these cats are so used to seeing people like Jay push hundreds of thousands in a week that they won't even recognize that as a success...but that is DEFINITELY a big debut for a female R&B artist...especially without a mega-platinum producer behind her single or whatever...

It's on subscription basis. Don't call me a hater, but that's kinda weak especially since the CD was mad cheap. I've been talking to alot of people about the album, and some of the older folks, 32-45 aren't feeling all the cursing. I know some may feel they're out of the demo, but yo they are really supporting the "neo-soul" artists. These are the same people who copped Jill, India.Arie, Erykah, Musiq, Maxwell, D'Angelo, and one cat in particular (pretty open-minded) said that he wasn't feeling Bilal for the same reason. All the best to Jag, 'cause I thought the album was cool, but the language is definitelty alienating folks. Partcularly some of those listeners who listen to the Adult R&B stations. Those folks buy albums!!! "Cause they have the discretionary income, and alot of them aren't computer savvy enough to download the stuff off the net.

21k, Jag is in for an uphill battle, hope she has a hot second single. 'Cause she damn sure can't push the album by touring in her pregnant state.

But by the way LG, could we get some soundscan #'s on other relevant artists latest works? Reflection Eternal, LWFC, De La Soul, Bilal, Mos Def...

That was an "okay" first week-definitely not the best, but certainly nothing to brag about. MCA definitely needs to throw some PUSH behind her album rather than a revamped Mary joint. Does Jag even have a video? Oh, and the cursing does affect her-believe me. I love her, but I'm not blind to the fact that she turn a lot of people off with her language.

Ya'll are trippin'...21K is a great debut for an unknown artist. With NO video, NO radio....strictly press and word of mouth, thats a great start. MCA shouldn't be braggin' i agree...Spend some money, get a video, get more radio play...

Label Guy...Tell'um how many units The Roots sold first album, first week. (I was there...it wasn't pretty)

I hate bashin' okayplayers but...if you don't know what you're talking about...

see my earlier post, the first reply in this piece...

no video rotation, no real radio rotation, and moving 21,000? that's like selling 21,000 *indie* (cuz the only real diff b/t indie and major label artists, 5 times outta ten, is the indie guys never get radio or video rotation).

(and I don't think the press ads helped)

All I can figure is that the appearance on Unplugged and the (relatively) steady touring + word of mouth did it.

I work within the business, 21k is sorry. Fuck that let's be frank, they can build with it, since it's an R&B album, but as far as a first week total that is totally lackluster. You say it would be good if it was a "indie" artist-but shit Jaguar is signed to a MAJOR laber putting up MINOR numbers. As far as cat's not knowing what they talking about, save that shit.

Now, name for me the female R&B artist in 2000/2001 who did over 20,000 in their debut week with virtually no radio or video play.

Better yet, scroll down to the part of the thread where label_guy compares Jag's stats with other "famous" debuts (she tops debuts from the roots, jill (even tho she was on MTV2 almost on the daily before her joint dropped!), and several others).

8,000 her first week out.

and her video came 3 weeks later.

so in hindsight, this is no nsync. but this to me explains the power of the net, the press, and satellite cable (mtv2).....

and jag of course.

so let's hope the powers that be (read my label) wont let a good thing (read res album) go to waste.

I know you're out of the behind the scenes RES loop but you're a little too early to call it a "waste".... the next 3 months will tell the tale.
#1 - her video is dope (we spent some $ - Gregory Dark directed it) and was well received at MTV this week...already added this week to VH1
#2 - we impact at Top 40 in 2 weeks and the response at radio in the Top 50 markets has been very positive so far
#3 - she's opening for Mary J Blige on her month-long European tour. she switched agents who has solid tour offers after she gets back from Europe

lies!!!!!
CAA be creepin up on WMA acts on some jerry maguire shit, promising shit to artists and not delivering. contrare....wise woulda been for res to be at an agency in which there are SIMILAR artists so that she may tour with them.

and with every left to center act in black music at WMA.....wouldn't you want your artist there too so that you can benifit on some instant opening act shit?

i blame res' managment for that one. performing is the only thing that kept us alive for so long. that's the shit i'd look at when making up my mind where do i go.....

i know no CAA artist surviving without a hit record. case and point (macy)

album flop.
tour stop.
caa....

And normally profanity on a record doesn't bother me none, but some of the language on her joint seemed a bit gretuitous...like i'ma curse just to show i aint takin' no shorts and i'ma a "strong black woman from the ghetto" naaaaaawww...

have you ever seen her perform? cuz she curses waaaay more and she is muuuuch "stronger" on stage, the album is a more tame and focused studio jag, so trust that them curses is not just provin a point, they are probably more likely the curses that they didnt take out

In response to Reply # 2

SoundScan is on a subscription basis and they definitely price it for Record Companies that can afford. You pay quarterly and the prices range from 1,500 per quarter for demographics on 1 genre to 14k per quarter for full access. Definitely not for the "shoestring budgeteers"

'prov....unfortunately in Motive's situation we don't control the purse strings. I mean we have an imprint but MCA still controls all of the budgets. It's kinda like finally getting your own room, but you're still in your parents house...so you still can't do shit. They make all of the decisions as to how to allocate funds. Jag's first week numbers aren't earth shattering like Mary,...etc. but you can't really compare her to a Mary. I mean in order to put it in perspective, examine 2 artists that have had similar situations (no video, no radio before album dropped) Res and Jill Scott. Res did about 7K (I think) her first week without a video or major radio play and Jill did about 10K (I think) in the same situation, so if you compare apples to apples then I'd say Jag did relatively well.

The key is to follow Jill's lead and continue the momentum...granted we don't have a video now, but hopefully the folks that control the purse strings will put some money behind a video, and we can continue the momentum. Now is the time to get the word out and spend some money. Hopefully we've proven that Jag could provide a great return on MCA's investment.

The industry is BUZZING STRONG about Jaguar, and the content feeding frenzy is in full swing as media publications and websites are trying to have pictures, and articles, Q&A, and contests, and reviews... trying to show 'HEY LOOK WHAT WE GOT ON JAG'. The video shoot istself is no big secret, but completed versions DO exist... it was just 'unauthorizedly' added to their site.

That was a good question. The video has been sitting here 2 weeks since it was shot last Aug. If it was to be public, we would have long since showed it right here on OKP. pictures and video stuff from 'The Making Of The Video' (that never was) would be all over the place.

Such as life.

The most important thing a lot of people are missing is that the album isn't very good. The cursing is definitely a turn off, and you don't really like Jag as an artist. The foul liner notes where she's calling out her in laws, is just crass. Jill's album was good, so it sold itself through GOOD word of mouth. Jag's Cd will not sell that well, because it simply isn't that good. Press, or no press if it's not good product it won't sell. Not unless you're Clive Davis and can overhype an album like he did Alicia's CD (so overrated its ridiculous and criminal), this CD will not take off. I saw Jag live when she played before Maxwell in Chicago and she was madd nice. She has a great voice. But I was very disappointed with the "experience" of the CD.

Remember.....these are the days of your Life. Don't forget that.

No the Cd isn't a Jill Scott or Erykah Badu, but it is good for a new artist with damn near no funds (you know how MCA does there artists).

True the cussing is a turn off, but hopefully people that really like the cd, but prefer no cursing, will go and purchase a clean version. I mean hell, if you spend $7 on the one with explicit lyrics (give it away), and spend another $7 for the one with clean lyrics, you've just paid for a regular price cd. But you have also enlightened someone else with music when you give it away.

I'm curious to see why you think the CD is "terrible". I think it sounds good and don't hear anything remarkably unlistenable on it. "Terrible" is a very strong word. "Terrible" = unlistenable. I disagree with you completely.

ps: To those complaining about the cursing, you've got to be kidding me...you'll hear WAY more cursing on an album by "conscious" artists like Common or Kweli than you'll hear on the Jag album...I wouldn't recommend the album to devout Christians or anything, but since when has contemporary R&B been squeaky clean? Did y'all hate "Shit Damn Motherfucker" too?

Come on bro', like it or not there is a double standard that we apply to R&B vs. Hip-Hop music. That's likely because we're more accustomed to rappers using profanity. We can accept in doses with R&B artists (the aforementioned D'Angelo, Prince etc.), but when it's on damn near every song, it gets a little too much. It is what it is.

Is she supposed to stop being who she is? Personally, I wouldn't have _ever_ called folks out like that but that's me...she's not me, I'm not her. Why do folks get so caught up in images, personalities, etc.? Jag can sing her ass off and I like cd. Granted, she's no Jill but she's good, nonetheless. Her cd is far from crap. the "experience" of the cd? what's that? Her music is all that should be judged. Not her personality, how she lives her life, her image, etc.
I showed a co-worker a picture of Jag after she'd come running to me, talking about she's heard "SUCH good things about this girl" and she frowned, saying "what's w/ her hair?" she immediately got stuck on image and didn't even give the girl a chance (my co-worker is an oreo who despises natural hairstyles). I suppose that's why Jill didn't want her face to be shown on her cd, etc. She wanted to be judged on her music.

But then, to each his own. I think her cd is a good first effort.

It's okay for Jag to be who she is, no question. But without the big budget and press, being an unlikeable artist/person doesn't help. But the CD itself, the music itself, just isn't that good. It's not the worst, but it wasn't good. I only used the Jill analogy because her CD sold because of word of mouth, which is how it seems that Jag's CD will have to sell. It's without question that Jag can sing, and live she's good, but the CD lacks a lot.

It has nothing to do with her hair or how she looks, although I know what you mean when people are suddenly turned off by an artist who looks "cultured" or "conscience", I've seen people do that too. But, I'm just saying in order for a CD to sell well by word of mouth, people have to like it and say good things about it. This CD is not good. I will not tell my peeps to go out and cop this CD because it isn't good enough to recommend. It ain't the worst, but I wouldn't RECOMMEND it. I hope she does a second Cd and get better production from producers who can bring out the raw talent she has. She can definitely rock it live, but she's gotta show it on the CD too.

Remember.....these are the days of your Life. Don't forget that.

jag's singing performance is on point. not like i can say for most rnb diva's in which you can hear flat notes galore

perhaps it's just me but lovers rock didn't hardly move me as much as the previous 4 did.

and even though i was part of the production team of "mama's gun", i can count a few moments i could do without, not to mention some cleanup work that coulda been done engineerwise.

ang's album is growing on me.

i already fucks with res and jill.

so i agree with some of your choices.

but jag is in my top 5.

(this sade album is not. i love her lyrics, and melody....but i am so accustomed to her previous production work, that i just feel it is a step backwards

yes this coming from a man involved with 3 major production changes of cats y'all wouldn't mind doing the same album over and over and over again (ery, d, com))

you are probably the first person i heard say that cuz that's exactly how i feel. Sade's music has always spoken directly to me and I was so let down by Lover's Rock that i barely even play it any more. Every other Sade fan i talk to is sooooo in love with Lover's Rock but i swear i just don't understand why.

cleanups or not, mamas gun i think is the better record in virtually all aspects. jags album should be compared to baduizm in my humble opinion, not mamas gun. its a great debut, maybe a little more streamlined than people expected but its more than solid.

It's obvious that you're a perfectionist brother, and it comes across most of the time with your projects. But damn if I've heard a flawless album, it's "Mama's Gun" (Minus the confusion with the track listing). I was just listening to that the other day and I was privately giving you props for being part of that masterpiece. "AD 2000", easily one of my favorite album cuts of the last few years.

I don't think the Jag album is bad (the cursing does bother me a bit, as it did with Bilal), but I really have to give it a chance to grow on me. And I got a kick out of her liner notes. Funny as hell.

Funny, of all the ones I listed, Sade was the last one I thought you'd disagree with. I've never been a huge Sade fan, 'cause she never had brothers in her videos back in the day (my issue), but I liked "Lovers Rock" better than the one with "No Ordinary Love" on it.

But back to the original question, your ranking of Jag's album, more a statement of the quality of the album, or the sad state of R&B?

By the way, I miss your reviews, bless us when schedule permits.

i'm surprised you didn't point that out, questo.

i don't even think res herself would claim to be an r&b artist. she strikes me more as alt-rock.

anyone disagree?

point is, it's not whether jag's album is so good or her peers are so bad. it's both. LOL. jag has a good album AND a lot of her peers in r&b are lacking.

i don't think too many people would argue that it's the best r&b album released so far this year. the raphael saadiq album is coming though...

bust out a knife.. peep this..
"The most unusual success in next week's chart is Keke Wyatt's Soul Sista, which will appear at #43 with nearly 25,000 copies sold last week. When the R&B album was released in mid-November, it debuted at #60 but fell to #190 by Christmastime. Then over the holidays, Wyatt allegedly stabbed her husband five times with a steak knife. Ever since, Soul Sista has been steadily rising up the chart, moving to #143, #95, #77, #67, #50 and #43 in the weeks following the alleged incident. The single "Nothing in This World" has been receiving major spins at radio, and the LP has sold more than 250,000 copies. "

Without changing the subject to much... I think it is a little sick that we live in a world where people will go out of their way to buy something that they normally wouldn't because the artist allegedly stabbed someone... Thats sicks. But I guess thats partly how Eminem gained his celebrity. Just be a jerk, kill a few people, maybe get arrested and then your shit sells.

About the JAG album... I personally have seen JAG numerious time at what was the Black LIlly at the wetlands back in the day. I was always happier when she was in attendance and when she contributed to the show. I must say that I was a little dissapointed with the album as a whole... I like An't nobody playing which I think was partly spawned at the lillies. Big up to Scott Storch who hooked up the keys and production... (I must admit that being a jew I love seeing the TuffJew name as a credit.) I personally feel like JAG can do better work and I look foward to seeing her move to the next level. Good luck and say fuck you to the haters.... Peace ~Geppetto

So many albums come out in the R&B field that it's pretty easy to miss a newcomer (particularly since radio has fairly closed playlists), so what probably happened was, the stabbing incident got KeKe name recognition in urban markets and people checked out the album, liked it, and spread the word. It's kinda like how Pac got name recognition just for constantly getting arrested and then for his incendiary comments in Vibe interviews, then people tuned into his albums and discovered they actually dug his stuff (having Dre produce and rap on "California Love" obviously played a big part too).

tomorrow, i'm heading out to buy jaguars album.

1. when do the non soundscan purchases finally trickle down into the published sales totals?

2. i usually buy music from an independent store in my area. i've noticed that a number of CDs i've purchases there, are labled as being made in Canada, by record company X, Y or Z located in Canada. where does the credit for my purchase show up in published stats. US or Canada?

although, i'm one person buying her album, i want that one album to count early.

>1. when do the non soundscan

they are "estimated" in the overall number. For instance, independent store in a certain area may be "weighted" so that when you buy 1 there, soundscan may counts it as 4 sold for the entire area by estimating that 3 other NON-soundscan stores in the area also sold one simulateously.

If its a Canadian release, it is technically an import with a different bar code so it won't be counted along with the US album with a certain bar code.
Don't think it counts for Canadian scans if bought in a US store.

Has Jag charted on the top 200 yet? you only gave the numbers for her. Is she a heatseeker on billboard? Is there a set number she has to reach before she can be a heatseeker?

second week it dropped to 82.

nazdak just posted the 2nd week sales numbers and said she did 17,000. that means she held pretty steady, which is amazing considering she STILL doesn't really have a presence at video and -- unless I'm mistaken -- she doesn't have a video in rotation yet either. that puts about $400,000 in MCA's coffers for two weeks' work ($10 an album, roughly). Um. Maybe they could take 200,000 of that and shoot a video? Heh.

...well, in the ordinary world, this ain't a problem, but in VIDEO world, it IS a problem.

jag is pregnant.

I take it this means the corporate guys aren't trying to shoot her first video until she conceives?

Sigh.

I guess if they are concerned about that, they could shoot her from the chest up, right?

I'm only assuming this is a problem, but for videos, the female image is...well...definitely not being pregnant.

54. "The Truth About Boot"
In response to Reply # 45

San Francisco (Reuters) - After an exhaustive search, hip-hop journalist Cheo Coker has finally located the gay rapper: Nasir "Nas" Jones, known better to Internet newsgroup posters as BootenLeeFonsworth.

"I was shocked when I discovered Nas was posting on our boards," noted an exasperated Hub, of hip-hop band The Roots, between chew sticks. "I was even more shocked when one of our Web masters traced his IP address to a computer located in a gay porn post production facility."

Hub was not the only hip-hop figure to be shocked that Booten was the first rapper outted online. Superstar rapper Jay-Z also registered some surprise. "Well, when he talked about me having 'd--k sucking lips', I was questioning his sexuality, but once I found out he was posting on the Internet under an assumed name about me, I was pretty much convinced. The baggy pink suit was a tip-off, too." When asked whether he thought Nas could win a battle with Black Thought, the charismatic rapper replied with a smirk, "I don't believe him, he needs more people."

"Tracking Nas -- excuse me, Booten -- through the information superhighway was quite a task, but I was able to do it with the help of the staff at my site," noted Brian Kyle, a prominent figure at one hip-hop web site.

Nas, spotted limping away from Columbia label offices with an empty jar of Vaseline, could not be reached for comment.

either that or a club mix of her songs...
get jermain dupri etc.
remember when destiny's child had that song no no no...
then i think jermain dupri remixed it
that gets extra sales...
big time
either that or a house mix (MASTERS AT WORK, BLAZE, 95 NORTH 'THE ONES THAT PRODUCED CRYSTAL WATERS')
that will increase european sales...
fowlkes never listen to me when i tell them that a house mix can add an extra 3,000 sales...
plus it makes up for not getting as much air play once the club dj's are playing it the radio dj's are soon to follow...

That's very true bro' but very raely do house remixes equate to extra album sales, it's usually 12 in sales, which may put more money in her pockets. But I'd be very upset if she did the typical thing and did a remix with some rapper or commercial producer.

But on another note, I didn't know she didn't have a video. I don't watch MTV or BET too much these days. Taking that into account, her first week was pretty good. De La Soul had a video, and didn't even break the Top 100 their first week for Bionix.
