"80's Hip Hop Discussion/Questions."

so, if im trying to expand the rap collection from the time of 1982 until 1989. Now im doing decently with my purchases this far... Bambaataa, Sugar hill gang, Mc Lyte, Rakim, LL Cool J (had to get radio), beastie boys, ect.

but i know i cant think of ever good hip-hop artist from that time. (shit, I was only 7.) so if you guys can help out... I need more Hip-Hop artist from around this time and era... really good rap artist that I can build my collection with. id really help if you could name CDs too, so I know what I'm buying.

edumakate me.
thanks.

of course, aything seem corny when looking back into the past, but x and jahlil was the truth back in the day, in context.

they brought that grown up vibe to hip hop. i got close to getting ass to Five Minutes Of Funk, and Freaks Come Out At Night. they was sex symbols. all them leather short sets was a little extra, but tame as hell compared to flash an nem.

respectable? matter of opinion i guess...

they didn't do their music any more than the beasties did

>without them, there's no nas.

*blink*

nah

beyond that..

i'll never forget that video where they beatdown the fake hammer with baseball bats

they went there on several levels

1. this was around the time of bensonhurst, so a gaggle of whiteboys (i don't care how many colored friends they had....don newkirk notwithstanding) beatign a brother with bats wasn't cute

2. hammer had done more for more people than they knew

3. they weren't THAT down because it would have been easy for THEM to catch one (how you gonna be someone who was "let in" then try to hold the keys?)

but i digress

down.

their early shit was punk rock "cookie puss". and they hooked up with rick rubin. a bunch of whiny white boys really and truly describes how they first came out and sounded.

on their first joint, though, they had dope production, fairly good party lyrics. but, at a time when cursing, drugs and all that was not prevalent in hip hop.

they were talking about drinking and getting dusted (angel dust), and received a pass on all that shit, and blew up with both the hip hop and fratboy crowd to hit platinum. so the 'elvis factor' was there. i remember being high and seeing one of their videos, and thinking, these cats are caricaturing black culture and getting paid out the ass.

Paul Revere was the shit though. i used to beatbox that reversed bass.

i think as time went on, they started to take hip hop more seriously (and perhaps there was an effort to make up for the tremendous 'priviledge' that they got when they came out), and they became students of the game, more concerned with quality than chart topping, and added on.

but the way they came out was pure america.

iont know. i always enjoyed they way the beasite boys were able to mix different sounds into their album... punk, rock, rap, all of it. and it sounded decent most of the time.

before The Roots. the one and only hip hop band, from america, london, even japan.

the beat to 'go stetsa' is some of the illest, grind your teeth funk (on par w/ joints off of critical beatdown).

"Just Say Stet", their debut, was equally dope.

from an accident, and i was thinking if i through some old school ish together that would brighten his day. i'll post the tracklist when i get it together. it looks like it may be a multi volume joint.

also, i did a post that's in the archives, on the early history of hip hop (recorded hip hop), that includes a lot of cuts to listen out for.

here's a link:

that essay is also featured/published in a book called The Hip Hop Tree: Seeds, Essays & Thoughts.

it can be found on amazon.com and other spots on the net.

Rodney O Joe Cooley? Cold Crush?? No. Not now. Not ever.

Spoonie Gee? I think one dude even said King Sun?
Are these people nuts?

Trust me. These guys are trying to out-obscure each other.

Stick to the "Golden Age". '85-'89.
Key in on '88-'89.

Albums:
Run-DMC - "Raising Hell" This is the first album you need.
Big Daddy Kane - "Long Live the Kane" maybe "Its a Big Daddy Thing"
Biz Markie - "Goin' Off"
EPMD - "Strictly Business" "Business as Usual"
Slick Rick - "Great Adventures of Slick Rick"
Public Enemy - "It Takes a Nation of Millions" "Fear of a Black Planet"
Eric B & Rakim - "Paid In Full" "Follow the Leader"
Boogie Down Productions - "Criminal Minded" "By All Means Neccessary"
KRS-ONE - "Return of the Boom Bap"
Beastie Boys - "Licensed to Ill"
NWA - "Straight Outta Compton"
Ice Cube - "Amerikkka's Most Wanted" "Death Certificate"
Ice T - "Rhyme Pays" "Power" maybe "O.G. Original Gangster"
De La Soul - I'd reccommend every old album.
Same with A Tribe Called Quest & Gang Starr.
LL Cool J - "Radio" "Bigger & Deffer" "Momma Said Knock You Out"
D.O.C. - "No One Can Do It Better"

Those are some the standards.

Others:
I may be the only one, but I reccommend Kwame "The Boy Genius".
Main Source - "Breaking Atoms"
Special Ed - "Youngest in Charge"
Tupac - "2Pacalypse Now" "Strictly For My Niggaz"
MC Lyte - "Lyte as a Rock"
Salt & Pepa - Hot Cool & Vicious"
Kid n Play - "Gettin Funky"
Poor Righteous Teachers - "Holy Intellect"
Kool Moe Dee - "How Ya Like Me Now?"

Somebody mentioned Dana Dane.
The only songs you need are Delancey Street, Nightmares, & Cinderfella.

As for '79-'85
The only Whodini songs you need are Friends, One Love, Freaks Come out at Night, and 5 Minutes of Funk.

Buy a Grandmaster Flash & the Furious 5 greatest hits CD.

There's "best of old school" CDs that cover most of the staple songs.
Rapper's Delight, White Lines, Roxanne Roxanne, The Message..
All that old old old stuff is usually on one CD.

That's enough for now.
Feel free to inbox me for more info.

keep in mind that all of them were singles, recorded over several years. they were killing it back in the day.

Critical Beatdown, btw, is one of the reasons why The Lesson board exists. ?uest created that specifically to talk about important aspects of the music, and I think Critical Beatdown discussion was one of the very first threads. check the archives in the Less-ahn to peep his and others' comments on that record.

but she did form Us Girls briefly with some other sistas, but that didn't go too far beyond "Beat Street." (which dropped in '83 or '84, i can't remember)

as for how do i know what i know about hiphop, it's always been around us. you grew up in post-crack, "gang-infested," reagan-era l.a. just like me. in my fam we had a few pop-lockers and breakers, and we all listened to 1580 KDAY, so the subculture pretty much helped raise me. you always look up to the older folks around you, and all the older folks around me were into hiphop in some way. that never left me. as i grew older the love intensified and i went back and filled in the blanks on everything i may have missed or not understood as a child.

i actually grew up in san diego in the middle of all that post-reaganomics bullshit. so things were just a little bit different out there than here. and although we did get the hip hop stations, i wasnt REALLY allowed to listen to it all (momma was kinda strict.

so i did get exposed to the culture, but i really didnt get into it like you. my momma was busy busing me to piano school and shit like that.

thanks for all that info tho.

other early female emcees include pebbly poo, from the masterdon committee (the original, "say, unnnngh, na-na, na-naaaah"). although she doesn't really do much of anything on that cut.

there was an entire crew called the Mercedes Ladies, that had emcees and dj's and did mad shows back in the old days.

jazzy joyce is one of the pioneer female dj's.

lot of sisters repped hard.

i'd say, though, that sha rock was 'the joint'.

i hated her when she first came out, because her rhymes were horrible (and stayed that way until kane or somebody else in the Juice Crew started ghostwriting her ish). however, she part of her horribleness was because she freestyled, so you got to respect that.

(same way "Top Billing", by Milk and Giz, which was THE jam when it was out, was butt, lyrically, but Milk D was freestyling).

In response to Reply # 165

Bryce didn't become involved until the very end of the group Mantronix (when they were on some R&B shit). This was just Kurtis Mantronik (if Marley was the Dre/Primo of the mid-to-late '80s, then Kurt was Pete Rock) and MC Tee.

171. "For a long minute, Kurt Mantronic was THE producer"
In response to Reply # 163

in hip hop. in addition to programming the shit out of the 808, he was one of the first producers to use sampling, back when folks were figuring out what to do with that ish.

his production was the shit during the mid eighties... he recorded under the group Mantronix (with Tricky Tee as the emcee -- his style, and this is contemporarily speaking, was mostly filler -- he had a nice voice and rode the beat, but the beats were ridiculous).

under Mantronix, check for joints like

"Fresh Is The Word"
"Johnny The Fox" <-- hearing that shit in a club with speakers for that 808 shit was awesome
"Needle To The Groove"

and some more shit i'm forgetting.

Mantronix also produced JustIce (the original hip hop gangsta) on his debut. the beats on this, again, were phenomenal.

"Cold Gettin Dumb" is a certified hip hop classic.

something new to the game w/ that staccato, word on every sixteenth note shit. but he, unfortunately, couldn't keep it up for a whole albums worth of material.

Do The James is a straight up classic. not only does superlover cee freak the new rhyme style, this joint evokes that whole golden age era, when everybody was rhyming over james brown samples and breaks.

"Girls I Got Em Locked" was a nice followup jam. after that. nada.

But he still murdered that LP. Nothing was fucking with Caliente's style then...and I've yet to hear anyone else do what he did with his voice. It was truly an instrument.

this cat is a true historian. he has interviews and inside info on damn near all the pioneers:

As far as albums to cop, you'd be missing out on a lot of hip hop if you are just concentrating on albums, a lot of the essentials were on singles, but for full length joints:

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Sugarhill Gang, Sequence, Kurtis Blow, they all had early hip hop albums. The WildStyle Soundtrack. Crash Crew had an album. Funky Four Plus One eventually dropped one.

you have first person interviews with the folks who were there at hip hop's beginnings from someone who knows the history and what questions to ask. dude used to sell tapes off the site, too. i don't see that now.

i'd love to have an old busy bee vs. kool moe dee battle tape.
