I totally disagree with the nomination of Levar Burton to "The Most Embarrassing Black Person Hall of Fame". True he wasn't the most masculine of characters but never has he "cooned" on the show. He was highly intelligent, the Chief of Engineering, and overcaim his disability (he was blind)to become a senior officer. So what he wasn't the "coolest or hippest" person on the show. I'm tired of shows where the brother is always the cool person who is so smooth. Why can't we be the intelligent character who has the responsibility to get the ship moving. We need to see more characters of color with this type of intelligence and responsibilities. Maybe some of the younger people out there would spend more time trying to be smart and successful instead of being cool and dumb. Not saying that you cannot be cool and smart. Personally I think that there are alot of other people that should be inducted into the Hall of Fame who deserve this (dis)honor alot more than Levar Burton. But I guess its too much to ask that we be portrayed as something more than an athlete who is to cool for his own good. Your just feeding into the perception that we are not intelligent enough to command such positions. Maybe if Levar Burton played Worf he would be an acceptable role model. You know the "BIG BLACK NEGRO" there to beat up anyone who gets in his way, who only knows how to use violence to get what he wants.

Kevin Eubanks may be lame in his sidekick role, but he's a great musician and he's got integrity.

I saw him in Milwaukee a year or two ago at a street festival gig that he most have flown out on the weekend to do (he had Marvin 'Smitty' Smith from the Tonight Show and a couple of other guys). There were lots of people there who were all, "We love you Kevin!" and knew him from the show, and proceeded to play some of the most complex, amped-up fusion and M-Base shit that I've heard. Those people probably didn't know what hit them...that got him a lot of respect from me.

My question is, why do things always have to be in such extremes with black men in Sci-Fi? Yeah, the oversexed, over-hip, hyper-violent Black male is a messed up stereotype. But I've noticed in COUNTLESS sci-fi movies, television shows, comic books , and action movies in general, that black men (when not completely absent) are more often depected as scared, emasculated, and bitch so as to not challenge the Alpha status of the lead white actor (which is why black men are also often depicted as homosexual). This relegates us to the sidekick, and more importantly, prevents us from ever competing with the white man for the females or ever taking charge of the situation (which goes right to the heart and soul of what white supremecy is all about). So yes, while Geordi IS intelligent, he's not brave, he's not strong, and he's not a leader. His intelligence is just a tool to be used by the white man in charge. The nigga computer. Fuck that bullshit. I don't want black children growing up with THAT as a role model. Jesus, no wonder so many black kids don't want to acheive in school - they're afraid they might end up like bitch-ass Geordi!! Why can't we just be normal? NORMAL! Hey man, I'm just callin' it like I see it. Geordi isn't the poster boy for societies ill's, but he's a great poster boy for all the really messed up black characters that so many white men pull out of their warped imaginations and sell to us to warp our self-image.
