"So babymomma's husband is hating on the clothes I buy my son"

She got married to dude this past summer. I know I haven't really been keeping ya'll updated lately.

Well anyway this spongbob square ass nigga been lowkey sending shots via my son and I'm really trying to keep from going upside dudes head next time I see him so I need ya'lls help on the situation.

It all really started this school year. I buy all my son's clothes and shoes. Its been that way since...forever. He might buy my son an outfit or 2 every blue moon but my son primarily only wears clothes I buy for him.

About 3 weeks ago I took him shopping for his bday. He spent the whole week with me basically. I copped him an matching outfit and we did the 'mini-me' thing for a day. copped him the all black lebron 8s lows, camo shorts, and this black lebron nike shirt(he loves bron).

So we do our thing that week. I'm taking him to school and picking him up. The following week he back on his normal schedule at his mommas crib where his momma drop him off and I pick him up. He get in the car one day after school with a salty ass look on his face. I'm thinking he got in trouble are something so I'm interrogating him n wutnot. He aint want to tell me at 1st but he eventually says that my babymommas husband sent him back in his room to change this morning because he said he looked like he was homeless and wasn't no kid of his going to be going to school looking like that. I'm still calm at this point because I know how kids is. I'm thinking he had on a flannel shirt and basketball shorts or something. He tells me he had on 'our' outfit. the camo shorts, black shirt and brons.

Now lookuh'hear okp.. tell me this nigga aint sending shots at me via my kid. Yea Its his household..his rules.. but this MY son.. he violating point blank. I know he feeling some kind of way about the relationship I have with my son and if him and my babymomma had it their way I would be out the picture completely. BUT DONT FUCKING PLAY WITH MY SON.

I'm getting sidetracked but thats the gist of the latest bullshit. How should I handle this? I can't let this slide.. I just can't.

If you don't know this by now....

And before you say that he's only x years old. That shit matters! It changes the way his school mates see him. It changes the way his teachers view him (believe that homie) and it changes the way administration (Principal & vice) sees him.

Know that I'm telling you this shit from personal experience (I'm the last dude to come at you w/some bs)

I know this is personal/painful - but really THINK about the message your sending. If your kid is a KID, send that lil negro to school in a t-shirt w/an anime/cartoon/comic book character on the front and some jeans. Camo shirts and a BBall jersey, like it or not, send a VERY specific message to the folks that are running your kids school.

*I* have NO problem w/ANY of this. *I* ain't at your kid's school tho.

THINK abut all those bitch assed Principals/Vice Principles/Supervisors/Cops/RA's/Coaches/Teachers/AUTHORITY figures, in general, YOU faced.

Would THEY have looked at that outfit the way YOU do?
Would their CURRENT INCARNATIONS look at it the way YOU do?

If the answer is yes, then ok, forget it, ignore everything I've posted.
Now if the answer is NO, put your pride aside and prepare your seed for the world. NOT the world you WANT, but the world we HAVE.

Know that all this shit I'm telling you, is coming from a place of love (c) MJ

I WANT your kid to do well
I WANT him to be appreciated for the kid he is and not what her 'represents'

but again, this ain't about 'me'.....

others who wouldn't like him REGARDLESS of what he's wearing. i get what you are saying believe me. But my kid going to school in a polo everyday (which he happens to do since thats all i buy him) aint going to change how racist teachers are faculty view him.

I tell him to act like he was raised with some sense and do his school work. The rest will take care of itself. But to somewhat answer your question all his teachers love him. He's a straight A student and outside of getting in trouble for talking in class his behavior is on point.

Aight, you get what I'm saying, and I'll leave it alone AFTER I say, that dude, changing who you are to accomodate others is a VALUABLE life lesson

Code-switching
Business attire
Professionalism
Game

These are all things we need to succeed, for the most part, and they all involved changing or modulating ourselves, to a certain extent, to suite the needs/tastes/desires of others.

That's just life, playboy.

w/the kind of clothes you have your kids in.

No disrespect, but ESPECIALLY as black men, we need to be conscious of our appearance at all times. That applies to:

Clothes
Carriage
Voice/Word choice/etc
Manners.

I wish we were all living in the kumbaya/bennington/post-racial paradise of the future, but we ain't and until we are - you need to arm yourself and your kin with the tools to survive in the reality that we CURRENTLY exist in.

From what you described, I'm not sure that you're doing that.

But that don't meant that he ain't right.

Sometimes mfers be right for the wrong reasons....

It's a hard pill to swallow, but it beez like that sometimes..... *shrug*

You def right tho, he needs to sit his baby moms down AND the 'step-dad' down and discuss what is and what is NOT proper criticism when it comes to his son AND the proper channels that criticism needs to be funneled through ANNDDD! The proper method that criticism needs to follow.

From what he described, it sounds like dude has a point, BUT he went about it the 125% wrong way.

the child is dressed then he takes that up with the father.

don't send (subliminal) msgs thru the child.

You gotta problem with me, we go out on the "porch" and handle it like men. Away from the women and kids.

we talk it out, come to a resolution and shake on it. Any animosity or hostility that continues should be kept down to a minimum.

right, you gonna be wrong in this instance.

That muhphucka buying steak & eggs and keepin' the lights on---you buyin' camou shorts and lebron sneaks.

she gotta go to sleep and wake up to that muhphucka. Any problem with him she gotta deal w/'em 24/7/365. Any problem with you she'll handle on the weekend or by givin' you the dial tone.

so don't expect her to EVER come to your defense as long as she got on his ring and their share mortgage/rent payments.

All she's concerned about is if your son is taken care of..she ain't gonna trip about the trivial shit concerning paco/jnco/thugwear.

if her husband has a problem with the camou shorts and shit, then by default she does too and she ain't gonna say otherwise. (atleast she betnot or she'll be alone and askin' you for more childsupport.

Maybe you should cut her out of the equation and step to him man to man. Not on no threatening shit, but take the negro out for a beer and try to explain to him why what he did is out of pocket and ask him to respect the boundaries OR take his concerns/criticisms to you.

I mean, at the end of the day, as long as that negro's married to your baby-moms y'all are essentially co-fathering so, for the good of your son, you need to be on the same page.

if his father got him something for him then that actually means something to both the father and the boy

Stepdaddy as a man can feel however the hell he wanna 'feel' about it
but there's a line u don't cross

by stepdaddy sayin 'no son of mine will....' is where he overstepped his boundaries

i will say that being a stepdad is THE hardest job in the world but u gotta know when to fold em

if dude above aint causing any potential harm or breakin any laws, stepdad has no footing...he can have an opinion...but no footing

which is why i say he needs to talk to the moms

you need to look at your own sig, man. She ain't crossing her man, or at least she SHOULDN'T. In a perfect world everything you just said would be 100 and would apply. Sadly this ain't that world. Also, as much as it sucks, I think dude MAY want to consider whether or not dude's unwarranted and unsolicited criticism cary water. If they do, regardless of the fact that step pops is acting uncouth, for the good of his son, he MIGHT wanna look into it.

the clothes thing to..he's probably a little harsher on your son just because he can. On some yo daddy ain't gonna do sh*t, this my house. Ya baby momma can't ride for you, that's her husband.

You either gonna have to handle it like gentleman or get in some gangster sh*t. (C) Snoop Dogg

He essentially doesn't want your son to do anything that reminds him of you. It's bad enough, he wifed up what is akin to your jumpoff, but he also has record of it when he sees your son. So yeah, he's trying to peacock and sneak shots at'cha whenever he can.

As a father, I know first hand that muhphuckas will ultimately try you simply because they know as a general rule you're not going to do anything when your child is around. And because of that alone, that's the only time they see you, so they get their shots in hopin' y'all don't cross paths alone and you can retaliate.

and was able to express perfectly what had made him upset some 8 hours ago. That is not the behavior of a toddler. If the kid was anywhere up to 4 years old, that might be something, but if the kids is north of that then this sounds like some My Brother and Me corn shit.

Also, you know good and god-damned well ain't NO court in America granting a single-father custody over a mother that ain't cracked up, fucked up, locked up, ESPECIALLY a MARRIED mother.

You shouldn't be in this situation. Marrying people with kids is
stupid. Having kids with people you can't be with is stupid.
It's severely impractical and this post is a working example of my
point. You discussing it on OKP is stupid and makes you look weak
but what can you do when YOU made these decisions?

OP has a baby with BM. BM is married to CSH. It is OP's and BM's
right and responsibility to take care and make decisions for their
child. CSH cuts in and infringes on the OP's rights. When dealing
with the Nuclear family, the father and mother work as a team and
SHOULD be a united front. In this circumstance the father is NOT part
of "the family". CSH is overstepping his boundaries BUT when you
enter into these situations that will happen. It's completely
impractical and what makes it worse is that CSH is right about

saying but seldom do muhphuckas have kids and not intend on being with the mother/father. Life is full of obstacles and sadly staying in love isn't one of those things you can easily jump over.

They had a child, their relationship didn't work out and for all intents and purposes they are seemingly cordial for the sake of the child. Mom remarries, starts a new family unit per se. Step Dad set a few standards for how HIS home and everyone in it is gonna act/dress yada yadda. I don't have a problem w/that AT All.

The message that the stepdad conveyed is cool, it's his approach/manner of how he got it across is more or less the issue.

Hell it would probably be cool if both men sat down and the step dad said during the school week Mon-Thursday, " i want DJ Poke,Jr. to wear this that and what not, and on the fridays that you pick him I'll let him wear the lil' Lebron gear or whatever have you.

Don't for a second discredit the step dads role or authority in this. You may be buying clothes and man-man's weekend getaways but that stepdad is providing a home and at the end of the day, his house rules have to be respected and followed.

In response to Reply # 199

That viewpoint is problematic. It maybe his house but a step-parent
has no business making those types of decision if Dad is in the
picture. I understand certain aspects of behavior in HIS HOUSE but
what the child wears(like many other things) is outside his call.
The step-dad has no right to dictate how the child is raised.
Like I said, certain aspects of behavior he may have a call on but
anything else is inappropriate. This is one reason why this setup is
impractical.

Don't have kids in that situation UNLESS you want to post about it
on OKP and look stupid...For MY enjoyment.

There's a serious problem with that because this isn't something he
should be able to control. This is frankly a failure on the mother's
end. If you want that control have your own kids. If you aren't
going to have your own kids do what's best for the kid and let the
Parents handle their duties. If the natural parents aren't handling
their duties THEN you'd be well within your rights to raise the kid.

>The message that the stepdad conveyed is cool, it's his

I agree with that. That lil boy was dressed like a f'n bamma.

>Poke,Jr. to wear this that and what not, and on the fridays

That doesn't mesh with what the OP said his arrangement is.
According to the OP he see his child everyday and on the weekends.

>in this. You may be buying clothes and man-man's weekend

What you wear isn't a function of a "house rule" but even if you could
make a solid case for that it still wouldn't matter. This issue boils
down to how the boy is being raised and no one other than the natural
parents should have a say. It's a failure on the OP's end for not
thinking all this through before getting his BM pregnant. This is the
BM's failure for not realizing the effects of her getting (re)married,
not respecting the father and not working with the OP to establish
ground rules. This is a failure on the CSH's for not being a man and
realizing that this isn't his child so he needs to not take the
insecure route and try to control shit that he SHOULDN'T be
involved in.

you're talkin' about the foresight thoughts that couldve avoided this situation in it's entirety and not attacking the situation at hand.

The child is here. the problems are before us. Try offering a solution to bring this thing to an end instead of basically tellin' ol' boy "you shouldnt have fucked the broad and had a kid outta wedlock.

And it's foolish to think that the step father won't have ANY input in the upbringing of a child in his own home, if that so be the case be prepared for even more issues because that's essentially giving the child free reign to disrespect the stepfather totally on some " you ain't my daddy type shit"

and i stand by my OKP is a world all unto itself statement because the things y'all envision going on here seldom reflect or cross over into the real world.

>sips of the brew (C) C.L Smooths uncle

I made a very specific point. The Step Dad needs to leave that
controlling shit alone. He isn't doing this for the kids best
interest. He's concerned about how HE, the step dad, looks.
It's impractical because the BM shouldn't have married a man
that can't put her child's best interest ahead of his need to
control. The OP needs to handle that.

>you're talkin' about the foresight thoughts that couldve
>avoided this situation in it's entirety and not attacking the
>situation at hand.

I'm talking about that AND the problem that currently exist.
The step-dad should have ZERO to say about the child is being raised
unless there's a blatant safety issue.

>The child is here. the problems are before us. Try offering a
>solution to bring this thing to an end instead of basically
>tellin' ol' boy "you shouldnt have fucked the broad and had a
>kid outta wedlock.

There is NO WAY to correct the problem. The OP isn't going to kill
the BM or CSH. The OP won't even tell the CSH to stay in his lane.
I never said anything about wedlock.

>And it's foolish to think that the step father won't have ANY
>input in the upbringing of a child in his own home, if that so
>be the case be prepared for even more issues because that's
>essentially giving the child free reign to disrespect the
>stepfather totally on some " you ain't my daddy type shit"

I never said I think "...the step father won't have ANY input..."
I said it's NOT HIS PLACE. I also addressed that there are certain
situations in which he has some say on the child but it would be
things that don't have bearing on how the child is raised. The child
would only have free reign to disrespect the step father if the
mother and father weren't doing their jobs. The child disrespecting
the step-dad has NOTHING to do with if the step-dad has a say in how
the child is raised. I'll use this as an example, The father and
mother establish a bedtime. The kid hasn't gone to bed by the bed
time. At that point the step-dad is well within his rights to say
something because it's with in the rules set by the parents. If the
step-dad tried to impose his own bed time, that would by out of
bounds. This isn't the first time I've heard the argument you made
but it's still as bad.

You aren't really addressing what I said but you are addressing what
you WANT to address. You should look at what I said more critically
and consider the difference between what I actually said and you
perception of what I said.

>and i stand by my OKP is a world all unto itself statement
>because the things y'all envision going on here seldom reflect
>or cross over into the real world.

That statement makes ZERO sense. Again, You want to address what I
said the way you WANT it to read. I made the point that the
step-father is out of bounds in regard to his control issues.
I said that the Step-dad needs to do what best for the kid and
sit the fuck down somewhere. With that said, when did I say
something that isn't happening? Your statement doesn't apply
because I'm saying what the step-dad is ACTUALLY doing is wrong.

ask to meet with BOTH of em.. just lay it out respectfully. (doesn't matter if u think he was disrespectful.. always come correct yourself)

just lay it out.. listen my son and i have a bond, we got these matching outfits.. i dont feel its inappropriate, but lets talk. what kind of common ground can we come to about these kind of situations? i respect that you care for my son part of the time, and if the situation was reversed i definitely wouldnt want to be at odds with you regarding YOUR son.

just hear em out.

IF u get what a lot of okps here said, which is that fit may be considered by some as hoodish or whatever.. either deal with it, or agree to let him wear whatever when he is with you and when he's not at school.

like it or not, the man IS caring for him part of the time, u know?

i think coming at it respectfully with the intent of coming to an agreement or compromise will bode well for the future of this shared relationship reality. (and a good lesson for your boy about working together even if you dont agree about everything)

but this is just how i roll.

But for reals, you need to talk to your ex and let it be known that it's not his place to be doing that. If there's an issue with the clothes being inappropriate, then they need to get at you about that instead of talking all that shit.

Well, if hubby aint paying for your sons' clothes, he doesn't need to be commenting. He sounds a little haterrific, but hey, at least you know.

Wasn't like he called you up, like hey pussy, you know I hate Lebron right? Little spongebob-ish...but keep it cool.

So, keep your sons' clothes at your house. The only thing he should be bringing when he spends time with you is himself.

honestly i dont really see a solution for that.

cant he just wear the clothes his father bought for him when hes with his father?

in any case, the father should talk to the son. explain that he and stepdad arent always going to see eye to eye and hes the one who is responsible for raising him into a man.

in other words, i dont fucking know.

no u can't tell another man what to do in HIS house.. (see my reply above) but you CAN work together.

ego is what causes all these fucked up situations and then you are only teaching the children that exes are SUPPOSE to hate each other and battle..

thats not to say you can guarantee anyone else being reasonable.. but you can be reasonable yourself.

lives and even though it can be rough starting out often a lot of kids end up closer to their stepfather than their biological.

That whole "you can't say nuthin to MY kid" shit is what has a lot of females out here single raising kids alone while they BD is somewhere else knocking another broad up

and it gets my blood pressure up because i was raised in a full joint custody situation and i cant imagine not having been able to be w my dad every other week for the ENTIRE week
i just dont get why more fathers dont do one week on/one week off
tho i understand thats not always available it IS more often than folks say
dude my mom was dating had no place telling my brother anything abt ANYTHING because my dad wld have nipped that in the bud
so i think you do need to talk to the step dad
but that your words would be taken more serious if he was with you more than he was with the stepdad

but yes iv tried for joint. didnt get it. caused alot of upheaval. left both of us scarred up. still dealing with alot of bullshit from that whole process.

i get to see my son everyday and i honestly think its a more stable situation the way it is now than him trading beds and households every other week.

this shit aint perfect. far from it but i've learned to pick my battles and the custody shit is not one i want to entertain at all right now. especially over something as petty as this.

A MAN should NEVER step on another dudes toes like that point blank. You assuming all kinds of shit. It's really no deeper than that.

In order for situations like this to work there has to be respect shown on both ends. If dude had a problem he should've discussed it with him NOT his son. That was totally out of line for a number of reasons. Shit like this happens often. Situations like this take time to work out. I don't see where u get off acting like somebody isn't a good father. U got a lot of nerve up in here.

Like do yall even understand how custody works??? Not to mention what good would it do the son to remove him from his home like that....over a outfit???

U can't just get custody over simple shit like that. If that were the case kids would be switching homes all the time. Like come on now

>you can't tell another man what do in HIS house.
>
>Get custody or STFU.

OP said "I know he feeling some kind of way about the relationship I have with my son and if him and my babymomma had it their way I would be out the picture completely."

which to me says he shld try to get joint custody
maybe hes already done that who knows
but if thats the way THEY want it to be, its worth it to try and circumvent that happening if he wants to maintain a relationship w his son without this stepdad stepping all on his toes

>In order for situations like this to work there has to be
>respect shown on both ends. If dude had a problem he should've
>discussed it with him NOT his son.

of course he shld have
but we see he doesnt move like that and to me its indicative of whats to come down the line if he doesnt nip it in the bud now
one of the ways to do so is to make sure he has joint custody and bears a completely equal responsibility for that child as the mom does

i mean i give a fck but i don't give that much of a fck

Nobody in their right.mind would start a custody battle over this bullshit. It's a total waste of time and will only make shit worse.

Assuming they already went to court what exactly is he gonna say to convince a judge to change their ruling?

In this case its not worth a try at all. Not over this. This kind of shit is normal. It just takes time for everyone to find comfort in their roles. .

teachers are paid to give our children an education

if it's an issue for the teachers it sounds like the OP is involved enough to talk to them about their issues

but i went to school with white kids who wore camo on some fucking columbine killer shit and nobody said anything

i feel what you're saying about not giving them a reason but if a cracker is racist, they really dont even need one

your kid shouldnt be conditioned to think he cant be successful and wear ____

thats a bad (and hella tommish) message to be sending

regarding your scenerio i'd need to know how old the kid is to have any suggestion

my main one would be that he should be able to wear what he wants

process. what the fuck are you talking about?

so because the lil dude wearing camos he a thug now?

i have a professional ass job but last year when i was still in school i took the opportunity to express myself because i didnt have any other opportunity to BECAUSE of my job

at work im in blazers and heels so school was like tats out, tits out, living my life

why? because my intelligence was the point

i graduated with honors and nobody gave two shits about my outfit

smart people know what to wear for interviews and to work

what you wear to school is your business. its the one place that shit shouldnt be a priority.

having on a belt doesn't improve your SAT scores.

Negro it's 9% unemployment nationwide. YOU might have that kind of freedom in your job, but MOST companies are cracking the whip right now. That kinduva shit ain't flyin in most places

AND

you're a cute female, he has a boy - the rules are different.

>at work im in blazers and heels so school was like tats out,
>tits out, living my life

You talking about college, that's a different ball game. When the lil' negro gets to college he should get a tat, sag his pants, get some cornrows and alladat, but in primary/middle school/ HS?

Nah....

again you talkin about college, the rules are different.

lol having a belt might get you to the point where you can TAKE the SAT.

Tracking is REAL
Favoritism is REAL

Almost every kid gets a 2nd chance, and most need them, not all kids get 3rd and 4th chances. Shit like how you dress, how you look, how your parents act, how you talk, how your parents talk - determines how many chances you get. School ain't populated by perfect educational automatons. It's populated by people with people's imperfections and people's prejudices.

You can pretend like this is the United States of Bennington if you want, but I'ma be over here in the real world.

WTF do you think compulsory education is for?

Yeah, they learning how to count, spell, etc. But they can learn (most) that at home. It's about SOCIALIZATION.

Do you know what that means?

Teaching them how to act/react talk/respond amongst their peers and superiors. This is preparation for live as an adult.

You have VERY little time to form your child's personality before they are 'set' - and that ain't me, most child psychologists agree, in some cases they're talking about as little as 5 years. By they time your kid is out of Elementary, the person they are is the person they are going to be. So yeah, this shit matters.

Theses lessons matter. Seriously, SOMEONE is going to work in the office. They're not all going to be self-made, self-employed. YES, you need to teach/prepare them to deal with and within the system. This shit ain't that complicated.

smh

you might not like the way things are.

Newsflash, neither do I, but I'm not gonna sit here and pretend like shit is anything other than what it is.

If that makes me a Tom, then so be it. *shrug* none-the-less, I take parenting too seriously to do anything other than prepare my child, as best I can, for success. And, unfortunately, selective conformity is part of that.

normally i wouldn't even carry on this much but this doesn't even seem like you. in every other way you seem liberal, sensible and non-conformist. so really, i'm just kind of shocked.

i understand where you're coming from but that doesn't make it hurt any less.

we shouldn't be living our lives according to THEM. especially when like i said, white people be looking however they want.

You're absolutely right - but I'm also a realist, because I've been in the situation when I've been blindsided by shit that was written on the wall, I don't wanna set my kid up like that. Am I over-correcting, perhaps and I'm ok with that. They'll have PLENTY of time to express their individuality in their early adulthood once they understand the abstract concept of moderation and conditional/situational conformity. Until then.....

Yeah, I understand.

I agree - and I don't think this has anything to do with how we live our lives. But what picture do we present to them? Not everything is for them and therefore I believe we need to keep somethings just for us/close to the vest.

Different - sure, but I've SEEN the way they label kids based off of HAIR. Seriously, HAIR. You'd be shocked if you saw the shit I see...

about a damn outfit?

Because if not you coming off kinda bitchmade making a big deal out of nothing. You call dude a "spongbob square ass nigga" so he must be a professional cat that wears a tie everyday and you still dressing like you're 16 running around in camo shorts and sneakers that's probably why BM chose him over you.
