"Yo my son is trash in basketball "

Iv been in denial the past couple years. He been playing select ball but it was hard to gauge his skill level because his whole squad was trash. They were getting ran out the gym in tournaments but like most parents I was blaming the coaches. Anyway I came to that realization last night. He had his 1st middle school game. I mean hes on the A team so he ain't completely trash. But compared to where I was at when I was his age (and I wasn't even that cold) he trash. The one thing he got going for him is he is athletic. But he ain't got no handle, no jumper, and his perimeter D is horrible. I think he realized it too. Dude thought he was just going to automatically get better without putting in no extra work. But yea shit was embarrassing. Sitting with the other parents and hearing em talk shit. Nigga was 5 minutes from looking like the MJ crying face lol

I am not even that physically talented but all summer was playing ball all day. Same with after school as soon as it got warm.

That stuff makes a difference.

batting practice and developing whatever skills you need to do football and his son became an nfl player. most kids won't develop to that level, but most could be better if their dads were THAT dedicated.

and some of those kids just didn't have it.

some kids have it, some kids don't.

my dad was horrible at sports and I was a pretty good athlete. it really depends on the kid and the competition he grows up with.

I also had older cousins and playing against old heads is the best way to improve skill

They are more inclined to enjoy playing the stuff they are good at. If they are good at it, that's where discipline comes in.

he played basebal and football

i said

batting practice and developing whatever skills you need to do football and his son became an nfl player.

meaning he worked year round at a variety of different sports.

but yeah, i didn't know that they didn't use batting cages in basketball.

i thought you hit the basketball with a bat.

thanks for letting me know guys.

It's just that he doesn't do the work when nobody is standing over him making him do it. Like I showed him drills this past summer to work on his handle. Just a little 10 minute workout he could do everyday in the driveway. He maybe did it for one week. But like I said I think he sees the light now. Told him when you get tired of getting your ball ripped you'll do something about it

my friend has a 19 or 20 year old who was going to try out for the football team at a small college in SF.

Nigga didn't even want to toss the rock around with his dad before his tryout.

My friend said it was straight comedy watching his son look like trash.

Sad Shit to be 20 years old and still think you got game.

Should be no excuses for this. Let's get these recipes back man

I say that taking away his things is probably not going to make him excited about basketball

You then assign me a position of absurdity that, while easy to argue against, is not even remotely connected to my point

My point is this: if the kid wants to be good, he'll do it on his own. Turning basketball into a punishment will make him resent basketball AND his dad.

Acting like Marv Marinovich doesnt help kids want to play sports. It just creates a way for the parent to try to reclaim the glory he never had via his kid.

his fate is not sealed, especially if he is a good athlete. if he dedicates himself and grows/fill out right, he could still be a good player.

now i don't mean to shatter your dreams but prolly from the time he was about six you coulda realized the NBA wasn't in his future. but i bet he could play varsity and develop a nice foundation to ball into middle age still. chill.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

doesn't spend time playing ball with me.

doesn't have the money for summer leagues and camps.

sorry but if the team is consistently losing i doubt it's because they're ALL genetically inferior to neighboring teams. probably less active parents and not as good coaching

might be harsh to call the parents and coaches trash, but that seems to be the word of the day.

if you REALLY want him to get #ralph at basketball though you will probably need to be an absentee father. Let him brew that Jesus Shuttlesworth contempt and flip that into an all around game.

I was always super short, and I was only slightly quick...definitely not quick enough for my height. Plus, the asthma ALWAYS made me tired from running hard.

I ain't make the B-Ball team from 6th-10th grade. Yet, I played damn near every day, and naturally got better and better. By 11th grade, I had given up, yet I realized I was still better than a lotta folks my age and even older, just from the consistency of it all. I played heeeella video games as well, and I feel like I even read the game from thinking like it was a game...such as, "I should half court trap this play, like I always do on NBA Live."

But....in the last 12 years, I don't think I've played 25 times, and I'm completely over the top garbage. And I actually want to get good again, at 30, SOLELY because of the fact that I might have a son! I can't be trash, and my son can't beat me in one on one until he's at least 13-14!!! Oh...and not just that, I gotta be able to beat my wife/girlfriend's brothers and uncles if they wanna challenge me.

Do y'all think I can even get into a decent 16-18 year old level of skill, even if my athleticism ain't what it was then? I'm way stronger, but just way, way way out of shape.

cause there aren't too many places where a 30 year old can get his skills up. Most old heads aren't trying to have a garbage nigga fucking up their chances of staying on the court.

you won't jump as high, your lateral movement won't be as quick, but you'll be a smarter bball player compared to when you were younger.

i went back to college at 30. i lived by the gym. i didn't have a job so i spent a lot of time going to the gym to shoot by myself or play pick-up. 3-5 days a week. sometimes i'd play in the morning and evening. i got into the best shape of my life, no 6-pack, but i didn't have the same energy like i did in my 20s.

the hardest thing about hooping in your 30s is your body recovering after 1+ hours of playing.

i'm a better baller in my 30s compared to my 20s and teens because i worked on my funds and play smarter now. i took a bball class at a junior college last summer. 2 hours a day, 4 days a week, 6 weeks. i got in pretty good shape but after 1 month of no activity, it's hard for me to get back into summer shape...but everybody's body types and dedication is different.

i don't even know if DJR got a woman pregnant but I'm assuming he doesn't have kids yet.

why you gotta ruin his 5 year plan for?? lol he just wants to teach his future son fundamentals lol. like you were saying, you gotta make huge sacrifices if you want to work on your bball game in your 30s...and that's just to get IN SHAPE to start working on your game.

DJR if you're serious, i recommend getting in shape (physical activity) first, then run pick up consistently with different groups to start figuring out your strengths and weaknesses. then you have to do individual work as well as a coach/ppl to simulate defenders/teammates etc. it's one thing to get in shape, it's another to teach a kid how to play basketball.

yes, i was a grown ass man doing dribbling and footwork drills. i'd rather do that as a form of exercise over crossfit. if anyone knows other ways to improve your hoop game in your 30s, even just a little bit, please add on.

the original anecdote felt like a swipe @ Poke - as if she's saying Poke's son could be better at *insert sport here* if Poke spent more time w/him. further, when placed in context w/other comments she's made about black fathers/husbands (generalized swipes @ them for being inattentive/absent...especially relative to non-black fathers/husbands) the comments feel like digs @ Poke - a black father. indeed, her follow-up comments support the feelings, IMO.

i'm just waiting for her to post some stats (perhaps of dubious origin) showing how much time non-black fathers spend teaching their kids to play sports versus the amount of black fathers spend. that'll come.

fuck you.

whether you're talking about getting better at basketball or algebra.

In order to be good at anything you have to work at it.

I used to coach youth basketball and its obvious who on only practices AT practice and who actually works on their game on their own time. The kids that really want it come back better each year.

I've seen kids who dominated at the grade school/jr high level just because they were tall and/or athletic but when they got to high school and had to go against people that were just as tall and athletic as them but with better basketball skills they got exposed.

I've seen kids who were average at the grade school/jr high level but worked their asses off and ended up with D1 scholarships.

You might just want to have a heart to heart talk with your son and see if basketball is really what he wants to do. If it is he needs to understand the work he has to put in to do it.

It can be crushing for some kids when most of their teammates move to that next level whether its hs freshman ball, JV, or varsity, and they get CUT and left behind.

I took his shooting sleeve away. He scored 3 points. Had a putback off a rebound. And went 1-4 at the free throw line. Anyway the coach benched him mid 4th quarter and went off the court pouting and while on the bench he yanked off his sleeve and threw it down. Like he was really mad lol. So after the game I told him to hand it over. Told him he wasn't nice enough to be having an attitude and pouting on the bench is the quickes way to get on a coaches bad side. Also he just looked stupid. Wanted to tell him he don't need one anyway being that he ain't got no semblance of a jumper but thought that would've been too mean. He also had like 5 turnovers. They won the game tho. He got this teammate that's like 6ft and got handles. He basically gets all the buckets. I wanted to go up to him after the game and apologize on behalf of my son for blowing 3 dimes of his.
