"Things to do in SF"

last time i was there i only got to shop and eat and visit sfmoma

i already got the art things covered so what else is there to see in SF? we'll be there for 2-3 days but i'll be in the area for 6 weeks. oh and i'm preggers so you can scratch bars or anything revolving around drinking.

i am looking for some good dim sum tho and whatever that gelato place was that the recommended janey.

and the one that I found to replace it has ALSO CLOSED!

Now I just go to Swenson's on Union & Hyde, but that's because it's close to home and has peppermint stick ice cream. Other people have very definite opinions about SF ice cream.

I can tell you where a candy store is that stocks a lot of candy from my childhood, though.

Also, I think you went to the Ferry Plaza last time you were here. It's still a great place to wander around for people who like food. I hate it on weekends -- way too crowded -- but Boulette's Larder is one of the best kept lunch secrets in town.

"we're getting in on a wednesday"

we've got wednesday, thursday and friday morning in SF and then we're renting a car to drive to sausalito. he's staying until monday and then flying back to SD.

i'm hoping to eat myself into a coma before he goes so he can roll my big ass into my studio, lol. i'm sure all the walking will negate all that eating though.

those are the best days in SF anyway.

Here are some restaurants for you:

http://slanteddoor.com/ Wonderful modern take on Vietnamese
http://www.yelp.com/biz/mais-vietnamese-restaurant-san-francisco A more traditional Vietnamese restaurant, with what I think are the best imperial rolls in the city. Plus it's about 2 blocks from Green Apple bookstore, which is the largest used bookstore in the city.
http://wohinggeneralstore.com/ the new one, getting RAVE reviews by the owner of the Slanted Door
http://www.zunicafe.com/ Sometimes when I go here I think the food is good, sometimes I think it is great. It's a San Fran staple.
http://greensrestaurant.com/ this is a vegetarian restaurant that is so good that carnivores don't miss meat. I love it here.
http://perdiemsf.com/ We tried this recently and liked it a lot.
http://www.ardoisesf.com/ this one is slightly off the beaten path but OH BOY is it good! We keep saying we're going back there but getting distracted.
http://hunanhome.ypguides.net/ this really is a great Chinese restaurant, well priced, welcoming, in Chinatown

Dim sum:

http://www.yanksing.com/home.php This is probably my favorite.
http://cityviewrestaurant.reachlocal.com/?scid=59908&kw=866582:68326&pub_cr_id=5907879487 This is a really good one -- my Chinese boss used to take us here.
http://www.tonkiang.net/ You can sometimes find okpeeps here

you know how they say whatever you eat while pregnant your child will want to eat. It is absolutely true. During the end of my wife's pregnancy she was all about pickles, ice cream, pasta, and tacos. My son asks for these 4 items DAILY! Me and him killed an entire jar of pickles one day. just constantly snacking on them all day long.

I know you didn't request this, Girlchild, but someone else did and I said I would post here.

Books. The thing about books is that you can find almost every book in almost every run of the mill bookstore, so here are a couple of stores that have interesting and unusual inventory:

Green Apple Books: The largest used bookstore in SF. They have some of EVERYTHING. It's pretty amazing to walk through. They had to open a separate store down the street for fiction & music because they outgrew their first location. http://www.greenapplebooks.com/

Modern Times. I love this bookstore because it has a great nonfiction / political / sociology / history section and they never try to trick you into buying a book that will offend you. I never would have bought Tim Wise's book White Like Me if I hadn't seen it on the table at Modern Times. I would have just assumed it was some polemic by a cranky white guy who was complaining that other people were ruining his life just because he was white. But because I saw it at Modern Times, I bought it and read it. They're also the ones who introduced me to Paul Farmer's writing. http://www.mtbs.com/

Fields Bookstore. This is a groovy little store that specializes in mystical & spiritual stuff. Very 70s http://www.fieldsbooks.com/cgi-bin/fields/index.html

Alexander Books. I really appreciate this little store for the fact that they have a really thorough African American section. I love Bernard, who curates that section and who gets very interesting writers in for lunchtime talks http://alexanderbook.indiebound.com/

But really for Books By And About Black People Everywhere, there's nothing like Marcus Books. Stop by but be sure to budget a fair amount of time. It's easy to get into conversation with the owner and stick around for an hour or more. http://www.marcusbookstores.com/

Okay, how about some shoes.

Gimme Shoes http://www.gimmeshoes.com/stores.php I can't even go to these stores any more. I love the shoes so much that I want to buy all of them.

Paolo Shoes: Beautiful and high quality, and sometimes they're on SALE! http://paoloshoes.com/

Heidi Says: http://www.heidisays.com/ Heidi has several stores, and the shoe salon pretty great.

Basically, you want to wander through Hayes Valley and Fillmore. There are a ton of great, unusual, and interesting stores for clothing and shoes and whatever else your little heart desires

Good food, too.

This one is my favorite -- this is where I bought the fancy shmancy stuff I sent my niece when she was a baby http://www.mudpie-sf.com/

But I would say that in general you'll find lots of great baby stuff (fairly expensive, though) if you wander around Union Street (not Union Square) or Hayes Valley.

I pass a couple of maternity shops on my way to work but I have to admit that I don't focus on them closely LOL

I don't think this one is specific to SF: http://www.apeainthepod.com/

This one always looks groovy: http://www.japaneseweekend.com/

A friend of mine worked here for a while: http://www.momsthewordmaternity.com/

I am not the world's biggest fan of R&G Lounge but I am biased against it because I had one bad food experience there. The food wasn't bad, just not to my liking. West Lake beef soup. Hated it. Seriously, it was one of the only foods I've eaten as an adult that made me gag.

Well, maybe we should also mention Than Long. I'm not a huge crab fan but other people are and I think it's indisputable that crab lovers love Than Long. http://www.anfamily.com/Restaurants/thanhlong_restaurant/displaypages/homepage.html

I have a friend that lives right around the corner. That grocery store is a little bit shady, but damned if I didn't get some good ingredients for lasagna for cheap on the first day of the last NFL season. Isn't there a great sandwich place right there too? Miller's?

SF has really been a trial for me all these years after growing up in LA. Most of the Mexican food here is actually made by Salvadorans. That's why it was such a relief to find Tortilla Heights.

It's new to us, relatively new to the city:

www.bakerandbanker.com

The braised cod was out of this world. Mr W had the flounder and couldn't stop praising it.

I understand that to get a table for 7:30 on a Saturday night, you have to make reservations 3 weeks in advance. It's worth it.

Off the Grid (food trucks and foodie schitt) @ Fort Mason Fri.

Golden Gate Park is hella relaxing if the sun is warm.

I would take a ferry ride over to Sausalito and have lunch.

still morning sick as a dog (but all day). at any rate, i went for a cousin's graduation and we didn't do much more than very touristy things like the wharf and Alcatraz. we stayed in a nice hotel in San Mateo. it was very nice there, just SOOOO expensive.

hope you have a time though.

i'm generally not really into tours
i do want to hit up the wharf but that's because it's suppose to have good seafood, lol. i'm a pregnant foodie man.

i do want to see golden gate bridge but i think it's near where i'm going anyway so i'll see it eventually. i just love walking around the city and finding shit. although i will say these hills are a BITCH! we took the BART to our hotel and of course it was up a huge ass hill and here's my fat pregnant ass struggling to pull my suitcase up the hill.

hubby has to work today so when it stops raining i think i may go here: http://www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com/history3.php

also one of my friends happens to be in town so i'm going to try and link up with her.

nah not tours tours. just touristy things like sight seeing. you know. yeah the wharf is dope for seafood i been there on my few trips to SF

it's weird it's like I visited during college and when I was like 25 with folks from LA who moved up there all I did was drink, shroom and smoke and go to amoeba and make music. Never really saw the city like I should have. although the Malcolm X Jazz Fest in Oakland was the shit.
