's somethin to set him off. Inspiration is a mutha...

Do you want more?!!!??! I could go on, shit!

Squeamish kids, yall get the eff outta this post (c) Jay-Z

I think that's the advantage Thought has over Nas.I don't think he delt with Jay.I love both, both are inmy top 5 mc's of all time and like somebody said, this could really set Thought off.I wasn't feeling the last couple of tracks he was on but inspiration is a mutha.Unlike Nas vs Jay-z.I doubt that there's a history between The Roots and Nas so What would they talk about. This would be a straight up raw battle.I can't wait!

Nas...

1. If Thought is such a great battle mc, please give me examples on why he's a better one than Nas.

2. This is the only area in which Thought has an advantage.

3. Thought is consistent, but so what? M.O.P. is also consistent, but are they better than Tribe, De La Soul, or Wu-Tang? Hell no.

*shrugs*

Exhibit A: Distortion 2 Static (Freestyle Mix)

Kid I'm every MC, it's all in me
For all eternity I represent in southern Philly
Indeed as I thought I proceed and make MC's bleed
Fake MC's need to take heed
The essence of my presence is a seed
Kid I got styles you wouldn't believe
?Impress my rap league?
The Roots poetic and you're pathetic
I'm laughing at MC's paragraph, illiterates can't read
Or can't seem to conceive, or construct a product
That don't suck, but record companies do not give a FUCK
That's why forever after you will hear the laughter
As I flip the rap chapter you'll be on your back after
It's the master microphone magician
Do work that make the people listen
Thoughts in mind glisten as your rhyme's missing
Hold tight, let's do this right
Cause I can see we got a lot of MC's that need insight tonight

There is no way, no chance, no how, no nothing that indicates that Nas has a chance. What, will he call BT gay?

For the love of GOD, BT stay out of it, please don't destroy one of my fave emcees.

Think about, BT will wipe Nas off the face of the hip hop world. Nas will never show again afterwards if this battle were to take place.

I say ?uest battle Nas w/ a drum solo and leave it at that.

Peace my brothers, just remember, peace.

the roots sold 700,000 plus with their last record. If you think "half" of the people who bought nas' last *double platinum* album (um, that's barely over twice what TFA sold) don't know who The Roots are, you're kidding yourself.

>haha, it wouldnt do shit to
>his career, he might loose
>YOUR respect, but he'll be
>cryin all the way to
>the bank...

Yeah, but that's not because The Roots are "unknown", that's because as long as Nas keeps making decent records, he'll be straight. It's a lot harder to "destroy a career" now than it was in, say, the mid-80's when KRS ended it all for a then-popular MC Shan.

side note: If Mobb Deep's next record isn't a monster, they may be "outta here" (c) KRS (you can't follow being dissed with a weak album...lol)

Ya'll have got to be kidding me. Bt defeat Nas. Personally, that is not something I want to see. I do think their style is somewhat similar. The way the recite their words. I did not say how they flip them. I love them both as emcees. I think it would be a better battle than jay-z vs Nas. Thought would get into him but I think Nas will win in the end. I don't care about fan approval. I am speaking candidly about lyrics, flow, word play and beats. The beat can make or break a great dis song. Nas has never been wack lyrically. His beats are the problem. This leads me to one more thing. Everyone is bashing Nas. You forgot that music changed. Nas was on the top and then the south took over. Jay-Z, being very smart, was able to incorporate a northern and southern sound making it something completely different. New Yorkers and the rest of the east coast was bouncing. I must admit it. I bounced a little too. I can do that and get away with it. HA HA Ha! I am from the south. Nas was stuck with his old sound. Oh, sorry about that, back to the real discussion. Did nas say something about the roots? I want to know.

In due time an new light will shine!

You see, there is a major part of me that wants to say Thought... when it comes to freestyles, just a real fluid spit, and bending words to make it fit... no one makes it hotter than Thought...

However, when it comes to concepts, well written verses to the point of poetry, yet still gritty enough to make a prisoner's head bounce in approval... Nas. Damn I don't know!??!?!?!

cant believe cats would put black thought on the same pedastal as nas... what the fukk are yall smokin... black thought is a nice MC IN A GROUP who DOES NOT ROCK SONGS BY HIMSELF ALL THE TIME.... u know why there aint been no thought solo??? its cause the label knows he cant hold it down for dolo and if you actually think so ur buggin... fukk is wrong with you cats??? name one song thought has done where he has come as nice as nas has on memory lane, your the man, shootout, take it in blood etc... when black thought can hold down an entire album 4 times and have an 3 potential classic albums under his belt, then we can talk... when black thoughts best song can match nas' then we can talk... far as im concerned son hasnt even shown he can be as good as mos def and kweli yet....

and nas was right for dissin them cats... they aint above criticism even though they wanna be the "holier than thou" rappers... they did what every other rapper would do, they saw a nice paycheck, a good way to capture some of jay z' fanbase, and a way to promote themselves.... and no one would knock them if they didnt perpetuate this aura of "hip hop purity" they wanna claim for themselves... that what u do video was a direct slap at jay z' whole stee, but they go and do a video and album with him???

as for material nas could use to diss thought, how about this

1) still no solo, no one checking for it either(no one has mentioned this on any board ive been on in over half a year)
2) no movie, and the movie he involved in has him banging a white chick
3) how he broke(true or not, thought aint paid like nas is)

Before you post... get nas's NUTS out ya mouth...

lines??!?!? here you go...

Now was she real?
Or an illusion of this optical confusion with...
the accent.. of ancient Egypt?
Or could it be that she's the one I was supposed to be with
and together walked this twisted...
staircase to somethin realistic.
Damn, her lips...
having me addicted to her presence.
Front page material on Essence, a queen...
imperial before her adolescence.
And as she grew into a woman, she became refined.
I never knew another like her in my lifetime.
So now I travel through a tunnel of space,
without a place, on the face of this earth...
with this pain gettin worse, drivin me insane,
or at least I'm touchin the brink...
of sanity to think of how I can link, or contact her.

Lets break it down... And give me a break... nothin on Illmatic is as good as that... maybe the standout tracks from his later albums. Could we be a lil objective here...

Did you say "Prolific"
Why?!??! I'm not sayin Nas hasnt put out incredible material and that he isnt a grade A MC but if you wanna talk prolific... KRS, Tupac, Chuck D, Rakim, and even Guru are the PROLIFIC MCS.... Nas's "teachings" sounded forced on every album but Illmatic. Nas is a good narrator... he's good at taking a subject and detailing it, but what stance has Nas ever takin that wasnt obvious. Prolific??!??! Nas aint about change... Nas is about sounding like his about change.

Add Ice Cube, Jeru, Queen Latifah, and even Will Smith ALL BEFORE NAS... they all went against the grain.

Nas is still on Rakim's heels but he aint really makin a statement. He's making songs to make songs.

How dare you call Black Thought a hypocrite when you look at the MIX of messages on a Nas album. Give me a fuckin break... Nas is too PLASTIC to be prolific, you can see right thru him. And he doesnt put enough emotion into his so called "prolific" tracks to even pull them off.

Black Thought is a monotone MC too by the way. So this could be an interesting matchup. Its like the battle of the Rakims...

nas is in a paper chase just like every other MC who make's records. He makes songs to sell records just like Rakim, Will Smith, Latifah, Cube, Shawn Carter, Marshall Mathers, etc. Lyrical prowes helps you hold your head up among heads on the block. But when you buy that Bentley, the house, the clothes, the bitches, and all the other izms...they're all puffy, it's a dollar's and cents thing. Dopeness don't matter...

Guru????????? chill. he rhymes like an eighth grader. He's doing his thing, and Gang Starr is legendary, but 85% is because of Primo. Can I be one to say that Thought and Nas are equally dope?!?!?!?!? They can BOTH do it ALL. People want to diss Nas for being in movies, but everyone here probably has the flick Tariq did on DVD. There isn't any "Great" MC in hip-hop that hasn't done some really hypocritical shit! KRS,Tupac,Jay-Z,Nas,Black Thought,Pharoahe etc. Biggie might be the only one(ba-by). Nas and theRoots have made serious impacts on hip-hop history, so why all the fuss. I will admit that I don't even know what Nas said about the Roots. Maybe that would change the way I see things, but still...there's no such thing as bad publicity( except kiddie porn scandals maybe). As long as no one dies, cats can beef if they want to. Eventually, these 2 will show that they are 2 of the most mature MC's in hip-hop, I think. Anyone feel me??

artist royalties being what they are, and considering how much the Roots tour. I doubt that their bank accounts are as different as some would have you think

>out to make money.... thats
>like making 200 g's a
>year but working 100 hour
>workweeks, meanwhile the guy down
>the block makes 150 a
>year and works a 9-5....
>who's richer???....

just to take that literally, the guy with 200,000 is still richer than the guy with 150,000...one just has a higher hourly wage...LOL...work that math, dunny.

dig it, depending how much of his publishing Nas is catching, he's getting nice checks off radio play alone...but Thought is touring a helluva lot more and probably spending a helluva lot less (because Nas is trying to look like he has as much money as Jay Z and probably only seeing 1/10th of what Jay sees, off publishing alone, Jay being the King of Radio Play...LOL...Nas' QB necklace alone probably costs whatever he made off his second album...ha).

this is silly though. the point was whether Thought was "broke". You would have to be something of an idiot to think Thought is "broke" considering how much The Roots tour. Broke, as in he sleeps on his mom's couch and borrows money to catch the bus? Dream on....

Rappers I monkey flip em with the funky rhythm I be kickin
Musician, inflictin composition
of pain I'm like Scarface sniffin cocaine
Holdin a M-16, see with the pen I'm extreme, now
Bulletholes left in my peepholes
I'm suited up in street clothes
Hand me a nine and I'll defeat foes
Y'all know my steelo with or without the airplay
I keep some E&J, sittin bent up in the stairway
Or either on the corner bettin Grants with the celo champs
Laughin at baseheads, tryin to sell some broken amps
G-Packs get off quick, forever niggaz talk shit
Remeniscing about the last time the Task Force flipped
Niggaz be runnin through the block shootin
Time to start the revolution, catch a body head for Houston
Once they caught us off guard, the Mac-10 was in the grass and
I ran like a cheetah with thoughts of an assassin
Pick the Mac up, told brothers, "Back up," the Mac spit
Lead was hittin niggaz one ran, I made him backflip
Heard a few chicks scream my arm shook, couldn't look
Gave another squeeze heard it click yo, my shit is stuck
Try to cock it, it wouldn't shoot now I'm in danger
Finally pulled it back and saw three bullets caught up in the chamber
So now I'm jetting to the building lobby
and it was filled with children probably couldn't see as high as I be
(So whatchu sayin?) It's like the game ain't the same
Got younger niggaz pullin the triggers bringing fame to they name
and claim some corners, crews without guns are goners
In broad daylight, stickup kids, they run up on us
Fo'-fives and gauges, Macs in fact
Same niggaz'll catch a back to back, snatchin yo' cracks in black
There was a snitch on the block gettin niggaz knocked
So hold your stash until the coke price drop
I know this crackhead, who said she gotta smoke nice rock
And if it's good she'll bring ya customers in measuring pots, but yo
You gotta slide on a vacation
Inside information keeps large niggaz erasin and they wives basin
It drops deep as it does in my breath
I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death
Beyond the walls of intelligence, life is defined
I think of crime when I'm in a New York state of mind

cmon, even ?uest said himself Nas is God in rap music...

peace

Thats not the best verse to post anyway... i see you posted it twice on this board. This a verse that sounds brilliant but reads like a bunch of gibberish. The exquisite detail is there but nas is jumping thru different boats of thought all under one theme. No statement is made. Again... this song is more of a production/flow masterpeice... throw in hot vocabulary and descriptive allusions, then rap it up nicely at the end... and you have a song people will hold in high regard. But this song is NOT better than 'The Notic'. Give me a break.

>1) still no solo, no one
>checking for it either(no one
>has mentioned this on any
>board ive been on in
>over half a year)

got shelved for smapling reasons, been there done that, we (hip-hop heads) have moved on, and are looking for Phrenology. besides, the roots are like staples for hip-hop heads. you knw its gonna be good when it comes out, and you knwo your gonna cop it. with nas...its a crap shot. he got lucky thi time, but next time.....

>2) no movie, and the movie
>he involved in has him
>banging a white chick

WOW....nas was in amovie where AFTER he "did the knowledge"...smoked a blunt with a nine year old, and told his girl they were goin to Africa....WTF THERE ARE OVER 42 FUCKING COUNTRIES IN AFRICA...FUCKING PICK ONE YOU PSEUDO INTELLECTUAL, IGNORANT-CHIP-TOOTHED FUCKA sorry that was always a soft spot for me.

>3) how he broke(true or not,
>thought aint paid like nas
>is)

who said nas was paid? in his videos nas is paid, but see how much is in his account. after e recoups from the cost of his album, and the fact that he dont tour like that...whatever

on another note. beyond the streets, critics wuld have a feidl day with this one. the roots stay a critical favorite, while nas has just gotten back on (some) of their good sides. they could easily paint the roots as the underdog goodguys, as was done for nas during the jay beef. dont underestimate the power of the media. they made people actually beleive that a song full of homophobic refrences an school yard cat calling was a good diss track....

that is all,
return to your homes citizens

2) no movie, and the movie he involved in has him banging a white chick

i don't think i even need to explain why that statement is stupid.

3) how he broke(true or not, thought aint paid like nas is)

First of all, The Jay shit was never for the money I don't know who told you that shit! If you really want to know here it is first hand, We did the shit because we are versatile and can rock with anyone underground to mainstream in any genre of music!
And as far as fanbase we have our own CORE audience which some of our fans happen to like Jay and vice versa. Please believe dawg we are not near broke and who gives a fuck if nas got more doe I'm sure we got more doe than you and I mean individually too! Homie you sound like a fool, you think nas has 3 possible classics?? I'd say 1 maybe you got him confused with the grammy award winning Roots crew who has 3, besides how many records have you ever recorded, whats your name Hiphop, ohh you're the 76ers mascot now I understand. Do you even own a home or business or car or do you take public transportation to your little work for the white man ass job! Basically, like nas you a clown just lookin for some shit to talk about to help sell your slow moving record,, ohh you don't have a record well shut the fuck up or,
line it up with the rest of yall shit talkers and yall all can get knocked the fuck out 1by1!

Sorry as much as I love the Roots, but just cause NAS has an iller delivery, more venomous, and better voice.. he captures the song more..

BT can be well kinda boring.. (No knock on his skills though)

I don't think the Roots should go out and straight up make a diss track. If Nas forces the issue then yeah blaze him..(it's something u will have to do)

I can't believe you guys are disputing a battle or the lyrical content between these two MCs. Black Thought is one of the (probably THE) most under rated MCs. Black Thought would EASILY hold his own down. Here's a BRIEF reason why Black Thought has is a better lyricist and battle MC:

I'm on some old snap a rapper neck shit
You know what I'm sayin?
So niggaz best get out of my path
Kid, I'm on point like a gat
The basket case, I waste MCs with rapture taste
Facing these leads to cats diminished
They be pullin the mic out that ass when I get finished
Administrative assistant I'm not, yo, I'm the principal
Nigga, takin shots, like I'm invincible
Figure me to be hardcore, my input cuts your jaw
For real, for short, do you want more?!!!???
-"Do you want more???!!"

Southeast to Pennsylvania, Transporation Authority
is what I'm probably on, if I ain't whippin a Land
throughout ya sec-tion, my mind's in traum'
Nine times out of time I rhymes upon the L Train
Within my brain, foun-tains over rugged moun-tains
of my terrain, diggit I came too far to front
So I'm meditatin on how to maintain
Stepped off at City Hall into the rain;
-"push up your lighter"

Black rain fallin from the sky look strange
The ghetto is red hot, we steppin on flames
Yo, it's inflation on the price for fame
and it was all the same, but then the antidote came
The Black Thought, ill syllablist, out the Fifth
This heavyweight rap shit I'm about to lift
LIKE, a phyllum lift up it's seed to sunlight
I plug in the mic, draw like a gunfight
I never use a cordless, or stand applaudless
Sippin cholorophyll out of ill silver goblets
I'm like a faucet, monopoly's the object
There ain't no way to cut this tap, you got ta get wet
Your head is throbbin and I ain't said shit yet
-"the next movement"

I woke up and it was pouring down rain
I put my head on, it really wasn't no thing
One of them days I was feeling immune to the pain
Threw on, Alice Coltrane, smoked and sang
And wrote this flame compused to the rhythm of the droplets
And went whispering simliar to gossip
The kick slapping at the window glass
Slow down the globe so it don't spin too fast
Because, I been running like a river since
The age of my early innocence
It just made me ambitious
My grams used to tell me "Man listen,
If you can't burn, don't step into the kitchen"
You muscle your turn, the laws of the land viscious
We gotta stick to the plan, which is
Pursuing true riches, whether we trade stock or wash dishes
Throughout setbacks and few glitches
The Big Picture's the focus, fuckin being hopeless
Or helpless, we not selfish so we wrote this
Give it to ya, make you feel good
-"Glitches"

Yo you should see some of these cats that vocalize
They get props from they local guys and try to raise
Speaching through the mic like "Yo I apologize"
They blind and wasn't as wise and fail to realize the com-
Plectual sexual side of the rhyme
When I make love to the mic the crowd respond
"the good, the bad, and the desolate"

Step into the spot the venue is empty
5 minutes later the crowd is in a frenzy
Packed up to the maximum occupancy
Give me the mic I got a Jones like Quincy
Break down the barriers don't try to fence me
Let the ladies in the front get pressed against me
Peepin, brothers on stage ten deep-an'
24 out the 18 straight leapin
Duck season, Thought bust the heat seakin
Mission make y'all feel this and keep leakin
Bang this in the hoods
Like stolen goods, keep reachin
New soundwave street sweepin
"Ya'll know who"

and I can go on and on and on...and this is just lyrical content persay. Delivery plays a KEY role in MCing and I have been to A LOT OF SHOWS (which include both artists) and I know NO ONE can dispute that Black Thought can rock the crowd like no other. And the comment about Nas's fans not even caring about Black Thought implements that he is not as well known as NAS, which NEEDS SOME CORRECTION because BLACK THOUGHT (and subsequently THE ROOTS) are BETTER KNOWN than Nas. The validity? a Grammy, more album sales WORLDWIDE, and one of the MOST BUSIEST HIPHOP WEBSITES...Nas is nice, he is amongst my favourite MCs no doubt and he established this by dropping illmatic, not any other album that preceeded it. Black thought is amongst one of my favourite MCs b/c he did not only drop "Do you want more??" but "Illadelph Halflife," "things fall apart" and a school of bsides and singles that has definatly got him the deserved attention from people like me. I know that all these accomplishments are generally viewed as "The Roots" accomplishments, but because Black Thought is the front man and we are talking about LYRICS...then you guys have to give him his props...have to

this was a lengthy black thought vote from djcomplex

You're going to sit here and displace a man's skill based on whether the PUBLIC embraced him or not?!??! Get to the bottom line... he'll take Nas the fuck out.

And to answer your question... "What They Do" was very significant... it was voted by many in the industry to be the best video/statement that year and of that era.

plenty of industry motherfuckers heard that song and heard dude get tore up.

it didn't hurt his career, but it did have SOME effect the same way any time somebody puts a hole in your ass on the mic has some effect...that would be like Planet Asia tearing a hole in Method Man and he doesn't respond, but that shit gets on hella mix tapes...it hurts your rep....it didn't kill Cube in the game or even hurt him real bad, but it did effect his rep...

to say it had "zero effect" is ridiculous, man...motherfuckers heard that shit in the industry and took note that this chi-town cat put a hole in homeboy...

but cube is the most dissed rapper in history anyway. cypress hill, common, kam, NWA, snoop (same song where he dissed luke)...hella people have dissed cube on wax...

you're severely underestimating Nas's skills as well.

At least acknowledge that it would be a legitimate battle.

No way it would be one-sided in BT's favor.

but I can't help but remember your Nas-bashing in the past. Everybody has bias, but yours is transparent.

Quez, too.

I think BT is a good MC and probably built for a battle like this since all he talks about is how good an MC he is. So in that respect, he is well-suited to engage in this conflict. As we all know, Nas is more of a storyteller.

Still, if we're going to talk about the merits of both MC's, there's no need to tear down Nas to build BT up. Or vice-versa.

I'm not even a Nas fan. In the Nas/Jay battle, I still maintain that Takeover was the winner.

I just keep reading about how Nas is wack or how Nas's repertoire of songs can't stand up to the Roots. That's false.

People are using this as an opportunity to bash Nas.

You aint hear Nas stumble all over Stillmatic. The man just aint as sharp as he used to be. And i guess he doesnt hold him self to the same standards. He fucked up two or 3 bars on 'One Mic' alone... which could have easily been one of my fav tracks of all time. Its like knowin a cat is one of the best track-n-field athletes in the world but he's prone to trip every once in a while.

i just dont know about this one, i guess i gotta cop stillmatic, but i just havent been THAT impressed with nas since "I AM" dropped. as far as that lil trilogy u got goin there. i dont even listen to iron flag or blueprint. and i just wanted to know what was the reaction on here to the wu lp when it dropped? as for me its the worst of the 4 releases. i just wasnt feelin it. anyway this could prove to be another comm vs. cube type of battle where the big dogg calls out a little known but well-respected underdog and gets pissed on. i cant wait to see how this one pans out.

It aint about "Stillmatic is garbage" or nothin like that. And I'm not tryin to bash Nas on this post but cats is shittin all over Thought. My point was that Nas is not as sharp as he used to be and that could hurt him against an technically brilliant MC like Thought.

In response to Reply # 0

this is a tough one i mean to me thought is only the underdog because he never sold as much as nas did, he nerver got the light nas did.... nas is not my favorite or top five favorite emcees but i won't say thought would destroy him even though he is in my top five... Nas doesn't come off like he used to
thought is consistant and i like his style and wordplay and how he fits words together.... Both rappers make you think
this battle would definitly be better than jay and nas though and i do think if a face to face battle or cypher thought will take him

what will nas do diss the roots, thoughts career, he cant

the roots have all good consistant albums and shows
nas has like 2 good albums and rarely does a show

thought can say way more cuz he im sure has analyzed nas career just like we all have and since nas battled jay thought can get more into the topics jay already brought up and some of his own personal views and go into more detail....

don't say thought will ripem a new ass or nas will destroy him whole that makes it seem like its a easy battle, but i do believe Thought will win and can take it to him more than jay could
nas is a coward to come on the radio that way and also dissen musicians who made music for jay at unplugged they didn't say shit to or about him

peace

Hot 97 is gonna blow up nas for the win...WHY...because if Thought comes as complex as he usually is, the kids won't understand, listening to they radios, doin' they faces like this...(c) Ghost on the Sun...

Then you'll hear a bunch of kids call in talkin about how Nas gonna rip the Roots(hahahaha) and talking all TYPES of bullshit about the Roots....

Which is why I think Riq' and Quest should dedicate a track to him...Keep it on wax...IT WILL HELP SALES...

BLOW THIS SHIT UP!!!

But I'm sure we know who WILL win.

In ANY even they should do it live if the people don't believe who is the better opponent.

u actually think BT has anything on nas? cat is nice, but not on Nas' level. I understand he's in the "concious rapper" realmm but his lyrics neva came close to Nas' best shit. BT's best is Nas' average...

"Rappers I monkey flip em with the funky rhythm I be kickin
I think of crime when I'm in a New York state of mind"

HELLO? r yall serious. Jus cuz u a bunch of STAN's dont mean BT could touch Nas, 4 real...no one could touch Nas on Illmatic, and few people could touch him on any other of his records. You're talkin bout the man who wrote 'I GAVE U POWER'...

Even ?uest said that when it comes to rap NAS IS GOD...

does he still deliver like that i mean u brought illmatic man, bring a stillmatic verse as dope as that..... that was a hungrier nas, now he has a bigger head....
peep this

The matador, shorty conniseur
Stompin whatever you build to the floor
Similar to that of a dinosaur
I told you I'm the rap predator
You insist to imitate, what for?
Superstar niggaz is ten percent real, ninety percent invented
for a fuckin record deal
Comin with somethin veterans can't feel
I hit you like a steel anvil
Because you grafted off the next man's skill
But still I remain mellow, seein the theatrics of Othello
Run over tactics of the
C-L-O/N-E-S fess
The phoniest cats is felonious (word)

and

That nigga Thought flows like a river I deliver
styles like Domino's, eyes closed I inhale
equality follow me now son
Listen my divisions advance I surpass one half the rap mass
the other half, want my autograph, because I got
soul plus a ghetto stroll similar to Shaft

and

Y'all know the name, I got game like an Evangelist
Relax to my man D'Angel-ist, who could ever cancel this
Music growth, it's cancerous not glamorous
Yo the lifestyle I embrace to some scandalous
I chop joke MC's like choke sandwiches
And backslap the snare drum open-handed wit my vo-cal
So I'm far from lo-cal
My peoples got to keep me in they fo-cal
Perform Al Jerome style, then act like you know now
Surf the internet, inspect my profile
Return to menu if you miss this
Your girlfriend said my music is futuristic
Then kissed me on my neck, left marks of lipstick
Then came to the spot and we got lifted
I rip shit on the solo unassisted
Or wit Malik and the Fifth Click, so y'all should keep your lips zipped
Y'all don't know what it's about, get on route
I hold it down wit no doubt and sip Stout
And got the hot record out
Y'all need to let your necks snap back, check it out, word up

In my formitive by my peers I was influenced
until the instruments of time killed the congruence
I peeped the blue prints on how to make true sense
of MC's which are a nuisance I know just what to do sinceI'm on another lev.
brothers is fakin' jacks and think they ready for the rev.
but they got a lot to learn, to make theri thoughts long term
'cause on theri short-cuts they made a wrong turn
probably, timelessly I construct the firesome
to rip your eardrum for many years to come
professional style thinkin' rational to move wise
so hard it's a wonder y'all alive...

as REWIND

Listen up gangstas and honeys with ya hair done
Pull up a chair hon' and put it in the air son
Dog, whatever they call you, god, just listen
I spit a story backwards, it starts at the ending

The bullet goes back in the gun
The bullet hole's closin this chest of a nigga
Now he back to square one
Screamin, "Shoot don't please"
I put my fifth back on my hip
It's like a VCR rewindin a hit
He put his hands back on his bitch
My caravan doors open up
I jumped back in the van and closed it shut
Goin reverse, slowly prepared
My nigga Jungle utters out somethin crazy like, "Go he there"
Sittin in back of this chair, we hittin the roach
The smoke goes back in the blunt, the blunt gets bigger in growth
Jungle unrolls it, put his weed back in the jar
The blunt turns back into a cigar
We listen to Stevie, it sounded like heavy metal fans
Spinnin records backwards of AC/DC
I give my niggas dap, jump out the van back first
Back upstairs, took off the black shirt
I'm in the crib with the phone to my ear
Listen up so y'all can figure out the poem real clear
The voice on the phone was like, "Outside right we"
So with my mouth wide, holdin my heat
Bullets I had plenty to squeeze, plenty for ya
'Cause Jungle said, "Block your on enemies the"
Hung up the phone, then the phone rang <phone ringing>
I'm laid in the bed thinkin 'bout this pretty young thing
Who left, she came back, her clothes just fell to the rug
She fell to my bed and gave me a hug
I told her, "No hell"
She talkin 'bout, "Me kiss"
Bobbed her head then spit the nut back in my dick
Started suckin with no hands, a whole lotta spit
Then got up and put her bra back on her tits
Got fully dressed and told me, "Stressed really I'm"
Picked up her Gucci bag and left her nigga behind
Walkin through the door, she rang the bell twice
I vomited Vodka back in my glass with juice and ice
The clock went back from three, to two, to one
And that's about the time the story begun
That's when I first heard the voicemail on the cell
It said, "Son we found that nigga we gotta kill"
<Message Beep>
Ay yo son, ay yo son, you hear me, you hear me?
Listen man, this dude right on the block, right now, man
I found him, right now, I see him right now!
Let's kill him)
<Message Beep>
"Yo, this Nas, leave it. Peace"

peace

Stillmatic you say... ok here you go

Aiyyo, the brother's "Stillmatic"
I crawled up out of that grave, wipin the dirt, cleanin my shirt
They thought I'd make another "Illmatic"
But it's always forward I'm movin
Never backwards stupid here's another classic
C-notes is fallin from the sky, by now the credits roll
They're starrin Nas, executive poet, produced directed by
the Kid slash Escobar; narration describes
the lives of lost tribes in the ghetto tryin to survive
The feature opens with this young black child, fingers scratched
Cigarette burns on the sofa, turnin the TV down
While Mary Jane Girls, 45's playin, soft in the background
Food from C-Town's, mornings was hash browns
Stepped over dopefiends, walkin out the door, all of us poor
I learned the difference between the snitches, the real ones, and who's soft
And the murderous, hungriest crews
People jumping from roofs, shotguns pumping, made it through my youth
Walking very thin lines, ages seven and nine
That's the age I was on my album cover, this is the rebirth
I know the streets thirst water like Moses
Walking through the hot desert searching to be free
This is my ending and my new beginning nostalgia
Alpha and Omega places, it's like a glitch in "The Matrix"
I seen it all, did it all, most of y'all will pop for a minute
Spit a sentence then the game'll get rid of y'all
Y'all got there but y'all didn't get it all, I want my style back
Hate to cease y'all plan it's the rap repo man
To them double up hustlers, bidders, niggaz who real
Professionals, stick-up kids dreamin for mills
Let my words guide you, get inside you
From Crip to Pirus this is survival

or how about
But wait a sec', give me time to explain, women and fast cars
And diamond rings can poison a rap star
It's suicidal, how I smoke in so much la'
I saw a dead bird flyin through a broken sky
Wish I could flap wings and fly away
To where black kings and Ghana stay
So I could get on my flesh right away
But that'll be the day when it's peace
When my gat don't need to spray
When these streets are safe to play
Sex with death, indulge in these women
Vision my own skeleton swimmin in eternal fire
Broads play with pentagrams in they vagina
Like the Exorcist, then they gave birth to my seeds
I beg for God's help, why they love hurtin me?
I'm your disciple, a thug certainly
I'm the N the A to the S-I-R
If I wasn't I must've been Escobar
Forty-five in my waist, starin at my reflection
In the mirror, sittin still in the chair like my conception
When everything around me got cloudy, the chair became a king's throne
My destiny found me
It was clear why the struggle was so painful
Metamorphosis, this is what I changed to
And God, I'm so thankful

or

ALL I NEED IS ONE LIFE, ONE TRY, ONE BREATH I'M ONE MAN
WHAT I STAND FOR SPEAKS FOR ITSELF, THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND
Or wanna see me on top, too egotistical
Talkin all that slick shit, the same way these bitches do
Wonder what my secrets is, niggaz'll move on you
only if they know, what your weakness is I have none
Too late to grab guns I'm blastin cause I'm a cool nigga
Thought I wouldn't have that ass done? Fooled you niggaz
What you call a infinite brawl, eternal souls clashin
War gets deep, some beef is everlastin
Complete with thick scars, brothers knifin each other
up in prison yards, drama, where does it start?
You know the block was ill as a youngster
Every night it was like a, cop would get killed body found in the dumpster
For real a hustler, purchased my Range, niggaz throwin dirt on my name
Jealous cause fiends got they work and complain
Bitches left me cause they thought I was finished
Shoulda knew she wasn't true she came to me when her man caught a sentence
Diamonds are blindin, I never make the same mistakes
Movin with a change of pace, lighter load, see now the king is straight
Swellin my melon cause none of these niggaz real
Heard he was, tellin police, how can a kingpin squeal?
This is crazy, I'm on the right track I'm finally found
You need some soul searchin, the time is now

or how about

My skin is a art gallery, right - with paintings of crucifixes
Hopin' to save me from all the dangers in the music business
Was once a young gangsta hangin' with youth offenders
But since I tasted paper it started losin the friendships
Watchin' kids freeze in winters, they still poor
How could I tease them with Benz's and feel no remorse
Drivin' past them in the lively fashion, diamond colors clashin'
Red stones, blue stones, red bones and black ones
Fuck did I expect with bucket seats in a Lex
And spendin' time in Chuckie Cheese with Little Des
Got guns when I'm with my daughter
Hate to bring a violent aura in her presence
She knows what daddy taught her, it's lessons
Black princess it's a ugly world
I put my life up for yours, see I love that girl
Could you believe even my shadow's jealous
My skin is mad at my flesh, my flesh hates my own bones
My brain hates my heart, my heart makes the songs
Though my songs come from the Father
I'm lonely...
Hold me, it's gettin' darker

You can say what you want but the man has never slipped lyrically... you want to continually point to ochie wally, braveheart party, things of that nature, you go right aheah, but to think that there is anyone in the game that can demolish this man is straight bullshit. Can he be seen, hell yeah, anybody can. But, you have to know tha man won't go down easy... The roots are so consistant... whatever I'm not gonna knock them cause I don't listen to their music. I guess that's cause they not on any mix tape I own, no vidoe show I watch, no radio station I listen to, no topic of discussion I might come across. In fact I really don't know any roots fans... No no that's not true, I know 2, One of my co-workers, and a friend (who was living in Philly for a few years, go figure).

Ask yourself if Black Thought would do that? Nas is a phony... and I think we're about to see him get exposed. That man is a great writer... but not the prolific MC people think he is.

or even

Bernard Hopkins Vs. Felix Trinidad

This is what I compare Thought vs. Nas to. To all catts that are boxing fans yall know that Hopkins had Trinidads number just like Forest had Mosley's. To me Thought is:

Hopkins or Forest.

and Nas is like:

Mosley or Trinidad more like Mosley though.

Lyrically both are good and could be equal. This can only be proven in a battle. Just like the boxers are good in thier craft. I would say that Nas is like Sugar Shane Mosley because he has the skill pound for pound but he can be overconfident based on his popularity and catch a bad one from Thought.

Black Thought:

Battle emcee. Sometimes poetic. Nice voice and delivery. Very consistent. Sometimes too Consistent.

Nas:

More poetic. Better voice (one of the best). Delivery is sweet(one of the best). He rocks with better concepts than thought has ever been able to do. Has a identity crisis..NOT consistent.

To me the odds would lean towards Nas taking a win but dont count Thought out. Just like Forest and Hopkins he can still come up with a win. He just gotta study the tapes and come with a ill strategy. Is he capable? Yes.

I think if he and Nas do battle it would have to bring out a side of Thought that weve never seen unless Nas underetimates him and comes weak.

Beats:

This is a more objective subject. It depends on the eye of the beholder. Unless Nas pulls a Stillmatic-like recycling of some old stuff this can go either way. We all know The Roots wont let Thought bring forth a weak beat.

I think Thought should accept Nas's challenge but only if Nas blast first then its on.

If this battle is a two or three rounder like Jay vs. Nas was
I think that the Roots would prolly prove themselves better on that tip and grab up more fans with just production alone. I cant count Nas out though because he has some good peeps in his staple to grab some heat from. Lately his beats have been weak though.

Thought vs. Nas is a good match up. Nas has more to loose cause its like he's coming to the table with belts. I dont think this would end Nas career if he looses though. Nas like Thought seem to have a certain attitude bout this rap stuff. He's good but its not the Begin all - End All.

As a spectator I hope that this battle would bring the best out of both of them. Currently I dont have a vote yet cause I truly feel it could go any way. The same I felt before both boxing matches. I wanted Hopkins to beat Trinidad and I wanted Mosley to beat Forest for personal reasons. So for personal reasons I want Thought to win. I want Thought to win cause I truly think he can. Plus I want to see "Left-To-Center" Hip-Hop get some more light.

I like your response. This is a good way to look at it. However, I'm biased. I think Thought would smash Nas. It wouldn't be easy but Thought comes to the battle with a different element than Nas. I also think it would be a more legendary battle than Nas/Jay-Z because you got two "thinker/writers".

We all know Nas hits the page and takes time with his ryhmes as does Thought. Whereas Nas took Jay out pretty easy and Jay keeps comin back to try and redeem himself. Jay is mostly "the image" and "mystique", but Nas served him. Thought/Nas will make a more worthwhile battle.

If the battle takes place in the field (on stage) I definitely think Though would kill Nas. I don't think Nas can hang on the Freestyle tip. We'll see. Hopefully, The Roots will put it down on the battle front.

Yo, I am hurting right now. Nas is my favorite rapper. All yall can say what you want but those from the hood can not front on his depictions of ghetto lifestyle and feelings. Anyone who ever looked out of a project window or sat on the stoop, can feel me. But I am a philly 5-6er and Riq is my man. I spent countless hours in '92 arguing that he is the truth and that one day yall will realize it when we don't speak anymore. And you know how many of those cats I run into and say I was right. Even power 99 know I am right with the best of the Roots last friday. Riq is a master of ceremonies in all sense of the words. Nas is a story teller\prophet like the old tribe soothesayer. Why don't we all wait and see what beef he has? Don't speculate and insite some beef between two respected and talented lyricist. Nas may just be offended and needs to get shit off his chest. How would you feel if the world came at you all at once? Jay spearheaded an all out assault on my man like he bitch slapped his mom. Nas is just picking up the ashes. Anyone who has ever been rolled on knows that when it is over you want revenge on everyone involved even those who may not have thrown a blow but you see them as being part of it. Nas just probably wants to know why? Y'all act as if he has already released his album "Fuck Riq and Quest" and that isn't the case. Boy, we call ourselves okayplayas but lately yall been a bunch of okay-executioners.

NOW DON'T NOBODY SAY NOTHING ABOUT THE ROOTS...OR COMMON...OR DIALATED!!!!

Damn, Yall have a twisted out look of the world and the hood menatlity. Which is what yall forgetting a majority of the people in hip\hop from CEOs to hype men have.

I said my piece, PEACE! I mean that shit.

PS. Phattest shit I ever heard was roots cover "one love".

Yo! Check me out on the internet music section under hip\hop on www.uponthat.com.

think about it i never said anyone will get ripped a new ass hole and yes nas has skill and dope songs but he contradicts too and i said one on one battle i think thought will take him out in the long run, not destroy him but take him out

Yes, your right thought could take him out. What i don't get is people acting like thought could take nas out without an effort. I think the battle wize it is even. Plus nas just finish a major battle with jayz ( career on the line type battle), and he won. I don't know how thought would deal with a hight profile beef with nas, the roots have someting to loose also. What they have to loose is respect, if they get murdered by a so called ( bling mc) they would loose some cred. Again I do think nas had a reason to diss them, they jumped into the beef. Switching the beat from oochie wally to new york state of mine wile jayz is spitting at him, is a diss in my bool. Thats was when ever one thought nas was finish ( ether wasn't out) it was like they were dancing on the mans grave, and celebrating his death when they were happly singing along with jayz.

well true it is in away a diss cuz they played his songs, but that was their job andy band could have played those songs but since it was roots he wants to call them out!!! right?

they were paid to play songs with jay....
nas is a coward to bring it like this

and thought can't do it without effort it will be tough but i think he can do it one on one...

maybe thought should diss all those who make nas beats since the roots are getting dissed for doin jayz on unplugged

see what i mean its childish

This guy from sohh said it best.

ANY, and I repeat ANY self respecting rapper would respond if their beats were being played to diss them. They may not have intended to pick sides when they played those beats but thats exactly what it was doing. Nas was within all of his rights to diss the roots cause the roots shouldnt have played those beats in the first place. ANY self respecting rapper would be crazy not to respond to something like that, I thought he was going to adress it sooner than he actually did. I wasnt that surprised about them playing oochie wally but shook ones? I hope da mobb rips them a new asshole for that one. Bottom line I garuntee you any rapper in the game would have done it, dont be surprised if you see mobb deep come with somethin either.

my intial reaction was that thought would have it rough battlin' nas. but thought would be much more consistent so if nas would maybe come up with one or 2 things nice, thought would always come back and wouldn't foul up...

and on another thing.. about the whole beat dissen shit.. when i heard it i just figured the roots were just showin their skills being able to just switch up beats like a dj... that shit takes mad skills on insruments.. u know staying the same tempo and all that isshhh. IMO

I think they both have two of the smoothest deliveries in hip-hop and they are both very vivid and detailed, their subject matter is just different. I think Black Thought has more consistent material, but I think Nas has a more impressive body of work. Since we aren't comparing careers, sales, or production, line for line, I would give it to Nas.

One mic, Fetus, AMonks kings, doo rags, black zombies, I gave you power, Undying love, etc some of those verses that i posted up. Like it or not nas and rakim are the only two mc to reach the peak of mcing.

That's exactly what I mean by a more impressive body of work. Classic is subjective(and it's hard to be oject on the Roots website), but I think Nas has more "classic" material. U can start with his "Live At the Barbeque" verse to verses on "Stillmatic", he still shows glimpses of brilliance. Nas has always managed to show me enuff to prove he hasn't lost it. Nas had made some bullshyt, I'm not gonna front and the Roots haven't really made any wack songs(excluding Organix), but I think Nas' best work is betta.

i like some of organix why hate it?

i agree he does still have it but he doesn't use it alot he gets sidetrack and makes thoughtless tracks like that song with genuine and hate me now, but now i understand at times he does show hes got it and i think jay does too but he is not on a level nas is on.... thought needs a chance to prove he can take it

I initially liked "Organix", but after listening to it again recently, I wasn't as impressed. I think "DYWM" was more polished and everything thereafter, has been pretty equal, none of the albums have been that much betta than the last, that's not a bad thing, it just doesn't seem like they haven't taken alot of chances, which tranlates to boring for some.

You must mean lyricism. I'll put Nas and Rakim ina class with Biggie, and Thought's on the verge, but doesn't really have that mass appeal yet that all great MC's have at one time or another.Even Eminem has to be considered an exceptional lyricist, although he's a little corny.(don't front Em has skills gallore!!!)No one in hip-hop history is a better MC than KRS-ONE.From,longevity, to lyrics, to impact, to respect, to performance he has shit on lock still at age 36!!!!!!!!!!!!! Listen to the song on Sneak Attack when he talks about all the stuff he did first, and it's all true.

im sorry but has anyone listened to any nas album since illmatic cause there all completely garbage. the only good song he has done since illmatic was nas is like and he only did that i think 3 years ago. i am not a jigga fan at all but he told the truth with that 1 hot album every 10 year average and im still waiting to see if he can make a second decent one at best. "BUT HE GOT 5 MICS FOR STILLMATC"... the source hasnt been reputible for nearly 5 years now ever since they gave life after death 5 or made men 4.5. i believe that thought hasnt been in any big battles cause emcees are scared and especially in this case nas stepped to the whole crew. i wanna see another posse cut longer than the session just ripping nas and the garbage hes done (did people forget about QB's finest and/or the firm????). maybe its just the fact that im a roots head but is this really even a competition, this is like tee-ball for bonds, all nas did was set himself up to finally blow the roots up (not just thought).

They're both great rappers. Thought is a excellent MC. Nas is a excellent Lyricist. They're both one of favorite rappers and I have nothing bad to say about them. I feel The Roots did a favor to the hip hop community when they decided to represent on MTV Unplugged. I would have prefered they they do it for themselves than for Jay but that's how MTV works so I don't blame them.

But to be honest Nas better.

yo, people are talkin bout how this could be a good opportunity for the roots to get publicity, but i aint even thinkin about that. personally, as a kid who takes pride in a good lyrical contest, i say this is a good ol hip-hop issue.
i respect every single one of these roots guys...for the music they make...for the sincerity and integrity i sense from them (i.e. the acceptance speeches at the grammy's, seeing them with fans after shows). of course, without publicity, no one would get to hear the roots, but all im saying is that i think the primary objective is to ...represent/stand up for themselves.
nas called the roots "phony". and he referred to them as a bunch of rappers. obviously, he doesnt know enough about them. the rappers are thought, malik, and dice (sometimes)..and thats all.
man, this is the roots...let the world know.

Thought can burn a hole through Nas...I want to hear 100 bars over a breakbeat...LOL....

some of y'all are tripping. nas has NEVER been a battle rhymer, while thought has been criticized for having TOO MANY battle raps (if you remember the posts saying that about "Things Fall Apart"). hell, "ether" isn't even much of a battle rap till the third verse...and like main man said, Nas ain't got no ammo on Thought...Nas' pink baggy suit wearing ass is gonna catch an L...

Man...usually I don't like to see cats skirmishing but THIS ONE is something I wanna see...

Which one would I rather listen to....

An MC who's great with words but is short on versatility and high on long-winded "battle rhymes?"

An MC who has slipped in the past, but has made some of the best songs in hip-hop history?

"Of course N-A-S are the letters that spell...."

Plus, alot of you are sleeping on Nas's flow. It's one of the best.

if you wanna pic on thought for lack of versatily in topics (which can be debated), you need to also point out Nas's lack of versatily in flow and voice. He finally did switch it up (like jay told him to) and i'm sorry... DESTROY AND BUILD sounds like shit.

Voice I'll give you, but do you honestly think that ever since Illmatic, Nas never changed his flow up??!!

You don't like "Destroy and Rebuild?" Well, the beat may leave more to be desired, but I think it's one of the best songs on the album. It's a multi-layered diss song that works on three levels...

-It's a diss, but told in a storytelling style.
-It's him paying homage to Slick Rick.
-Even though he's scolding the dudes on there, it's more like if you're pops spanks that as. He's only doing it because he loves you, and you needed it. There's really a call for slidarity buried underneath all of this.

it'll be close, but NAS has more venom. It's basically the same way he beat Jigga with Either. Jigga's rhyme wasn't that weak it was all in the presentation, he didn't have that grime, that grit, that Either in his delivery and Nas did. I think thought can go flow for flow, but NAS has that venom when he spits on a battle rhyme that I don't think thought has. It's a coin toss.

Personally, I think nas and Black Thought should Battle, and i don't mean lyrically. I mean physically like a televised boxing match,Promoted by Don King in association with Coca Cola with Krs One as the Referee. I mean Nas has no chance in trying to win a lyrical battle with Black Thought because the Bad Luietaenat (sp?) would burn Nas like the joint I'm smoking right now. So i'm thinking he might last 1 round in a boxing match BT, but then get his skinny "oochie wally" ass kicked in the second, getting his fixed tooth chipped again as he drops to the mat, while BT stands over him like Ali. I would pay $50...

Better yet make it a wrestling match...

Seriosly, y'all I mean this post is absurd and i am joking, but come on Nas winning a lyrical battle with BT?

Why Must This Be So Personal?

Frankly, even though BT is nice, he has not reached Nas'Level.
We Have Yet To See Him Do Any Solo projects to show off his skills. As far as the Nas Statements,You Know the Saying,"(opinions are Just Like an asshole, everybody's got one!) And I agree, when "what they do" came out,
THEY WERE MAKING A DIRECT STATEMENT at rappers who are in it for the "BLING BLING" and later do exactly what they were supposedly opposed to when making the song so it seems quite contradictory!

BUT THEY ARE ENTITLED TO CHANGE THEIR MINDS!
NOT MAD AT THEM AT ALL!

I hope this battle wasn't just for BT to prove himself to be better! (they're both nice in their own right)

But when it comes down to my opinion,

A mans skill level isnt determined by the impact he's made. Black Thought and the Roots collectively, their time will come. But dont tell me that Black Thought wont crush Nas, just because he aint considered one of the top ten MC's ever by BET or the Source. It all goes back to Skill.

>We Have Yet To See Him
>Do Any Solo projects to
>show off his skills.
>As far as the Nas

Ok and thats all good, but Nas could have gave his "opinion" without disrespectin Black Thought directly, and the rest of the crew. If the man would have simply said... "I didnt appreciate the Roots being involved" or somethin to that effect it would be another story. But this man got on the radio talkin big shit like he got somethin personal against them. Its not like Flex asked him about the Roots. Nas was obviously determined to get a word in about the Roots before he left... probably had that shit on a Note in his pocket. If Nas was the mature cat he claims to be, he would have contacted The Roots and/or Black Thought directly before comin out his mouth like that.

Thats your opinion, but the roots werent jumpin around stage screamin fuck Nas. They were doin thier thing, and thier thing is doin HOT shows. They made the show HOT, PERIOD. What about everyone in the audience singin along? Fuck them too? Shit if i was there i'd be singin along too. Nas is a great writer, but he's also a chump.

You make that quite clear!

"And I agree, when "what they do" came out, THEY WERE MAKING A DIRECT STATEMENT at rappers who are in it for the "BLING BLING"
They were making a statment about rappers being so cliche with their videos, never did they put emphasis on any rapper yo! (BTW, the director edited the video in a way that the Roots felt wasnt right exactly to their liking, not like they have that much sawy to have had it re-edited {go to ?uest's faqs area, he goes into the whole "we werent trying to single out any rappers in that video"} )

"and later do exactly what they were supposedly opposed to when making the song so it seems quite contradictory!"
What did they exactly do? They were the backing band! I dont recall seeing them holding up flutes of Crystal up over their heads!!

but how did they "do exactly what they were opposed to"?

they said "never do what they do". the song is about NOT FOLLOWING TRENDS. the roots crew would only contradict that song if they completed changed their *musical style*. Working with Jay Z on an Unplugged special isn't a trend, they're the only ones to ever do it! LOL! Y'all kill me...

And Nas acting like The Roots are anti-champagne shows that his ass must have stopped listening to hip-hop records in 96, because on the same album "What They Do" is on, Thought refers to himself as "The Land whipper, the cham(pagne) sipper", so how the fuck did Nas think Thought and the gang were anti-champagne? "And then they go and make a record with the king of champagne sipping". Sure, why not? They probably sipped champagne with Jay in the club before Unplugged even happened...lol.

Nas is all confused, man. Like how Nas went from "As far as Gods, Nas ain't believing none of that shit" to have GOD'S SON tatted on his belly. Dude is all confused....and he's calling The Roots hypocrites? I don't get it, man....clean your own house...

Loving Philly, hating the NYC teams, and consequently developping an eternal inferiority complex, it's the bshell.

My final Eagles football prediction of the season, quoted from the Eagles NFC East Champion Post:

"Mark this down, because I'm about to educate your ass. The Bucs are going to spank us this week in Tampa--the Bucs LOVE to use meaningless games to puff out their chest. Everyone will jump off the bandwagon for the playoff game, but we'll return the favor and serve them by at least 10 in our house. Then we're going into Chicago and taking it from the Bears--we'll get up early, do a decent job containing the A-Train (under 100) and pick off Miller 3 times. Then we'll go to St. Louis and lose by at least 10, but there's no disgrace in that. We'll have shown that we're the second best team in the conference and be set up for next year. You don't have to believe it yet, but you have to give it up when it does happen."

i think this shit would be boring as FUCK. thought is a braggadocio, battle-style emcee, who's never really battled anybody, so none of you (except kamal and a SELECT few who may have heard things 99.44% of us haven't) have NO idea how well he can come personally.

meanwhile, nas is a story-teller and descriptive lyricist (one of the best ever at this) who showed on ether that he's just NOT cut out to battle head-on. that's not a knock to his skills as a lyricist, it's a knock at his ability to really come hostile on a track. take a football metaphor. nas is like bobby taylor in the jay-z conflict. he's one of the best coverage corners in football, but he can't tackle in the open field. or think of him like barry vs. bettis. bettis will run all over you, barry will just make you miss. you catch barry sanders blind-side, you'll knock him a fucking mile. but that doesn't mean he won't put up 100 on you his own way.

but christ, i'm not excited about this at ALL....

hear ye, hear ye, All ye inhabitants of Okayland,
The the appointed time is near, the prophecy nearly fulfilled.
The Grand Battle Hip Hop Armageddon is brewing. Where all the MCs great and small,(e.g. black thought and me) wack and dope(e.g. too short and mos def) shall gather in one park and BATTLE.
Yea, it shall be a terrible day!!! Balls of spit inumerable shall fly, neurons firing till they runneth out of vesicles, bad breath shall abound, but fear not, is this not the essence of Hip Hop? the challenge, the retort, the oooohs and aaaahs of quick wit. It has come full circle to where it all began!! East to West, North to South. Prepare thine ears for thou shalt hear dope lyrics the likes of which have never been heard before and shall not be heard ever again.
There are those who do not believe that Black Thought should reply to the infidel Nasir sbuh(shit be upon him)
Well, What the fuck do thou thinkest Black Thought rappeth about in his albums (All 5 of them)? HIS SKILLS!!!!!!
Fools, BT has consistantly prophecied about how no one can withstand his mic skills. How long will ye doubt? Now the time has come. BT fear not, nor let thine heart be trouble. ?uest shall be at thine right hand, Kamal at thine left. Together they shall give thee the dopest, funkiest, slamminest, raw organic, battle beat to ever ooze between the ears of mankind. Do not worry about albums sales, think only of thine honor as MC. Nasir sbuh will crumble like dog doodoo before thee. He shall run and call on upon help from Puffy and his wack minions. Then shall the Grand battle begin. Jay Z shall repent from his wayward tongue and drop conscious lyrics alongside thee and other okay MCs.
the battle shall be fierce, for puffy shall call Dr. Dre in an attempt to out do thee, Eminem and Ice Cube shall join the enemy in hopes of redeeming shattered face. Fear not. Pete Rock, Primo, Jay Dee, shall come to thine aid. Eve shall join thee and denounce lil kim, foxy brown shall wash the makeup off and repent as well. Wycleff shall join the chosen at the request of spragga benz foxy's boyfriend, (don't worry clef won't mc he just helps with the beats) but lauryn shall show up with pras whom she has been secretly training and he shall be tiiiight. The Black Sheep shall finally get it together. However, KRS-One will reveal his secret alliance with Puffy (which would explain his wackness lately) but fear not Outkast shall rebuke him. All the chosen MCs shall join thee. The spittle shall fly.
The infidels will use their buisness connections to lie to the masses,
they shall hire hos to shake phat asses
tempt thee with champaign glasses
but with eyes of eagles thou must look pass it
they are infidels and wack bastards.

Be strong, for in the final hour Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye shall appear in matching jump suits(red gold and green) and a boombox to cleanse the earth of all wackness. Tupac and Biggie shall rise from the dead holding hands. Nappy headed children shall all dance and recite the classics. John Ashcroft shall discover that his grandmother was black and then commit suicice. All shall be well.

I'm a hardcore fan forreal.. I even bought unplugged, but leme set add a coupla points to argue

1-Much props go to narrative emcees.. Thought is a narrative emcee (Silent Treatment, You Got Me, Section, Hypnotic, etc.) and it takes a lot more skill to get into character and flex verbal muscle from a point of view that's not always your own than it does to diss
2-Nas is also consistent.. even if he's consistently put out mediocre shit for the past few years.. emcees are emcees, they run their show. It's up to the heads to decide if they actually attend.
3-Breath Control... Jay-Z ain't got it. Period. Unplugged proves that. But Nas and Black Thought got it locked.. anybody hear the Root live? (kidding) and Nas can flow seamlessly from verse to verse if he wants.

Point Blank... I don't know about a battle, but I do know a collab between the two would be Stricty Dope!!!

I'd also like to see the drummer say a lil' bit here, since he did give much props to Nas in his reviews...
How about it Quest?*

That people can say that Nas isn't a great "battle" rapper, and that Thought would get in his ass from the start, when Nas made one of the best diss records in recent years.

THAT fuckin' befuddles me.

What record are you referring to???

'H To The Homo' = witty but dry and ineffective

'Ether' = Too Long and childish. Only had two good darts over 3 long verses. Its obvious why the public loves it. "Jay-Z is gay, Jay-Z is ugly, Jay-Z is wack, Jay-Z is a Tae-Bo Ho". Exciting stuff but is he really sayin anything?

'Destroy And Rebuild' = A bitch move gettin at his boys like that out of no where. Then tryin to patch it up at the same time. Nas is a chump. "Yo I think you a lil Bitch, but I only said that cause you my boy and I'm tryin to help you grow... Oops did a million people hear me say that??!?!" --- Nasty Nasir. Plus the man sounds like ASS doin Slick Rick. Stick to your voice Nas.. please.

Umm, no.

The whole song was the brilliant systematic break-down of a man. He says alot of things in that song. I wrote a long post about this song in another post, but laziness will prevent me from reiterating the points I made. I may find the post, and copy and paste later on.

BTW, this song isn't anymore childish than "The Bitch in Yoo", "Second Round K.O.", "10% Dis", "No Vaseline", OR "Takeover". This is fucking HIP-HOP music, not debates about class struggles or stem cell research. Insults will be thrown.

Que???

Prodigy has been throwing indirect jabs at Nas for the longest, and Nature was talking bad about him in interviews, like Cormega. This nigga Cormega could NOT keep Nas's name out of his mouth. The Source, XXL, Vibe...and online mags all have interviews with him talking about Nas in some way. It was revolting! He even dissed Nas a couple of times on "The Realness" (Thun and Kiko w/Prodigy, and Get Out My Way). This shit wasn't "out of the blue" at all. Your "boys" dont talk greasy behind your back or mention your name through the magazines.

I already explained my stance on "Destroy and Rebuild". Funny, well thought-out homage to Slick Rick.

How is it a systematic brilliant breakdown when over 3/4's of it aint based on truth? Lets see if you can explain... and do you know what systematic means? HAHA

'Bitch In Yoo' childish?!??! I suggest you read the lyrics to that before you speak on it. That song is what you THINK ether is. He does call Cube a "Bitch" at the begining of the first verse, on the hook, and at the end of the last verse but everything in between is Com dismantling Cube.

Second Round K.O. - Another song 90% or more based in TRUTH... not name calling. Of course canibus throws in a couple empty threats but thats his style. Ether is still NO COMPARISION. Plus 'Second Round K.O.' is a straight BANGER.

'No Vaseline' - Some name calling but this song speaks on a lot of issues between himself in the NWA including the breakup. Again you just talkin out ya ass.

>Prodigy has been throwing indirect jabs
>at Nas for the longest,

Show me...

>and Nature was talking bad
>about him in interviews, like
>Cormega.

Nature, like cormega was promised a solo deal by Nas and the label... then didnt get backed up by Nas when the label folded on him. Nature's actually did come out but WAYYY after his buzz had built and faded off.

>I already explained my stance on
>"Destroy and Rebuild". Funny,
>well thought-out homage to Slick
>Rick.

Funny? Nas and Comedy is like peanut butter & ketchup
Well thought-out? maybe... Nas actually was mature with this dis unlike 'Ether'.

Still... Listen to a track like 'Til The Break of Dawn' by LL where he ripped Kool Moe, Hammer, and ICE Cube. LL's style is more comical and has a lot of name-calling, like Nas but peep the constrast in execution. If you gonna dis... you gotta come wit it.

ok.. so i remember hearin illimatic and thinkin that Nas was the shit... i mean 'i gave you power' was the joint, but... here's the deal.. Nas has fallen off... i mean the record indusrty pimps niggas everyday and he's no exception....to some degree or another, no one is...// so when it comes to the issue of who's harder... or whatever... that doesn't really matter.. it's more like, who will be remembered in 50 years.. will the roots be the Coltrane of this generation..? probably... will Nas? nope.... i could give a fuck about street cred..will people look back and say who were the people who pushed the envelope and look at people like digable planets, the roots, saul williams, ursula rucker, 4 hero, dj shadow, prefuse 73.. yep... will people look back and say the same thing about these flash-in-the-pan niggas... nope.. they are only as important as long as they are marketable... if you measure your success by how much money you make.. then i guess all the Nas heads are right.. but material possesions mean nothing when making history.. hip-hop is no longer just confined to the US.. it is a global phenom...there are people bumping our shit in Pakistan.. these cats like Jay z and Nas.. they are just the ambassadors of materialism... all those that don't like what i'm sayin go ahead and hate... but what matters is not some dumb shit beef.. what matters is the longevity of black music, not the further compromising of an art form that love for the sake of record sales..

a few things,
first of all i think it would be a dope battle.
secondly, Stillmatic is a dope record, and Ether was vicious, it made Jay-Z look childish, like when he says he's like a proud father...

Nas has the flow, the classic album/albums, but imagine no instruments, just ?uest rockin some ill drum roll and black thought comin strong at Nas and then the drums pick up and thought just rips into him...i think it would be a good battle, the fact that Nas put out some good albums don't mean shit in a battle, the Roots got classics too, fuck that, they're more versatile they can diss nas a million different ways, scratch or razhel can come through with some dis too...i hope the Roots do respond cause Nas is being a baby, i love Nas, but that shit he said about bamboozled was stupid, it's a movie, and the dreadlock shit was stupid, Thought don't even have em', and there's nothing "fake" about the Roots, if there has ever been a "real" hip-hop group it's them.

while i don't think nas would be the clear-cut winner, i think he would win none-the-less. here are some of my reasons for my decision and some responses to things said previously on this thread.

reasons:

nas still rips it. granted, a lot of his stuff is weak now, but whenever he gets a real beat, he's *still* amazing. just listen to the tracks on his new disc that are produced by premiere and large professor. he is unquestionably one of the most talented lyricists to ever live. it should be no disrespect to black thought that i give nas the edge, it's just that i feel only a handful of lyricists have the skills to *possibly* give it to nas (big l(rip), rakim, krs-one, mos def).

responses:

"think common vs ice cube"... i wish this was the case, but i don't think ice cube has shit on nas lyrically.

"black thought is more consistent"... yeah, maybe he is, but we're talking about one track where the pressure is on nas. also, while black thought has consistency on his side, i don't think he's ever blessed a track like nas when he's motivated.

i think a lot of people on here are saying black thought is because they want him to win. i do too, but i don't think he would be. i totally agree what black thought and the roots stand for, and it bothers me that nasty nas is now nas escobar, but does this really matter? don't sleep on nas just because he's about what i'm guessing most of us on this message board are not... i'll end this with a fitting quote: "a dope mc, is a dope mc" -krs one.

I've been around for a min, and been meaning to post this for a while.

As much of a fan as I am of The Roots and BT, I can't see them on the same lyrical plane in terms of battling.

BT is the concious, educated, dub poet-type, sushi eating, head-nodding emcee.

Nas on the other hand, despite his classic is on that vulgar, street gamin, listen to while doin 'dro type of emcee.

Regardless of BT's lyrics, his voice alone would disassociate itself with the idea of battling.

I'm not gonna choose sides, cuz I'm an avid listener of BT. The styles are just too hard for me compare...

ONE.

What is it that NaS said about the Roots? I'm not even sure. Black Thought and NaS are both great MC's. But I do believe that NaS would rip shit. He has that flow when he gets in someone's ass that is undeniable.

DaaaaaaaaaMN!!! Nas be preachin'. Some of the things are real but some are not. I don't feel he should dictate what other peeps should do with their careers. Videos are just videos none of it is really real. I love them both for the words they speak and their style. When Nas did "You Owe Me" I didn't flake out on him cuz I know he's a man wit skill. Now Nas came out wit Stillmatic and gets 5 mics. The Roots have always been a favorite of mine when they backed Jay up I was like bravo. Jay-Z has gotten so commercial over the years it was almost like having one of the best hip hop bands bless his flow and put a spin on his regular radio joints. Roots are still hot! They make themselves who they are and no one can fuck that up. If Nas made a joint wit Christina Aguleria or whatever I'd knock him for 60 seconds like everyone else but hey I would never front on his talent. I know Nas was pissed when cats jumped on his Nastradamus and I Am cd's cuz he went a lil commericial wit Ginuwine and P Diddy so I don't think he has room to knock the Roots. Tho I did question them for backing Jay just for 60 seconds. All in all the Unplugged CD was way better than the original... go Jaguar!!
