"Fools are wildin' in St. Louis."

My wife's homegirl, who still resides in the Lou, was telling her how niggas are goin' ham with the rioting and looting. All over that incident where an innocent, unarmed dude was killed by the cops. Now the Mrs. is perusing her people's posts on FB, seeing all of the nonsense. Somebody got a video clip of niggas looting a QuikTrip and eventually burning it down. Tanks have been sent into the riot zone now. I swear......niggas. Everything started as a peaceful protest until unruly niggas, itching to find any excuse to act the fool, messed everything up. How are y'all STL OKPs holding up?

Wow... MAJOR fuck up from these cops.

Rule #1 at a cop related shooting (or ANY shooting) is to immediately administer medical attention to the person shot after calling for a med unit and making sure the person shot is no longer a threat. They should have at least LOOKED like they were trying to save his life.

Leaving the body out like that with no one around it doing anything is setting that department and the cops at the scene up for a media disaster... as we see.

I mentioned how cats are looting. I personally saw the vid of folks looting a QuikTrip. How in the hell is that conveying that you want justice? All that conveys is that niggas are opportunists who can't wait to find any excuse to commit crimes. Then what will happen is that certain morons will side with the cop saying that victim probably did do something to provoke the shooting. They will use what some of these dumb niggas are doing as an example of how the victim was of the same ilk and justifiably killed. Hell, that link in the first response is already showing some comments on that level, now that I think about it.

Their mantra is "No justice, No peace". And they meant that shit, it wasn't just a slogan.

Respectability politics mean absolutely nothing when your life has no value to the people with authority to kill you. They are attacking the only things that are respected and valued in their community.

Rioting has a purpose and can be understood and even respected. But there's no way you can justify someone using civil unrest as an opportunity to take some rims or steal some electronics.

Causing property damage can send a message. Looting just makes people look like fools and undermines the entire purpose of the protest.

emotional responses from behind our computers make less sense than the people who are on the front line not thinking out their decisions

In response to Reply # 28

Thats one of our biggest problems as a western society.
This gross amount of apathy and "no fucks given" attitude.
We need to be emotional. Not less.
Get mad.
Cry.
Scream.
Everybody is too cool to have feelings.
The emotions aren't the problem.
Its the lack of power/ resources.

I understand feeling helpless and frustrated
but it's way easier to tell someone else to essentially give up their lives when it isn't you
more often than not, rage isnt a logical solution worth anything over a long term

I see why the disenfranchised in St. Louis are fed up*, but random niggas with health benefits paying four figure rent or mortgages? I dont believe yall are about that action, nor should you be

*most of them aren't rioting because a boy was killed, they're rioting because they dont have shit

The idea that "I don't wanna mess up what I have" when someone's child is dead in the street. Perfect example of why change doesn't occur in the black community until something happens to someone relatively well-off.

or you can just keep being pretend mad online

And when did I imply that people should risk their lives.
I'm just talking about not suppressing our emotions.
I don't have all the answers, but I damn sure aint about to tell people what they SHOULDN'T do. Especially if I'm using this thing you say is a.... what was that..... computer?

If I choose to put myself in some form of risk, then so be it.
Honestly, you have no clue what I've risked for my own livelihood.

RE: get outta town! I'm typing behind a computer?????

the crux of this post is rioting. you're in the middle of the part where Binlahab suggested he's about that life

thus I said cosigning that dumb shit is using emotion rather than logic

>I don't have all the answers, but I damn sure aint about to

we're on the same page pretty much. if I were in St. Louis without hope I could possibly be prone to acting the same. but neither of us are there, so typing angrily about what we would do is pretty much moot

>Honestly, you have no clue what I've risked for my own

Perception. I was talking about the PERCEPTION in comparison to how Blacks are percieved when they riot.
I assumed my statement was pretty damn clear.
Political figures and news outlets in America rarely attempt to try to understand or sympathize with Black folks' reason for rioting.

they gonna file a claim, get their insurance check, get a check from the city, and bounce and taking those jobs and that revenue elsewhere...then niggas gonna be like "we don't have nothing..." well you're right. cuz you didn't want nothing.

like i get looting in cases like Katrina.
I get rioting like what they did in Egypt.

i don't get it when it's your own community, your own home, and YOUR PEOPLE gonna be the ones who suffer in the long run...

I just wish black ppl would think before reacting and come up with smarter plans...like if we gonna show out, let's show out at the police department. let's show out in the city square...let's not burn down houses that's next door to where we live...cuz fire spreads.

Our rioting and looting is typically shortsighted, and hurts US more than THEM.

>we< will be left with the blight and under-served community. >they< will either get their ins money and bounce or choose not to rebuild.

(...then in 10 years we will be complaining that we live in a food desert)

If we want to hit them in the pockets and make a point, let's organize and boycott (but I still don't understand why we mad at the businesses in this situation)

they don't understand that their friends, family, neighbors are the ones working at Walmart, Footlocker, Autozone for less than $10 an hour...when those stores got looted and are shut down, the salaried owners still gonna get their pay...those little cashiers, stock ppl are out of a job now.

This type of rioting and looting hurts the little people in the long run...not corporations...because you burning my building down is a tax write off and if I was struggling to pay it anyway? oh you helped me out...they are affected in the short term, in the long term this loss of business and revenue will affect the black community.

And when I ask ppl "what's the benefit of looting the Quikmart?" someone told me "cuz these places come in and take away from small business" and I'm like what that got to do with Mike Brown tho?

This neighborhood was on the sketchy app anyway. What difference does it make if you have a kwiki mart in walking distance if you can't survive the trip? These million dollar businesses are the powerebases in that community when the citizens should be.

In theory rioting and looting can be exploited by all parties but the threat of outright chaos is necessary. It's necessary to embarrass the mayor and the police chief and the governor. It's necessary to threaten business owners because they're the only ones police answer to.

they may not be insured to the degree that they can rebuild. especially the smaller ones. and the larger ones may opt out of the area. which will leave the ppl there w/o whatever service was being provided and w/o whatever goods were being sold. so now the area is dealing w/police brutality, crushed morale AND a lack of services and goods. and that lack may not be addressed for decades.

STL already has nabes like that in the city. nabes that were torn up in rioting in the 60s and haven't recovered. cities across the country have nabes like that (*stares into camera*).

Quiktrip may be the only exception. While I agree with some of your statements you can't rationalize rage. These people have suffered trauma. It's not the first time someone was shot and killed by a cop.

There were no repercussions before. They may not have used the most politically correct way to make their frustrations known but they did make their frustrations known. What do you think no justice no peace means? If a kid gets shot one day and it's business as usual the next day -- that's a bigger problem to me than a ransacked kwiki mart.

all of the yelling and screaming and sign holding and chanting and marching and gathering that had gone on before the rioting and looting was well covered in national media. they didn't need to take this extra step. it doesn't help communicate much of anything productive. AND now today when the ppl in that area need to feed themselves they're gonna have to travel outside their area for food and services. and who knows how long that'll continue.

People at my job were all "omg, did you hear about the riots in St. Louis"

it's messy but it does keep the attention on the story for a few more days.

been riots without looting.

Spin is spin. Don't spin the shit ourselves.

From what I understand, peaceful protests were happening and then the police came out in riot gear.

They'll say they felt threatened by the groups protesting, but ultimately this is about the group protesting being threatened by the police.

Never lose cite of that. If there are leaders in place there (which I've seen some of from the twitter feeds) they need to control the messaging for the consistency of cause.

any big crowd brings out opportunistic thieves and a riot is a once in a lifetime opportunity to buck and grab.

i don't get why people react strongly to it. it happens every time

that sh*t is HIGHLY debatable. you ever hear about this
sh*t going on in eur with this rate of frequency?

the national guard needs to be outt. here's a riot going on.
i want this to go back to the 60s with the police dogs and
hoses and shit. at least then, they began to listen just a
little bit.

i want shit to get so bad that obama speaks on it and forces
him to take a action.

The rioting and looting happened largely in the wake of Dr. King's killing - by then the movement had moved quite a bit mostly by peaceful means. The dogs and hoses were used by whitey in response to those peaceful protests, for the most part. This was the point - to make whitey look like an animal. To expose to the world the injustice with which whitey dealt with us.

Tearing up a QuikTrip doesn't expose anything about whitey . It doesn't expose police brutality. It only makes us look like opportunists. Sadly it's too easily spun away from the message - that we're fed up and won't stand for the injustice. That message is lost. And even where it's heard - whitey don't care about us tearing up our own neighborhoods.

fuck you.

"Race riots" have been going on since jamestown. And definitely throughout the 50's and 60's.

It's not a neat little black history moments. Riots were as instrumental in desegregation as non-violence. Truman's decision on the civil rights act was spurred by 3 decades of race riots as much as non-violence...
but lets not talk about that.

Is there really an ideal place to be black? To be Jewish? To be an indigenous person?

Some people just get fucked with the world over.

If I had to think of a "better place to be black," I wouldn't look to Europe. Maybe Barbados.

i can understand why the ppl looted. i think it was completely misguided and will end up causing more harm than good. it won't bring the wanted attention to the underlying injustice. in this case that injustice was already receiving attention. also, i am sure the looting wasn't some planned event the ppl engaged in b/c they wanted to raise awareness of police brutality. i think they were MAD AS HELL and rightfully so and their rage was misdirected. that's how i see it. i think the ppl were right to be enraged and wrong to loot.

My beef with fools looting and all is how it doesn't hurt those whom the people have beef with. It hurts your own community in the long run. Those whom the people have beef with ain't losing sleep over you tearing up your own neighborhood. You're just giving them reasons to feel justified with taking excessive action against you and yours. If a dude who lives across from me does something foul against me, what do I look like tearing up my own house and yard in protest? That's idiotic.

If folks really wanted to take action to show that they're tired of the injustice, they would've limited their rioting to the neighborhood of the oppressors and limited their actions to just burning those neighborhoods down. Looting doesn't make you look like you're about justice. It waters down your image of indignation you're trying to convey. All that overly emotional bull is the stuff folks with arrested development support.

These people don't own any of these places and the fact that someone from outside can come into the community and murder with no repercussions challenges the very notion that the community belongs to the people that live there. People really need to internalize that. This ain't no amnesty international strategy meeting. This ain't even 92. These kids have a black president and had no reason to believe that the system would work so horribly against them.

You seem to be more concerned about image than anything

It makes no sense to try to appeal to their sense of belonging to it since they're acting up because that very sensibility has been violated.

Besides, this ain't mr. hooper we're talking about.

the only "we" that needs to be said is that "we" are all individuals. What those small group of opportunists are doing doesn't have anything to do with "we" as a people. I know whites will still think otherwise. However Black people as a whole have to stop with that kind of blame first.

In response to Reply # 0

http://gawker.com/anonymous-vows-action-over-shooting-death-of-unarmed-te-1619233440

Anonymous, the hacktivist network, released a video message Sunday encouraging protests and threatening their own actions against the police who shot 18-year-old Michael Brown and left him for dead in the streets of Ferguson, Missouri.

"The entire global collective of Anonymous is outraged at this cold-blooded murder of a young teen," the group said in the video. "Not a week goes by that some young person— usually of minority ethnicity—is slaughtered by murderous police in the USA." Brown, who was black, reportedly had his hands up before he was shot "more than just a couple" times by police Saturday, according to the local force's chief.

Saying it wasn't enough to "simply justice for this young man and his family," Anonymous demanded that the state's congressional representatives introduce a national set of police conduct standards and call it "Mike Brown's Law."

The group also demanded that police treat protesters with respect, vowing that any abuse would lead the group to "dox and release the personal information on every single member of the Ferguson Police Department."

"This is your only warning," Anonymous stated.

The group has set up a website to organize cyberprotests on Brown's behalf and is using the hashtag #OpFerguson. As of this writing, the group's Twitter account had been suspended.

Here is the complete text of Anonymous' message, much of which is repeated in the video above:

Anonymous Operation Ferguson - Press Release

Sunday - August 10, 2014 1:30 PM CST USA

A little over 24 hours ago in Ferguson, Missouri - USA the Ferguson Police Department shot an un-armed teen 6 times and killed him. His body was left to lie in a pool of blood in the sweltering heat for hours while the police militarized the area against protesters and attempted to concoct a reasonable story as to why they snatched this innocent students life for no reason. The St. Louis County Sheriff Department even sealed the roads leading to Ferguson in a vain attempt to prevent protesters from reaching the city. His name was Mike Brown, he was 17 - and he would have started college next week. Instead, his family is struggling to come up with funeral costs.

The entire global collective of Anonymous is outraged at this cold blooded murder of a young teen. Not a week goes by that some young person, usually of minority ethnicity - is slaughtered by murderous police in the USA. For this reason Anonymous will not be satisfied this time, as we have in the past - with simply obtaining justice for this young man and his family. Anonymous demands that the Congressional Representatives and Senators from Missouri introduce legislation entitled "Mike Brown's Law" that will set strict national standards for police conduct in the USA. We further demand that this new law include specific language to grant the victims of police violence the same rights and prerogatives that are already enjoyed nationwide by the victims of other violent criminals. The Equal Protection clause of the US Constitution demands nothing less.

To the good people of Ferguson, take heart - and take your streets. You are not alone, we will support you in every way possible. Occupy every square inch of your city. Open your homes and help in any way you can the protesters who will come to your city from every part of Missouri and the USA. Businesses and householders that are near protest rallies, open your WiFi routers so that live streamers and other independent journalists can use the Internet connections. Feed each other, keep each other safe - and stay in the streets until we are totally victorious in all our demands.

To the Ferguson Police Department and any other jurisdictions who are deployed to the protests: we are watching you very closely. If you abuse, harass - or harm in any way the protesters in Ferguson we will take every web based asset of your departments and governments off line. That is not a threat, it is a promise. If you attack the protesters, we will attack every server and computer you have. We will dox and release the personal information on every single member of the Ferguson Police Department, as well as any other jurisdiction that participates in the abuse. We will seize all your databases and E-Mail spools and dump them on the Internet. This is your only warning.

The time has come for more than simple justice for these atrocities. The time has come to draw a line in the sand and say "no more dead kids", no more police killings and beatings. Anonymous is drawing a line in the sand, and that line runs right down the middle of Main Street Ferguson, Missouri. Police impunity ends with the barbaric death of Mike Brown.

We Are Anonymous - We Are Legion - We Will Not Forgive - We Will Not Forget

EXPECT JUSTICE - DEMAND CHANGE

UPDATE - @KMOV: Confirmed: Anonymous group hacked into the City of #Ferguson website last night. All city emails are down.

First, I am at a level of rage that I've never felt with the countless and more and more frequent cases of trigger-happy garbage ass pigs fatally shooting people for absolutely no good reason.
So much that I openly embrace people who feel like rioting.
I absolutely want to join these brothers and sisters with all this rage I don't know what to do with.
I CAN'T HANDLE seeing this shyt anymore, and seeing that trash-ass commissioner's response to dear Eric Garner makes me want to burn down any police station in NY.
The Italian Mafia rejects really deserve to be struck with ebola, the whole lot of them.

Having said that, I also think it makes absolutely NO SENSE WHATSO-FUCKIN-EVER to destroy and loot your local businesses.
I don't really apply this to chain stores like WalMart, McDonalds, though it does affect those who work there who may live there.
But more so brothers and sisters who have their own shops, restaurants, ___-e-marts, etc.
Self-employment is the one avenue black and brown people have where standing up to shyt isn't necessarily grounds for "firing" you,
blackmailing you,
collegues who don't give a fck about shyt like this and snitching on any organzing work you want to do,
having background/credit checks done on you to disqualify you from providing for yourself,
and just economic sustainability for self and locally.
You ain't completely separated from the system, but more than if you just had a job for people who don't give a fck about your people.

That said, why destroy them?
If you're angry but have enough self-control to not knock everybody you see around you,
why would you not practice that on local businesses?

And then to hear the retarded argument that that's easier than a police station....are we serious??
NO SHYT it's easier BUT WHAT IS THE POINT?
THEY aren't the aggressors.
I've been involved in a couple of protests and the most coverage that was received was when drinks-after-the-ballgame ass folks felt threatened.
Aka the "normal" Americans.
So if the argument is about attention, why not aim for rioting the
"normal" Americans' neighborhoods,
policemen's neighborhoods,
let alone the actual PERPETRATORS in their homes and police station?
(Some have done it already I read; Bless them)

It just doesn't make sense to aim it at businesses.
Don't lose the very realness of the anger, just direct it to who needs to feel it.

This shooting and others like it show that Black life is completely valueless in our society. We live in a country where property and products are more highly valued and protected than a Black life. Yet the unarmed people, who it is perfectly legal to shoot down in the street like dogs, choked to death for selling cigs, shoot for trying to get help after an accident, or shoot with skittles in their pocket... all without any consequence are supposed to respect property more highly valued than their actual Black lives? I don't think so.

Respect black life first and then you have grounds to ask black people to respect your property.

If my child, husband or brother can't make it home from school or work without the police gunning them down, then I don't want anyone to be able to carry on with business as usual, not the quickie mart, stop and shop or the wig shop.

The point is any and all property is more valuable than a Black life. If you get a felony for stealing a 40 inch tv and paid administrative leave for killing a black child and no jail time, the social and structural contract has been broken so egregiously that it is silly to expect the aggrieved party, in this case Black folks, to up hold a social contract in which they have no partner! The people in this community have no partner and that includes the business that the shop at but don't own!

This is not an individual making a choice to kill a child. The police are an arm of the State. So these are state sanctioned killings. Guess what... WE ARE THE STATE!

A society's rule of law is supposed to provide protection to it citizens and in return citizens are expected to promote stability and order. If there is no protection than no order, or in other words no justice, no peace. There is no exemption in that statement for business owners.

When we have a framework that sees society as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability, then we have rest.
When people are left out of the society

1. Do Black people respect Black life?

2. Do we place a higher value on property, material items?

I would argue that if there was no threat of community wide unrest more black men would die at the hands of police.

That is really america's worst nightmare.

It's not about us because we aren't a monolith. Whether or not we respect life is irrelevant because CLEARLY THEY DON'T GIVE A FUCK. Say what you want about black people respecting life but WE aren't gunning down innocent youth with reckless abandon while in positions of power.

People kill with this need for self discovery in the face of a tragedy. Let's not lose focus on THIS FUCK SHIT that's happening right now. We can go on a spirit walk later my dude.

>1. Do Black people respect Black life?

Being that there are 30 million of us, the vast majority of whom have never taken a life and would never take a life, I would say yes.
When Black individuals do decided to kill they go to jail, where society says murder should go. Police do not go to jail.

>2. Do we place a higher value on property, material items?

You're Black. Do you? Would you kill a nigga for a cigarette? Would you kill a child for walking in your ritzy neighborhood and lowering your property value? Most Black people wouldn't and do not. How many killers are there really?

Let's look at Chicago for a second. In 2010 there were about 800,000 Black people in Chi and there were 436 murders....
For shits and giggles, lets say all the murders were "Black on Black" as if there is such a thing. Let's also say that each murder was committed by one person and there were no multiples. Even under that assumption which would yield the highest percentage, that's not even 1% of 1% of black people that kill.
So no, Black people do not value property and material items more than Black life.

>3. Is destroying/looting businesses making Black life better
>where they live?

You gotta child right?
I'd argue that if police can come into any Black neighborhood and kill any child in the street without provocation, it can't get no worse. Looting is a release of long standing disappointments and grievances with society, not just the police but all of society! People feel aggrieved, dismissed and left out of the protection of the state and rewards of capitalism. So looting doesn't have to make life better. That's not its purpose. Looting's purposes is to say the following, "if I follow the rule of law and social contract, and it doesn't afford me any protection then why should I follow it?"

>4. Does destroying businesses/property stop police from
>harassing/killing Black men?

Does marching, voting, or tweeting?
Listen, without the fear that negros would riot, you'd probably still be segregated. As much as people are in love with the civil rights narrative of non-violence, much of the ugly truth about the amount of race riots that occurred before during and after civil rights is conveniently made absent during Black history month. It was most definitely a factor. Non-violence only works as a means of persuasion when it can be chosen as an alternative to violence.

....then don't chump out and tear up your own neighborhood. Go to theirs and handle business. All of the effective leaders who were about change for black people put their lives on the line. Tearing up your own neighborhood isn't brave when the enemy's residency is still safe. Niggas wanna get aggressive but don't wanna risk their lives for the cause. More reason to scoff at this dumb riot.

....where do you see anyone being more concerned about buildings? Those of us who have been opposed to the riots oppose it because those fools are tearing up their own neighborhood. Something that hurts THEM in the long run. Already some black business owners are suffering. A number of black people that worked in those local businesses are suffering due to job loss because of the rioting idiots. We have said numerous times that if you're really about the cause, take the rioting to the enemy and riot in their backyard instead of pussing out and doing it in your own backyard. I can't see how you severely dense niggas can't see that.

She can easily tell me this stuff. She talked about one of the black owned businesses that was messed up. I actually been in that area during my visits. I also pointed out how a number of black people have lost their livelihood because of the riots. So you supporting the riot in that specific neighborhood is the same as supporting black people in that neighborhood losing their means of income.

Don't talk to me about being scared when you're supporting the fools doing all of the rioting in their own backyard instead of directly confronting the culprits. Now please, find the nearest bridge or cliff and jump off it.

I'm not just talking about the Brown shooting. There are many others, not to mention the beating of two black women by police in recent months. Police brutality is a MAJOR national issue and the President hasn't made a statement/speech. I think the question is more than fair.

i heard a statement. it was likely issued by some corner of the White House that handles those statements as a matter of rote. they probably have them written out well in advance - like the way big news joints handle celeb obits. they can print them quickly b/c they're pre-written.

i said last night that i wished someone at the WH who's the master of communication and has to approve every statement that's issued (hint: it ain't the prez himself) had held up the Williams statement in the wake of the Brown situation and the ongoing tension nationwide due to it since the WH wasn't prepared to make a statement in the Brown situation. i wanted them to hold it so as to avoid the prez (or his brand, really) having to deal w/that sentiment. b/c though i get it i don't think it's fair to blame the man himself for what's likely the operation of an institution. however, the institution has his name on it and so the 'buck stops w/him'.

still, i doubt that was a personal note written by the prez. and i'm only talking about the statement i heard. i haven't seen or heard any actual speech.

fuck you.

I do both, and it doesn't make sense to compare. The planning and execution for a fluffy obit statement versus that for a speech on a controversial social issue aren't even close.

that was some really white shit to do.

HIS feds are investigating what happened in this case. what part of that do y'all not get?

even if the president came out and says, 'YES that police officer that killed that kid deserves to die and i hope he burns in HELL' on some sam jack shit, is that going to help? particularly at this stage?

you've never seen mayors or public officials, even when the cops did some foul shit, have to carefully parse their words so that they don't taint a potential jury pool or create the impression that the investigation is going to be prejudiced against the officer?

IF an investigation shows what we all believe, which is that the cop murdered this young man, and IF the local po-po fucks it up, and IF it then comes down to the justice dept, as it often does in such cases, to bring the cop up on civil rights violations, do you not think that a presidential statement is not gonna be attempted to be used by the cop's defense to get off?

peace & blessings,

See: Detroit water situation -

http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/detroit-mayor-issues-plan-dealing-water-crisis

Over the past several months, thousands of Detroit residents have lost their access to running water. Thousands more protesters have taken to the streets, demanding that the city turn the water back on. And now Detroit’s elected officials are implementing a plan intended to slow the pace of the shutoffs.

Duggan acknowledged the popular outcry in his statement to the press, saying it had been “a very emotional few weeks in this town, as everybody knows.”

Protests ALONE didn't do the job. Social media helped highlight this situation, too. But it's wrong to think non-violent, street protests have NO value.

The past is my foundation, not my preoccupation.

For example, if something were to come out of this Ferguson incident, I would hope it wouldn't be just focused with the police force in STL...otherwise, 10 years down the line (and I'm being ridiculously optimistic here) we'll all be right back here when the same sort of brutality happens in a different city.

This post. This post right here is what keeps us down.

Do we all agree police brutality is terrible, yes.
Do we agree its a human thing not just a Black thing and therefore something all Americans should be concerned with? Yes.

Then why are we in here with our good over educated, employed, financially savvy and we ure grown asses arguing over tactics?

While the young adults and teens are actually on the streets?

We should be helping these young ppl in Ferguson get organized

Helping spread the word to our own individual cities and areas...spread this shit!

We can sit here and talk and let another opportunity to really dismantle this prison industrial complex go by

Or

We can use social media and our own networks to get sister protests popping in NYC, DC, Philly, LA, atl, Chicago etc

I mean do y'all not see how we sound right now?

does it really matter?

homie...Crump didn't represent any of the parties in the Trayvon Martin case. he represented the family in its interests which were collateral to the actual murder case - the family were not parties in the case. the only parties were the State of Florida and George Zimmerman. a county prosecutor represented the State and George hired private attorneys to represent him.

Police: Officer Shoots, Critically Wounds Suspect Near Ferguson
August 13, 2014 5:32 AM

Ferguson, Mo. (CBS News/CBS St. Louis/AP) — Police in St. Louis County say an officer shot and critically wounded a suspect early Wednesday near Ferguson, the suburb of the city of St. Louis where a fatal weekend police shooting sparked two nights of violent protests, reports CBS St. Louis affiliate KMOV-TV.

The station quotes St. Louis County police spokesman Brian Schellman as saying officers responded to a report of four men wearing ski masks armed with shotguns, as well of reports of shots fired in the area.

When they arrived, he says, they found more than two dozen suspects fleeing on foot.

At one point, an officer confronted a suspect who, Schellman says, pulled a handgun on the officer.

“In fear for his life, the officer shot the subject,” Schellman continued. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The suspect’s handgun was recovered at the scene.

Separately, said Schellman, one person was injured in a drive-by shooting in Ferguson early Wednesday.

He said the incident involved several males in a black sedan, and a female was shot once in the head. He said she was taken to a hospital with injuries that did not appear life-threatening.

Schellman said the shooting occurred in the same vicinity as the protests over the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Meanwhile, the Rev. Al Sharpton pressed police Tuesday to release the name of the officer who shot Brown, an unarmed black teenager, and he pleaded for calm after two nights of violent disturbances over Brown’s death.

There were more protests in Ferguson Tuesday night into early Wednesday, but they didn’t turn violent, witnesses said.

At one point, police used tear gas to disperse a crowd, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Police said death threats prompted them to withhold the name of the officer, who was placed on administrative leave after shooting Brown.

Investigators have released few details, saying only that a scuffle unfolded after the officer asked Brown and another teen to get out of the street. At some point, the officer’s weapon fired inside a patrol car, police said.

“The local authorities have put themselves in a position – hiding names and not being transparent – where people will not trust anything but an objective investigation,” Sharpton said during a news conference in St. Louis at which he was joined by Brown’s parents.

He also echoed pleas for peaceful protests by the NAACP and Brown’s father, Michael Brown Sr., who told the crowd, “I need all of us to come together and do this right. … No violence.”

President Barack Obama also urged calm, saying people must comfort each other “in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds.” Obama called Brown’s death “heartbreaking.”

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, whose appearance was unannounced, told a standing-room only crowd at a community forum Tuesday night that the shooting feels “like an old wound torn fresh” in a nation still struggling with race relations.

KMOV says Nixon didn’t answer reporters’ questions about whether he’d call out the National Guard if the civil unrest resumed in Ferguson.

The forum, held at a church, was organized as an alternative response to two nights of unrest in which crowds burned stores, vandalized vehicles, assaulted reporters and taunted officers. Ferguson’s mayor and police chief also attended the meeting, and were welcomed with applause.

Earlier in the day, Police Chief Tom Jackson said he had decided against releasing the officer’s name Tuesday after death threats were called in to police and City Hall and posted on social media. Jackson said it could be weeks before he releases the name.

“If we come out and say, ‘It was this officer,’ then he immediately becomes a target,” Jackson said. “We’re taking the threats seriously.”

The officer has been with the force for about six years and was on a routine patrol when he encountered the two young men, Jackson said.

Police have not disclosed the race of the officer, but witnesses said he was white. Brown was black.

The Ferguson police force has 53 officers, three of whom are black. Jackson said the city has had trouble recruiting and retaining black officers.

The fullest account of Brown’s death so far has come from Dorian Johnson, who said he was walking home from a convenience store with Brown when they were approached by an officer in a squad car who, using expletives, ordered them to move to the sidewalk.

In the hours after the shooting, Johnson told news crews that he and Brown had kept walking and explained to the officer they were near their destination. The officer then reversed his car “to where it almost hit us.”

The officer, Johnson said, tried to open his door, but he was so close to the men that it “ricocheted” back. Johnson said the officer then reached through the window, “grabbed my friend around the neck” and tried to pull him into the car. The officer then reportedly pulled out his weapon and said, “‘I’ll shoot you,’ or ‘I’m going to shoot,'” Johnson said.

When the officer opened fire, Brown was hit and started to bleed, Johnson said. Johnson ran to hide behind a car.

Brown “kept running, and he told me to keep running because he feared for me, too,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the officer pursued Brown with his weapon drawn and fired again.

When Brown felt that shot, he turned around and put his hands in the air and started to get down on the ground. But the officer kept firing, Johnson said.

“And my friend died. He didn’t say anything to him. He just stood over and he’s shooting.”

Authorities have not commented directly on Johnson’s account.

Another witness, Phillip Walker, told the AP he was on the porch of an apartment complex overlooking the scene when he saw a white officer with Brown, who was “giving up in the sense of raising his arms and being subdued.” Walker said the officer then “stood over him and shot him.”

Police have said there is no security or police video of the confrontation.

St. Louis County police are leading the investigation into Brown’s death, and the Federal Aviation Administration agreed to order flight restrictions over Ferguson until Monday to give police helicopters unfettered access to that airspace. Those restrictions were lifted Tuesday.

the original post Still reeks of self hate to me. I also never said anything about rioting and was accused of it. The OP has still never owned up to placing the onus strictly on 'unruly niggas' but no one else called him out for it so *shrugs* I stand by everything I said to duke. Could care less what my 'okp rep' is as he mentioned its awful telling that he never addressed what I spoke about but chose to go down a different lane.

As Bin said above this is exactly why we are divided as a ppl this post is a perfect example of that. I'll strictly post about comics and books cuz after being here from the beginning, if calling folk out for their own verbiage is wrong then whatever. Also, sure (I havent read through the entire thing) that this isnt directed squarely at me but I just wanted to say something since the 'wordsmith' has oh so totally put me in my place. LOL Just stopped replying. Peace

No group has stopped murder amongst themselves. Whites kill whites, Sikhs kill Sikhs, men kill men... humans murder each other.

Now some groups do it less but it wasn't by the sheer will to stop murdering each other, but in combination with improved living standards and greater hope within their communities.

We certainly share some of the responsibility for improving our own condition, but it has to be with the support of others. The "We must fix our own house first!" argument Farrakhan is making sounds like a call to personal responsbility and black solidarity but I think it absolves the rest of American society from doing it's part.

it lets those who are killing us, regardless of the race, off the hook.

the onus is not on Black people to love themselves.
the onus is on killers to stop killing Black people.

even if every Black person on Earth united and had the highest self-esteem among human beings

when shit like this goes down? it ain't because they were self-loving or otherwise respectable.

it's because those motherfuckers need someone to mow down to exert power.

we need to hold murderers accountable. they're the one setting the "price of life", not the victims.

the baby can't talk so he has to real way or power to express themselves besides having a fit.
Black people have been oppressed and killed by cops for so many years and powerless to stop it.
So what else is there left to do besides go fucking nuts? Express that anger on thing people value more than Black life.
Now it's completely illogical for the average person. But I kinda get it. I don't completely condone it.
However not even having a Black person in the highest office of the land can't change their actions towards us.
The notion that we needed to gain more power to stop this type of thing have proven to be a mtyh.
We hopeless, so fuck it is the general attitude about it. You can't get people to value things when they aren't valued themselves.

By Wesley Lowery August 13 at 11:18 PM

FERGUSON, Mo. — For the past week in Ferguson, reporters have been using the McDonald’s a few blocks from the scene of Michael Brown’s shooting as a staging area. Demonstrations have blown up each night nearby. But inside there’s WiFi and outlets, so it’s common for reporters to gather there.

That was the case Wednesday. My phone was just about to die, so as I charged it, I used the time to respond to people on Twitter and do a little bit of a Q&A since I wasn’t out there covering the protests.

As I sat there, many armed officers came in — some who were dressed as normal officers, others who were dressed with more gear.

Initially, both Ryan Reilly of the Huffington Post and I were asked for identification. I was wearing my lanyard, but Ryan asked why he had to show his ID. They didn’t press the point, but one added that if we called 911, no one would answer.

Then they walked away. Moments later, the police reemerged, telling us that we had to leave. I pulled my phone out and began recording video.

An officer with a large weapon came up to me and said, “Stop recording.”

I said, “Officer, do I not have the right to record you?”

He backed off but told me to hurry up. So I gathered my notebook and pens with one hand while recording him with the other hand.

As I exited, I saw Ryan to my left, having a similar argument with two officers. I recorded him, too, and that angered the officer. As I made my way toward the door, the officers gave me conflicting information.

One instructed me to exit to my left. As I turned left, another officer emerged, blocking my path.

“Go another way,” he said.

As I turned, my backpack, which was slung over one shoulder, began to slip. I said, “Officers, let me just gather my bag.” As I did, one of them said, “Okay, let’s take him.”

Multiple officers grabbed me. I tried to turn my back to them to assist them in arresting me. I dropped the things from my hands.

“My hands are behind my back,” I said. “I’m not resisting. I’m not resisting.” At which point one officer said: “You’re resisting. Stop resisting.”

That was when I was most afraid — more afraid than of the tear gas and rubber bullets.

As they took me into custody, the officers slammed me into a soda machine, at one point setting off the Coke dispenser. They put plastic cuffs on me, then they led me out the door.

I could see Ryan still talking to an officer. I said: “Ryan, tweet that they’re arresting me, tweet that they’re arresting me.”

He didn’t have an opportunity, because he was arrested as well.

The officers led us outside to a police van. Inside, there was a large man sitting on the floor between the two benches. He began screaming: “I can’t breathe! Call a paramedic! Call a paramedic!”

Ryan and I asked the officers if they intended to help the man. They said he was fine. The screaming went on for the 10 to 15 minutes we stood outside the van.

“I’m going to die!” he screamed. “I’m going to die! I can’t breathe! I’m going to die!”

Eventually a police car arrived. A woman — with a collar identifying her as a member of the clergy — sat in the back. Ryan and I crammed in next to her, and we took the three-minute ride to the Ferguson Police Department. The woman sang hymns throughout the ride.

During this time, we asked the officers for badge numbers. We asked to speak to a supervising officer. We asked why we were being detained. We were told: trespassing in a McDonald’s.

“I hope you’re happy with yourself,” one officer told me. And I responded: “This story’s going to get out there. It’s going to be on the front page of The Washington Post tomorrow.”

And he said, “Yeah, well, you’re going to be in my jail cell tonight.”

Once at the station, we were processed, our pockets emptied. No mug shots. They removed our restraints and put us in a holding cell. Ryan was able to get ahold of his dad. I called my mom, but I couldn’t get through. I couldn’t remember any phone numbers.

We were in there for what felt like 10 or 15 minutes. Then the processing officer came in.

“Who’s media?” he asked.

We said we were. And the officer said we were both free to go. We asked to speak to a commanding officer. We asked to see an arrest report. No report, the officer told us, and no, they wouldn’t provide any names.

I asked if there would ever be a report. He came back with a case number and said a report would be available in a week or two.

“The chief thought he was doing you two a favor,” he said.

The Ferguson Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Lowery’s detention.

The following is a statement on the incident from Washington Post Executive Editor Martin D. Baron:

Wesley has briefed us on what occurred, and there was absolutely no justification for his
arrest.

He was illegally instructed to stop taking video of officers. Then he followed officers’ instructions to leave a McDonald’s — and after contradictory instructions on how to exit, he was slammed against a soda machine and then handcuffed. That behavior was wholly unwarranted and an assault on the freedom of the press to cover the news. The physical risk to Wesley himself is obvious and outrageous.

After being placed in a holding cell, he was released with no charges and no explanation. He was denied information about the names and badge numbers of those who arrested him.

We are relieved that Wesley is going to be OK. We are appalled by the conduct of police officers involved.

and what folks are saying on social media don't match at all.

The lady who got shot is said to have been shot by police with rubber bullets and not a drive by. This don't make no sort of sense man. I don't know who to believe.

320. "St. Louis County Police to Be Removed From Ferguson (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-08-14/st-louis-county-police-to-be-removed-from-ferguson-clay.html

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon will announce that St. Louis County law enforcement will be relieved of duty in Ferguson, which has been roiled by protests after the shooting death by police of an unarmed teenager, according to Representative William Lacy Clay.

“The governor just called me, and he’s on his way to St. Louis now to announce he’s taking away St. Louis County police out of the situation,” Clay, a Missouri Democrat, said in a telephone interview. He added that Nixon may ask the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to step in.

Clay said that he has been urging U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to “take over the entire situation because we will not get justice for Michael Brown and his family and friends if the St. Louis County police and prosecutor have a say.”

Police and protesters in the St. Louis suburb are engaged in a standoff entering its sixth day in the wake of the Aug. 9 shooting of Brown. Police say the 18-year-old had fought the officer over his weapon, while Ferguson residents say Brown was shot while putting his hands up in surrender.

Obama Briefed

President Barack Obama, who is vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, hasn’t reacted publicly to what’s happening in Ferguson since Aug. 12, when he issued a written statement calling the death “heartbreaking.”

Obama was briefed last night on what’s going on there by Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser, and Holder, both of whom are also on the resort island, White House Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz said in an e-mail yesterday.

The president is scheduled to speak to reporters at about 12:15 p.m. New York time, the White House said.

The president had another briefing on the topic scheduled for this morning and “senior staff will continue to update the president as needed,” Schultz said.

A White House spokesman referred questions about the situation to the Justice Department. The FBI on Aug. 11 opened an investigation into the Brown shooting, with Holder calling for a “fulsome review.”

Clay said federal and state authorities have waited too long to take control of the situation.

“They are relying on the St. Louis County authorities to do the right thing,” Clay said. “Now the governor realizes that they’re not going to do the right thing.”

‘Police Terrorism’

About 2 a.m. today, a group of more than 50 police officers in full protective gear drove three black armored vehicles to the Ferguson police department. Officers pointed guns at the crowd and told everyone to disperse immediately or face arrest. Protesters, who raised their hands and dropped to their knees, later departed, with some shouting expletives at the police.

“This is police terrorism at its finest,” said Kyra Rayford, a 24-year-old from St. Louis who was waving a sign across the street from the police department. “They’ve been using unnecessary aggression and force. They’re violating our civil rights.”

The officer’s name hasn’t been released.

Police officers in military-style regalia yesterday fired tear gas at groups of protesters, and reporters from the Washington Post and The Huffington Post were arrested.

‘No Justification’

Wesley Lowery, a reporter for the Washington Post, wrote that he was handcuffed by officers in a McDonald’s restaurant after attempting to videotape them. Lowery and Huffington Post reporter Ryan Reilly were briefly detained, then released without charges, he wrote on the Washington Post’s website.

Marty Baron, the executive editor of the Washington Post, said he was “appalled” at how reporters were being treated.

“There was absolutely no justification for his arrest,” Baron said in a statement.

Nixon, who canceled a trip to the state fair to head to Ferguson, said he planned to urge both the police and residents to refrain from violence.

“The worsening situation in Ferguson is deeply troubling, and does not represent who we are as Missourians or as Americans,” Nixon, a 58-year-old Democrat, said in a statement. “While we all respect the solemn responsibility of our law enforcement officers to protect the public, we must also safeguard the rights of Missourians to peaceably assemble and the rights of the press to report on matters of public concern.”

Or I'll edit to say, has it happened any time recently? I can't remember seeing police officers being held accountable for violent suppression of protests, at least in my lifetime. Granted, this is a pretty low form of accountability, but at least it's something.

but i learned that the folks who ran the Black Civil Rights Movement wanted to goad the police into acting badly in front of cameras so as to expose police brutality against protestors for the whole world to see. and by 'goad' i mean peaceful protesting. that's how we ended up w/pictures like this:
