And I'm not West Indian, nor did I know about much of that stuff at the time, outside of the few Shabba and Patra songs that crossed over into Black mainstream radio.

This stuff today I can only stomach for about 10 - 15 minutes before I need to turn it off.

And I'm mad you put Life Is What You Make It up as a song that's aged poorly. That song is still great.

90's dancehall is eons better than the crap out today. Especially when you start getting deep into it. Some of those riddims?!! The Nicky riddim, Bookshelf, Showtime?? Just timeless!

i was in the barbershop a couple weeks ago where they always have the radio tuned to some station that plays nothing but Dancehall (it's run by Jamaicans and feels like an In Living Color skit b/c the guys are like entirely stereotypical Jamaica, mon) and the DJ played a Stalag Riddim mix that went on for like 15 minutes. i thought was gonna lose my mind trying not to dance or nod my head to the music while i was in the chair having my hair cut.

fuck you.

I know in the ATL, circa late 80's, there was little exposure to island music...maybe Marley, Third World, Black Uhuru...etc. Maybe if you listened to college radio you heard some Yellowman or Maytals.

The 90's combo of an influx of Caribbean and NYC transplants, and dancehall influenced hip-hop getting airplay kicked it off, but still it just the mainstream stuff.

Wasn't until I started going to real Caribbean parties and could go online and hear everything did I get into the better stuff.

Despite often pairing two superstars in the genre, it just always came off as disingenuous. As a reggae fiend now, I see it for what it was. An opportunity for dancehall artists to gain exposure. I can barely stand to hear it now. Just awful.

I hated hearing them unless I was lit in the club. Always sounded horrible in cars. I also think it was because I cared more for the traditional reggae stylings of Bob, Jimmy, King Yellowman, Steel Pulse, Third World, and Black Uhuru.

The one and only song that I absolutely hate, on "Ready to Die", is the one with Patra. Dancehall shit ruined a perfect album.

No offense to forte but do you really know what dub means?

This whole thread is just *facepalm* on every level... especially the genre-definitions... FAIL!!!

And no, I have no rintention to clarify, I leave it to someone else since I don't have the "correct" credentials...
