"homophobia and reggae: aka the cappleton show last night"

Yesterday I went to see cappleton in concert (Raleigh-durham if yall didnt go, yall missed a pretty good reggae show)

Of course I was expecting the whole burn chichiman/ bwattybwoy shteez/ and once cappletons opening acts came on
*shrug/ the first guy was going on about that shit/ me and my girl were on the first row/ and I was yelling out no/ dont burn the chichiman/ and at the end he was like, me still got love for you sista/ so that was kinda alright/

second cat spent basically >15 minutes singing about that shit/ burn a chichiman and a bwattybwuoy/ that was pretty much his whole set/

then cappleton came on and at one point in an otherwise really great concert started on dem chichiman a burn/ mo fiyya on a bwatty bwoy and a lesbian em/ mo fiyyah and going on and on/

but what really irked/disturbed me was that the dudes (about 6 or 7 of em) around us were pointing at me and my girl and had their lighters on and shit/and singing mo fiyyah!. It was like they were in a semi circle behind us/
it was very disturbing./

I finally got pissed and was showing them the finger and asking what they problem was/ but still/
its not like we were all over each other/ we were just being/ i.e trying to enjoy the concert/ I was dancing with her and my venezolano friend (a he) so it wasnt like we were yknow/ slobbering over each other/ and most of those guys didnt realize that we were together instantly/ it was more like a dawning awareness, yknow. Like I saw one dude that kept staring at us/trynna figure us out and when he finally did/ you could see the oh shit thought through his expression.

But yeah/ I guess some of yall are thinking it was reggae concert what did you expect.
I did expect some of that/ to some extent/ I hadnt figured on actually feeling like I was up on trial/ I hadnt expected it to be that intense (that was like 5 songs deep/ shit! Its usually 1 or 2 songs at the most/ (and Ive been to plenty reggae shows/ even Buju let up a little on that shteez).

Why would I go/ knowing all this? Cause I like reggae/ shit they want to sing about burn bwattybwoy its not gonna turn me away/ im still gonna be at the shows/ pissed as hell and feeling like the step child/ but they are just gonna have to live with it/ and me/ cause im not going anywhere/ they want to claim Africa and Africans? Well guess what im part of Africa/ and im not going anywhere/ I dont plan on boycotting any show/ especially because I dont think you can force someone to change their view/ right? How do I feel about the violence in the lyrics/ its a damn shame/ preaching love/ equal rights and at the same time.../ I dont know. It hurts a little...

Its ironical though because at one point cappleton was saying how reggae music is a music for alla de people dem/ it promotes tolerance/ equal rights and justice (c. peter tosh), self governance bladdy bla.

by the way, sizzla is next week/ same venue/ I wouldnt miss it for the world/ and despite all this I enjoyed the cappleton show/ he played two of my fave tracks jahjah city and raggy road (this is the song that re intro'd me to reggae)/ politicized on the NO situation and bush/

.

i myself would never want to be god,or even like god.Because god got all these human beings on this planet and i most certainly would not want to be responsible for them, or even have the disgrace that i made them.

most people mind their own business/ at least in most parts of nairobi/ and damn near all of the coast/
here's part of an email observation:

"One of the most notable things I observed was tolerance from the
general public. Not to say that people are out there and no one
cares, its just that most people seem less bothered, its like your
business is your business type of thing. I noticed many fem guys
doing their thing,in fact most Salons are full of openly gay fem
guys and no one is overly concerned. People no longer talk about
gays as a species or abnormal, many have embraced them, but theres
still an obvious level of discrimination, which is everywhere ,so no
big deal."

once on the way to school as a kid.
the people on the block had caught a burgler and had pile of tires around him. they had whooped his ass, and were presumably about to put a torch to it.
dont know if the cops came in time.

but when that kind of mob/vigilante vengeance strikes...
i doubt the cops REALLY care.
its pretty much a "well thats what his ass gets" type of attitude.

this is the first im hearing of homless indians.
its possible.
there was a time when they would come to naija to work, but it was my understanding that most of them bounced by the mid-late 80s.

a cat get dropped with the most vicious combination I've ever seen outside of a boxing ring. They don't play that gay dude stuff in Jamaica at all.

My homeboys from Zimbabwe/South Africa/Nigeria/Ghana/Uganda ALL say the same thing: the only gay dudes you'll see on the continent are the ones who have lived in the West and moved back. My partners from Zimbabwe used to say that beating a suspected gay cat down was commonplace in Harare.

ironically more of those men stay in the household and raise their families

there is a ghetto in Kingston and there are 'no-go areas'. It don't matter where the fuck you grew up if you don't know anyone in the places I've mentioned, you are running a very high risk of visiting personal harm on yourself.

28. "I spoke about it in my "observations from Jamaica" post when"
In response to Reply # 12

I got back...

>was it a tourist?
>also how are the ghettos in JA
>i wanna go there and go to the ghettos
He looked like a "native" Jamaican to me, one second I saw 2 cats talking, next thing I know I saw right to the body-left to the body-right to the jaw combo that left old boy on the ground SLEEP. I was asking the other people around what happened, and they wee saying "ees a 'batty-mon'..." I was like "WHAT?"

"A BATTY-MON!"

Somebody then told me that "batty-mon" was Jamaican patois / slang for "homosexual".

As far as the "ghettos" go, I did see some poor areas, and I walked through "Trenchtown", which may be some of the worst poverty I've ever seen, but I got nothing but love from the people. Even the knuckleheads in Kingston were cool than a mug. No threat at all.

>but yea i know the ethnic black man don't play that
>ppl always criticed jamaican or african men as being "too
>macho"
>ironically more of those men stay in the household and raise
>their families
Not to mention that Africans are the most educated immigrants in the U.S.

In response to Reply # 8

you can say that once you come here it's much easier to come out/
as opposed to staying closeted in your home village because of fear
of public censure/ so that makes it seem like most of the gheys are those that 'go back'
but you cant use your argument to state that there are no gay africans/ you can use it to say that leaving and coming to a place where you actually have a space to exist and dont feel like some sort of abnormalcy/ makes it easier for people to accept self and even
face the possibility of coming out to family

>a cat get dropped with the most vicious combination I've ever
>seen outside of a boxing ring. They don't play that gay dude
>stuff in Jamaica at all.
>
>My homeboys from Zimbabwe/South Africa/Nigeria/Ghana/Uganda
>ALL say the same thing: the only gay dudes you'll see on the
>continent are the ones who have lived in the West and moved
>back. My partners from Zimbabwe used to say that beating a
>suspected gay cat down was commonplace in Harare.

Wouldn't God have a set plan for those people? So in my eyes it's like trying to either do God's work,...or they on some sussssssspect sh!t!

well they're religious types so it probably makes sense...

but yo... I can't remember the last dancehall song i heard without a gay-bashing reference...

sounds like they'd think they'd get the ghey if they forget to bash gays one day

i said i expected to hear such shit/ i've been to too many reggae concerts to expect otherwise/

but it has never been that intense/ i mean two of the opening acts spent 90% of their time on bwattybuoy songs/ and that, plus those fuckers behind us that were pointing at us and showing us their lighters/ that shit was crucial/

as i said/ i dont give a shit if they dont want to welcome me/ i want to hear the music im gonna go/ if someone feels like i threaten their sexuality/ or their entrance into nirvana/ fuck 'em

and yes i acknowledge its some sexism going on, too..

it's not just the gay thing though. i can't put it into words completely.

the culture there, admittedly i've never been (AND WILL NEVER GO), just seems really vile and fairly hateful of anyone who's not in line w/the fairly narrow and regimented backwards tradition. it's maddening.

i can't put it into words how much i abhor the idea of Jamaica.

Your homo emotions are making you talk about something you know nothing about...Jamaica? Hateful? The "no problem" island? Other than them not digging gays, you can't think of anything they are so-called "narrow-minded" or "hateful" about...get out of here with that bull...

the "not digging gays" (LOL) thing is enough for me, but there's also the way women are treated down there (from what i've heard since i've never been AND NEVER EVER PLAN TO GO).

son, i have less than 0 interest in ever visiting Jamaica. and it's not just b/c of the gay thing...not that that's not enough reason...the joint just doesn't interest me. it seems pretty boring, backwards, dirty, poor, and just uninteresting. i mean, i can smoke weed here. i can lay on a beach here. i can see poor niggas here. what's there? psssh.

...their music is like all other people's music... it's their personal expression. I used to say I was homophobic, but the truth is, I simply don't think some practices are normal of man. If I were truly phobic, I wouldn't be able to work alongside them or walk past them on the streets. And yes, there are indeed some people that are like that, and others that are simply violent because they don't know how else to deal with it. That really doesn't have anything directly to do with reggae, because that happens right here in America too. (My opinion, pieces of this element were portrayed in films like "American Beauty".) Is it wrong to behave ignorantly violent at the mere presence of it? Of course, these people may even think they can straight up beat the sexual preference out of a person. Should musicians be criticized and censored for their thoughts? I've never believed so.

Most folk know me as OJ.

i mean i wont lie/ i got a bit nervous last night but i didn't feel at all unsafe/ it's not like i was at some place where some violent shit could take place/ and i wouldn't have someone watching my back/ i did have friends in there/ but i understand/ that's part of how they want to express themselves and im gonna feel uncomfortable/ disagree with what they got to say/ but leave them be/

it's just that/ i really wanted to fuck those brothas up that were pointing and shit/

i think rappers spend more time:
killing each other, selling coke, degrading women, making list of their material possession, saving the world, running from the cops, going to jail, going out of jail, finding god, starting labels
in their songs

reggae deejays are ..hmmm.. different

i think that's pretty much it. if you're a deejay and have nothing to say about homosexuals, then others are gonna wonder and turn it against you.

to put this in perspective, I love Meshell's music, so I made the mistake of going to her concert. It was uncomfortable to say the least, what I walked into, I imagine it must be like, a black gay club or something... twenty minutes was enough I was out of there. My girl couldn't stop laughing at me, kept teasing about that "tall choc brother who was checking you out Mikey, did u see him???"

My point... I appreciate the lesbos catalouge from the comfort of my front room, because me naaah par in no chi-chi man bar...

sounds like it woulda been a better idea to jus play your music in your room real loud and jus deaded the show...cuz I mean, its kinda expected that shit is gonna happen, and if you knew you were goin to be salted about it to a degree...I jus don't see why you would even want to put youself in that position...granted being white at those shows isn't exactly 'accepted', its more like whatever, enjoy you paid, but being gay and being there, is well somethin' I wouldn't want to experience...

i am writing about my experience last night/
im being pretty lackadaisal about the homophobia cause i
coulda come more militant and shit/

and really/ what's the point of this question? like is there something i said that offends you?
i dont get it/
im getting the most backlash from hardcore reggae fans like i just tried to crucify the music/
even after i clearly enjoyed the show last night and
clearly i like reggae

One of the most (if not THE) most liberal town in NC. They would have to just set the whole campus on fire, cause it's everywhere.
That goes for the whole Triangle, as well. Bun di Shaw, bun di Central, bun di St. Aug, bun di NCState, and especially bun di A&T.

I wonder if reggae artists know how popular their music is with gays, though. Dancehall blasts in gay clubs as homos and lesbians slow and fast wind all night long, better than many heteros. I think it's part defiance, part "I'm gettin crunk in the club, so I'ont give a fuck."

And it's ignant. But what club music hasn't been ignant?
From Jigga to Biggie to Ying Yang to Beenie Man, the music that bumps in the club has always been full of vile lyrics. But then again, all the party-goers are drunk, crunk, high, horny, and about to commit vile sexual acts themselves when they go home, lol.
So I don't think they really care if women are bein called bitches, dude is promotin drugs, or gays are told to burn as long as it has a good beat so they can tear the club up.

Plus, I bet 85% of American reggae listeners don't know what da fuck them niggas are sayin, anyway.

Cause y'all dont seem to read where I say I enjoyed the show (first line)
y'all dont read where I started to get pissed off when I had 7 dudes behind me pointing their lighters in my direction/

Most people are so busy asking why I would go knowing this (I think I even address this) that they refuse to see that I have much love for reggae and rastafari (damn near all my uncles are hard core rastafari/ I grew up around this ish/ part of my decision not to eat meat stems from rastafari teachings/ to me the overall message about uplifting black people and never forgetting our history/ far supersedes my getting pissed off about the bwatty bwoy ish. Hell I even talk about how capletons raggy road was the song that made me redigg reggae all over again after a spell of pure dancehall/shabbaranks type music and totally appreciating a lot of the music that was played last night/

Still I get/ why would you go?
Like the only thing I got from that show was homophobia/ no playas/ there was a lot of teachings/ giving thanks and praise/ speaking about the politricks that went on as well/ and to me thats the whole point of going to a reggae show/ I could buy the cd yes/ but I wont get the part where the roots man tells the music to low and starts speaking to the crowd and/ the pull ups and shit/ the rastafari crowd (and im not talking about the perpetrators) come on now! Yall know the energy of a reggae show/ I shouldnt have to explain/

and that part of the music is homophobic/ imo you cant speak about contemporary reggae and ignore the bwatty bwuoy-ish that goes on/
i did write(extensively in most of my replies) about what else i enjoyed about this show/ i could've just focused on the homophobic part of it and left it at that? no? i haven't done that at all.
i feel like they didn't censure what they had to say so why should i censure my opinion of it? or my reaction to it?
that homophobia was a good part of the show too/ 3 of cappleton's opening act focussed only on it/ cappleton spent all of 3-5 minutes on this/ the rest of the time/ he was doing what it is i like the most about reggae/ speaking about the injustices that are currently going on/ i wouldn't trade that part for anything/ even being uncomfortable with being used as an example of 'who' deserves mo fiyya!

and it wasn't alleged homophobia/ it was blatant homophobia/
i am gay yes/ and if you could honestly tell me that reggae is only about homosexuality and burning down the ghey then i would question why i went to a reggae show or even why i appreciate the roots natty dread -ish
because i believe its more than that/ then ima stay enjoying the music and the concerts/
im pretty sure there are things you dont agree with 100% and you choose to speak against it/ should i be any different?

>wtf?
>ok
>you point out the alleged homophobia
>even put it in the title of your post
>then

Im telling you right now. Be prepared for some intense Anti-gay rhetoric. Sizzla does not give a fuck about what people think. This man is not down with gays.

The sad part is the mob mentality that takes over at some of the shows. Dudes who would ordinarily see you and your girlfriend on the street and not say shit, get all smoked out and riled up.
( The mentality of a mob is a amazing thing to watch. Good or bad.)

The next thing you know, somebody is in your face. Security had to break up a couple of shoving matches.

I dont see how anti-tolerance can go had and hand with peace and love. How this is different than the KKK attitude is beyond me.

Have a great time at the show. Just watch yourself.

i love sizzla tho/ praise ye jah hail the emperor is the song i listen to when i want to give thanks and praise/

he makes me want to be bobo ashanti and most of his cds that i got deal with uplifing my people/
im always extra careful when im in such spaces with my girl/ though/
even though i do recognise that there's only so much one can do when facing a mob/ but i've been in too many reggae crowds that have shown much love for me to not go and appreciate the music/ and as i said before/ i always know a couple of heads at such shows/ i might be rolling a few people deep at this particular concert/ i just gotta call up some of my jamaican and african breddren/

but you did go with your girlfriend to a concert by a man wh, for all his good points, does make music with violently homophobic lyrics and is a part of a pretty homophobic community.

And then you danced with her and argued with one of the artists, drawing attention to your homosexuality.

Not the smartest move on the planet.

if someone in that crowd had decided to take sizzla's words to heart do you think anyone would have stopped him before either you or your girl got hurt?

i knew this about reggae/ i expected this/ if you read what i wrote/ what was different was having people point and alla that (im starting to sound like a broken record here)

i didn't argue/ i just said 'dont burn the chichiman'/ anyone could've said that/ and it was after this dude was off stage about 20 minutes later that some dudes *got that vibe from us/
meaning/ we weren't being blatant/ we were just dancing/ me, my girl and my venezolano hombre/ one dude might have caught something between me and her and told his boys/ but i dont think we were being like that/ but then again/ who knows/ i was just being myself/

as i said earlier/ i've been to such shows before/ ive heard the lyrics/ i wasn't going in there blind at all/

maybe im being naive here/ but i KNOW my friends that were in the crowd would've stepped in and done something/ i dont think the 4 or 5 bouncers that were 3 feet away would've not done something/ especially since they kept moving around trying to stop the weedsmokers and all/ this was 7 dudes being themselves/ i dont think everyone in that crowd was on that ish (again, maybe im naive)/

and hey/ it was capleton/ not sizzla, olu...

edit...
im getting catty.. its not good/
here's the deal. i understand your concern/ totally/
but do you understand that every aspect of my life bears some measure of risk? some places greater than others but it's always overhanging somewhere/ even when i leave a gay bar and there's a bunch of people standing out there/ sometimes im not sure/ *shrug i always have to be extra wary and aware/ like yesterday/ i was aware of what was happening/ when it happened

as someone that refuses to hide myself regardless/ i acknowledge the risk i put myself in/ and if something had happened last night/ i would acknowledge the my risk has consequences argument/

as an african gay woman/ im gonna face this for as long as my partner is same gendered/ as a member of the glbtsa i also realise that i have to pick and choose my battles/ i cant battle everyone and everything/ if i chose to do that/ shit i might have no life/
so it might seem that i am being complacent by going to a reggae show despite the fact that there are many elements of reggae that i enjoy/ but i feel that by not boycotting im also not letting them sit in a corner and ignore that i exist/ now im not gonna do it by blatantly putting myself in danger (and its relative in this situation, i guess)/ but im also not gonna deny myself the pleasure of my girls company and some goods roots reggae/ i met quite a few people i hadn't seen in a while yesterday and that, overall was a pretty good experience/ its not everyday im in a space with majority 'my people'

>i knew this about reggae/ i expected this/ if you read what i

How many of the other times did you have a girlfriend with you? The dynamic as a single woman and one as a woman paying attention to another woman are obviously different

>i didn't argue/ i just said 'dont burn the chichiman'/ anyone
>could've said that/

Riight. There are straight people all over the world who go to reggae concerts with their same sex friends and protest the 'burn the chichiman' lyrics

You stood out akon. In a potentially hostile crowd too.

>maybe im being naive here/ but i KNOW my friends that were in
>the crowd would've stepped in and done something/ i dont think

>ish (again, maybe im naive)/

In this case, yes you are. Assuming that out of however many people came to the concert there wouldn't be one of them would really be willing to hurt a gay person is being wilfully blind to a potential threat. So is assuming that your crew (who I'm guessing weren't right next to you) would get there in time to keep you from getting hurt

>and hey/ it was capleton/ not sizzla, olu...

My mistake.

That's your choice akon. I don't share your affinity for roots reggae so I'll never understand that part of it. I mean I like the music, but nowhere near that much.

Also I realize that your life involves risks mine doesn't. Still, I feel that this was an ill advised and potentially dangerous move on your part. You don't have to agree with me but I'm not going to pretend like I feel differently.

They gays are riding on their wardrobe turf. Do the knowledge.

Imagine your walking around in your neon pink mesh shirt, razor thin tight jeans, fucked up kingston haircut. You would be right at home in the Tenderloin, San Fran.

And most of the dancehall chicks look like skinny dykes with bad weaves.

Until Jamaicans learn how to dress, this beef will re-occur.

i myself would never want to be god,or even like god.Because god got all these human beings on this planet and i most certainly would not want to be responsible for them, or even have the disgrace that i made them.

to denigrate homosexuals. like white kids and dp, there are obviously other aspects of the music that she appreciates.

but in either case, you *know* what you're getting into.. how you're going to act surprised when the audience's sentiments mirror the entertainers', or are even more extreme, i don't know. it's a shame, yes, but not a surprise.

(and yes, a, i did read your post.)

there is no mistaking the position that dancehall takes on homosexuality. a gay dude is NOT welcome to come to the show/club/whatever.

a white person can walk freely into a dead prez show, because their message is not as cut and dry as being anti-white.(im going to stop here because im not the one to try and sort the ball of yarn that is their ideology. im simply making the point that they are not overt racists, as dancehall in generally is clearly homophobic).

this post is more about the audience's behavior than the entertainers'- i see where you're going, and i'll have to defer to you as regards the performers' message(s), but i think you're making a finer distinction than a lot of *listeners* do.

other than that, i'm going to bow out, as it's essentially conjecture for me anyway.

gays = closest thing to euro's that are readily available

what is incredibly ironic is the style (that goes and comes) of jamaican dudes dressin like gay europeans and dancing like fairies.

I could careless if someone is gay or whatnot but the biggest irony to me is watching mainstream reggae videos and whatnot some of the dances look a tad bit effeminate to me. This is fine with me but I look at the pure irony of it all.

Look at these pics for a laugh and pretend they are gay.
