a lot of the filipino restaurants i've been to aren't as glamourous as thai or viet restaurants. they're wannabe goldielocks' or mom and pop joints cafeteria style where you pick the food in front of you.

ive seen many white ppl in divey asian joints. if the food is good they;ll go. but why not filipino. how has that not transcended yet?

ive seen many nice filipino spots, and they just got filipinoes with their non-flip friends. but never a group of just non-flips

I put that in quotes b/c I realize everyone has different tastes & what may smell bad to one culture smells great to another.

with that said, the food & restaurant in general smelled bad to me. Similar to my experience w/ Singaporean(?) food. Korean food also has a very strong smell.

you find them more in the colleges. but its tougher cause were more in the minority. unlike la and sf when you can find a grip of us all over. here we actually have to seek each other out.

there are some groups here. but like i said you really have to know or find ppl.

i went through my angry i hate white people phase in 8th grade...i was still politically involved at UCLA but that got boring because i felt like i saw the same people all the time. i guess u can say am still involved by getting my master's in social work..but i feel less drained from it because it's more about application than arguing concepts and theories. plus i'm not so much focused on filipinos or asian americans in the scope of the work i do. i want to learn more about working with other communities as well.

I was in that stage the begining of high school. It's something we grow out of. I've been active toward the end of hs & my two years at ucsc. i transfered out to usf, and i've kinda gotten a bitter taste for activism in light of recent events. Especially after working with folks that are just down to rally and protest but not work in the community. I dunno i'm kinda in this weird state right now.

i got disillusioned when i realized that a lot of people don't grow out of it or at least have their anger manifest into something more productive by reaching out to other communities and really listening to the people. i felt that a lot of people have all this ra-ra rhetoric about pedagogy and all that, but they use it in a language that the people that they supposedly serve don't really understand. bah humbug i'm not gonna get started. lol.

it was kinda funny though. one of my housemates was black and we would always be at oakes together. the oakes community knew as the guys that didn't fill out their apps properly and got sent to kresge instead of oakes.

i liked kresge though. i walk barefoot sometimes.

OOhhh the taqueria! They got one at oakes too. and downtown, but viarta is dope too. Damn gotta go back to the cruz, and ferrells donuts! damn. The days of getting high and pigging out...nostalgia.

Ya as far as emcee, there was me and one other dude, ya but mostly hippy guitar players. drum circles and whatnot.

peja's fully healed, 10 digits and counting.

we're riding the momentum of a 2 game winning streak!

the possibility of peja/ron ron is interesting though

Lang Whittaker from slamonline.com writes...

New York: Ron Ron wants to be there, and Isiah loves him (and you know Larry Brown would, too). Steph could step in and play with the most polished big man he's ever played with in Jermaine O'Neal, and finally give Indy a healthy point guard they can depend on. Nate Robinson could take over the point in NY, and Ron Ron would own Manhattan (and Queensbridge). Their salaries are pretty disparate, though Austin Croshere would make thing a little more equal.

Sacramento: The Peja deal has been talked about a bunch. But Peja's numbers have steadily declined the last three seasons, and I'm not sure that Ron Ron would fit into the highly-structured offense the Kings run. The only thing that makes me think the Kings might pull the trigger on this is that GM Geoff Petrie is reportedly very close to Rick Adelman and doesn't want to fire him. This would be a way to shake things up without losing Adelman.

In response to Reply # 65

so im not sure. ive never actually heard malay. so i cant comment. filipinos are a race of mutts. weve always struggles for our own identity. we have malay, chinese. vietnnamese. spanish and now american blood is running thick in more ways then one. its tough.

tagalog wasnt even the official language for decades after the war. it was english. even to this day the medium of language in most schools and in the news is english. this is why we are benefitting from american call centers relocating. like india, the philippines is a land where everyone practically knows and speaks english on a colloquial educated level.

so much so that the filipino americans arent even teaching their kids tagalog. that saddens me. alot. i learned tagalog late in life, in my teens i was fortunate. i hope the next generation realizes this is a mistake. the kids will learn english no matter what. teach your kids the native language.

"RE: a lot of the immigrant filipinos"

clique-ish yeah.
but untrusting of non-filipinos? that's some backwards shizz right there.

outside the west coast, many filipino transplants and MOST american born filipinos come up to, and often cross, the line of denying their heritage. i'm talking about some girls goin' on about being Spanish-Hawaiian to officemates undermining each other. I say "outside the west coast" because my cousins tell me that in California, that attitude is nearly unheard of.

Hey, where's Benny Agbayani?

Incidentally, Ron Artest has his picture up at Ihawan in Queens.

Funny story about that. My cousin and his white wife had their honeymoon in Mexico and the Mexican women there were actually upset at her for "stealing" their men.

most of the kids at the school are immigrants, so their parents are still adjusting to american culture.

it's kind've a mix. you have immigrant parents who want their kids to assimilate as quickly as possible and refuse to school them on language+practices. but then you have other parents who would jump on the opportunty of programs like these

shit...and i got a tagalog final tomorrow too.

my parents didn't speak tagalog in the house. they speak ibanag. cagayan valley heads.

as a result i always kept getting ibanag and tagalog confused growing up. i've pretty much differentiated the two, and i can understand ibanag pretty well. i'm learning tagalog though.

The Philippine archipelago is essentially the last stop for island-hopping ancient malays. Even the muslims only got up as far north as Cebu I think. So geographically speaking, the Filipino dialects were pretty isolated and followed a different evolutionary tract.

As far as I can tell, the only obvious word with Muslim roots survivng in Tagalog today is "salamat." I wonder if there are more in Bisaya or Waray or any of those other southern Filipino dialects.

... but -- and I say this despite the fact that we Filipino Americans have adopted much of America's hip-hop culture -- we can't rap.

Great dancers, awesome awesome singers, even some real talented DJs. But rap? Nope. I don't think, as a people and as a culture, that we are angry enough at society to be credible as rappers.

I have fam in Greenhills--which is pretty upscale for Manila. Some cousins recently came to visit and the boy was rocking G-Unit gear and gold chains...and he told me that Salbakuta was what's hot on the streets of Greenhills.

I laughed. Then I smacked him upside the head.

This was after I smacked his sister for making me listen to Carlos Agassi.

Corny Pilipino rappers make me violent.

Biro lang, by the way.

Yeah, I agree with your sentiments regarding the lack of good crews in the PI. However, the fundamental problem with the hip-hop scene in the home country is that people with access to the media (either as consumers or producers) more often than not come from the ruling classes. So, the reservoir of underclass anger that gives good hip-hop its bite remains untapped--the people who really have something to say remain shut out of the studios and the airwaves. And we're stuck with Carlos Agassi.

It's even worse in Alabang, man. Sometimes I just wanna roll up into Town Center mall with an AK full of paintballs... But of course the security guards are carrying real firearms, so... heh.

The issue with underclass anger in the Philippines is that there really isn't any. Filipinos are angry, sure, but not that angry. And even when we're angry, we have this "bahala na si Dios/Batman" attitude. We take everything in stride.

Good for our blood pressure. No good for rap.

And anyway, in general, non-American rap really stinks. Proof of that is: Riiiiiico. Suaaaave. 'Nuff said.

I went to school in Alabang for a bit. Benedictine Abbey School. Now I think it's called St. Benedict's College or someshit.

But yeah, when I was studying at Bene you could see the beginnings of the bougie-ness that would straight up take over that place. Now I hear they've got a Marks and Spencer in Alabang. Shit, to this day when I think of Alabang I think of a wet market, though the actual market was a few miles up the highway.

... it's the majority of the filipino americans that would listen to pinoy rap just don't feel it because the majority don't live the lifestyle where they're angry at society or disenfranchised, etc etc. The same would go for non-Filipinos listening to Filipinos rap because they'd be like "What the fuck you angry about? Your people have the highest percentage of geniuses and beauty queens on Earth. And to top that off the only guy that could go toe-to-toe with Bruce Lee was Danny Inosanto. So chill."

As far as skill goes man that's really subjective, doubly subjective when dealing with the arts.

i get what you're saying but i don't think people feel hip hop only because they are disenfranchised. as you probably know the biggest consumers/customers are middle class.

Credibility is certainly about skill but you can't, as you put it, put "people and culture aside." Case in point: Andy Milonakis. He's definitely got skill but is he a rapper with any credibility. Hell fuckin' no.

"People and culture" are a huge part of the credibility of a rapper. Why don't I think Filipinos or Filipino-Americans will ever have credibility as rappers? Certainly not because they can't make up a rhyme and set it to rhythm. It's because a Filipino, just by the nature of his or her people and culture, cannot rap about any meaningful subject normally rapped about and be taken seriously. We're too good at turning adversity to our advantage. What? Nigga, you on food stamps? Well your pops joined the Navy so you ain't gotta steal santol and galonggong from the palengke anymore. And they actually LIKE eating canned corned beef and vienna sausages. Word, you drive a Hummer? You ain't sellin' crack. That's your moms' car. She a registered nurse and tita JengJeng's a physical therapist. They makin' duckets.

You think a Filipino is gonna listen to another Filipino rap about gangsta life or poverty or whatever knowing that they or their parents came to America to escape what is truly living poorly? Shit I know Filipino families that love living in America's so-called ghetto because compared to what they left behind, they're living like kings. And they're gonna sponsor nanay and tatay too so they can have air conditioning and not have to use a tabo or spend half their daily wages on a jeepney ride back to kubo they live in. The Cockroaches? Man, the cockroaches in the Philippines are bullet-proof and will tear through your tsinelas if you step on them.

Generalizations... the generalization that many Filipinos have left behind a poor lifestyle working for scraps and living in conditions that would appal anyone living in Bushwick or Compton... it's fuckin' true.

What's the alternative? Going the Will Smith/BEP route and rap happy stuff? About how your moms just bought a Lexus and she let you take it out to Miyagi's on Sunset? Or how you're 6'3" and playing center for the Filipino basketball leagues? Or how your girl scuffed up your new shoes during cotillion practice?

Credibility? If their front-man wasn't black and the girl that sings their hooks wasn't blonde, you think anybody in middle america would buy BEP's cd? You think Apl, whom Vette has rightfully pointed out as one Filipino artist that has garnered much "credibility" in the music business, can go solo? I don't hear The Apl Song playing on the radio, do you?

Now I'm sure those boys you reppin' are very skilled. But I ain't gonna buy their cd and not because they're Asian or because I'm Filipino. And really, when it boils down to it, it's not because they inherently lack credibility. Hell, that Chinese dude Jin that whupped ass on 106 & Park and is now a Ruff Ryder is nice but I ain't buying his CD either.

I'm just gonna DL them shits off soulseek.

i have no idea who this cat is, and i know one of the reasons why is because like you say, he likely doesn't have the credibilty/aesthetics to go with the skill to the point the peoples and circles i roll would check for him or recommend him. people and culture is important but for the many critical listeners like me that are down to support artists you got to be fresh with it.

well bambu grew up in watts and kiwi in koreatown. they definitely went through some fucked up shit, bangin and everything. i taught school in compton just south of watts, and growing up there as a young brown male ain't quite the american dream and bam drops some shit on his narrative tracks. he just returned from opening/touring with brian mcknight so things are looking up on his solo music. but like i said for me to listen and buy your shit you got to have enough style and substance for me to give props in the form of cash, filipino or not.

>
>You think a Filipino is gonna listen to another Filipino rap

believe it not there is a large filipino population that has been here for more than a generation or doesn't quite have that connection/concern to the realities of the PI. and a lot of them like hip hop, period, not the novelty of a filipino rapper, and can relate to their lives and art.

hell naw i never would give the impression that anyone should buy shit off of sympathy, especially since i don't do that either. the asian/filipino hip hop i have is only the selective shit i thought was fresh. fuck that i'm old school, i've seen ALOT of mediocre hip hop.

And really, when it boils down to it,
>it's not because they inherently lack credibility.

i'll put it this way... i disagree with "they inherently lack credibility". this one of the most anti-hip hop perspectives i've ever heard.

Apl for one i think is the most commercially successful. though he gets a major minus for the buffoonery that's become BEP.

and jay's already mentioned kiwi and bambu...if only they'd get more commercial acceptance.

... but now that you have, APL is pretty much the Filipino equivalent of Will Smith. His, or shall I say BEP's, raps are happy. Good for yt cuz they can be down and safe at the same time. The disadvantage that Apl has is that who the heck in middle america is gonna listen to a Mexican? And you know they think he's Mexican.

In response to Reply # 112

i got hooked up with 893 filipino songs last may... there are so many good songs & im still sifiting thru them..kinda surprises me somewhat that there are some songs in there that easily contest with american music.

and also, i saw andrew E. at 'el pollo loco' at the megamall when i was like 8 or 9 (before i moved to the US)

i wonder if that restaurant is still there...

OPM is awesome. I spent a good amount of time in the motherland this year and got to hear lots of it. You should hear Freestyle's live rendition of some of Mary J's old What's the 411? album stuff. They're amazing.

Interestingly enough, most Filipinos there would rather hear American music.

So what songs ya got?!
