In response to Reply # 13

My point?

get informed...you'd be surprised man
You might find out that there are normal muslims
but obviously you've decided that you're not ready to accept that
the actions of a few don't reflect the nature of:

1. a religion
2. a group of people
3. a country

that is a matter of common sense.

the issue is more complex than what you think
you don't have to search too far for more info
there's a post right here, in this forum adressing the issue
if that's not enough for you, again:
1. read the news
2. read a book
3. use some logic

it's extremely simple

nobody says, excuse me, when you say death to america, u should really consider that not everone in america backs the war in ____

like shut the fuck up, u know what i meant,
if you wanna support killing people over a parody of a religion, be my guest...

dont get on my case for denouncing it for little more than savagry excused in the name of religion,,

people get on christians backs all the time about all the people they killed in christs name,

well muslims, oh sorry "facist muslims who are extremist & exercise terrorist methods" are rapidly trying to break christianity's record,

it's all bullshit,
killing in the name of religion is bullshit
i dont care how holy u think your religion is,

and i didnt backtrack anything... i still stand by it.
its savage to kill someone over a parody cartoon.

when i said muslims are idiotic, perhaps i should have specified facist muslims or muslim terrorists for political correctness to prevent this sort of debacle, but seeing as the context of who i was refering my initial comment towards, i assumed people would gather thats who i was also speaking about as idiotic...

but not you, ironically, a muslim yourself, who wants to start splitting hairs about semantics & context...

unless you are a muslim terrorist/facist/extremist or supporter of killing someone over a cartoon parody of muhammed, then u need not be offended by my comment(s).

but im sure you will find a way to be anyway.

the acts of one or two jabronis does not the whole population make.

Those Muslims who killed over that PB&J...are on that Toast & Nutella, but the blanket statement is kind of PB&J too.

BTW, The Doc doesn't believe the Muslims are above being ridiculed but generally, it's good practice not to shit on another's religion like that, even if you don't believe in it (or anything for that matter). Especially now, The Doc would sorta chill on doing things to piss them off.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

I know what you mean, and that you mean well even, but I still don't know if this is the best solution, AT ALL. In fact I sometimes wonder if it might be better to publish MORE "blasphemous" cartoons. Lots more. Make them into pamphlets and drop them from bombers, even.

and Muslims.

Muslims are people, therefore they are fallible. They become angered, they are passionate, they can also be wrong. Islam isn't people. Whether you agree with my faith or not, that doesn't matter to me, but do not mistake the actions of Muslims as being Islam.

Muslims are no more Islam than Christians are Christianity. Are they a reflection of their respective faiths, yes they are, but the more informed you are, the more capable you are of making that distinction between the two. This is why people are telling you to read.

Do I believe that anyone should have died or anyone should be killed over this? No. But I do believe they had every right to protest. I don't think anyone has the right to chactureise the figurehead of a religion. The artists and paper knew what was going to happen when that cartoon ran. While not all Christians may have a deep love for Jesus, Muslims have a deep love for Muhammed (SAW), the editors knew this.

But hey, anti-islamic rhetoric is the in thing, so do what you like.

I disagree strongly. If this were the case Mohammed (pbuh) himself could be considered guilty since he certainly put his own spin on the judeo-christian prophets (including the "prophet" many believe was much more, christ).

For all you know these cartoonists are the real messiahs and messengers among you, although we shouldn't really go there as it's too abstract.

Basically though, I find the statement you made troubling and indicative of the unliberal bent many muslims have. Make no mistake, I am NOT anti-muslim. I think I just have a problem with how the religion's popular interpretation (possibly because of the culture/politics of the religion's spiritual homebase countries) does not seem to have moderated like christianity/judaism.

>One day u all kumbaya n shit, the next day u a fascist.

Come on man, you're better than to call me a fascist...look, I'm just me...I dont fall into a box...I am constantly weighing things(that's the Libra in me), always trying to get a better perspective and viewpoint on shit..
and because of that, I cannot agree with people not providing a link to a cartoon in fear that it will insult someone else...All I said there was that if someone wants to get perspective on this incident, why should they fear reprisal? Why should those who know they are going to be offended just simply *not* click the link?

I wasnt attacking you

My outlook on this whole situation has been changing over the past few days...I understand now that it is more than "just a comic", whereas before reading all of the diologue on the boards and various other places on the net and on TV, I didnt understand why people wanted to burn shit down...

I'm always lookin to be enlightened man...But that doesnt mean that I am not going to condemn those who are refusing to condemn or are trying to justify the violent reactions to this situation..

that everytime somebody brings up the brutal killings of folks @ the hands of insane muslims in the middle east they say one of 2 things

A) "bush is killing thousands" (which is a lie)

or

B) "you christians killed millions during the crusades some Xthousands of years ago!!"

both are telling in that you ACKNOWLEDGE INDIRECTLY that yes, muslims are indeed killing folks for no reason and in the name of their religion which is wrong, but I dont have the courage to say so, I will just point out where YOU were/are wrong to soften the blow...killing somebody over a fuckin' cartoon is lunacy. but its like my mother said, these muthafuckas just wanna kill something and always do, they are using this cartoon as an excuse...

No seriously, I think people kinda wildly misunderstood where I was coming from in some cases. Hate speech? Haha, no more than when I poke a little fun at some of the Christians on this board.

I am kinda glad people are talking about it, even if it's mostly accusatory slander going back and forth. Or rather, I should say that, even though people ascribed a hatred for Islam that wasn't really present in my original post, that they are taking up the defense of Islam rather than joining the perceived hate.

My basic point is that I find extremism to be morally remiss in any manifestation, be it Islam, Christianity, nationalism, etc. I do find it interesting that I've yet to hear a Muslim denounce the violence that's taken place over a cartoon.

We live in a twisted world, where right is wrong and wrong reigns supreme. It is a chilling fact that most of the world's leaders believe in nonsensical fairytales about the nature of reality. They believe in Gods that do not exist, and religions that could not possibly be true. We are driven to war after war, violence on top of violence to appease madmen who believe in gory mythologies.
These men are called Christians, Muslims and Jews.

Osama bin Laden is insane. He believes God whispered in the ear of Mohammed 1,400 years ago about how he should conquer Arabia. Mohammed was a pure charlatan -- and a good one at that. He makes present religious frauds like Pat Robertson look like amateurs.

He said God told him to have sex with as many of the women he met as possible. I'm sorry, I meant to say "take them as wives." God told him to kill all other tribes that stood in his way or that would not placate him with assurances of loyalty or bribes. God told him, conveniently, that everyone should follow him and never question a word he said.

He sold this bag of goods to the blithering idiots who lived in the Arabian Peninsula at the time. If that weren't shockingly stupid enough, over a billion people continue to believe the convenient lies that Mohammed told all that time ago -- to this very day.

We live in a world full of insane people. Sanity is an island battered in an ocean of frothing delusion. The people who believe in science are the minority. The people who believe in bloody fairytales are the overwhelming majority.

George W. Bush is the most powerful man alive. He is a class A imbecile. He is far less intelligent than the average Christian. But like most of the others, he believes Jesus died for his sins. That idea is so perverse and devoid of logic it should shock the conscience. Instead, it gets him elected, and earns him the reverence of a great percentage of America. America! The most advanced country in the world -- run by a bunch of villagers who still believe Santa Claus is going to save them.

There is no damn Easter Bunny. There is no Jesus waiting to return. Moses never even existed. These were all convenient lies from the men of those times to gain power. Their actions were rational -- they wanted to deceive their brethren so that they could amass power. I get their motivations. But I cannot, for the life of me, understand our motivations, thousands of years later, still following the conmen of yesteryear into our gory, bloody, violent end.

Jesus is said to have said on the cross, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" Because Jesus was insane and the God he thought would rescue him did not exist. And he died on that cross like a fool. He fancied himself the son of God and he could barely convince twelve men to follow him at a time when the world was full of superstition.

Excellent marketing by some of his followers would later rescue his botched effort. How many people saw his miracles? One? Twelve? Eighty? Why didn't he show the whole world? Not because this is some giant pop quiz by God to test us -- but because he did not perform any miracles!

Even his apostles can't agree on what miracles he supposedly carried out or when he carried them out. Or whether he returned after death or he didn't. Whether they saw him in person or just as a vision. Rational human beings shouldn't believe this kind of nonsense. Yet most of the world does.

If a man today killed his only son to show how much he loved other people, he would be considered a madman, locked in jail and earn society's contempt. Yet we think this is some sort of noble act by our Father in Heaven.

In Heaven? What, with the harps and the winged angels and the 72 virgins? My God, how stupid do you have to be to believe that?

I know most of you don't actually read your religious texts, and when you do, you assiduously try to avoid the parts that make no sense whatsoever or hide underneath the comforting grasp of your religious leaders who have concocted a bunch of circular logic (a crime to even use that word in regards to Christianity, Islam or Judaism) to shield you from the obvious folly of the written text.

So, I'm not calling you stupid if you haven't really read the material. And I know how powerful brainwashing is. We all received it when we were young and it is exceedingly difficult to break its grasp. But people dance around the issue out of politeness because they don't want to call you what you are -- ignorant.

There are a lot of people I love dearly and respect wholeheartedly who believe in religion. I hate to do this to them. But we have killed far too many people, wasted far too much time on this nonsense for us to keep going in this direction for fear of offense.

Jesus was a lunatic. God is not coming to your rescue. He hasn't come to anyone's rescue in thousands of years, including Jesus. Mohammed was a power hungry, scam artist and ruthless conqueror. Moses and Abraham were figments of the imagination of some long dead rabbi. He would probably laugh his ass off at all of you who still believe the fairytales he made up thousands of years ago. He probably wouldn't even believe it if you told him.

Did I mention Judaism? The chosen people? Come on, get off it. People walk around in clothes from 18th century Russia, thinking they have been chosen by God when they look like a bunch of jackasses. I'm tired of all the deaths because we did not want to give offense. Orthodox Jews are wrong and ridiculous.

As are the orthodox and fundamentalists of all of the religions. It says in the Bible that it is an abomination to wear clothes made of two different cloths or to eat shellfish. If you think God will hate you because you mixed wool and linen or because you ate some shrimp, you are insane.

How long are we going to dance around the 800-pound gorilla in the room? The world is run by madmen. It's not just Bush and bin Laden. It is the leader of all of the countries in the Middle East, almost all of the Americas and most of the rest of the world.

Have I offended you? That's too bad. Stop killing each other in the name of false and ridiculous Gods and I will stop ridiculing you. Trust me, your offense is much worse than mine.

Right now as you read this, there are ignorant, hateful Muslims teaching other ignorant Muslims how to put on a suicide belt. There are orthodox Jews telling other Jews how they must never leave their "holy land" no matter what the consequences are to other human beings. They assure their followers -- remember, they are not the chosen ones, we are. If we crush and oppress them, don't worry, God will excuse it, and even desires it, because He is on our side.

There are maniacal Christians who are praying for the end of time. Who are hoping that most of the world's population is wiped off the face of the Earth by their vengeful and murderous God. Whom they believe is, ironically, a loving God. Unless, of course, you make the fatal mistake of not kissing his ass and appeasing him, in which case he will slaughter you and condemn you to eternal torture. What kind of sick people believe this?

The kind who live next to you. The kind who voted for George Bush. The kind who send their religious leaders to the White House to argue against even-handedness in the Middle East because it would prevent their sick prophecy. The kind who have undue influence over how we use the greatest and most lethal army ever built by man.

If you don't want to be called ignorant or misinformed, then get informed. Learn the real nature of our universe and put aside old wives tales about resurrected Gods, omniscient prophets and a guy who could split the Red Sea but couldn't find where he's going in the desert for forty years.

It's the year 2005. Let's start acting like it.

...eh... i think it applies...

...i mean... some muslims are torching embassies, rioting, and protesting over a cartoon... over. a. fucking. cartoon.

...they're insane. they've got the notion that some guy came out of the desert and talked to an angel... or god... or whatever the fuck muhammad hallucinated... and they're upset and burning shit over a fucking cartoon...

(this is, of course, not taking into account the possible syrian influence... but 'tevers...)

...if you're gonna burn shit down because of a goddamned cartoon that insults your favorite fairy tale... shit... i dunno...

Naturally you'll be coming from a different center from a practicing Muslim, any practicing Muslim.

I'm willing to bet that many, most, or all (truly) dedicated believers would gladly give their lives for Alláh, just as would I, and they take the purposeful shitting on what they have dedicated their lives to quite seriously.

Would all Muslims riot over the depiction? No, and the vast majority have not and will not. Speak against, demonstrate (peacefully) against, very possibly, but there are no more fanatical Muslims than there are fanatical Christians, Jews, Hindus, Scientologists, etc. Really, proportionally fewer than most.

Obviously the death that's occurred is tragic and wrong and his choosing to riot and fire on the cops extremely irresponsible, but at least credit is due his willingness to act on his beliefs.

There's no real way to communicate that properly to someone who is disinterested in the involved beliefs, but if there's anything you yourself feel is worthy of giving your life for, it may be worth a shot trying to translate it over.

...i mean, there are things i would protest, i suppose... maybe... (though i'm of the opinion that protesting does dick-all most times...)

...but burn down a diplomatic building? over a cartoon? nope. not a fucking chance. muslims weren't ~harmed~ by the cartoon... their sensibilities were insulted... whoop de fucking doo...

...there are people in the west that advocate for the violent subjugation of the entire middle east... this fucking fiasco will only give them more ammunition...

...i'm all for having beliefs you're willing to fight and die for... but wanting to fight/die over something some european cartoonist drew just strikes me as the height of stupidity, no matter what it was about...

"credit is due for his willingness to act on his beliefs"? wtf? credit is due where a fanatical fantasy motivates someone toward violence? fuck that...

...likely just a misunderstanding there... perhaps you're separating his act from his willingness to act... yes, the willingness to act may be admirable... but i find the act in and of itself deplorable...

I think the riots are pretty damn tragic, and the cat bringing heat for the po-lice did about the dumbest thing he could.

But if he'd directed that energy to more productive means, I mean, that's the equivalent of real activist spirit in the 'states, which, even with grassroots campaigners etc. gets intrusive, is still better IMO than the apathy that's consumed most of the country, or the fear of standing up for principles which is all too common.

I do suspect we're more in agreement than we realize, at least in respect to the uselessness of the acts that have taken place themselves.

no muslim on this site has YET to say whether they PERSONALLY agree with innocent peop- oh my bad, a person drawing up a cartoon isnt "innocent"...but when these folks kill people by beheading, torture, or kill folks over a cartoon - there hasnt been a single muslim on this site to condemn these acts - EVER.

and no, saying "dont generalize us all" isn't saying "I, MYSELF, DO NOT AGREE WITH"...cut the bullshit folks - it wont be hard to find a christian who condemns the act of molesting a child, having an abortion, homosexuals in the church etc etc...you simply agree with an act or you do not. period.

the bottom line is that somebody is dead over a cartoon and the killers make NO SECRET about the fact that the murder was in the name of islam...now, you can use your COMMON sense and add 2 and 2 together, or you can keep listening to these smokescreening spin artists...

Afgani peoples, while the majority of them are adherents of Islam, are not Arabs. So the killing in this case doesn't have anything to do with Arabs, per se. Perhaps you were speaking more generally, but just a little tidbit of information regarding this particular issue.

(CNN) -- From Afghanistan to Indonesia, tens of thousands of Muslims around the world have launched a series of new protests -- some violent -- over cartoons depicting Prophet Mohammed.

Provincial authorities in Lagman, Afghanistan, said one protester died in a protest there after clashes broke out between demonstrators and police.

Separately, protesters demonstrated outside Bagram Airbase, a U.S. base north of Kabul. U.S. military officials said between 100 and 150 protesters demonstrated peacefully. But an Associated Press journalist on the scene said he witnessed a clash between Afghan police and protesters at the gate in which two civilians were killed.

And in the east African nation of Somalia, police fired in the air Monday to disperse stone-throwing protesters, triggering a stampede in which a teenager died, according to The Associated Press. (Full story)

In Indonesia, video from a demonstration outside a U.S. consulate showed a protester with a bloody shirt sitting on the ground next to police.

The new wave of protests came as Lebanon apologized to Denmark for a protest Sunday in which the building housing the Danish Consulate was torched. The protest was planned in advance and well publicized, but Lebanese security still took hours to bring it under control.

Officials on the scene Monday found that the consulate had reinforced its doors, so the rioters had not managed to destroy the consulate itself, which was on the fourth floor of the 10-story building.

Other protests Monday took place in Amman, Tel Aviv, Gaza, and Kut, a city in southern Iraq where about 5,000 people congregated, burned flags and burned an effigy of the Danish prime minister.

In Tehran, demonstrators protested outside the Danish Consulate and the Austrian Embassy. Austria is currently serving as president of the European Union. Reuters reported that about 200 people threw fire bombs and rocks. (Full story)

In Indian-controlled Kashmir, schools and businesses closed in protest over the drawings. Some demonstrators set flags on fire and threw rocks at passing cars. And in the Indian capital of New Delhi, police fired tear gas and water canons to try to break up one protest.

The controversy began in September, when 12 drawings of the Muslim prophet were published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. The paper said it had asked cartoonists to draw the pictures because the media was censoring itself over Muslim issues.

Islam forbids depictions of Mohammed but many Muslims were also furious at the drawings themselves. One of them showed the religious figure wearing a turban shaped like a bomb with a lit fuse.

In January, a Norwegian newspaper reprinted the drawings.

Some other European papers later published some of the cartoons, as a way of covering the controversy and also, some papers said, as a matter of freedom of expression.

Two small weekly Jordanian newspapers recently reprinted the cartoons and, according to Jordan's Petra News Agency, arrest warrants were issued for the editors-in-chief of those papers.

World leaders and some Muslim religious officials have called on members of the faith to use only peaceful forms of protest.

Over the weekend, protesters torched embassies of Denmark and Norway in Damascus and the Danish Consulate in Beirut. No staff were hurt, but buildings were damaged or destroyed.

The protests in Beirut soon escalated into fighting between Muslims and Christians. (Watch as protesters battle security forces in Lebanon -- 2:08)

Iraq's transport ministry also said it was severing ties with the Danish and Norwegian governments, a move that includes terminating all contracts with companies based in those countries.

Meanwhile, London police were under pressure to arrest Muslim protesters who carried signs threatening death and terrorist attacks at a demonstration over the cartoons on Friday. (Full story)

The Danish government has tried to get out the message that it does not control what is in newspapers and that Danish courts will determine whether the newspaper that originally published the cartoons, Jyllands-Posten, is guilty of blasphemy. The government has also expressed apologies for the offending drawings. (Danes feel threatened)

Jyllands-Posten has apologized, saying it did not mean to offend Muslims and that the drawings had to be understood in their original contexts. T

he paper's cultural editor, Flemming Rose, said the uproar came after "radical imams from Denmark traveled to the Middle East, deliberately lying about these cartoons," and saying that the paper is owned by the government and is preparing a new translation of the Koran "censoring the word of 'Allah,' which is a grave sin according to Islam."

CNN has chosen to not show the cartoons out of respect for Islam.

if a muslim country printed up some anti-christian cartoons, and christians all over this country went around destroying every 7-11 and islamic landmark or mosque we saw out of anger, even killing people, OVER SOME CARTOONS - the whole first page of GD would be filled with posts over it...not to mention every news media outlet would be talking about it and would be outraged...

yall are just full of shit and hate to have to deal with it.

thats a negative no one's oppressed here...and my aunt says the same

I'll make sure to ask my mother inlaw in the morning too....I dont think she's oppressed though....oh what the hell..I'll ask my sister inlaws too while I'm at it....

so I'm not sure what I'm condemning if there's nothing to condemn..

It's over the mockery of something people hold dearer than their own lives, something the publishers KNEW believers held dear.

People talk about Islam like "just a religion", etc. but it's not. It's not like Christianity, where so many believers are happy to only practice one day a week. It's a whole way of life, even for American practitioners. People's entire way of life was stomped underfoot and cosigned by several nations professing similar ideals. I doubt that anyone who would not give themselves to uphold their beliefs can even try to understand. I myself, not being Muslim, cannot pretend to understand fully, but certainly I respect the ideal and the vigor of people who are unafraid to *do*.

That said, of course, as in so many cases of popular dissent in history, things go awry with the mob mentality, and a lot of people have started acting crazy. The deaths that have happened are tragic, and I can only hope order is restored as soon as possible. Keep in mind that only a small percentage of people there, like anywhere in the States, are prone to rioting and violence...but those are the ones we see on the news. Nobody's paying attention to the cats writing letters to government officials or praying for a swift resolution and wisdom to the offenders.

And nobody in the US should get too riled up anyway; we've got Pat Robertson speaking for us, right? If we (as a whole) REALLY don't want him on the mic, why is he?

Islam is no more a cult than any other religion, code, philosophy, culture, alliance, affiliation, government, club, whatever. The 5% rule applies, though, as it does everywhere.

In Toledo, who made the news? The Neo-Nazis. Not the chefs at a hotel who perfected a gourmet duck ravioli recipe. Not the 8 year old who won the spelling bee.

I think you are fundamentally missing the point of those questioning what is happening.. Sure Pat Robertson SAID someone should be assasinated.. The radical islamists actually DO THE KILLING.
That's where the disconnect is.. Sure the Muslims may believe that their religion comprises 99-100% of their everyday lives but that does not mean EVERYONE should be held to that same ideology. This isn't some isolated event.. This seems to be the defacto response for alot of Muslims when they feel slighted, lashing out violently at whomever they perceive to be an infidel. Not to mention the internal strife between the different sects of Islam. To me it seems that alot of the leaders in the Islamic communities are facist. The ones that advocate the things we see so much of that is.

there than what they saw of us during the Rodney King riots, the Klan marches, the Pat speeches, news of when Arab-owned stores were burned down.

Everyone's got the idea that entire populations of nations are on the street with sticks and torches screaming death to the infidels when it's just not that way.

The thing is, when people in our country get to acting crazy, we try to explain the problem to ourselves...they're the bottom of the barrel, they have no sense, they're the hicks, rednecks, etc. But they don't have anyone to make that explanation to us about people acting out over there. For all we know, the rioters could have been the free radicals messing things up in their communities in normal peacetime, too, the ones viewed as undesirable, unbalanced, etc.

I really think we're not aware of enough of the situation to even be making a post this long on it, much less ascribe the behavior we see to entire populaces.

determine what values they hold dear through the legislative process. Respect isn't legislated or required beyond the limits of the law and ppl are allowed to freely speak against many institutions(including relgious ones). However threats of violence and violence itself are illegal

Muslim women aren't allowed to wear hijab in some european countries, and we aren't allowd to express ourselves religiously, but it's a free society huh?

Pass me with that. Do you even know what you are talking about? The situation in Europe is VERY dffernt. From what i've gathered in debate here on OKP there are only 2 forward thinking countries in ALL of europe in this regard.

Honestly, there is no reason to even discuss this with you. All I said was that Denmark didn't follow relgious law(which is the truth) and you're increasingly becoming more of an asshole about it when you could easily just have a conversation. On that note, I really rather not entertain a pointless convo with someone who resorts to condescension and acting like a child. You obviously feel that the cartoons shouldn't be allowed. I disagree, I think it was in poor taste but a paper should be allowed to make a cartoon about whatever it wants. If people don't like it, they don't buy the paper, they write letters, they demonstrate or if it's illegal, they take them to court. The violence was unnecesarry. You can't choose your liberties a la carte in a country, you either accept all of their laws or you accept none of them by moving somewhere else.

Obviously the French, and Danish operate very differntly, and you claim to have insight to this, so where is the information so we can have a better dialogue?

From my understanding, England and France are leading the way in what has been Europe wide discrimination against muslims from all origins and it is turning into a powder keg because the immigrants and those on work and student visas don't have the rights that we do here.

You just said you had useful first hand knowledge. Where is it?

I'm being VERY serious.

off the top of my head. I can tell you what I experienced. I lived in a Muslim project in Stockholm, I mean they called it a project but their projects are much nicer than the ones here. Muslims were allowed to practice openly in Sweden and I believe that Denmark is like minded. Sweden has allowed a lot of Muslim refugees into its country because it is a neutral nation and has fairly lax immigration laws. As far as integration, I think that takes longer because these are for the most part all white countries with all of the people being Danish or Swedish or Finnish. So there is a distinctive culture and there is a pressure for ppl to conform to that culture. I know job opportunities are limited for all foreigners as well. I don't know if Denmark's policies are exactly the same as Sweden's, but I saw Muslims dressed in traditional garb went I visited Copenhagen, so I'm assuming that they weren't just breaking the law.

look at the headlines on the news..."Angry protests over cartoon" followed with footage of people in turbans burning flags, shooting, fighitng with cops...

then what follows? "Egyptians storm and riot over Ferry sinking" followed with footage of egyptian cats (some in turbans) rioting and throwing shit

To most people viewing this, what do they say? "damn them muslims is going crazy"

You can blame folks for their ignorance but you can't blame them for the shit running on the news 24/7. furthermore there should be more blame placed on the people committing these violent acts. A simple "they are offended so they react" does nothing but absolve blame. Everyone is at fault

I could see you claiming that people just want to rant if no one had DIED over a stupid ass cartoon... I have a question. If the Muslims committing these acts are so offended why not just boycott the publication, or just plain not read it?
It seems to me that they want to bully others into being offended by the cartoon also. That smacks of Facism to me. If I were a Muslim I would be praying for a MLK figure for my people.. Someone that can acutlly portray the peacful aspects of Islam as opposed to just telling people how peaceful Islam is.. I for one believe that we all understand the Muslims being offended by the cartoon..Heck we black folk had to endure much worse depictions of us in the media and still do to this day. The problem is the DEATH of innocents that leaves a bad taste in my mouth about the CURRENT state of the Islamic world.

152. "Ayaan Hirsi Ali RESPONDS - 'Everyone Is Afraid to Criticize Islam'"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.spiegel.de/international/spiegel/0,1518,399263,00.html

Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the Dutch politician forced to go into hiding after the murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh, responds to the Danish cartoon scandal, arguing that if Europe doesn't stand up to extremists, a culture of self-censorship of criticism of Islam that pervades in Holland will spread in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen, free speech.

SPIEGEL: Hirsi Ali, you have called the Prophet Muhammad a tyrant and a pervert. Theo van Gogh, the director of your film "Submission," which is critical of Islam, was murdered by Islamists. You yourself are under police protection. Can you understand how the Danish cartoonists feel at this point?

Hirsi Ali: They probably feel numb. On the one hand, a voice in their heads is encouraging them not to sell out their freedom of speech. At the same time, they're experiencing the shocking sensation of what it's like to lose your own personal freedom. One mustn't forget that they're part of the postwar generation, and that all they've experienced is peace and prosperity. And now they suddenly have to fight for their own human rights once again.

SPIEGEL: Why have the protests escalated to such an extent?

Hirsi Ali: There is no freedom of speech in those Arab countries where the demonstrations and public outrage are being staged. The reason many people flee to Europe from these places is precisely because they have criticized religion, the political establishment and society. Totalitarian Islamic regimes are in a deep crisis. Globalization means that they're exposed to considerable change, and they also fear the reformist forces developing among émigrés in the West. They'll use threatening gestures against the West, and the success they achieve with their threats, to intimidate these people.

SPIEGEL: Was apologizing for the cartoons the wrong thing to do?

Hirsi Ali: Once again, the West pursued the principle of turning first one cheek, then the other. In fact, it's already a tradition. In 1980, privately owned British broadcaster ITV aired a documentary about the stoning of a Saudi Arabian princess who had allegedly committed adultery. The government in Riyadh intervened and the British government issued an apology. We saw the same kowtowing response in 1987 when (Dutch comedian) Rudi Carrell derided (Iranian revolutionary leader) Ayatollah Khomeini in a comedy skit (that was aired on German television). In 2000, a play about the youngest wife of the Prophet Mohammed, titled "Aisha," was cancelled before it ever opened in Rotterdam. Then there was the van Gogh murder and now the cartoons. We are constantly apologizing, and we don't notice how much abuse we're taking. Meanwhile, the other side doesn't give an inch.

SPIEGEL: What should the appropriate European response look like?

Hirsi Ali: There should be solidarity. The cartoons should be displayed everywhere. After all, the Arabs can't boycott goods from every country. They're far too dependent on imports. And Scandinavian companies should be compensated for their losses. Freedom of speech should at least be worth that much to us.

SPIEGEL: But Muslims, like any religious community, should also be able to protect themselves against slander and insult.

Hirsi Ali: That's exactly the reflex I was just talking about: offering the other cheek. Not a day passes, in Europe and elsewhere, when radical imams aren't preaching hatred in their mosques. They call Jews and Christians inferior, and we say they're just exercising their freedom of speech. When will the Europeans realize that the Islamists don't allow their critics the same right? After the West prostrates itself, they'll be more than happy to say that Allah has made the infidels spineless.

SPIEGEL: What will be the upshot of the storm of protests against the cartoons?

Hirsi Ali: We could see the same thing happening that has happened in the Netherlands, where writers, journalists and artists have felt intimidated ever since the van Gogh murder. Everyone is afraid to criticize Islam. Significantly, "Submission" still isn't being shown in theaters.

SPIEGEL: Many have criticized the film as being too radical and too offensive.

Hirsi Ali: The criticism of van Gogh was legitimate. But when someone has to die for his world view, what he may have done wrong is no longer the issue. That's when we have to stand up for our basic rights. Otherwise we are just reinforcing the killer and conceding that there was a good reason to kill this person.

SPIEGEL: You too have been accused for your dogged criticism of Islam.

Hirsi Ali: Oddly enough, my critics never specify how far I can go. How can you address problems if you're not even allowed to clearly define them? Like the fact that Muslim women at home are kept locked up, are raped and are married off against their will -- and that in a country in which our far too passive intellectuals are so proud of their freedom!

SPIEGEL: The debate over speaking Dutch on the streets and the integration programs for potentially violent Moroccan youth -- do these things also represent the fruits of your provocations?

Hirsi Ali: The sharp criticism has finally triggered an open debate over our relationship with Muslim immigrants. We have become more conscious of things. For example, we are now classifying honor killings by the victims' countries of origin. And we're finally turning our attention to young girls who are sent against their wills from Morocco to Holland as brides, and adopting legislation to make this practice more difficult.

SPIEGEL: You're working on a sequel to "Submission." Will you stick to your uncompromising approach?

Hirsi Ali: Yes, of course. We want to continue the debate over the Koran's claim to absoluteness, the infallibility of the Prophet and sexual morality. In the first part, we portrayed a woman who speaks to her god, complaining that despite the fact that she has abided by his rules and subjugated herself, she is still being abused by her uncle. The second part deals with the dilemma into which the Muslim faith plunges four different men. One hates Jews, the second one is gay, the third is a bon vivant who wants to be a good Muslim but repeatedly succumbs to life's temptations, and the fourth is a martyr. They all feel abandoned by their god and decide to stop worshipping him.

SPIEGEL: Will recent events make it more difficult to screen the film?

Hirsi Ali: The conditions couldn't be more difficult. We're forced to produce the film under complete anonymity. Everyone involved in the film, from actors to technicians, will be unrecognizable. But we are determined to complete the project. The director didn't really like van Gogh, but he believes that, for the sake of free speech, shooting the sequel is critical. I'm optimistic that we'll be able to premier the film this year.

SPIEGEL: Is the Koran's claim to absoluteness, which you criticize in "Submission," the central obstacle to reforming Islam?

Hirsi Ali: The doctrine stating that the faith is inalterable because the Koran was dictated by God must be replaced. Muslims must realize that it was human beings who wrote the holy scriptures. After all, most Christians don't believe in hell, in the angels or in the earth having been created in six days. They now see these things as symbolic stories, but they still remain true to their faith.

>>>Once again, the West pursued the principle of turning first one cheek, then the other. In fact, it's already a tradition.<<<

dude immedeately loses credibility and
overplays his hand with this. the west
ain't turned no other cheek on a large
scale from rome forward. and anybody
that studies history knows that whenever
the west directly confronted islam (see:
the crusades) muslim treatment was initially
BETTER than their western counterparts.

shit, ask a jew pretty much before the
formation of israel who treated them
better overall (western christians
or middle eastern muslims.)

also, he is mad that many muslim
coutries are totalitarian, but
the very WEST he jocks is the
same west that put those totalitarian
regimes in charge (or supported and funded them)
see: saddam hussein and osama bin laden

islamic radicalism is jsut as much a
case of global blowback as it is a
reaction to the israeli state...

but leave it to you to AGAIN try to
distill a complex problem down to
a simple, hateable solution...

rock on, hater...

Apologists on both sides, will either condemn or condone these actions.I mean,as dumb as Housenegro is,it still brought up a good point-No one is rushing to call these people calling for beheadings and such out.Even the OkayChristians will call a spade a spade once in awhile. And they're almost ALWAYS fucking wrong.

There is a very real concern in the Western world that all Muslims are like these guys, and the fact that there is no real backlash against this kind of extremism is disconcerting.Granted, the media doesn't give moderate to Liberal Muslims the time of day,and the Okay Muslims get more shit than they should, there has to be a point where a story like this pops up,and there's no rationalizing riots over a cartoon. Why would you take it so seriously,if you understand that the people who wrote it,don't KNOW that its religiously illegal to show a depiction of the Prophet?

These groups of people rioting are peer pressure and everything, but this brings up a great point-Why is it that anytime there is religious insensitivity, there is the call for murder? And why would any group(Christians are as bad),like Muslims, who get shit on anyway, why wouldn't they let it slide at all?

As sad & transparent as most of the European attacks on Islam are, Islam can defend itself ably.. the women whose rights she champions cannot, and for me, at least, women's rights worldwide remain a more pressing issue than the petty sniping between the west and Islam.

there are ways to promote womens rights
- within the islamic world, even - and
not offend muslims.

it is disengenuous for people to ride for
this woman and not acknowledge her bias
and the holes in her positions.

ISLAM is not the problem. anybody that
knows the history of islam knows that
it has not always been repressive to
women, and that ISLAM transmitted much
of the western knowledge and technology
back to europe after it imploded during
the 'dark ages.'

the problem is repressive regimes in that
part of the world that are quite saavy at
playing both sides of the fence, while keeping
their populace ignorant and broke. they allow
radical islam to exist because - for now -
it suits their purposes, giving an outlet
for the disenfranchised, keeping israel
occupied, etc etc etc...

the rights of women in the muslim world will
grow - as in the west and in the pacifci rim -
as they enter the work world and accumulate
their own WEALTH.

the only way the repression of women can be
blamed primarily on islam is if there were
no cases of female repression in any other
part of the world. since we know that's not
true, i have to totally dismiss the link ol'
girl is trying to establish.

In response to Reply # 189

like Christianity and Marxism, there's an ideal and then there's contemporary practice, or people who push that ideal in different directions. Islam as it's practiced now in a number of places strikes me as fairly corrupt, and, like you said, serving the purposes of a number of repressive regimes. And when people attack 'Islam' as though it can be equated with those regimes or specific practices, or as though attacks on the Prophet equate to attacks on those regimes, it seems to me that it reinforces the strength of radical Islam more than anything else.

However, I also believe that as long as corrupt regimes and radicals rely on Islam as the claimed source of their authority, such attacks are inevitable within the west. If there were more prominent muslims speaking out against the false use of Islam, this would be a legitimate avenue of attack; as this is not the case, Ayaan Hirsi Ali and others can most bluntly respond to those who commit oppressive acts in the name of Islam by questioning Islam as an authority. She is less concerned wtih convincing muslims than ensuring the support of the west in maintaining its current institutions and not sacrificing freedom of speech or permitting forms of Sharia law in the interests of multiculturalism, for fear of what may become of the rights of muslim women in the west.

I don't feel there is any positive move that can be made in such a situation without negative reprercussions, so I have to admire her actions in spite of them.

and is central to the debate being held over these cartoons...

-SPIEGEL: Is the Koran's claim to absoluteness, which you criticize in "Submission," the central obstacle to reforming Islam?

-Hirsi Ali: The doctrine stating that the faith is inalterable because the Koran was dictated by God must be replaced. Muslims must realize that it was human beings who wrote the holy scriptures. After all, most Christians don't believe in hell, in the angels or in the earth having been created in six days. They now see these things as symbolic stories, but they still remain true to their faith.

This is my issue...The fact is, that, unlike the other major religions, in Islam, a book that was written BY MEN, however long ago, is used to dictate every aspect of day to day life, as the single determining factor...YOu cannot have religion and law tied up like that, it just...doesnt....work
We've seen it in the past
we see it now in Arab countries in the middle east,in Indonesia and so on

Now, I will prepare for the incredibly predictable shitstorm that is sure to follow

peace

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piss_Christ

This piece was supported by the National Endowment for the Arts in the 80s...that puts it at a comparable level of publicity with the Danish cartoons. It's a crucifix submerged in urine. I'm sure lots of Christians were horrified and offended...so much so that the case ended up on the Supreme Court as a 1st amendment test.

I don't think anyone tried to kill the artist or burn down an embassy, though...but I can't say for sure. And that's 'apples and oranges', as some of like to say.

On a side note, I'm tired of organized religion. This shit is getting really old. I'd rather see blood shed over something tangible, observable, and provable.

Nowhere in the Bible is it said that depictions of Jesus are blasphemy. Nowhere in Christianity is it established that such a depiction- in reference to dogma and practice of the religoin itself is anything more than in poor taste.

It's not the same, and you've been told this already.

The situation of the Muslim in Europe pales in comparison to the situation of the muslim in the US, IMO. Yes, many of us have been targeted here, but we are still free to work, etc.

The muslim in Europe is increasingly, and historically (from what i've read) a marginalized community with little propects for furthering their lot in life. This applies to Arabs, Asians, and Africans primarily.

Recognizing this, let's look at the world view of Islam. Few people who don't have a muslim in their family, or a close friend know anything about islam. Certainly in the west the prevailing attitudes on Islam are limited readings on the Crusade, Chuck Norris/Van Damme/Insert Action hero ______ movies, and the Nation of Islam.

The average westerner- especially Americans know little about Islam. My wife was saying this morning that most folk's introduction to Islam began with the hostage situation in Iran, and really has just been about negative shit.

Well, I know for a FACT that as more people are hearing about Islam they are becoming curious. They are having to look into it as it is a relgion/way of life that can't be sumised in a few sentences, or choice versus. It has to be studied.

Many of those people even after initially being anti-Islamic skeptics end up converting.

Even if they don't convert, they gain a deeper understading of Al-Islam.

I'll wager that many OKPers over the past year or so because of these stories in the media and their discourse here have learned a GREAT DEAL about Islam.

Allah (swt) knows best, and for many if these horrible things didn't bring Islam into people's minds there would be no opportunity for Dawah, and folk would just hold onto their idea of Islam as an evil thing.

See, go on and read alot of these responses. Alotta folk say stuff like "I always knew them folk was crazy." What did they know? nothing. If so many knew nothing, and thought they knew but now have an opportunity to know a lil sumin for real? It is positive, IMO.

Yup.

As for Islam itself? Islam is perfect, muslims are not. There is a serious problem in the muslim world regarding literacy. We are to defend our deen, but it don't necessarily have to be with weopons. But when folk can't read, and all they got is that ak47 in the crib that is part of their culture for every man to have in the house (independant of Islamic culture). What u think fittna happen?

What happens when an entire community is dependant on one man to teach them the word of God? What happens when they have no method to have real discourse- based on fact, supported by Qu'ran and Hadith? It leads to drastic, drastic fundamentalism.

You see that with any uneducated population: Bush supporters country wide, Christian Zealots, Racemen, etc.

This is what happens.

And it's a travesty, but it aint Islam's fault. Islam is a religion of scholarhip.

My sig is testiment to that.

Taking God's name in vain is considered blasphemy and I'm pretty sure there aren't protests of this magnitude when this occurs daily on tv and in magazines, etc. Unless a country is governed by Muslim law, the fact that it's considered blasphemous to depict images is a matter of no concern. If you live in a country, you abide by those country's rules.

would you say that a depiction of the Virgin Mary involved in sex of some sorts would somewhat compare to what is going on now? I've been trying to come up with an example to try and explain one sides situation to a few people, and this is the closest thing I could think of..In that, The singular most important fact about Mary in christianity is that she is a virgin and should be portrayed as such, just as it is essential to Islam that Mohammed(pbh)not be portrayed in anyway?

You can't possibly tell me with a straight face that most christians wouldn't find a urine soaked crucifix to be blasphemous. The people and their evolving standards determine what's considered blasphemous. I really don't think the texts are everything...not everyone is a fundamentalist.

Just because representations of Jesus are not specifically banned in the way that images of Muhammad are doesnt make it feel any less blasphemous to the people of faith.

This is about free speech and religious sensitivity. The comparison is an obvious one. But you're on a higher plane, clearly.

the reason why you haven't answered anyone's questions regarding Islam and whats going on over there, is because you don't understand!! you probably heard some 5%er/muslim raps on a mix cd and embraced it...u're just getting in where you fit in...

in 10 years from now you will be a stockbroker, politician, or a college proffessor of some sorts, speaking out against liberalism and racist radical muslims and angry dark people all over the world. i mean, once you are done with your "i-love-everything-hip-hop-and-black-and-i-must-rebel-against-my-parents" phase...

NO ONE SHOULD HAVE DIED OVER THIS CARTOON. YES THE PROTESTS WERE WARRENTED. YES WE HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO BE PISSED OFF. BUT THERE WAS NO NEED TO BURN ANYTHING (except maybe a flag or two in ernest protest) OR KILL ANYONE. WHILE WHAT WAS DONE WAS IN THE NAME OF ISLAM IT IS *NOT* ISLAM. KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE IS *NOT* A PART OF ISLAM.

HOWEVER, I WILL NOT STAND TRIAL HERE FOR THE CRIMES OF OTHERS JUST AS I WOULD NOT EXPECT ANY OF YOU TO ANSWER FOR WHAT OTHERS OF WHATEVER PARTICULAR GROUP YOU BELONG TO HAVE DONE. WHETHER YOU KNOW IT OR NOT THESE THINGS ARE DISCUSSED IN ISLAMIC COMMUNITIES. JUST BECAUSE IT'S NOT ON CNN'S 5PM NEWS UPDATE DOESN'T MEAN IT'S NOT DISCUSSED. IF IT'S THAT IMPORTANT THAT YOU'RE IN ON OUR INNER DISCUSSIONS I'LL POST WHEN THE NEXT ISLAMIC CONFRENCE IS AND YOU CAN ATTEND AND SEE FOR YOURSELF.

THERE. HAPPY NOW?

220. ""Okay Black People, you're rioting over a crackhead's arrest""
In response to Reply # 0

If I said that at the time of the King riots, how exactly would it be any different from the statement you made?

They're the same to me because:

- They both oversimplify/reduce the issue to the most basic. (ie - King's arrest wasn't a symbol of racism in the police & society in general, it was just some crackhead getting arrested.) By doing this, you completely toss out the context the events happen in. And that's dumb because context is everything.

- They come from the perspective of an ignorant outsider - someone who either refuses to or is unable (because of lack of knowledge/experience) to EMPATHIZE with the people affected.

No one here is defending the rioters, obviously it's some dumb shit. But it's the work of extremists exploiting the situation for their own gain, just like the re-printing of the cartoons was the work of pseudo-white-nationalist editors and papers in France and elsewhere exploiting anti-muslim attitudes for their own financial gain by re-printing the photographs.

Essentially, extremists on both sides are using this issue to drive a wedge between everyone, making us think that there truly is an "us" and "them" divide in the world.

It seems you're buying the propaganda.

Of course, the only winners in a real "clash of civlizations" are terrorists and white nationalists, and I don't think you want to see either of them win, do you?

- I just explained how.

>name me one black leader that called for the
>death of ANYBODY over the rodney king riots...

- Name one muslim leader that called for the death of anybody.

You've got agitators in the crowds, those who have an interest in rioting, and people who have extreme messages, but then again, you had that in LA.

> - I'd be worried if someone like you didn't think my post

- true. I'd hate for you to leave this post with critical thinking skills. and god forbid you start thinking outside of that box...

>>how do you compare rioting to what these muthafuckas over
>>there are doing...
>
> - I just explained how.

- and that is what made it a dumbass response. You are comparing hands on OPPRESSION to some fucking cartoons. whether or not anybody agrees, black folks felt oppressed and felt like punching bags 4 the police and they retaliated...now, help me to understand that these cartoons printed up in 2006 were an EXTENSION of ongoing OPPRESSION and IMPRISONMENT handed down by the Dutch people toward muslims...if you can do that then I will co-sign these "Demostrations"

>>name me one black leader that called for the
>>death of ANYBODY over the rodney king riots...
>
> - Name one muslim leader that called for the death of
>anybody.

- I'll do you one better - how about you name ONE PERSON that was screaming for the death of anyone following the rodney king beatings...hell, to my knowledge, there hasn't even been an attempt on any of those cops lives up to this point. yet you still think u made a strong comparison? riiiiiiight.
