I hate seeing the "Happy Father's Day Mom!" posts on FB and IG. Mother's Da is in May and I am sure that you were celebrated and acknowledged, but Father's Day is a different story. It focuses on bad Dads and that is not the focus of the day. Save your personal stories for your home. I don't wanna see it or read about it on a day that I work hard for get to enjoy.

I'm not a fan of the facebook posts and all that that usually pop up on fathers day, but I don't have an issue with a kid giving their mom a card like this if it applies to their situation. I don't really see why this would bother anyone

What I bring to the table as a FATHER is not trivial. It's not something that can be replicated. To even insinuate that it is, is an insult to ALL fathers.

Are they stopping tv to have some "for you mom on fathers day" card giving ceremony or something?lol

Its a card

And yea being a father is not something that can't be replicated, but sometimes the dad just isn't there so now what?

If you wanna be mad at somebody be mad at the deadbeat dads that abandon their children. You're fortunate enough to have a mate to help you raise your child. There are plenty of parents that don't have that kind of support. There's nothing wrong with a kid acknowledging the hard work their mom has put in trying to fill that void.

Not to mention I would imagine that fathers day prolly sucks for a lot of kids (and moms) might as well find something to celebrate instead of sitting around being pissed off all day

This even existing is a problem. It effectively seals the lid on the whole "Black fathers are disposable" product that has been pushed on the general public for the past 50+ years..... You don't honor your mother by telling her she's a great Father. You don't even set children up to accept or believe that their mother IS fulfilling a fatherly role. That's essentially fortifying to the youth that "Yeah, it's cool to just write of your dad...he's a non factor really"

The day means nothing then. Celebrate mom on mother's day and K.I.M.

How about the dads that are barred from seeing their children by mothers that have ulterior motives or vindictive spirits? How about the dads that CAN'T be there because they're dead...is this how you honer their memory? So many ways to flip this...

That's a very negative day to look at it. And the reality is that it shouldn't suck for a kid at all....if anything, it should serve to reaffirm to a child just how awesome their mother is.

Please stop

Its a damn card

People hardly even buy them shits anymore and the people that do aint putting THAT much thought into that raggedy ass card...that is if they even notice it.

The people that need/deserve it will get it and life will go on

Maybe you should take all this frustration/energy and use it for some good by spending some time with a kid that doesn't have a dad?

I'm not talking about the trifling moms. Most single moms (that aren't single moms by choice) don't want to do the shit alone...so do something if you feel that passionate about it

This a dialogue that needs to happen... but nope, we'd rather talk about trivial thangs.....smh.

I'm spending the day with MY kid.

My stance/opinion doesn't negate the weight that single moms carry or the greatness that they achieve by being a single parent. No clue why you'd even take it that way.....

I just find it kinda disturbing that you seem to be more concerned about a card than you are about the actual kids that don't have dads and the moms that are raising them alone

Bringing up "no good moms" was totally unnecessary. I'm sure you knew that I wasn't talking about those women.

I gave you a suggestion of what you could do about the situation if it bothers you so much, but of course you don't have time for that. So enjoy fathers day with YOUR child and good luck with sitting on the internet being worried about peoples situation that really have no bearing on your life.

The conversation that needs to be had isn't one about some card. It needs to be about kids that don't have dads and what WE can do collectively to help them...that is if you really care.

From the way you're talking this seems to be more about you than it is them...but guess what? You don't even have to worry because you will more than likely get a fathers day card, your wife won't have to bother with working multiple jobs and figuring out how squeeze in qt time with her kid because there are two of you. So everything's great we can move on

You wanna talk about trivial things...being bothered by a damn card that isn't even directed to you is as trivial as it gets. Do you know what goes into being a single parent? Shame on anyone that feels a way about a kid wanting to appreciate their parent and the sacrifices they have made for them. The point you're trying to make absolutely does negate the weight that single moms have to carry, but you clearly aren't seeing that which is fine.

And all of this goes for both single moms AND dads just in case anyone wants to try it

>I just find it kinda disturbing that you seem to be more

My concern about a card doesn't negate my feelings about fatherless children. I don't believe that this card is a positive thing for a fatherless child to even have access to. The card does nothing to elevate or enhance the parental relationship that a fatherless child has. It only serves as another reminder that a child's parental situation is different and perhaps NOT as rewarding.

>Bringing up "no good moms" was totally unnecessary. I'm sure

I don't have time for that at all. My time is dedicated to my child and my child alone. What's so hard about that? I have no shame in it at all.

LOL....the post is about the card yo. If you want to have that conversation, start a new post about it and we can go from there.

It's freaking FATHER'S DAY...it IS about me! lol... You're taking my stance as a personal attack on you...just like i'm taking the existence of this card as a personal attack at ME...so yeah...think on that.

Is that its easier to get upset at a card than it is to take an honest look at the circumstances that make it possible for such a thing exist.

I get how a Black man can see something like that and take it personal, but that doesn't take away from the fact that that card may speak to somebody else. Being upset that the card exists isn't going to do much about the circumstances that make it valid to some people...

You can stomp your feet to the point that the card doesn't exist and then what? The situation is still there...which one is worst?

The card doesn't create single parents or children that are affected by not having their father in their life. Sometimes we tend to hide behind the easier issue instead of addressing the real problem...that's what annoys me. For you to sit up here and make a big fuss about this and then make it seem like you only are concerned about how you (and other men) are viewed as a dad is a problem for me because I personally don't think like that or at least I try not to.

And to be honest I don't have an issue about you wanting your fathers day to be about you, but that changes once you start being concerned about how other people choose to celebrate the day. Imo you cant have it one way and just turn a blind eye to everything else...it just doesn't work like that

We can sit up here all day and worry about what ignorant people think about us, but doing that is sometimes a waste of time...especially when they already think that way about u. That card isn't telling an ignorant person anything that they didnt already think about you. Like I said before if you feel so strongly about the negative stereotypes that are out there regarding Black men then do more to show that all Black men aren't like that. Why that suggestion is being viewed as a bad thing idk...we spend so much time bringing attention to the bad..why not counter that or better yet not bring any additional attention to it all and focus on doing more good?

A child that you don't even know isn't taking anything away from your fathers day by giving this to their mom. That's all im saying.

>Is that its easier to get upset at a card than it is to take

I think the card's existence is yet another example of blatant capitalizing off of the ills in our community...and our American society at large really. On a day that's designated to shine a spotlight on Fathers; and celebrate Fathers; why does there need to be a product that highlights the plight of the single mom?

>I get how a Black man can see something like that and take it
>personal, but that doesn't take away from the fact that that

Of course it's not. I don't expect it to.

>You can stomp your feet to the point that the card doesn't
>exist and then what? The situation is still there...which one
>is worst?

They are equally detrimental. The card brings nothing to the table for generating a wholly positive dialogue or solution.

>The card doesn't create single parents or children that are
>affected by not having their father in their life. Sometimes

The card is a means for a large corporation to profit off of a major issue. That's a problem. Being that it's marketed directly TO Black people is what boils my blood the most about it. I've seen other fcked cards from Mahogany too....the whole line leaves a sour taste in my mouth honestly....but that's a whole other post.

>And to be honest I don't have an issue about you wanting your
>fathers day to be about you, but that changes once you start
>being concerned about how other people choose to celebrate the

Maybe that's where the confusion is surfacing...the card is there...if someone is moved to buy it and give it to their moms, then that someone is likely a child. I'd hope that the responsible mother would use it as an opportunity to dialogue and explain to their child that while they may be the BOMB mother and PARENT in general, they are not a father. And yeah, that's def. my personal stance...and I totally respect your personal stance on it too.

>We can sit up here all day and worry about what ignorant

I couldn't care less about what anyone outside of US thinks about US. Really...this is something I feel like WE need to look at ourselves and decide that WE don't want to continue to allow these corporations to profit off of our ills. Just ONE day..one day....as a Black father...i'd enjoy being celebrated....without a reminder that "Yeah, you're doing your duty FLUIDJ...but a LOTTA brothers aren't."

>A child that you don't even know isn't taking anything away
>from your fathers day by giving this to their mom. That's all

I get that, and I agree, it isn't taking anything away from my Father's day...

Then every year it's people crying about it. If. Person feels their mom is a fucking duck- that's their business- not mine.

Is there a Mother's Day already? Sure

But if. A person feels this way about their mom who am I to get mad. Why do I care?

In response to Reply # 11

I was raised by a single mother but she was NOT a Dad. She was aMom and taught me as well as a Mom could. I did not get the man stuff I think I needed from her because she is not a nam. I needed a Dad. I love my Mom and she was great to raise 3 of us *by herself (she had boyfriends and husbands but we still had no Dad and no male role models lol).

I respect women for everythingnthey do and everything they give to their children, but Moms are Moms and Dads are Dads.

If something happened with my wife and I had to raise my son alone, he better not ever give me a Mother's Day card.

I wonder, for all the Dads I know raising their kids alone, do they want Mother's day cards? Hmmm.

Folks trying to cop please and justify shit, but it's obvious what this is about. Instead of acknowledging the good fathers in their lives, some folks want to dwell in *negativity* and feign naivete when confronted about it.

I don't understand how folks can be offended by something that was created to acknowledge the hard work a single parent does when there should two parents.

Be mad at the deadbeat dad that skipped out on their kid, don't be mad that hallmark found a way to capitalize on what is a very real issue.

i could've gone many different routes:

i could've just remained silent.

i could've just laughed to myself.

i could've just scoffed to myself.

i could've replied like "*eyes roll*"

i could've cosigned.

i could've searched for an article about the subject and posted a link to it.

i could've taken a selfie of my reaction face and posted it on the 'Net and posted a link to that.

and on and on. my options were limitless, really. i chose to condescend. it just felt RIGHT.

3) ppl may have lingering resentment towards their own fathers for whatever reason

My dad is the most awesome man ever invented. My parents have been married for 43 years and they both raised me. For me, Father's Day is for my dad, and Mother's Day is for my mom. Which >to me< is the way that it should be.

But then I look at parents like Fishgrease. By traditional standards, he does everything that both parents should do. He brings home the bacon and fries it up in a pan...daily. So, if one day, his son decides that he wants to buy him a card like that (for fathers on Mother's Day) who am I to be offended? That's their relationship. I don't think that FG would want that, but either way, it's none of my business to be offended or not.

Now, I can hate all the "for mothers on Father's Day" memes on my FB or twitter TL, but that's different from telling someone what they should/could do in their personal relationships.

conglomerate took it upon themselves to manufacture and market such a card to the Black population specifically. I think all Black fathers should be offended for the very same reason. Hell, I think all Black people period should be offended by it.

We (WE as an the Black populace in America) are SO quick to jump on anything and call it racist, or say it has racist intent or whatever...but something like this...which is real TRUE covert racism is just brushed off, or embraced.

no. i can't/won't clap to that.

the youth are innocent...they can only share what they have access to...I'm not mad at them at all...

Not because I don't think that Father's Day should be for dads only, but because I don't think that you or I get to decide for other people how they should honor their parents. We don't get to be offended about/for other folx relationships.

I wouldn't buy that card. I wouldn't want to receive that card, but it also ain't for/about me.

The card suggests that that being a father is an ancillary role that can be performed by anyone. It is also put out by Mahogany, so it assumes this is an "Afro-Centric" card. Meaning YT ain't buying this shit.

If the card never existed, kids would still write letters, draw pictures and show their parents their emothions. A card like this simply says it is not just acceptable for the black family to be broken, but also it is acceptable that black men don't do their jobs as fathers.

I see no reason for this type of card to exist.

The problem isnt the way people want to express tgeir feelings

My issue is with the fact that a company that has already willed some holidays into existence via corprorate influence, is now pushing the idea that this is acceptible. Its not. Its undermining and disrespectdul to the unique perspective a man has on raising children.

The idea itself is nonsense, and yes its true that an individual expressing individual ideas to a parent is mostly benign. But if so, that raises the question of how this idea became as prevalent as it has.

Finally, you have to admit that the role of the mother is not socially perceived the way that the role of the father is. Thrown rocks dont hurt someone in a suit of armor.

a parent-child relationship is just that: their relationship. It's not my place to tell them when or how they should honor either of their parents. And >I< don't get to be offended because a child sees their mother as mom AND dad. If that's how their relationship is, then who am I to opine about their relationship.

THAT SAID, to me, mothers are mothers and fathers are fathers. Father's Day should be about fathers and Mother's Day should be about moms. If you don't have a father, acknowledge the other men in your life who support and love you. But let that day be to acknowledge father figures.

They can go to hell with that. And that's coming from someone who was raised by a single mother.

I understand what they are doing, and I can't really know the hustle. They are feeding into these grown struggle ass butt hurt mofos on FB and twitter that are bitter about not having someone to call daddy in their life. And they trying to seize on that for that profit.

My mother raised me and she did her best to guide me to the man I am today and I am grateful for that but she is my mother and I celebrate her as such.

But I hate that folks are quick to use Father's Day as some kind of rallying call to vent feelings about their absentee sperm donors.

There are so many permutations of family and kids should be taught to accept that and appreciate whatever form their family takes. No need to shoe horn everyone into this nuclear family bullshit if that is not what their actual family looks like. It's not a lot of peoples reality. Idealizing it only devalues people's true familial connections.
I mean how many bammas do you know that were raised by an aunt, uncle, or grandma alone? A shit ton. They don't need a fathers day card because they are not fathers and that is okay.

in my opinion, since i am a single mother and all

i am a MOTHER ... that is all i am.

i find the card belittling to the role a father plays in his child's life, whether the father is actually fulfilling that role.

it disgusts me that the day is clouded over by deadbeat dads. deadbeat dads are not the fault of actual dads, so their day shouldnt be filled with the daddy issues of others.

I'm just looking for a legitimate explanation as to how this card is somehow adversely affecting the lives of fathers everywhere. But snark on.

Cause this shit is trivial. If you know you're a good man and father then this shit really dosent have anything to do with you. Just be a good father, and let the kids that don't have that in their lives deal with it however they choose. If it be via card then oh the fuck well let it be, it is not obstructing your life in any capacity.

Normally its men that are inconsiderate and aloof when women try to explain why something is offensive or distasteful to them.

From her Downtown Chicago condo after running at the local formula fitness.

"Corporate wants edge, so I'ma give them edgy"

She lights up that champa and proceeds to write out the card title she thought of while reading an old tariq nasheed novel

"you are my dad mommy, her daughter said to her" the line from the chapter read.

After writing the card she smokes a clove and heads to bed with the nag still burning. She checks her phone for any missed texts from that lovely italian guy they hooked her up with on "It's just lunch" there are none.

At work the next day, Sarah calls her parents in Virginia with the great news, Bill in publishing thinks this is the next big inroad into ethnic cards for Hallmark, she may be in line for a promotion.

maybe Mother's and Father's should just be side by side.

These "holidays" though, they really don't mean anything outside of the importance and context we ascribe to it. Do I know my son loves me? Yes. Do I know he appreciates me? Yes.

We don't need these days, cards, flowers, etc. to validate the things we already have to do for the people we love. Every day should be laced with at least one small moment of acknowledgement and care.

If folks wanna acknowledge the hard work of a single parent then do that...but not on father's day if they're a mother, or mother's day if they're a father. In this case, this is gender specific...

Who the fuck cares what another person feels or THINKS about someone in their lives.

You weren't in their shoes.

If you're doing your job as a mom and dad that's all that fuxkin matters.

God for is something happen to my wife I can't be her but I would do everything in my power to be everything to my son.

What the fuck is a mom and dad anyway besides another gender role.

I mean are dads supposed to be more firm and moms more supportive? Why can't I be both to my kids?

I can't be mom just because I have a dick?

I mean my goal as a parent is to be as much as I can for my son and his development and growth as a person. He can call me whatever the fuck he wants as long as he knows that.

But its not going to be NOT offensive to the latter just because you wrote a fuckin think piece. Especially since everyone should be offended on some level about it from the perspective of the shameless pandering done by Hallmark.

For one, the person im replying to isnt black either; you just happen to agree with him.

For another, id love to watch you attempt explain why im not qualified to think this is dirty business.

Like I said, if you arent offended, cool. But to tell me what I should or should not say or think about it is laughable. Because its effect is going to be approximately zero.

This to my mom, but I definitely wouldn't knock any one else who would. I would feel somewhat sad for them tho because that's not a healthy way to see things IMO

But above all else this card and this post and these replies just highlight once again how much healing Black folks need in regards to our family issues.

I KNEW before I read one reply in here there would be at least 5 men talking bout "bitter women" and that they all would be Black men smh

It seems like so many biological fathers look at their children's mothers as the enemy, like they are pure evil

And many of the mothers feel the same about the dads

But both Need to try to understand that of course there may be some resentment or hurt feelings. Raising a child alone seems like a lot not mention love lost or just having ur life vision drastically altered.

Do "baby daddy's" and "baby mamas" every try to consider why the other person feels the way they do???

Co parenting to me is not ideal but I have a lot of respect for ppl who are no longer together but genuinely get along with their child's other parent

But when I hear ppl like my baby daddy ain't shit or my baby moms is evil I'm just like now what's their side of the story

The women haters of okp gonna do their usual (bloo collar) but some of y'all I'm surprised by smh

My mom and dad had resentment, I didn't really get exposed to my moms resentment until around when my dad died and a lil when she was dying. My dad on the other hand would spend half of the few times when spent together telling me how my mom was tryna "keep me from him" and he even passed that on to my half brother who tried to tell me after our dad died that our dad resented my mom smh all the whole I can count on more than ten fingers all the times I KNOW my dad flaked. I'm not mad at him but I recognize him as the broken man he was who died an alcoholic and wonder did my mom see his vulnerability as well

It's just a lot

you aren't making much sense tho...

Maybe the reason you are shocked by some of the responses is because this isn't about hating on women?

One can criticize women without "hating" them.

Also had the same kind of card on Mother's day. They saw a way to capitalize off of a thing, and went ahead with it. Businesses do that *shrug*

Kinda odd at all the vitriol spewed in here, but unsurprising.

Moms are Women. Fathers are Men. Both are PARENTS!

Anybody trying to argue any kind of made up nuances is just trying to be contrary for the hell of it AKA NOTHING of substance.

It slick in a way where it's not trying to big up a woman for being a strong single parent.
It's a diss. It's meant to stir up feelings of "forget that absent parent" It's just messy.
It's pretty much capitalizing off people with butt hurt feelings every time it's father's day.
