"Hannibal Burress decided to remind everybody that Cosby is a rapist"

and it cause someone in the crowd to throw up.

http://www.phillymag.com/ticket/2014/10/17/hannibal-buress-bill-cosby-rapist/

Last night at his late night show at the Trocadero, comedian Hannibal Buress did an extended bit about Philadelphia native Bill Cosby, calling him a rapist. Cosby has been accused of drugging and sexually assaulting multiple women, including Barbara Bowman in Philadelphia magazine. He has not, however, been publicly accused of rape. The above recording starts about 15-20 seconds into it.

“It’s even worse because Bill Cosby has the fuckin’ smuggest old black man persona that I hate,” Buress said. “He gets on TV, ‘Pull your pants up black people, I was on TV in the 80s! I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom!’ Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches.”

"I guess I want to just at least make it weird for you to watch Cosby Show reruns," Buress says later. "I've done this bit on stage and people think I'm making it up.... when you leave here, google 'Bill Cosby rape.' That shit has more results than 'Hannibal Buress.'"

Buress — who has done stand-up for years and is a regular on Comedy Central's Broad City — praised Bill Cosby: Himself in GQ, and noted how hard it is not to curse on stage. He specifically praised Cosby's bit on drugs, which is one of the funniest parts of that special.

Apparently there was a guy projectile vomiting in the back rows while I was performing in Philly yesterday. I was super oblivious.

— Hannibal Buress (@hannibalburess) October 17, 2014

Immediately following Buress's Cosby bit, a man in front of the bar downstairs at the Troc threw up all over, causing such a commotion I first thought people had gotten into a fight over Bill Cosby.

Not even when committed by one our most beloved icons. It calls manipulators a lie when they tell victims that no one will believe them. It also helps survivors - in case Cosby created any who haven't come forward and any who may be similarly situated.

This is about generational butt-hurtnedness over the pull-your-pants-up thing (and I expect OKP to lap it up, 3-4 years after pullpantsgate). I like Hannibal and Cosby, but this isn't to help a damn thing.

I agree there is some glee in this bc Cosby set himself for a generational takedown with that grumpy gramps routine he's worked for the last dozen yrs or so, but that's not all there is going on with this. It's also about informing ppl about a(n accused) rapist in our midst who's never paid for his (alleged) crime.

That's how we hot here. Plus we have ran the Bill Cosby issue into the ground plenty of times and there was some temporary outrage until the next issue came along.

http://www.newsweek.com/barbara-bowman-speaks-about-bill-cosby-sexual-abuse-allegations-228837

How did you know Bill Cosby?

I was a 17-year-old model and up-and-coming actress in Denver, Colorado. My agent knew Bill. I was told that he wanted to scout some new talent -- if we were lucky, we would be groomed to go to New York and get more solid training so we could move up the ladder, maybe eventually get to audition for the Cosby Show.

Bill came to town, and my agent set up a meeting for us. I was told that Bill wanted to get to know me and my acting abilities and skill level, and wanted to know what sort of marketing ability I had. He had me come meet him whenever he was in town to do meet-and-greets, and he’d give me acting lessons. Then, he started flying me around to major cities to events to get accustomed to being around celebrities, and, he said, to see if I was worthy of mentoring.

What was it like having Bill Cosby as your mentor?

It was overwhelming. It was surreal and exciting, but it was also scary. He worked me over emotionally and psychologically. He broke me down and really preyed on my insecurities… I had no father figure in my life, so he zoomed right in on that and tried to make me feel as though he loved me like a father would.

I was young, wide-eyed and impressionable, and he would play games with my head, and manipulate me into believing that he cared about me, that I didn’t have anyone who cared as much as he cared, that I needed to trust him, that I had trust issues and that he would help me overcome those, because they would limit me as an actress. He told me I needed to give into him 100 percent, because he was investing in me, he believed in me.

When was the first time you felt uncomfortable around him?

None of the abuse or drugging happened until I was 18… But on our very first meeting together, which occurred in the conference room at a nightclub in Denver, he led me through an acting exercise. First, he told me to go to the bathroom and wet my hair down. Then, he told me to sit in a chair, close my eyes, and act out a monologue as if I was really intoxicated. And he was touching my neck and stroking my hair.

I felt absolutely terrified. I was so new to the business and this was my first experience with a celebrity of such power, so I thought, “Wow, maybe this is what you are supposed to do. This is about learning how to be vulnerable in a scene, and if anyone would know best, it would be Bill Cosby.” I didn’t want to disappoint him or for him to think I couldn’t follow directions. So I gave it my all.

What else can you remember?

I was assaulted a number of times from age 18 to 19. Cosby would warn me before out-of-town trips, "You aren't going to fight me this time, are you?"

Once in Reno, Nevada, he flew me out for a celebrity ski classic. He got me in a hotel room and fed me a lot of alcohol. He pinned me down in his suite on the couch, and he had me masturbate him. He really intimidated me, and I panicked.

From them on, I would be praying and begging to God that it was in my imagination, it didn’t happen. I’d sit on the plane and say “Please God, please God, this is really about my career--I’m lucky.” And then I’d get there and he would just intimidate me and make me so scared...

The first time I was drugged for sure was in New York, when he invited me to dinner at his apartment. There was a chef, a butler; we had dinner, it was all fine. I had one glass of wine and then I blacked out. I woke up throwing up in the toilet, and he was standing over me, pulling my hair out of my face. I was wearing a white t-shirt that wasn’t mine, and he was in a white robe.

I think the final time I was assaulted by him was in Atlantic City. He took me there for a show and got me very drunk. Later, lost my luggage, so I was on the phone with the concierge and had an absolute fit that I was on the phone, and went ballistic. The next morning, he summoned me into his room and started berating me and calling me names and yelling at me, telling me I had embarrassed him, and he threw me on the bed and blocked me with his elbow and got on top of me and started taking his pants off and I was screaming and crying and begging him to leave me alone and I fought so hard and I was screaming so loud that he got mad and threw me aside and got away from me, and that was it.

I was ditched. I was dropped like a hot potato by my agent. I was thrown out of my housing. They pulled the plug on me and said I had embarrassed .

Cosby said “I better never ever hear your name or see your face ever again.”

How did you feel?

I was afraid he could directly affect my career by blacklisting me in the casting world and labeling me a troublemaker. I had no idea what sort of repercussions I would be exposed to; I knew I could be shut up real quick, and it didn’t feel good. I was afraid he was going to hurt me. I was afraid that because of his power and influence I would never be believed. He was Dr. Huxtable at that time. Everyone revered Bill Cosby. He could do no wrong. He was America's dad...

Did you tell anyone?

I told a friend, who took me to a lawyer… He laughed me out of the office. He thought it was absolutely preposterous... He treated me as if I was delusional.

Why did you finally speak out?

I heard about case on the news in 2004, when I was living in Phoenix. By then, I had been married for several years and had two young children at home. It enraged me that they were painting such an ugly picture of her being a liar and a slut. I went on a crusade to be heard--I started to call everybody I could possibly think of who would listen to me.

I reached Andrea’s lawyer and I found out that 12 other women were involved in this. At first, she recommended that we all stay Jane Does, and some girls preferred that, but I said, “Hell no--I have been hiding this--it has been a secret--for too long. I am not going to sit in silence anymore.”

I want to be the voice for women who are too afraid to speak up. If I show the courage, maybe that will encourage others to do the same thing. This man cannot get away with this. He cannot use his power and his money to abuse and rape young women and hide under this veil of wealth and celebrity status and intimidate us any longer. So I put my name out there.

My only motivation was to support Andrea; my statute of limitations had long run out. There was nothing in it for me monetarily. It was strictly to have my voice heard and my story told.

It was also because I needed to heal. It is probably the biggest demon that I live with today.

Were you disappointed that Andrea Constand took a settlement?

I was disappointed because I knew that would shut everybody else up, including Andrea. And although I am grateful she was able to have closure for her own growth, it sends the message to other victims that they can be shut up.

Why do you think people find it so hard to believe celebrities can be sexual assaulters?

The media creates this idealized image of celebrities: that they are untouchable, that they’re not one of us... I don’t think people want to believe it; to believe would shatter the illusion.

fuck you.

and she can be easily dismissed since it's way too late for a prosecutor to secure a conviction against Cos in her case. so yeah, it's gonna be her word and that's all. and that's convenient for ppl who want to dismiss her and continue singing Cos's praise. absolutely. and that's one of the reasons it's important for her word to be spread - so other survivors understand some of the consequence of their silence. if they don't speak up ASAP their rapist gets away w/it. b/c when they speak up yrs later ppl like you will dismiss them and prosecutors are left w/o good evidence other than the survivor's word. and while 'she said' is enough to convict in a court of law, it's tough to prove a case w/just 'she said'. and so it's important to cooperate w/a criminal investigation forthwith or else risk living forever knowing the rapist got away w/the crime.

fuck you.

in these cases - only one of the women has resolved her case w/a civil settlement. the rest have not. and i've not heard about any attempts to blackmail Mr. Cosby.

but yes, none of the accusers came forward w/their allegations w/in the statutory period. the fact that they didn't doesn't necessarily mean the events they claim didn't occur but it does mean there's little or no chance Mr. Cosby will face a criminal charge based on the accusers' claims.

in the first case, MJ's father was the one that
accused MJ-- not the boy.

the prosecution couldn't get a testimony from the alleged victim.
then MJ's insurance company settled the case.

10 yrs later, after scouring the world for other victims,
the prosecution finally got another accuser
that had more credibility issues than the first.

that's 2 accusers.
that didn't tell similar stories.
vs 14 accusers that told similar stories.

i don't get the parallel.

The other thing...is the lack of coverage his accusers have received. MJ's accusers were getting hi-reward media response. A lot of people that love Bill Cosby aren't even aware of these accusations. So 14 seems like a lot in the absence of the media circus that followed MJ's criminal rumors. Similar stories? Different parts of the country? All victims share a similar profile?

And the nature of it....if he was guilty once....it's inferable that he was a serial offender. Another consistent detail about the accusations...they all involve a knock-out drug/roofie.

Bill Cosby Under Fire

By Alex Tresniowski
The Comedian Settles a Case Accusing Him of Sexual Abuse—but Other Women Make Similar Claims

Bill Cosby takes the stage, plops in a chair and kicks off his shoes. Nearly 3,000 college students packed into the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, N.Y., cheer wildly. For two hours on Nov. 10, one of America's most beloved entertainers treats the crowd to his trademark brand of curmudgeonly comedy, much of it having to do with the perils of being young in a challenging world. "For college seniors there should be a week of being allowed to cry," says Cosby, 69. "Just break down and cry because you are scared and don't know what's next."

What Cosby never mentioned was the civil lawsuit he settled just two days earlier with Andrea Constand, 32, a former Temple University employee who claimed Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her in his Philadelphia-area mansion in 2004. Constand's lawyers Dolores Troiani and Bebe Kivitz ended up with 13 witnesses, most referred to in court documents as "Jane Does," who came forward voluntarily with strikingly similar claims of drugging and or abuse by Cosby. Terms of the settlement, reached before any of the women could testify, were not disclosed. But PEOPLE reporters have interviewed five of the women and share three of their stories now.

As in so many cases alleging sexual assault, these women make imperfect witnesses. They are talking about events two or three decades old. Many of their recollections are fragmentary, and in some cases, they are not even sure what happened between them and Cosby, though that is not unusual in cases where a possible date-rape drug is involved. None of the women ever contacted police with their stories, either at the time of the alleged assaults or in the years leading up to Constand's revelations, and two of the five women reached by PEOPLE allowed Cosby to pay part or all of their travel and/or living expenses for some time. Three accepted cash from him years after the incidents, and two even went on to have consensual relationships with him.

But none of them stand to profit from suing Cosby for monetary damages; the statute of limitations on all their charges has expired. And their stories, which take place in several cities and span two decades, illustrate the same pattern of behavior, primarily the accusation that Cosby, then one of the most powerful entertainers alive, targeted them because they were vulnerable and gained their trust by promising to help their careers. PEOPLE contacted Cosby to get his response to the allegations; through his longtime publicist David Brokaw, Cosby said he had no comment.

The stories these women tell paint a disturbing picture of one of the country's most likeable comedians: a man many Americans know as Cliff Huxtable, America's favorite dad on The Cosby Show (the No. 1 show on TV for five straight years), and a man who remains a crusader for education and personal responsibility (see box). In 2002 Cosby was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Although he admitted to an affair with Shawn Upshaw in 1997 (Upshaw's daughter Autumn Jackson claimed Cosby was her father, which was never proven, and she then served time for extortion), he has been married since 1964 to Camille, 62. The Cosbys had five children; son Ennis was killed in an attempted robbery in 1997.

Andrea Constand met Cosby when she was director of operations for the women's basketball program at Temple, Cosby's alma mater. In 2005 she told police that one year earlier, Cosby had invited her to his Cheltenham home, gave her pills when she complained she was stressed and, after she got dizzy, began "touching her breast and placing her hand on his penis," according to a police report. Cosby's attorney Walter M. Phillips Jr. called the charges "preposterous," and Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor, Jr., citing "insufficient credible and admissible evidence," decided not to press criminal charges.

But news reports about Constand's subsequent civil suit are what coaxed Barbara Bowman, 39, out of hiding. The Denver-area native—who first told her story to Philadelphia magazine in November—was an 18-year-old model and aspiring actress in 1985, when her agent Jo Farrell arranged for her to meet Cosby. "It was overwhelmingly exciting," remembers Bowman, whose first meeting with Cosby took place at a comedy club in Denver. "He questioned me quite extensively about my personal history, my relationship with my father. My father abandoned me when I was 14." She says now, "In hindsight I look back and I realize what he was doing. He was getting information of where my vulnerabilities lay." In that first meeting, she claims Cosby gave her an acting exercise that struck her as disturbing: "He wanted me to imagine fully that I was inebriated, that I was out of control, drunk or drugged.... He wanted me to just slump in my chair, and he wanted my limbs to be limp, and he would whisper in my ear what he wanted." After Farrell arranged for her to move to New York City, Cosby continued to mentor her and even introduced her to costars Phylicia Rashad and Lisa Bonet. "I trusted him totally," says Bowman's mother, Pat Hubbard, 68. "Who wouldn't trust and love Dr. Huxtable?"

It was in a hotel in Reno, claims Bowman, that Cosby assaulted her one night in 1986. "He took my hand and his hand over it, and he masturbated with his hand over my hand," says Bowman, who, although terrified, kept quiet about the incident and continued as Cosby's protégé because, she says, "Who's gonna believe this? He was a powerful man. He was like the president." Before long she was alone with Cosby again in his Manhattan townhouse; she was given a glass of red wine, and "the next thing I know, I'm sick and I'm nauseous and I'm delusional and I'm limp and ... I can't think straight.... And I just came to, and I'm wearing a T-shirt that wasn't mine, and he was in a white robe."

A month or two later, she was in Atlantic City and says she was given another glass of red wine and felt "completely doped up again." Confused, Bowman somehow made it back to her room, but the next day Cosby summoned her to his suite. After she arrived, Bowman says, Cosby "threw me on the bed and braced his arm under my neck so I couldn't move my head, and he started trying to take his clothes off. I remember all the clinking of his belt buckle. And he was trying to take my pants down, and I was trying to keep them on." Bowman says that not long after she resisted the assault, Cosby cut off contact with her and had her escorted to the airport for a flight back to Denver. She didn't tell authorities about what happened, but she did approach an attorney who "wouldn't take it seriously," says Margo Singagliese, 52, the friend who went with her to see the lawyer.

Bowman vowed not to let her experiences with Cosby ruin her life. The stay-at-home mom is married to a partner in a private asset-management firm; they have a young son and daughter and live in a Phoenix suburb. Still, when Bowman heard about Constand's lawsuit, "I said, 'I'll be damned if I'm gonna sit in silence anymore.'" She contacted authorities and got in touch with Constand's lawyer.

By then another accuser had already come forward. Tamara Green, 58, a former trial attorney who first told her story to the Philadelphia Daily News, says she was a young aspiring model when a doctor she knew introduced her to Cosby in 1970. One day Cosby asked her to lunch, and when "I told him I felt awful, he gave me what he said were Contac," Green recalls. "Suddenly I felt like I was stoned out of my mind." She says Cosby took her to her apartment and "started taking off my clothes. He had his pants down and was all over me." Green resisted and Cosby left. She went on to build a successful career as an attorney and is now only handling appeals. In 2004 the State Bar of California disciplined her for attorney misconduct. "People wonder why I didn't come forward sooner," says Green, who is now divorced with one grown son. "There's no rulebook on how you're supposed to handle something like this."

Her story is similar to the one told by Beth Ferrier, who was a model and recent college grad when Jo Farrell introduced her to Cosby in the mid-'80s. "I was very vulnerable," says the Colorado native, whose father had died and who had just survived a serious car crash. Cosby "came on as a mentor, almost a father figure," she says. "He was there to help me with everything." But then one night, after drinking a cappuccino in his dressing room in Denver, she claims she blacked out. "I woke up in my car in the parking lot with my clothes all a mess," she says, still not sure exactly what transpired. "It's one of the pieces that keeps bothering me. I was definitely drugged. All I had to drink was coffee and the room was spinning. Then I wake up with my clothes a mess and my bra unhooked. I wondered, I still wonder, 'What did he do with me? Why was my bra unhooked? What happened?'" When she later asked Cosby about the incident, "He said, 'We'll never speak of this again.'"

Ferrier, then separated from her college sweetheart, divorced in 1985 and, she says, began an on-and-off consensual affair with Cosby that lasted several years. "He kept luring me in," she says. "I felt like I couldn't say no." Now a single mother of three and living in Denver, Ferrier, 47, says her experience with Cosby made it hard for her to trust other men. "She was so burdened by this," says her friend Lee Vittner, an escrow manager who says she first heard Ferrier's story five years ago. "Cosby is powerful, but not being the only one out there made coming forward a little less scary for Beth."

PEOPLE asked Jo Farrell about introducing Ferrier and Bowman to Cosby; now retired from show business and working as an image consultant, she says she only supplied Cosby with tapes and portfolios of her clients. "He wanted to look at children and girls for his show," says Farrell, 75. "I wasn't in on personal interviews."

Some of those who know Bill Cosby well say the charges are hard to believe. "Bill is good-hearted, he really is," says his longtime friend and former journalist Chuck Stone. "He and Camille are very close." The women, however, say that by coming forward they have begun to lift their burdens and, they hope, prevented others from suffering the same fate. "This isn't some vendetta against Bill Cosby," says Beth Ferrier. "But he needs to get help, and he needs to stop taking advantage of women."

fuck you.

that he feels like he needs to tear down a prominent black man to get his name out there. Good luck with that career buddy.

As far as I know Bill Cosby hasn't been charged with anything. So Bill was out raping all these other chicks but he never tried anything with Sondra, Denise or Vanessa? Or any of the chicks off of a Different World? He had access to all that young poon. If he was this serial rapist surely he would've tried something with at least one of them and they would've come forward.

Glover is a better actor than Buress. Buress is a much, much better comic.

if you walk up to 10 random people on the street, probably half of them will know who Donald Glover is, none of them will know who Hannibal Buress is.

Niggas wanna see a picture of Cosby raping held by his grandmother, yelling "I saw Bill Cosby raping 13 girls that accused him of rape wit my own eyes" while a tape of the rapes plays in the background on multiple screens and then they'll believe it mighta coulda happened.

If a half a dozen + women over several decades who don't even know each other accused this man of rape mostly committed in the same fashion , it's not too heavy handed to talk about this man raping.

In response to Reply # 0

r. kelly, because there is the tape.
and the marriage certificate.
and because the victims were so young.

michael jackson doesn't have damning evidence against him like that.
but he's clearly a fucking weirdo and many ppl find him creepy.

same goes for woody allen, really.
he's weird.

but cosby?
his accusers are imperfect.
they aren't children-- they are adults.
adults that were trying to make a name for themselves in hollywood.
and they didn't make the allegations until yrs after it went down.

and the cos?
we all loved him.
even though he's on that bullshit now with the respectability politics
we all still love him.

so it's not easy to hate him.
what i will say is this.

r. kelly, although not convicted,
got raked through the coals in public opinion.
as he should have been. the evidence was pretty damning.

michael jackson, although not convicted,
got raked through the coals in public opinion.
the evidence wasn't there, but i get why folks would believe the allegations.
MJ was so weird and the alleged crime was so heinous that i can't say the media coverage was undeserved. and boy, did it get a lot of media coverage.
he got raked through the coals for sure.

but cosby?

the allegations came out and most ppl litterally forgot about them.
that's troubling.
that sends a weird message.

i can't put my finger on what bothers me about that,
but something does bother me about that.

i am intentionally not commenting on whether i believe
the cos is a rapist. because that's not the point i want to talk about here.

why did ppl just hear about these cases and forget it?
that bothers me for some reason.
so it makes me feel some kinda way about folks
getting so up in arms about a standup comedy jab.

because with those accusations from that many ppl,
one standup comedy jab is getting off pretty easy,
relatively speaking.

on the one hand, it's not one woman but a dozen women.
on the other hand, it's a dozen women and we can't get ONE single conviction.
these must be shakey witnesses because no black man in America is that powerful.

what's the point of the justice system if you can beat the case and still be stuck with the stigma as if you did it. no. worse than that. people can just say outright "Yeah Bill Cosby is a rapist" without even adding "alleged" in front of that.

sowhat, you're a lawyer. how come you're okay with this?
i've seen you get all lawyerly and neutral with cases where guilt was not proven?
what about this case makes you toss all that impartiality out the window?

not being a crime to the justice system, especially in the 70's and 80's, shit now even. These were regular young black women, not celebrities. In an era when white women could barely get rape charges brought it was nearly impossible for black women.

Come on yo, if his MO is spiking drinks with sedatives and having his way with them, unless a woman immediately gets blood work done after the incident then you would have an extremely hard time arresting and convicting someone. Now that the narrative is out if it happens again maybe a woman would get immediately tested. If you had not heard the story then you would probably think you just probably drank too much and that's why you passed out and can't remember what happened the night before.

All the young chicks he had access to through his shows, he never tried anything with them?

walk me through it step by step. cause i don't see how you can't go about collecting evidence as in a (non-drug) rape.

okay so Bill Cosby slips something in her drink.
She passes out.
He has sex with her passed out body with no consent.

She wakes up the next feeling sore and having no recollection of what happened.
But she strongly suspects he's had his way with her.
Okay from this point, she can go to the police station and get a rape kit.
What's the hold up?

Shame? Fear? Fair enough. But victims of rape (with no sedatives or alcohol involved) also go through the same emotions and many don't come forward. Explain to me how Cosby's chemical concoction changes anything from a "regular" rape situation.

She says she doesn't remember anything. He says they had consensual sex. Unless there are witnesses or evidence of drugging the victim or real trauma or force, no prosecutor is touching that.

>sowhat, you're a lawyer. how come you're okay with this?

i'm not sure how i feel about it. on the one hand i tend to believe these accusers. but on the other i'm troubled that Mr. Cosby's name is being besmirched in the court of public opinion where the court of law is unavailable as a forum for him to defend himself. he could defend himself in the public court and has chosen not to so far - that's also a bit disappointing.

>i've seen you get all lawyerly and neutral with cases where
>guilt was not proven?
>what about this case makes you toss all that impartiality out
>the window?

i can argue either side of these cases.

if i were to defend Mr. Cosby it'd be based on a lack of physical evidence. if he had raped 12 or 13 women across multiple states - considering how much of a celebrity he is i'd think SOME eyewitness would've come forward saying they saw something or heard something before any relevant statute of limitations period had run. someone's auntie would've called police and said their niece claims Bill Cosby raped her, drugged her, touched her, et al. some nosy neighbor would've called police and said they saw Bill Cosby w/a young girl in a situation that didn't seem right. some hotel maid...some limo driver...some waitress...SOMEONE. considering these alleged events didn't occur locked behind the walls of some faraway estate - they were all over the place. and no one ever called police? or police weren't able to collect enough evidence to convince a prosecutor to pursue a criminal charge?

in all of these cases all we have is lots of smoke but no fire - lots of trumped up allegations conveniently made when they're nearly impossible to prove or defend in the court of law. so now these women and an infinite number of others are free to step forward and blast Mr. Cosby's reputation trying to ruin his legacy w/o any evidence other than their statements. there will be no due process. there will be no fairness. just rumor and allegation and innuendo accepted as gospel.

i could go on and on.

fuck you.

Cosby defenders: He's a legend! Who even is Hannibal Buress!? I've never heard of him therefore he's irrelevant in everything. I wear jeans with hammer loops in them! I know everything that is popular in every facet of entertainment. I'm hip! This is just another case of a black man tearing down another black man to get ahead in the business. It disgusts me! My bad faith exposition on crabs in a barrel is relevant here, right? Those 13 women what are they doing hanging around Bill Cosby for anyway? If anything can we talk about how they're tempting Bill Cosby into raping them? That's what we should really be talking about! Bill Cosby is perfect! We gotta wait til all the facts come out this time!

i'm out.

Ummm NO. That is not why I defend Bill AT ALL. I simply ask to see if anyone actually accused him, took his raping ass to the fire. Any arrests? Have there been any word from Bill's agents, lawyers, anything?

I have been accused of things in my past, things I did not and had nothing to do with. I even went to my accuser. Still, rumors persisted. People came forward with speculative "evidence" and a lot of "popular opinion" in the end I was absolved of the b/s but being accused and having "everyone around me" believing that b/s hurt, badly.

I am not saying Bill is innocent, and I for damn sure am not discounting this simply because he is a comedic presence.

Maybe Hannibal's words force Bill's hand. May it's than when we discover the validity of these claims. Maybe./ But until then, I reserve the right to NOT accuse anyone of anything without true facts. That's all.

plenty.
secondly, the cases aren't really comparable.
MJ had two accusers.

the first case couldn't even get a grand jury indictment.
then they changed the law, investigated the man for another 10 years,
and the only other alleged victim they could find
had a story that was even weaker than the first.

so i can understand how somebody reasonably could think that
MJ is innocent and bill cosby is not.
there were only 2 alleged victims, damn near 20 yrs worth of investigations,
and the cases were weak.

and besides--
the more important issue here is why doesn't anybody even remember these cases.
everybody has read about and formed their opinion on MJ.
same for r. kelly.

ppl in here are mad about jab at bill cosby over a comedy bit.
do you have any idea how broken i would have to be
if i got upset over MJ is a child mollestor jokes?

i mean, really.
ppl's reaction to this jab is weird.
bill got off easy, based on what he is accused of doing
and how many ppl are doing the accusing.

i wonder where the reaction is coming from?
i haven't figured it out yet.

It's strange that people think Cosby's fame was a shield in this case. I don't automatically believe a Black man is a rapist once convicted and you're talking about a prominent Black man they couldn't pin on 13 different cases? Nah.

This is where we disagree:

i thought the media coverage was biased
and ppl's acceptance of the prosecution's narrative
was cruel and unfair.

but so what?
this is society.

appearances matter.
sometimes i wish they didn't but they do.

it sucks for the falsely accused, for sure.
IMO, mike is a great example of that.

but every accused isn't falsely accused
and yes, the more ppl that come out the woodwork and say the same shit about you,
the more you look like a guilty motherfucker.

He's talking about people being so up-in-arms about this comedy jab, while it's
JUST A COMEDY JAB. Cosby has been free to live his life with his public reputation in tact,
despite the allegations.

J.C.Mo is saying MJ wasn't allowed to do that. Tyson wasn't allowed to do that.
Their reputations were tarnished forever to the point that their names became
synonymous with their respective allegations.
If all they had was ONE comedy jab thrown at them, their entire LIVES would be different.
Hell, MJ might still BE alive.

I don't think he's saying Cosby should go through it just because they did, but
relatively speaking, he HAS gotten of extremely easy in the face of such allegations.
For that, he is very blessed.

In response to Reply # 0

After all, R. Kelly has the same number of convictions as Cosby.

I don't mind if people on a basic principle say that calling someone who was never convicted a rapist is wrong. As long as they're consistent. They should also defend R. Kelly, Michael Jackson, Woody Allen, OJ, and Barry Bonds. Consistently and vehemently.

If they do, cool. Consistency is key. I'd respect the consistency.

But I suspect that people just love Cosby, and because it's often hard to separate the love for the art from the love for the artist, the defense is rooted in love instead of principle.

You can still say Cosby is a brilliant stand-up and a brilliant revolutionary TV personality while also mentioning that it seems statistically likely that he has committed rape. That is allowed.

I just want to know if everyone in here defending the Cos will also defend R. Kelly. If you would, you're cool. If you wouldn't, then you shouldn't claim your argument is founded in the principle of "innocent until proven guilty."

after all, r kelly is on tape and he married Aliyah.

but i agree that if you are using the "he was never convicted" argument,
that should apply to r. kelly.

if you look at the facts of individual cases and reach your own conclusions,
then yeah.

you could not support r. kelly
and still support cosby, while still being consistent.

i think.

In response to Reply # 146
Tue Oct-21-14 12:33 PM by Frank Longo

Because if you dig into the accusations against Cosby, there's some ugly stuff in there.

It's far easier to claim the principle of "innocent until proven guilty" than to get one's hands dirty, dig into the facts and details, and then stake your claim. I used to defend Woody Allen all the time using "innocent until proven guilty" (as he's made several of my favorite films of all time) until I dug into the accusations. Now I don't bother. Because even if the accusations are faulty, *they* clearly believe them to be true, and there's far too much pain there for me to bother standing on any sort of high horse to defend a guy who, even if he didn't do it, is unquestionably creepy.

So while you're right that different cases have different details... I suspect that most of those defending Cos in here haven't dug into all the details, because that's a difficult and painful process, and most fans would gladly remain ignorant (and I can't really blame them, honestly).

If they dug in, even if they thought he wasn't a rapist afterwards, they would almost certainly come away thinking Cosby was at least pretty goddamn creepy. And most people don't want to think about that.

In response to Reply # 143

Maybe it was just on here but it seems like R Kelly's popular image switched from freaky to creepy (to most people) within the last year without any new info.

I mean, there was an article that said his actions fit a pattern but no new charges and I don't believe anyone stood up and claimed he did something to them.

But, until rather recently, he was getting the Cosby treatment.
Why did his image turn for the worse so abruptly while Cosby still skates?

Because killing a person, in the eyes of the law and of the court, is not the same as murder.

It's a reductive statement, admittedly. But the comparison is predominantly for those who claim (a) Cosby is not guilty because he's never been convicted, and (b) Cosby is not guilty because it's his word against hers, and there's a lack of evidence to convict him. Zimmerman is not guilty in the eyes of the court. He claimed self-defense and there was a lack of evidence to convict him of murder.

I just want to know why, for beloved people, a guilty verdict is needed, yet for those who are less beloved, their accusations are held against them despite what a jury determined. It's not consistent.

I wanted to name something everyone had heard of. But yeah, in retrospect, probably not helping, as it'll be easy for those on the other side to get mad and focus on poking holes in the analogy instead of seeing the broader point.

To make yall believe I'm jab a the hutt.

In reality I'm prolly one of the most yoked cats on here but nobody wants to hear that

The point I'm trying to make is, Idgaf if the whole world says something is what it is...that's not enough to convict someone of this serious crime

If you're going to accuse someone of rape...you better have concrete evidence

If you can't press charges for whatever reason, or don't want to, for whatever reason that is unfortunate...and sad but is what it is

But the accused has rights too

and his rights are being protected - namely via the statutes of limitation that prevent prosecutors from filing criminal charges based on the accuser's allegations. so his right to a fair trial is being protected, as it should.

also, Mr. Cosby can consider a civil suit against the accusers. he may have claims for defamation, libel or slander (among others). of course, i believe the accusers (or defendants in the civil suits if Cos files) can use truth as a defense. if so they'd only have to prove that their allegations are more likely true than not (aka 'proof by preponderance of evidence'), and that's a pretty low standard. that standard can be met w/the accusers' testimony (btw...same is true in criminal court). if a fact-finder (jury or judge) believes them then Cos could lose in civil court. that may be why he hasn't yet gone after the accusers w/lawsuits. but i dunno.

and, of course, the accusers may be able to sue Cos in civil court too. but i expect statutes of limitation would be available to Cos as a defense. maybe that's why the accusers haven't gone after him in civil court.

it's not uncommon for ppl to seek relief outside court when no court process is available for them or when court won't provide the remedy they want. so like maybe the accusers are going after Cos publicly b/c they have no other recourse at this point.

fuck you.

187. ""you better have concrete evidence""
In response to Reply # 174

What does concrete evidence in a date rape look like? Without trauma or bloodwork showing someone was drugged there just isn't likely to be any such concrete evidence. That doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

And the fact is I agree that a woman can't successfully bring a rape charge months, years or even days after the alleged rape occurred.

Soo all yall can breath easy that the Cos probably ain't going to jail.

But we aren't talking about trial. We are talking public opinion. Or my opinion. And my opinion is that THIRTEEN women coming forward is worth examining and I can't easily brush off.

There weren't numbers like that accusing MJJ. And when all the evidence against MJJ was finally put before a fact finder, he was found not guilty.

There never was and will probably never be a trial for Bill Cosby but I will continue to look at him sideways because of the sheer number of accusations.

Funny thing is that I am usually always on the other side of these arguments.

It was enough for him to settle. He didn't sue for defamation. There was no trial to get to the truth.

Also dude is FAR from destroyed. He is still beloved and paid.

It was enough for him to settle.-- criminal cases are settled by jail time. who goes civil route first?

he didn't sue for defamation. There was no trial to get to the truth. <-- Who goes the defamation route? In the court of pub opinion we would slay him (just as you are doing now) even though there was no actual arrest, investigation, or trial. Most cases like this are settled.

Sometimes the news uses the terem sex. assault in the place of rape to soften the blow of what really happened. edit****

so in my mind they exist in the same place.
Not saying they are the same thing all the time but sometimes the particulars of an event are left out when a story is retold.

Hannibal Buress Talks Bill Cosby Rape Jokes On 'The Howard Stern Show': 'It's Just Information That's Out There'
The Huffington Post | By Katla McGlynn
Email
Posted: 10/21/2014 12:30 pm EDT Updated: 10/21/2014 12:59 pm EDT

Comedian Hannibal Buress caused a stir this week when jokes he made about rape
allegations against Bill Cosby recorded during a set in Philadelphia. On Tuesday, he
went on 'The Howard Stern Show' to talk about the backlash.

"It was unexpected," Buress said of the attention that the set received. "It wasn't
my intention to make it part of a big discussion. It was just something I was doing
at that venue, right there."

Buress said that this is the first time in his 13-year comedy career that his material
has generated major controversy. In fact, he noted that he had been performing
the bit about Cosby "off and on for six months" before it went viral.

The 'Broad City' star said that he created the bit after reading about the sexual
assault allegations against the legendary comedian. Cosby has been accused of
raping at least 13 women in assaults that took place as far back as the 1970s.
Cosby never responded to the charges and has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

"It's just information that's out there," Buress said. ""I said it and I gotta stand on
it, but it is an interesting situation."

fun.

b/c...like, how can one have 'fun' when our idea of fun has been so tainted and conditioned and stolen from us by whitey. we don't know how to have real fun b/c real fun exists in a world w/o whitey. any 'fun' we have is whitey's fun. b/c we don't know actual fun. we don't know actual joy. or happiness. b/c it all happens under whitey's taint.

it all must be rejected. nothing but sternity and strictness until we rid ourselves permanently of Euro influence b/c only then can we know true fun, joy or happiness.

In response to Reply # 240

it doesn't diminish their talent.
it just makes them talented monsters.

i don't believe MJ is a child mollestor,
but I did seriously consider the fact that he might be.
and even if he was, that wouldn't make "off the wall" not a classic.

i will admit the cosby show might be slightly overrated
but it's a perfectly great show and those laughs he got from us
can't be undone and probably shouldn't be.

because goddamn, can we have some light in the world?
shit like this proves why we NEED laughter.

there's so much darkness.

it's true what they say...people are strange, when you're strangers.

not compassionate....only polite.

I am not like you at all and i cannot pretend.
