"Brooklyn Babylon"

I saw it yesterday and I thought it was really good. Black Thought did a great job. The story line was predictable but interesting none the less. The Love Scene = hot, steamy, and done with class. The cinematography was hot too. Support if you haven't done so already.

Good Job!

The Roots are actors hahahaha
They need their own movie and Hub could be like ummm...hmmm...Jerome with the one-liners

Seriously, the film was cool, but I can't see this being released as a major major film. Can't put a finger on it, but I just can't see it (and not it's not because it was wack, cuz it wasn't...the ending seemed too nicely wrapped)

8. "RE: Brooklyn Babylon"
In response to Reply # 0

(I posted this in the "Reviews" section, not realizing that all of the discussion was going on over *here*)

I was at the 9:30 screening of Brooklyn Babylon last night at BAM here in Brooklyn. I'll briefly list the pros and cons (and I'll try to keep it spoiler-free by speaking in generalities, but if I slip up, don't kill me):

PROS:

* Hub = scene stealer
* Dope music throughout--the score as well as the numbers from the band
* Black Thought's performance--Common won't be adding him to his "Exceptions to 'Brothers don't know how to act'" list anytime soon; but Trotter was a lot better than I expected.
* The decision to contrast Rastafarianism and Judaism was an interesting decision that prevented "BB" from being a "Jungle Fever" retread.
* Rahzel = dope narrator
* Random cameos from all your hip-hop favorites--there hasn't been a good ol' fashioned hip-hop cameo fest since "Who's Da Man?"

CONS:

* Most of the "learning" in the core relationship was one-sided: the Jewish girl learned about hip-hop, Jah, dreds, etc. In contrast, Trotter's character didnt' seem to be too curious or inquisitive about Sarah's culture and beliefs. The movie was more about correcting misconceptions about aspects of Black culture, and didn't really attempt to do the same for Jewish culture.
* The Jewish boyfriend character was cliche and wooden--he was a walking plot device designed to create friction.
* The brewing conflict between BT and his boy/agent was never resolved.
* Sometimes the flow of the movie was choppy: it's as if I was reading a book with a page or two missing every chapter or so. Sure, I can piece things together, but it disrupts things.

Overall, it was entertaining, if a little heavy-handed. I definitely recommend it to anyone who can get the chance to see it.

At the movie's end (and if I spoil it for those who are reading this and haven't seen it - sorry), I didn't know if the two got married or something before they planted this seed for Israel...I don't know if that was to be implied...I wished the sex was implied, though...

Sara didn't look too thrilled while she was pushing that stroller...

But, all in all, it was aight...

Is this going to be one of those movies that only plays
in "art" theaters? I hate that shit, because it always
means I never get to see it until it comes out on video.
Will it play in Omaha? Probably not.

In response to Reply # 0

So what is up with the score of the film. From those who have sen it it sounds dope, but since this looks like a stragith to DVD(??) release i doubt its going to get an "official soundtrack" so can we go Black Lily live style and release it special edition through the website or something??

Come on ?uest you know you want to.........

Call MCA in Hollywood (310 865-4500) and ask for their PR people
and ask them what's up. Post their answers. i've done this a couple times under different names and such, trying to harass.....it's basically a dead issue.....

hopefully there will be a DVD feature that includes most of the score (ala Criterion's "Carnival of Souls" etc.)

if not, we definitley need a bootleg score.....

I'm the offspring of spring,
reborn pledged and sworn,
the risen edge of a flag burned and torn.
I'm the blood of the womb,
the risen tide of the moon,
the darkside that the light cannot hide.
I'm the pages of history
read between the lines,
the living truth behind your symbols and signs.
I'm the son of a minister,
love of a teacher,
my mother taught me well, so I rebel.

I didn't like it.

story line: super-duper predictable. another Romeo and Juliet rehash combined with the "trying to get on in the rap game" story. VEEEEEERY Contrived. Jewish characters were especially stereotypical. No interesting twists or turns. No character development.

The Roots: what was the point of having the Roots in the film as actors? Even ? himself poitned out that it was strange that they were performing at the West Indian Parade. Wouldnt it have been more effective to have a reggae band? That would have made a lot more sense in the cultural context of the film. It seemed like they were using them just for the name. Same with Rahzel. What was the point of having him narrate? It was very contrived. BUUUUUT...the soundtrack was dope as hell, definitely the best part of the movie.

ENDING: ugh! How many loose ends can you possibly leave!?!?!

Acting: decent but stereotypical. Black THought is defeinitely one of the better rapper/actors. that corny ass Jewish boyfriend
was horrible.

direction: pretty good, a bit confused at times, too choppy

ANyways I was crazy disappointed. Hate me now.

i liked this film in some ways
trotter was great, strong screen presence..
rahzel was fresh as the narrator..
my main qualms come on 2 levels,

1 the relationship between these groups in nyc is strained to put it lightly, so although it seems like an appropriate conflict ot have the cliche wrong side of the tracks love story, its ultimately unbelievable because it would never happen.

2. with the shit thats going down in israel, it left a bad taste in my mouth, i know tariq is a voice for the oppressed, and by doing this film, that glamorizes or tones down the racial agenda of orthodox/zionists, i felt like he sort of dropped the ball..

I liked the movie. Not a GREAT movie but entertaining. One part got to me... The dinertable discussion where Sarah's mother says something to the extent of: "we should be getting along, both our ancestors were enslaved"

I dont see how that is a reason to not hate each other. None of the people alive in that movie were enslaved. (unless you count rascism/prejudice as enslavement, in that case you would have a point almost, except that more often than not, jews are treated like whites)

and even if they were so what. I want to get along with jews and blacks too.

I was feelin' this movie, not because it was great, but it was entertaining, of course the music was hype... and damn, Karen Gobleman (who played Sarah) was blazin. Why can't all Jewish girls look like that?
