"Computer Programming vs. Networking"

so i'm officially tired of being a whiz at just Microsoft Office...oooh i'm so adept at surfing the web and knowing the breakdown of url's, i know where my cache is and how to search for stuff in it..clean it out if need be...i can even play a little HTML <Tag>... but

i'm ready for the next level..this fall i'm going back to school...choosing between a

Certificate in C Programming (Windows): which consists of C Programming Part 1&2, Object Oriented Programming Using C++ Part 1, plus two electives which could include C++ part 2 or Advanced Visual Basic or Advanced Windows Programming...

or

Certificate in LAN Administration (Windows 2000) which consists of that course plus LAN Workstation Fundamentals...

i need some help in figuring out which is the better place for me to get started...all i know is in about 2 1/2 years i wanna be making some serious cash as (some type of) a computer consultant

Ive seen both sides, and you do programming within networking. Just not the same type. You have to program the equipment.

But, the microsoft piece of lan administration isnt what *I* would consider networking. Its more along the lines of setting up users, and network features used by the PCs. Not true networking. I dont know much about it, but I do know that Microsoft doesnt make networking equipment(routers, switches, etc) the just handle beyond the edge, or LAN, stuff.

Programming: Designing software
Administration: Using the software designed by others to complete a task.

I could be wrong.

Personally, Id NEVER support end-users. They can be the stupidest group of individuals in the world. BUt, with win 2k you can lock shit down so they cant really hurt themselves. ive worked in support, just not of PCs, more backbone switches, routers and such, and its a GREAT place to learn how NOT to do things. YOu have to know alot, but, after a while, it gets vanilla, and you'll know its time to move on.

that's why i chose to major in electrical engineering focusing on computer hardware, instead of computer engineering focusing on sofware .. i HATE mulling over code on the level that programmers do

but for the C course, expect some heavy programming

have you ever taken a computer language before? i never did and i jumped right into C my freshman year of college, and it was difficult for me. many of the people i know that do C/C++/Java as computer science majors go into straight programming jobs for computer companies, which i think is a little different than consulting

either one should make cash, i know the C/C++ one definitely will within 2.5 years - i know some cats that came out of school makin SERIOUS dough

and if you're gonna be fixing windows bugs, you got alot to fix

I may be biased becuase I am in college right now in the field of Networking. But to do computer programming you have to spend a lot of time in front of the screen, it is amazing how long they spend in front of the box. I'm in networking and i have a lot of computer classes, but i don't do a massive amount of programming, a lot of it is problem solving in networking.

still in demand.

Web development consists of two sub categories:

1. Web programming- Web programming consists of writing code in languages such as HTML, ASP, Javascript, VBscript, XML, etc..... whatever language fits your program best.

2. Web design- Web design deals more with the concept of the making a web application or site. Somethimes us programmer can only do just that, PROGRAM (we aren't too creative at times). So we need designers to tell us how a page should look, what it needs to do and how it should react with the users actions.

So in the process of web development, unless a person is a web designer/programmer, the web designers will usually write up a document, or verbally tell the programmers what they want the web application or site to do and look like....... then the web programmers take it from there.

It's the same with software development as well.

Peace!!!!!!

I prefer the title ,software developer(sounds more dignified), but I will put it this way..... if you wanna program in ANY language (the concept for all languages is pretty much the same), you have to want to do it, and not mind learning new languages all the time. The key phrase: YOU HAVE TO WANT TO DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Myself, I love writing code because at the end, you get to watch folks use your product (and screw up using your product) and it gives you a sense of "WOW!!!!! I made that software, and everyone is using it" and at the same time get paid for it.

If you decide to go into the programming field, I suggest (and I am not being funny) you go out and by the "Dummies Book" series for C and C++..... I have a few Dummie Books at the crib and they are good for everyone. They will teach you all the basics of writing code without all the nerd talk. Trust me, they are good. You should be able to pass your tests too, after reading them.

Here's what I would suggest in that case, look at the textbooks and if you don't understand the textbook, break out the Dummie book and it will put it in "regular folks" terms for you

I don't know anything about networking, though.

Peace!!!!!!

i was starting to think programmers were deranged nerds from what everyone else was saying ...lol

so about those Dummie books (and yeah i'm totally aware of how great they are..i have an HTML one)..do you think the books are a sufficient replacement for taking a course or you think the class instruction is still necessary and the dummie book can just be a helpful guide?

along with reading the books.......

But also keep in mind..... a lot of folks won't hire you without a degree (for best results) or some sort of techincal training. They usually don't care how many books you read.

Also, the classes (atleast the school I went to) require you to work in groups on certain projects, which is also good because it teaches you how to develop programs as a team, which in most cases is how the programming job market works.

You can have tons of folks working on one software package. So when someone tries to scare you with this phrase: "YOU HAVE TO WRITE MILLIONS OF LINES OF CODE"...... yeah, that's true if you are writing all the code by yourself and it is a big package like Microsoft Internet Explorer or Word.

Trust me, don't believe the hype, we aren't all a bunch of guys with pocket protectors and taped up glasses. Folks that say that are just made because they have to come to work in a suit and tie, while we come to work in our pajamas, t-shirts, baggy paints, with our hair looking like we just woke up.

Peace!!!!!!

"I'm the fire bearer
Holder of the sun
The Earth and the universe combined as one
An everlasting energy taking all forms
Blue skies on sunny days tell the storms
The one who tears down what you adorn
And curses the material things that you mourn
But look up in the sky 'cause I am the dawn
And the light that empowers your flesh as it yawns"
