"i dont't know" bites "the root" which bites "100% dundee" which bit "war" which is a bite of "the light" which bites "can i" which bites "chicken grease" which bites "feel that way"

but if u can't get into it. hey i understand. this album is not for everybody.

just us sexy people.

--playing, this album aint for everyone. it's not a dance jawn, it's not a kill your car stereo and fuck someone up vibe. but i will say, it does something to me (first in flight, feel that way, chemical, so much more) not all hip hop needs to make you dance, or be better than "the world is yours" or dj able. i mean "feel that way"'s drums? man u would never catch me dead drumming like that! but still it works like a charm. no other drum pattern would fit but those drums. and for that i love this album enough to say i think its one of the most creative hip hop joints of 2002.

com didn't sample fela. he replayed the bassline to "water got no enemy"
for his pops to rap over. i mean, did you really expect him to say his poem over "night of the living baseheads"?

anyways, fela's catelouge is bad as fuck. if you can't feel fela then......

ok i won't finish that line.

but let a brother find himself. and if he finds himself in africa you can't get mad at that right brother? (assuming you are a fellow african)

just for the record,

Com's 'The Heat' is a great deal inspired by the first track of Tony Allen's Black Voices album. Saw him a few weeks a go with Doctor L, he still knows how to drum his bitch without spilling an inch. Did you ever try to collab with him, or did I mis it?

In response to Reply # 4

>It aint for me, but I
>hate rap anyway.

ain't for me isn't "wack", it means it ain't for you. to me, your subject header sounded like a "dis"-claimer telling other people they would be "dis"-appointed by the joint (i.e., a dis). If you "hate rap" and are only waiting for Com and The Roots, do the rest of us a favor and don't review albums in a genre you mostly hate anyway...

ps: My Blackalicious bias ought to be shining through quite clearly, but the above points go for any genre...I don't want to see posts "Rock Band X, Kinda Whack" from someone who hates all rock except Pearl Jam...it might steer impressionable people away from an otherwise good record...for whatever reason, most people are more likely to remember a negative opinion (wack) than a positive one (dope).

now that joint has alot of potential.

Speaking of which, did u hear how gil scot heron sounded on it?

he didn't sound too good. I heard he recently hit rock bottom with substance abuse problems.

Either way, that was cool to showcase him on the track.

In response to Reply # 11

You know when celebrities crash and/or burn, usually it's because of some hidden issue that's been magnified because of their status?

Well a friend of mine gave a really good theory as to why someone like gil scott heron has seemed to fall on hard times.

She was saying how people like gil scott who are passionate and very aware of the ill's of society and the world takes alot of things to heart.
Just looking back at the catalogue he's released and his infamous performances, you can see his insight.

She just stated, when you try to be pro-active and have an impact on people, then time continues on and things pretty much still stay the same, it may be very discouraging to people and they may lose hope...even someone like a gil scott heron.
Probably more so someone like him, too much deep thinking may have turned to depression, which turns to release and escape (artificial escape or not).

I admire gil scot for what he's done. I hope he has someone who can help him in his time of need. We're not all supermen in this life.

true dat. caring about the world too much can get you way down. Not that my activist career has been as extensive as Gil Scott Heron's, but I remember I hit rock bottom when I had spent months organizing a speaking event for Noble Obani Nwibari, a Nigerian refugee and v.p. of the Movement for the survival of the Ogoni people. This was the Shell Oil thing for those who remember a few years ago. I had flyered the hell out of campus, gotten press releases, local newspaper articles, word of mouth, etc. 50 people showed up. that's it. A week later some stupid ass comedian or somebody like that came and everybody and their mother went. That was rough. I started to see why all my seasoned activist friends were nearly alcoholics. It's hard not takin it personally. People are so apathetic and self absorbed it makes you want to scream sometimes......patience, patience, patience

good try.

i'm nobody's bodyguard.
i didn't take it personal.
that would be silly.

i could care less if buddy had a problem with your rebut.
i did.
if someone posts their dislikes about an artist you've collaborated with, you usually respond with an assumption that they "aren't ready yet" or go to comparative extremes to justify why the artist in question is dope, and i pointed that out. i didn't go on a mad "let's lynch ?uest" rampage, and you're jumping the gun to assume that i'm trying to start shit. please.

naw, what i'm saying is ?uest is ridiculous with making excuses for artists he's collaborated with but it he hasn't effed with 'em yet, they get the gavel and book thrown @ them. i mean, this is the guy who said Pete Rock was disposable and JayDee was the illest hip-hop producer ever. i just think dude gets carried away. someone posted about not liking the singing in "Thought At Work"... ?uest responded "there's nothing wrong with Tariq's singing...". and the fallback response to someone not liking okaymaterial is usually "well, you're not ready yet, blahblah".

My original response was made before i got to listen to "Blazing Arrows", and i stopped after half of it. man, was i disappointed. I'd already heard "Make You Feel That Way", "Chemical Calistenics" and "Release", and was hyped. But, Man, the joints with Jurassic 5, Keke Wyatt, and Jaguar SUCKED! why were there so many collabs, Gab is ill in his own right, and works better alone. "First In Flight" was an extremely redeeming moment in the lp, though. it was just insane hearing Gil-Scott and Gift of Gab on the same song. damn.

but this is supposed to be one of the most original joints of the year? come on, man, the same week MF Grimm dropped, which i can't WAIT to get after hearing "Break Em Off" and "Words". now THAT's some next shit.

i'm just sick of listening to boring hip-hop because it's supposed to be smart music or something. where's the adrenaline? tempos, people, TEMPOS!!@!!

whatever.

hankathon 2002 wants you.

I feel you, I have heard the whole album,(and since given it away)it's a departure from Nia, I can see what you're saying about everything from the Okayplayer (yeah, yeah, only featured artists...so what)camp is starting to sound like one long album, and this is no different. It's like they lost their b-boy intensity, and replaced it with joints with Gil Scott Heron, and Jaguar. Now I won't say that's totally wack, but in my opinion Gift Of Gab does not have a well enough defined rep as a lyricist yet to take the backseat to other performers-and ultimately get OUTSHINED!!! Can any verse of Gift's fuck with the shit Saul Williams dropped on Release, hell no. But anyway, I'm on a tangent, it's just a bit dissapointing, that everytime an artist gets with the Roots crew their sound is normally sacrificed, if you don't beleive me, just experience the softer side of Common on LWFC-which had to grow on me cause it just sounded like The Roots featuring the artist formally known as Com Sense.

so tired of so called purists calling the game like they holding the holy grail manual

aside from sounding quite drunk, this aint no straight outta compton.

"hey x, in order to be down with us thou must embrace fallen 70's vet!!!"
-conversation btween me and x according to a purist.

dude my only connection to this record is one song (one hell of a song at that) and an introduction to x's new life partner in engineering, russ elevado. i didn't even know them in the nia period and they were doing stuff on this level (mad singsongy shits, poems, etc) so for you to assume they came down the assembly line of ?uest and came out soft sounds

tired to me.

first of all i don't see any of the similarities people are mentioning. second artists grow, and their sounds change (from the laid back jazzy DYWM to the electronicaish tao....)

but if a group or artist wants to work with the soulQ's or ?uest isn't it because he likes their sound and wants to incorporate it into their own art?

seems pretty stupid to criticize blackalicious, common, or any-one else for this..... it's the whole point of collaboration.

first of all, Gab and Chief sold 100,000 copies of "nia", so his rep as a lyricist is well established for those in the know. And As far as saying Quest influenced the album, how so when Xcel did the vast majority (if not all) of th production. it's not like Soulquarians did the boardwork. In fact, I thought Quest only drummed on one joint. What are you talking about?

Blazing Arrow sounds like a conscience rap album cliche, from the lyrics to the beats, at least it is not as bad as the Jaquar Wright album.

what is a "conscious rap album cliche"? "nation of millions" sounds nothing like "one for all" sounds nothing like "black on both sides" sounds nothing like "train of thought". So, honestly, did you think before you typed that at all?

which conscious rap album has a song running through the entire periodic chart? or anything close? lol.

which lyricist does Gab mirror? Honestly. Where's the lyricist that writes just like Gab who he's biting his style from? Whose production style is Chief Xcel allegedly mirroring? You're absolutely bugging.

To me, you're just thinking of random keys to hit on your keyboard and pressing enter. Where's the critical analysis?

Believe me, i love Gift of Gab's body of work, but there have been times when he's swiped Mikah's delivery, at least once on each of their projects.

I love Mikah and Gift.

I have listened to them both extensively.

Mikah clearly has had a massive influence on much of the West Coast underground (AND I have a theory about his influence on the East Coast underground as well, but that's another post).

In any case, I have Mikah's solo album, all three Fellowship albums, and I have Gab's two EPs (Melodica and the A to G EP) and his LP (Nia). If you listen to all this material, you can see that Gab stands on his own two feet as a distinct artist.

Further, the original poster stated that the Blackalicious album is a "conscious album cliche". Mikah is not popularly referred to as a "conscious rapper". In fact, quite a few of Mikah's lyrics are by turns quite violent or misogynist (particularly on the 'Temptations' album) and with the exception of songs like 'Five O'Clock Follies' or 'Tolerate', Mikah doesn't really engage in much social commentary (we can debate this at length, believe me). Mikah is primarily an abstract rhymer and a battle rhymer.

That said, I should have qualified my comments to say "What CONSCIOUS rapper is Gab mirroring (to justify stating that "Blazing Arrow" is a conscious album cliche, because to be a cliche, one must be clearly following in well-treaded footsteps)".

Mikah 9, in my opinion, even if he was somehow considered a "conscious rapper", is far from a "cliched conscious rapper".

Perhaps that insult might be levied against someone like dead prez, who more clearly follows the conscious rap tradition than mikah or blackalicious, but I don't think it applies here at all.

Is my point clearer now?

ps: I thank you for the opportunity to expose a few more people to Mikah 9, even inadvertantly.

In response to Reply # 63

I forgot to directly admit my opinion on that. Yes, I think Mikah influenced Gab. I would never argue that point.

Much like Rakim and G. Rap influenced Nas.

Clearly, both artists have grown beyond their influences.

In retrospect, Mikah may be considered conscious if only because of his decision to avoid making gangsta records when that was the only thing expected from people with his geographical background (Watts, specifically The Jungles).

When conscious rappers are listed though, Mikah is never mentioned, probably due to his relative lack of solo material. Whether this is an oversight or a justifiable decision is debatable. He does seem to have few songs which could be dubbed "conscious" in nature. 'Five O'Clock Follies' might qualify. My memory is poor, however, and there is probably a track I am forgetting.

ps: Wow. This is the most I've gotten to post about Mikah since I came to okayplayer. LOL.

i think you're being a bit narrow with your "conscious" category. a lot of folks think "conscious" mc's talk about positivity all the time and are usually about revolution and things like that. but consider the term literally, and Mikah's one of the most conscious cats out there, meaning he's conscious of his reality. the reason more cats can relate to Nas than Mos and Kweli is Mos and Kwa usually talk about the uplifting side of things while Nas speaks on upliftment AND tragedy (as well as the projects, Africa, hoes, weed, etc, - but that's another post...)

There aren't too many so-called conscious mc's who've written songs as dense and intense as "Park Bench People", "Seventh Seal" or "Life Or Death".

and he's NOT BORING.

but as a hip hop fan that has gotten real sick of boring music and repetitive flows/lyrics, (not to mention boring samples)
Blazing Arrow is refreshing to say the least.

Say what you want about it being wack, but the production is beautiful to me...it's not overdone...it's not off the chain or about to make me jump out the window, but it's the perfect album for a sunday afternoon. sounds like they're growing and i like it.

as for everybody in the camp sounding the same, i don't think folks are listening close enough cuz that's just a dumb statement. if you can't back it up, why put it out there?

I think I might have asked you this before. In fact, I *know* I have. You have two Kool Kieth quotes in your signature, but on several occasions I've seen you dis rappers who are influenced by the abstract style Kieth pioneered. I just don't see how you could be a Kool Kieth fan and find Blackalicious "unlistenable". Could you maybe be more specific about your criticism of Blackalicious?

Here is where you might see my point of view... As I said, Gift is a highly skilled MC I cannot doubt that. I just dont like the output and the overall sound of it although there are some good things going on. Kool Keith I kind of feel the same way about... he is not on my fav MC list, there isnt a Kool Keith album I would put in my fav albums list. When all is said and done, Kool Keith is wack... but again you cant deny his talent. And some of the completely original and obscure (yet brilliant) things he says from time to time interest me enough to sit thru a Kool Keith album and hear it out... (how ever painfull that is).

In response to Reply # 0

Well I do think most of the Okayplayer records compliment each other (which is more of a good thing) but I wouldn't say they all sound alike.

Now if Black Thought were on EVERY Comm album.. who was on EVERY Roots album, who was on EVERY Dilated album.. who was on EVERY Jazzys album.. and they all had the exact same song content and musical style... they I would agree.

Compare "The Light" to "The Blast".. two tight OKP joints.. but they're nothing alike. "Untitled" to "Worst Comes To Worst" even more different. "The Way" to "Dynamite!" ...I think you get the point.

I think the OKP sound is more of a musical, and personal maturity that usually isnt appreciated by most purist Hip Hop cats.

(Excuse me if I just repeated everyting some of you already said).

Regarding Blackalicious.. I'm sure the album is tight.. but I have a feeling its gonna be way different than that BBoy-Premo-Gangstarresque-East Coast Hip Hop. That's not always a bad thing though.

What keeps this genre alive is the fact that MCs can't take the music in a new (and totally different) direction. Even a direction that people may not initially feel.

I'm gonna cop "Blazing Arrow" 1) cause I like "Make you feel that way". It's different than most joints I've heard before, but I still feel it. 2) Because I've decided to support Hip Hop this year by buying all the "real" joints that come out...even if they aren't classic.

Peace and Love

that's bullshit. entire bullshit.

what if i take a chance with an album, and decide for myself that it's not fresh? if it's an okayrelease, then i need go to extra lengths to back up why i think it's not good? who are you, the walking hip-hop atlas or something?

elitism is for suckers.

what if dude who made the original post freed his mind already?
did you think of that?

there's two kinds of hip-hop. good and bad.

if it's good, you head will nod, body will move, mind will be stimulated, etc.
if it's bad, you'll turn that shit off.
it should be that simple.

anyway..........

Im glad I didnt listen to it via audiogalaxy because if I did I wouldnt have purchased it based upon my first listen. I've come to the conclusion with the release of this lp that okayplayers will hype an lp like its the greatest thing ever if it is promoted via this website. (scared to say when shit is wack out of fear of being called a hater imagine that). Everyone who heard this album beforehand swore it held candidacy for the best hip-hop album of the year etc.

the songs I liked

nowhere fast - I paid 7.99 for this at Best Buy, this song alone is worth about 4 or 5 dollars, thats what soulful hip-hop is about, glad to see the aoulquarians still have it (jokes)

chemical calisthenics- you cant help but like this song based upon the sheer creativity

passion- this song has the energy most of the rest of the lp lacks

release parts 1 and 2 - just something you have to experience on your own

thats 4 tracks out of 17, I feel while Gab's flow is extraordinary time after time, there is little life in the rest of these tracks.

Im about to run errands in a few I'll take this cd with me again and digest it a 2nd time. Duck Season impressed me a lot based on 1 listen yesterday. Creativity doesnt always equal good music, if Kobe comes up the court dribbling with the illest technique but cant execute what good is he?

the last outstanding okayplayer album was expansion team

don't bother. usually i agree with atruhead on most shit, but i gotta say i really wasn't feeling it too much. some of their beats are really dope, but i just can't really get with the mc's. if you like them though then you'd prob like expansion team...
as for balzing arrow, i haven't heard it yet. but i wasn't really feeling nia all that much anyway. as someone else just said, creativity alone doesn't always deliver...

after listening to it again I feel exactly the same. gift of gab's flow is the obvious star of the show. nowhere fast is the gem of the album, chemical calisthenics still gets points for creativity, passion and release parts 1 and 2 are still cool.

but besides that I cant f with this album. if I wanted to hear sweetback's attempt at hip-hop thats what I would buy.

this album lacks everything that hip-hop is supposed to be comprised of: edge, grit, maybe a curse or 2, rebellion just to name a few elements.

i could play this album while helping set up a family barbecue and get 0 objection from 30-50 year old relatives.

its way too friendly. if i needed the dough bad enough i would head back to best buy with my receipt or at least get some store credit

ouch.

if you werent feeling nia, then i dont understand why you bought this album.

if you've been a fan of blackalicious through melodica to a2g to nia to all the shit they've putting down on solesides and quannum, then it the 'peaceful' vibe of this album would not have been a shock to you at all. this album is just an extension of what blackalicious has been doing from day one.

i don't know, i understand what you are sayin bout the grit edge and curses...well, no, i guess i don't...without a doubt that is where hip hop came from, but now it's reached people who might not have the grittiest stuff to rap about, and they aren't gonna rap about something that isn't real to them...i dont' know, i think there can be happy hip hop as well, it might be a west coast thing, but i dig the fresh pleasant sound every once in awhile. don't take this as me not sayin that you can't dislike "blazing arrow" cuz i mean, clearly you do dislike it, but i just think your last point about why you don't might be a lil off base

is perhaps taking things in a new direction. I liked what I heard from saul's amethyst rock star lp, thats showing experimentation yet with grit.

i accept blackalicious for the artists that they are but very little of this album gets me open or excites me and thats what I look for in hip-hop. maybe thats not what they look to accomplish with their music

but im no one to label what hip-hop should sound like, blazing arrow just isnt what I was raised on though.

gift of gab's flow cant be denied though, i think i could like this album more if I stopped paying so much attention to the fact that I find most of the music backing the lyrics to be dull and repetitive.

Yeah...not completely trash...but he aint fuckin with gab....and rakka aint either.

I don't know how you don't like Feel that way.
But regardless...this album is in line with what Blackalicious has been doing. They have been musical (outside of the traditional hip hop paradigm) and experimental since A2G (i haven't heard Melodica).

Still if you don't like...I can see why, it aint for everybody.
Especially if you really do think that Expansion Team is an example of an Outstanding album...rap or otherwise.

The cd is refreshing. I don't think every song on there is good, but there are alot of great tracks. Gab is a bad emcee w/ styles unlike any other.
This was a great pickup for $7.99, would have been just as great for $18.99

i'm glad somebody has the balls to express a dissonanat opinion once in a while. ppl seem mad quick to condemn somebody for not jumping on the bandwagon. everybody's entitled to their opinion...as much as the "conscious" hip-hop head in me would like to dog somebody for listening to DMX or something, I'm not gonna sit here and pretend I like EVERYTHING that Common, Dilated, or another OKP puts out. Some stuff is just plain corny and people have the right to that opinion.
