Unless you can find a movie theater next to an Ikea. Drop that baby off at the ball pit and mosey on to the movies.

3 and 4 year olds are a challenge at animated movies. I can't imagine that a 17 month old is going to handle two plus hours sitting in a dark theater for a drama.

Sooner or later the kid is going to get restless and everyone in that theater will end up hating you.

I had to stress *children's* movies, because children really don't belong in the theater for adult films. No two ways about it.

And wanted to share with those close to me. It came here in local theaters yesterday. My brother is in town and I wanted to do something as a family. Since my whole family was coming there was no one to watch the baby. So I tried to find outsiders and they were busy. So I played with baby all day, fed him well and didnt allow him to take a nap. He didnt want a nap. And I didnt force it upon him. When we got to the theatre he was comfortable but hungry so I pulled out a bottle I made and he went to sleep before he finished it. He didn't cry at all. Made no real sound except and occasional cough due to him getting over a cold. He was not an issue at the theatre.

and he didnt watch the movie. He is 17 months old.

Cool. You wanted to share with them, but you didn't have a sitter. Life sucks sometimes. That doesn't mean you go take a shit on everyone's porch, it means you just deal with the fact that you didn't get what you want.

Cool story. It could easily have not worked out so well, and as a rule, people like you shouldn't be allowed in.

it is very possible to take a baby to the movies, you just go when its the least crowded. I was laid off and staying at home with my son when he was born and we'd go to the movies at least once or twice a week, he usually slept through it because I'd wear him out and feed him good before we left, and I'd sit close to the exit so if I did have to take him out it would be quick. Of course you don't take a baby to a Friday night show, but during the day when everyone's at work is the perfect time to go to the movies with a baby. Folks act like you can't do anything but sit in that baby's face when you have a kid.....

I hate people who take babies to the cinema. What total lack of consideration for everyone who is not themselves. Sucks for the kids (loud and awkward) and it certainly sucks for everyone else who has to deal with the various and inevitable disturbances.

NO!

it would be cool to take a child that age to an R rated movie?

Is it that your oblivious of how inconsiderate that is to everyone else or you just don't give a fuck?

Also with regards to inappropriate content? Do you just haven't given any real thought to there being any in a brutal movie about slavery or, again, just don't give a fuck?

the mindset of "it went well because the baby didn't cry" is pretty screwed up imo

just because you are more considerate than someone who wouldn't wisk their baby into the lobby the second he started crying doesn't mean you aren't inconsiderate for bringing a baby into a movie theater in the first place

In response to Reply # 0

(I read the replies, I see the OP didn't have an issue)

But yeah, I don't do movies because of this right here.
The worst case was when I saw Django with my ol' man.

My ol' man and I sat down. Previews come and go. Just as the feature presentation intro starts, a young couple comes in with their baby and sits RIGHT in front of us. Like right in front of us with their baby bags, etc. I'm giving my ol' man the look like, "This is not going to be cool, we should move." But he didn't want to move cause it was dark and he was set. Fine. Maybe it won't be bad.

Well sure enough all throughout the movie the baby is fussy, the Mom is fussy with the kid, the Dad is fussing with his wife, I WANT TO FUSS AT THEM! This is 15 minutes in to the movie. Then I overhear the Dad say, "just give him something to drink." So the mom (not playing) pulls out an ORANGE SUNKIST, pours it in the bottle and proceeds to give it to the baby.

....

I'm looking at my Dad like, "This is going to get a lot worse before it gets better."

Needless to say, this baby was up the ENTIRE movie. It was kinda like sleeping next to someone that's snoring. Just when you think they're not going to make any noise, they do. It was that movie experience (along with a few others), that has kept me from going to movies at all. There are just too many variables that are out of my control with seeing a movie with the public. For example, I also hate:

+ people clapping during "inspirational" moments or at the end of the movie (can't stand it).
+ dude w/ the bright cell phone sitting 5 rows up.
+ people discussing the movie as it goes on. No, go to Starbucks afterwards.

And I'm paying $14+? Naw. I'll be at home in my draws.

I'm Seinfeld-esque with the levels of aggressive passive-aggressiveness, loudly stating to whomever I'm with that "Oh no, this isn't going to work... I can't sit *here* with *that* noise" (gestures toward offenders while grabbing my stuff to move).

I rarely ever go to the movies for the reason that you explained. One of the last times, this lady kept shaking her bag of popcorn for some reason. I was angry and lit, so I asked the lady "yo, can you stop shaking that bag? It's really irritating." Why do I even have to ask tho? Can't enjoy fine theater around uncultered savages.

at the last movie i went to, strangers got into a confrontation down in front because one fed up guy told a man to stop using his phone, and phone guy wasn't having being told what to do, so they stood up and argued during the movie and then sat down and sulked.

if it's someone directly in front of me on their phone, i press my foot against and eventually start rocking their chair until they stop or leave (one man apologized to his wife and then took the call not in the lobby but in the back of the theater. rude fucker). at iron man 3, a woman directly next to me in the packed theater kept receiving calls and answering them to talk for a few seconds explaining that she was at a movie, so i actually kept bumping and pressing my shoulder up against hers until she apologized for and tried to explain her rude behavior still during the movie. i'm not one of those people who will get up and leave during the movie to snitch on someone, and i feel people older than me should know better than me having to tell them why they shouldn't be on their phone during the movie.

it's getting to be where i can't take it anymore. for me, the absolute worst is the phones. i hear at least one ring in at least 9 out of every 10 movies i see. either people actually answer and talk in their seat (some even make the fucking call) or their screens are up on facebook, texting, or whatever these assholes do during the movie. whether it's a phone, a fussing baby, or the peanut gallery in full chatterbox mode with each other OR TO THEMSELVES, it's really spoiled movies in recent years. common sense and common courtesy obviously go out the window when it comes to the movie theater for some reason. it's a major problem, and i'm not sure the industry is aware of the lost revenue from people such as yourself who are done putting up with other patrons' rudeness and theaters' lax attitudes and incompetent rule enforcement. btw, i agree with you that clapping at the end of the movie like it was a live show is dumb as bricks, but i just laugh when i see it, and at that point the movie's over so it's whatever. clapping during the movie i guess is as uncontrollable for some as laughing and gasping is to others so i don't really mind that either as long as i can hear through it.

I went to a movie where everyone around me talked the entire time. They would hoop, holler, and cheer for every joke or new star that appeared on the screen. The people behind us kept popping mini champagne bottles every 15 minutes. They was a baby in front of us that cried the entire time. Not to mention the woman next to be kept cooing and playing with the baby to try to get him to be quiet. Phone call galore. An argument. And I swear we kept hearing one of the chair squeak as if someone was having sex. It sounded just like the rhythm when the bed squeaks.

In response to Reply # 65

I used to do merchandising work at a department store and the kids were thee WORSE.
The mom never watched their kids or paid attention to them. A lot of times they would get lost or left.
The Arab moms were the worse when it came to kids. They would be so focused on shopping and lose kids all the time.
During shopping children get tired and agitated. It's just not an environment for them unless you shopping for toys.

In response to Reply # 0

It's actually a nice restaurant, but on Friday and Saturday nights it basically turns into just a bar (hence me working the door checking IDs after 10pm). Well, around 10:30pm or so this family rolls up with little kids (like a 5yo & a 7yo) wanting to get a table to eat. I *really* wanted to get all snarky with them, on some "don't you see me the fuck out here checking IDs, & don't you see all those grown-ass people in there drinking and cursing and being grown? The fuck would you bring kids to a place like this at 10:30 at night on a Saturday in the city?" The waitress said it was cool tho, so I just let them in, where they had to elbow their way through a PACKED crowd of drunkards in order to find their table.

It irks the shit out of me when people bring kids to adult events, and I have a kid.

you know the potential for a disturbance is there

if your baby cries once, thats once too much and inconsiderate of the people who've paid money to watch the film

not to mention the fact that as soon as they see the kid they tense up because they know theres probably going to be a disturbance

Not anything I should rule my life by. I have never been to a movie where a baby cried thru it. So I'm sorry I lack the compassion u want me to show for people who have had bad experiences.

I took the necessary precautions to ensure baby would be entertained and satisfied. I also was only obligated to show up at the theater, not to stay, and since I I had seen the movie before I wasn't worried about missing anything if need be.

but need didn't be.

All this post says is that I took my baby to the movie one time because I had to fulfill some kind of obligation and he did fine.

I have never stated that I would do it again.

Because the situation was complex but coming from a good place my actions were blessed.

I dont stretch grace, but I do embrace and acknowledge it.

but people here seem to be very touchy about this subject. I cant remember a time a movie I went to see was ruined by a child/baby.

*shrugs*

And if im looking at it wrong I apologize. But my heart was in the right place which is why I believe things were blessed.

there's a reason no one really went in on Bblock's reply when it sounds like he's probably far more inconsiderate than you are. but he acknowledges and owns it, so for the most part people just lol'd and kept it moving. you doing something inconsiderate doesn't make you a terrible person, or even an inconsiderate person at heart. it just means you did something inconsiderate. there's really no shame in owning that.

http://i.word.com/idictionary/inconsiderate

Now I thought about everyone else. I concluded that I alone would be the inconvenienced one. I have never been to the movies with my child or any other child and only brought him because it was the last resort. As I stated before I knew if he started wiggling or fussing that id need to remove him immediately. The group I was with would have been the first to tell me to go. I considered it best to make movie time nap time and fed him well and played with him all day. When the lights went out and previews began i gave him a bottle. He did not finish it because he fell asleep. Stayed asleep though the movie.

I very much considered those around me. I played out every scenario in my mind beforehand and made preparations. Also I was blessed. It is something I would not try again but am grateful of how it turned out.

so please explain how I did not consider anyone but myself? Or didnt think about the feelings of others?

That one thing is that you wanted to see a moviq with your family, and that want overpowered any consideration for others in the theater.

In response to Reply # 122

you took steps to be less inconsiderate

you wanted to see the movie with your fam, but it sounds like you also sincerely didn't want to ruin anyone else's moviegoing experience, so you took precautions to try to ensure that wouldn't happen, and it happened to work out

but like CT said above, you decided going to the movie was the most important thing. in the end, your wants still trumped consideration of others. that's why it was inconsiderate

not the end of the world or anything tho

Note you were only willing to do but so much

Everything except the things that guaranteed you would not be inconsiderate
like stay home
Not bring the baby
Stay in the lobby and wait
All of this would have put you out
Which I guess you couldn't have

You need to revisit the word and get a better understanding of it

Kids soak up a lot. I don't think it's appropriate at that age to witness that kind of trauma. The kid can barely talk at this point, s/he's not going to be able to process a film like an adult can.

and most people wonder why the fuck someone would bring a baby to an R rated movie.

The fact that you believe you HAD to go says a lot. I'm pretty sure your family knows how to watch a movie. If you bought the tickets I'm sure you could have dropped them off and went on your way but since you are one of THOSE people...

Its not that serious but its extremely inconsiderate.

And put him to sleep. U are acting as if the mere presence of the child is an offense. I do not agree with that.

that is where we are disagreeing.

I dont think his presence was an offense to anyone. I believe most people had no idea or forgot he was there.

the theatre had 50 people at most, 15 who came with me. It was not crowded. We went to the 415 movie, not the 7 or 9 movie.

I sat near the exit, had a bottle, and had played with baby all day, tired myself...

but ready to go at the instance he showed discomfort that would lead to a cry.

The disagreement we have is that the presence of a child at a movie is offensive. He did well, and im proud of him.

and as stated earlier, I do not recall having any bad experiences of my own with a baby/toddler/child in a theater.

so its hard for me to understand where all this tense anxiety is coming from.

Really its not that serious. My feelings rarely get hurt here. I made this post and forgot about it and asked some folks in real life who gave me good advice on what to do and it worked out fine.

best part for me was sitting by my 79 year old grandmother while she watched the movie for the first time and talking with her about it afterwards.

since my first time seeing the movie monday I bought about 5 books and ive read three.

This topic really interests me cause I hardly ever read books.

Ive received instruction of a few websites including project1619.org

I called my 2 backup babysitters.

not available.

I will say this, it was my fault that I had not considered the fact that the other usual babysitters, family, would be attending the movie.

I woke up with this heavy on my heart and spent the first half of the day trying to figure out a plan.

once there was no option of babysitter I concluded not to go, but there were others who would be effected. So I made a plan c. Go, and remove baby at the slightest inkling of discomfort.

I didnt have to.

Like if you are stinkin you wouldn't necessarily know you stank. If you are inconsiderate you wouldn't necessarily know it, it's for other people to decide.

The rest of the audience would have suffered if your 17-month old had started crying/making noise, no matter how fast you took him out to the lobby.

Nobody is disputing it was in your interest. The point is that it's inconsiderate to OTHERS to take babies to rated R movies, even if the kid slept through it this time.

It was poor planning on my part that made the situation as it was.

this was something that rarely gets to happen. A weekend where I had freedom to spend with my family and share something that touched me in the process. But I wasnt aware that I wiuld have that opportunity until the day prior. And this outting felt like something that needed to happen. It was beautiful. And no reply here will make me regret my decision.

but no, I would not do it again because I doubt I will have the opportunity to.

I don't know you. But I do know that there are alot of smart asses in the world. 80% of them are in this post who failed to give a rational response to your question. This website is infected with these idiots which is why many of "us" have either left or just lurk to watch this place slowly sink into its own bullshit.

Props to KCplayer for their reasoned response to you.

I hope this doesn't sour your opinion for everyone on here because there are those of us who do care about your question.

I'm just sorry you had to deal with the children in the room before finding some adults to talk to about it.

Sensible adults showed up from the beginning

The children would be the self-centered, inconsiderate souls who feel that it's appropriate and acceptable to bring a 17 month old to the movie theather under any circumstance, with any outcome.

i'd base you taking him on his temperament
maybe switch up his schedule a bit so he's likely to nap during
or the movie time based upon it
i'd only go to an EARLY showing
preferably on a weekday

movies can be a bit overwhelming for small children
i took jack to see "toy story 3"
he could {hell we both would} sit and watch it at full attention

took him to that theatre

we're walking up and down the aisles
and wind up in the very front row watching the rest.

it was a WHILE before we went again.

you gotta good bootleg man?

Especially since no one irl was mad.

some of the folks I rolled with would have been the first to fuss me out if baby had started crying.

lol.

but he did fine.

wouldnt try it again any time soon tho.

and someone here made a suggestion that I researched. Mommy poppins. A 24 hour nanny that comes to you. 12 bucks and hour and 40 dollar agent fee. Minimum 4 hour slot.

kinda steep, but it is good to know.

id rather just spend 60 on tickets and sit in the lobby if need be.

and that makes me an asshole.

lil mama woke up like where in the world are we?
sat up in her stroller, rubbed her eyes and tried to go back to sleep.

it was Ratatouille (sp?) so even if she did spaz out it wouldn't make a difference with all the kids in there. She did surprisingly well though

Which is why I didn't take her to another movie until she was 3 lol

I'd suggest a matinee or try to find a mommy group in your area. They have dedicated showings of first-run pictures at night for moms. If somebody's kid starts crying nobody trips at all...

good luck

at the end of the day, though...
