Gavin Woods was making an important statement will resonate with most people at home, especially Black SA folk. There are two kinds of white South Africans i.e. the disillusioned and bitter kind struggling to come to terms with the new SA and the kind that has embraced the new SA. Whereas Coetzee won the Nobel Prize in Literature for writing books that describe and sympathize with the psychology of the former, Gavin Woods's triumph is a triumph for the latter, for the movie as a whole and for SA. It would make mores ense if one had watched the movie in advance.

BTW Tsotsi continues to sell out movie theatres in SA as we speak.

Im as northerner snob as the next New Yorker, but alot of 'us' come from that. There's no difference between 3 6, and Johnny Cash talking about shooting people in his songs...they are both rural, southerners that when people move from there look down upon since they are hicks(of the white or black kind)

On the other part, you can't judge everything through whitey's eyes. Like I said before, with all the other well spoken, polite, negros(freeman, foxx, latifa, etc) that popped on the Oscar screens today, if someone at home takes 36 as representative for all black people as a whole...their problems were in place way before that.

but I also understand that there is a bit of a patronizing air surrounding the recent trend in the Academy towards giving awards to black folks in recent years

I think the politics behind what roles/subject matter gets the awards canont be overlooked

Even if someone doesn't like Three-Six's style of music, it doesn't take away from their effort and they don't reflect all black people, so there's no reason to be ashamed.
