tell someone you suspect they implied michael is gay
Nov 04th 2011
8
that seemed pretty implied
Nov 04th 2011
345
      He seemed really, really phobic.
Nov 05th 2011
354
nah he came off more ashamed of his sexuality rather than phobic
Nov 05th 2011
372
I thought Cutty was a little molestery, too at the beginning
Nov 05th 2011
369
the characters didn't really deal with it either.
Nov 04th 2011
9
murdering his boyfriend was definitely more to get at him
Nov 04th 2011
14
they didn't kill his bf b/c he was specifically gay
Nov 04th 2011
21
      we're not on different pages
Nov 04th 2011
23
      and he
Nov 04th 2011
34
           yup
Nov 04th 2011
37
I dunno...
Nov 04th 2011
19
they did that to get at him. not because dude was strictly gay.
Nov 04th 2011
24
I'm trying to remember the episode where they snatched him up
Nov 04th 2011
35
      well that's speculation.
Nov 04th 2011
had Omar been straight, they woulda done the same to his gal
Nov 04th 2011
29
you know what? i was sitting here thinking.
Nov 04th 2011
42
ya'll forget Omar's boy was robbing them with Omar
Dec 29th 2011
380
yeah it really played the background and was kind of a non-issue
Nov 04th 2011
25
lol rawls' gayness was in the background...literally even.
Nov 04th 2011
32
      haha true
Nov 04th 2011
66
Oh, and Brother Mouzone "dealt" with it...
Nov 04th 2011
41
He's one of my favorite and one of the greatest characters of all time
Nov 04th 2011
15
what do you mean by deal with/dont deal with?
Nov 04th 2011
17
As gay crazy as some of your people are?
Nov 04th 2011
22
and Omar wasn't 1 of those gays who keeps it to himself.
Nov 04th 2011
26
im so confused now
Nov 04th 2011
43
don't let me search okp for the gay threads started by straight guys
Nov 04th 2011

Nov 04th 2011
27
he didn't like it but he did respect him
Nov 04th 2011
30
sure. but a scene with him talking to his 2nd wife woulda been cool.
Nov 04th 2011
38
Mouzone was smart; he knew his opinion didn't matter really
Nov 04th 2011
39
Mouzone is a very under loved character imo
Nov 04th 2011
44
i don't think his lack of screen time was just "part" of it.
Nov 04th 2011
52
there was no charisma to mouzone...and he was hardly on screen
Nov 04th 2011
68
Mouzone was also (maybe) the most unrealistic character in the show
Nov 04th 2011
71
that'd be an interesting blog post, who's the least realistic
Nov 04th 2011
78
My list of unbelievable characters:
Nov 04th 2011
93
As a character it would be Mouzoune, as a story it has to be Omar
Nov 04th 2011
95
do you know anybody in the Nation?
Nov 04th 2011
334
Mouzone is probably tied with Omar as one of my faves from
Nov 05th 2011
356
Mouzone and Omar are DEFINITELY kindred spirits
Nov 05th 2011
370
he told how he felt when he reunited Omar with his bf he took 1 look and...
Nov 04th 2011
116
He didn't say that. His errand guy said that.

Nov 04th 2011
75
there are so many more degrees of homophobia than that.
Nov 04th 2011
96
Naw, it's not that
Nov 04th 2011
63
but the point is there isn't anything to deal with
Nov 04th 2011
70
i'd like to see someone else debate this point
Nov 04th 2011
87
exactly! His homosexuality was more like the niggas gangsta as fuck and....

It's like folks that normally put gay people in some sort of evil box, suddenly decide this guy is cool enough to care for.

It's a dumb circular reference.

You gonna name the one famous DC/Baltimore gangsta that is famous and make the argument that most hustlers are gay?

that's some dumb shit. Cats need to formulate a thought before they start typing.

In what way is it dumb? It's the truth, there were & still are a good number of homosexual hustlers out there then & now, I'm not making the shit up...it ain't a fairy tale it is what it is.

Maybe YOU should do some more research before trying to make things into more than they are.

I don't see what's so dumb about it. Pretty sure he just used him as a real life example of somebody who people think is gay so u can see how its dealt wth irl

The point that he's makin that I think u missed is that a lot of dudes in the streets get down like that. They may not be out and open about it 24/7 like Omar but it happens

Like Teef said i think most dudes have a issue with dudes being effeminate if anything

>and then names the dude that partially inspired the entire
>series.
>
>It's a dumb circular reference.
>
>You gonna name the one famous DC/Baltimore gangsta that is
>famous and make the argument that most hustlers are gay?
>
>that's some dumb shit. Cats need to formulate a thought

that you say a lot of old hustlers are gay and you name just one- the MOST famous one... that person being gay doesn't make that statement true.you can't just say a lot of people are anything and cite one person who might be the anomaly and not the rule.

this is why k_orr made the Obama reference 'a lot of high ranking Democrats are black... like Barack Obama.'
obviously he's the highest ranking Dem in the country but he doesn't prove that there is a major number of blacks within the party in the highest ranks.'

every high ranking black democrat for the statement to be true? For the sake of brevity I would say, "a lot of high ranking dems are black, like obama" and keep it moving. Or do you think his statement is false? If you thought it was false why didn't you just say that?

I've given up on folk following or having logical arguments on here, really.

Sometimes sentiment is enough to combat all the noise, to bring clarity. Most of the time it isn't.

This means you can't have a discussion here, on OKP, without exhaustively defining terms, syntax, context, etc EACH time you have a conversation here.

EACH! TIME!

Otherwise eitehr 3 replies, 3 hours, 3 days, 3 months or 3 years later someone will say, "YOU SAID THIS!!?!?!"

Then that vapid fool will tell someone else you said it. And it becomes true not only in this space but wherever that conversation travels and matters.

I mean, dude, very plainly, said "MOST..." I'm not sure of any way to check if he's correct.

Is there a database to check every single hustler at every level of hustling in the United States and their sexual preference and practice? If not, how can we know?

The conversation should have stopped right there.

There's nothing else that can be said until we know what he means by that and what evidence he has to back that idea up.

You see all this nonsense I had to type out?

I could have left it at one line. One line should be sufficient.

NOT HERE.

Especially the lurkers. They're the worst.

Ever had something you said on here come back to you offline?

Lord have mercy.

plus chris feeling uncomfortable around him led me to believe he suspected cutty was a toucher. i know that was partly because the only father like figure he had molested him, but something about cutty was a little off.

his adversaries would spend time calling him a cocksucking motherfucker or a faggot while omar was steadily ganking them. but this was out of anger. it ain't like they were committing hate crimes against him throughout the show.

it was one of those things that didn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

...they did purposely torture and kill his boyfriend season 1, and then leave his corpse on display for the whole neighborhood. But that may have been a function of him working with Omar rather than specifically being someone Omar was fucking.

If I recall, it was because Wallace and Bodie (or was it Poot?) saw him playing pinball and recognized him from the stick-up a few episodes before. So yeah, they probably snatched him because he was with Omar, but I imagine the torture/display of the corpse may have been due to the nature of the relationship.

"well that's speculation."

but the torture was probably because they were drug dealing killer criminals.

they were psychopathic and had little regard for human life.

so i'd imagine the boyfriend of their enemy weighed very low on their "care about" scale.

its not like he was just an innocent person who was close to Omar. Nah he was there when they stole the stash at the low rises. Thats how Poot and Wallace recognized him. So had Omar been straight would he have his girl running and gunning with him? If she was then Avon and crew would definitely go after her. But I doubt it if she was just his girlfriend.

how much should we invest into a fictional character?

he's who he is, his character's personal qualities are either redeeming or deplorable

are gay characters supposed to make us feel some sort of way?

On okp,it's not even calling someone a fag out of anger and ignorance, it's like some intentional I wanna fuck with them type steez.

but yeah Omar had a coolness that transcended his sexuality, his story arc was more about him being a stickup man than being gay, they just showed glimpses of his private life as well

and I dont know that many straight dudes who watched Noah's Arc, self included

Mouzone was calculated enough to know that it was pointless expressing any sort of opinion about his sexuality, because Omar was so cold and driven by his code. He's the only person Omar ever beefed with that didn't use his sexuality as a reason to slander him.

But maybe I just don't have a feel for the "black man on the street".

A community that is pretty homophobic and socially conservative, rides for the gay robber of drug dealers....but the Farrakhan with a gat prototype doesn't get nearly the same kinda love.

Part of that is of course the amount of screen time...but still.

i think it was all of it. me & my mom & ex all watched and discovered the wire together and we all related to omar & mouzone the most & wanted more mouzone.

i was a bit disappointed when they popped string cause i knew it meant he was done.

but then i've got Robert 3X for a brother.

some of those brothers are tough man. Mouzone carrying a gun is potentially the only unrealistic part about his character, but in context of the show he was historically accurate. State and Federal governments did contract the Nation to clean up select inner-cities in the mid-90's. They took that concept and changed it to the Barksdale crew hiring Mouzone instead of the government.

the series.

I think I get that guy.

Especially in the context of where some cats went from VARIOUS Islamic-based Black nationalism / empowerment movements over the centuries in the USA into crime and intimidation--creating decades-long crime sprees...

But aside from that (which is location specific ie Chicago, Philly, etc) I think I get his POV.

"Slow train comin,'" right?

You can't fight the inevitable (in terms of the decaying of the community and the modes of business that take the place of "legitimate" or "sanctioned" (ha) industry) . Might as well make it all clean.

And he was clean. He did his job clean, has a code, etc. He's a lot like Omar in that regard. Citizens aren't getting capped by them in their vocation.

That alone is a statement. It requires a certain level of skill to be able to work in their field, realize a specific level of efficacy, retain the name that preceeds EACH of them and do it without spillage.

I mean, I think Mouzone and Omar are kindred spirits in some ways. And it makes sense that they went about the business they did in dealing with EACH OTHER in the manner that they did.

Of course they're not into each other's lifestyles. That's not the point.

im not sure if you're trying to say there was a gayness that should have been addressed

or that you feel the overall consensus among blacks is that we hate gays therefore we should not have been riding for omar or speaking about his gayness more than we did b/c we can't stand that shit.

1. i think everyone raised in the West is a homophobe to some degree. i say 'the West' b/c i don't know enough about the rest of the world to comment on their homophobia.

2. yes, that includes me.

3. anyway, that aside, i'm still surprised that the Barbershop is down w/Omar b/c even though he wasn't effeminate, he did make it known he liked boys and was even shown dicking down dudes on screen. i figure the dicking down would be enough to make the Barbershop stop watching The Wire or at least not admit to being down w/Omar. b/c the Barbershop is bugged by queers who talk open about queer shit and who do queer things out in the open. i know b/c i've been in a barbershop when queer shit has happened on TV and seen their reaction. it's usually 'MAN TURN THAT FAGGOT/GAY/QUEER SHIT OFF!!!'

But a lot of y'all are saying he's a bad ass, doesn't matter to most folks that he's gay.

I'm saying that giving Omar a pass, when they normally wouldn't, is a way of not dealing with it at all.

Like if cats didn't like Omar, first thing they would rush to was his sexual orientation. But because they like the character, it's a non-issue. It's such a non-issue that there isn't even that hint of innuendo that our community and okp will ke ke it up over.

I don't read Treblefree's posts enough to know what he's doing it.

I refuse to believe I am the crazy one here.

i agree if he was not a likeable character they'd definitely go for the gay

but he's liked soo...

some like him despite being gay, yes but it's really not central to his character at all. it's just an icing.

i need to rewatch cause i'm usually on point with the details but right now this particular reference is failing me

rawls, was it? was in the gay bar with his otherwise homophobic ass.

was that just a little a-ha for the viewers, or was he ever found out?

When Bubs comes in to confess "killing" his friend, Landsman goes to the Men's Room and sees "Rawls is a cock sucker" scrawled on the wall. He gives a knowing smile/laugh, washes his hands, and leaves. That's about it.

1) it was his way of making Omar, a pretty-much loan wolf, have a romantic connection to the sort of crime he was involved in.
2) it challenged the viewer's own concepts of sexuality stereotypes.
3) it became a non-issue really quickly, just like Kima, just like Snoop.

i went to three high schools.

the first two were predominantly white and suburban, the last was predominantly black and decidedly hood.

granted, i spent very little time at the first two schools (i was at the 3rd one before the second semester of 9th grade), but my school in the hood was MUCH more "open" than the other two.

lots of out teenagers, male and female, in what was one of the most violent high schools in the city.

i know of not one case of gay bashing or the like (not to say there wasn't any). to be fair, there's a whole lot less bullying in general in the hood than in the burbs (because all the violent niggas are busy being violent with each other).

please. thanks.

what would've happened if 2 boys walked around your high school holding hands?

what if they gave each other a peck on the cheek in the hallway before parting? on the lips?

what if 2 boys went to Homecoming w/each other? Prom?

what if 2 boys danced w/each other at an average off-campus house party?

i mean, just how 'open' was this school?

maybe it's more 'open' than i imagine.

anyway, yeah. niggas be tripping. i've seen/heard niggas trip over every example i gave above. all of that is relatively 'innocent' gay shit. that niggas trip over. both in real life and when they see it on TV.

niggs are generally 'okay' w/the gay shit as long as it's abstract. but when it's put in our faces? we trip. we don't mind the queers...as long as they keep it to themselves.

Omar didn't keep it to himself. he was seen being affectionate w/his lovers on screen. that alone would turn off too many niggs i've known. so i'm w/k_orr in his surprise over blacks and our embrace of Omar.

fuck you.

and i ain't tryna overstate like we had a WeHo in the hood.

to be honest, we had a handful of Snoop Pearsons, but zero Omar Littles. the studs claimed sets and publically displayed affection for their girlfriends, but i can't recall any gay male couples.

brothers were OUT, tho. and proud of it. i believe our school had one of the first LGBT clubs in the city, so the presence was felt.

but clearly they didn't have the same comfort as hetero and lesbian couples.

no dismissiveness intended, bro.

Cheryl Swoops, the list goes on. . .i mean, i'm not even sure they cared about the likes of James Baldwin back in the day. for some reason, some pple are/were able to just never have their sexuality become a major point of contention.

sure, even on the show, Omar's character was surrounded by homophobes (although they NEVER called him a cocksucker to his face) but he was also very respected by the streets as well.

maybe blacks aren't as homophobic as it may seem.

nobody cared about Snoop or Kima either.

i ain't gonna say that black people are homophobic as a whole or anything. but let's just say a LOT of black folk got some really fucked up ideas about homosexuality that we can't seem to crawl out of.

but when omar comes up, it's like somebody goes "omar was gay but...".

iont know if they try to ignore and avoid the subject of homosexuality or use it as way to disparage homosexuality.

iont know. like korr said. it's interesting.

can't really explain that selectiveness. but i think blacks as a group have gotten such a bad rep with folk assuming that so many of us are automatically anti-homosexual.

even in the hood, this isn't true. even with the most flamboyant, they may clown out of fun (often times these guys have grown up in the neighborhood and everyone knows them so it's par for the course and dude/chick is used to it) but i've not seen a WHOLE lot of just out and out bashing.

it's very sad and disheartening when it happens though. i was laughing at the illjux video yesterday because i just couldn't believe what a retard that dude was, but i felt sad for the little guy, he looked nervous and worried not even just because he may have been scared, but he was trying to apologize and even thanked the one dude for saying that he would respect him as a gentleman.

In response to Reply # 0

i felt when watching the final montage that the implication was that michael was the new omar. to take it a step further, they even had a pretty girlish/flamboyant looking side kick rolling with him.

i've mentioned this to friends, that i think they're also implying that michael is gay. maybe not.

but when i even ask niggas to CONSIDER it they be getting pissed like "nah! not mike!"

which is interesting as hell to me.

so to then turn around and make him turn out to be gay at the end may not sit well with some viewers.

behaving like a hetero teenager from West Baltimore would.

It would be kinda corny I think to take the Omar/Mike comparison that far, and just a reach for viewers looking to make that connection. Whether he is or isn't who knows, who cares

nothing, i'll tell u

the fact that michael was molested by his brother's father has just an impact on him determinin his sexuality as bein a hood fella amongst a lotta machismo

he coulda been bi
he could not've known
we really don't know how michael was grapplin w/his sexuality
but as a child of molestation
believe me he did

i know males who've been abused that "act out" hypersexually just as girls do

In response to Reply # 167

Not to make light of the situation in real life and those who suffer thru it, but the question posed was about the show "implying" that Mike was gay.

I'm saying that no implication was made, and if the viewers are going ahead and making that thats on them and their own projections. Could he have been gay? Who knows, but to say the show implied it is being dishonest and agenda driven

no teenage kid is running DL schemes that extend to fucking girls just to keep a front

as to what teef said below, the undertone was Michael's stepfather molested him, remember that scene when he came back home and Mike wouldnt tolerate his affection (which is why Chris beat him to bloody death)

They were afraid of that sawed-off shotgun he kept in his coat.

Besides, it wasn't like he was walking around in leotards and lipstick. That kat mostly wore all black, and carried himself like a man. If they would have made him a sissy then I think the perspective would have changed quite a bit.

Omar held hands w/dudes on screen.

Omar had sex w/dudes on screen.

i have seen black ppl refuse to watch daytime TV talk shows (like Maury or Springer) b/c there were gays kissing or holding hands or just talking about gay shit.

so yeah, i think it's odd that 'so many' blacks embraced a character who did so much gay shit on TV.

fuck you.

maybe heightened violence has something to do with it?

is it the difference between seeking out "gay media" (pardon the term) vs. getting a little gayness mixed in with what you were already digging?

back to the point...i'm surprised blacks embraced Omar as much as we did considering he was shown being affectionate w/his lovers on screen. blacks have embraced gays, even out ones, but our souls wince when we see 2 men be affectionate w/each other, let alone being sexual w/each other.

1. Did (black) men wince when they saw Omar kissing men on TV.

2. Why did the black (male) community embrace Omar as a loved character

But they have nothing to do with each other. I'm sure the same people that wince or feel uneasy seeing 2 men making out, also loved Omar. Just fast forward. I don't see why they would "hate" Omar cuz he was gay. That doesn't really happen.

folks reaction to Omar kissing men, whatever it was, wasn't any different than their reactions to any other man-on-man affection shown on screen

there are plenty of other examples of characters/entertainers being "accepted"
and i can't think of any examples of someone being rejected wholesale just for kissing a man (other that at SoWhat's barbershop but whatever)

Fri Nov-04-11 02:54 PM by SoWhat

you haven't.

35 yrs of seeing/hearing my ppl wince when they see my other ppl being affectionate w/each other. 35 yrs of hearing my family members (immediate and extended) express disgust/disdain over expressions of gay love. 35 yrs of hearing/seeing my friends express disdain/disgust of gay affection.

so forgive me if i can't cite an example on which i've based my 'surprise' at black folks embrace of Omar. do me a favor and extend the benefit of doubt.

trust me, i didn't make this shit up. i know it's fun to play Brand New, i do it myself, and you're doing a masterful job of it here. you know what i'm talking about up in here and if you don't, i wonder about your ability to observe the world around you. or maybe you live in some world other than the one i've lived in for 35 yrs.

if i'm too slow on the uptake or you didn't feel like going through the trouble of explaining it to me like i'm stupid, or my questions annoyed you in some way, then maybe YOU should have stfu.

i came here looking for real discourse and to learn something, i even turned my back to k_orrs unproductive (IMO) response to engage you in an effort to understand the point this post was tryin to make.

i cant speak for k_orr but like u said its another luther scenario

its proven time and time again that ppl are less homophobic if they actually know a gay person or have a "personal" relationship with one

but we u kinda sweep the gay aspect under the rug its like u still dont kno a gay person and still able to make blanket (negative) statements and have negative feelings about them

i dont think most Black ppl have anything even close to hatred for gays, but i do think its something that Black folk r way too uncomfy with and we as whole dont want to deal with (gay blacks too as we will be happy keeping the details of lives to ourselves and rationalizing it)

its like ok u ghey thanx for sharing now i dont want to hear anything else about it

is the general acceptance a GOOD thing?

not that heteros are doing homosexuals a favor by being "accepting",
but isn't "dude's a cold-ass killer and I like his code, sowhat about him being gay" at least somewhat of a step forward?

or making it less important, specifically in the case of omar

its just all steps and respecting ppl's right to govern themselves as they see fit

the most powerful thing i did for myself was accepting that there is always going to be someone that doesnt like or want to be (too) bothered with gayness and that thats ok and its nothing to be emotional about (angry, sad, etc) it just is what it is

how much accepting/acknowledging is proper?

i just feel like there's this *line* somewhere here in this convo

like, its not okay to make a big deal out of a person or character being gay

but it also seems like there might be a problem with "brushing aside" a character's sexuality?

i dunno i guess my question is what does perfect acceptance look like?

if i'm exposing my ignorance right here, i at least hope its to a positive end

In response to Reply # 251

as anymore than MY opinion

it is a bit of a fine line so i get where ur coming from but with this its not necessarily a bad thing to make a big deal of him being gay (in fact the only ppl saying that its not a big deal in this post r str8 folks)

its not a bad thing tho, if it leads to a shift in thought or opinion "thats a bad ass gay nigga (hmm maybe all gay dudes arent soft or feminine)"

the reason why its not bad here is because the prevailing idea is that gay ppl are mostly that stereotype

now if that stereotype didnt prevail then it would be offensive to be like "wow hes gully for a gay guy or wow i cant believe hes gay"

so making a big deal of him being ghey and that big deal producing a change in thought is a GOOD THING IMO

but again it varies, for some they dont want to be ID by their orientation and some its very important to be

i think that by muting it or downplaying it tho, u almost dont accept that there person is gay, like ignoring a pink elephant in the room cause its uncomfortable to deal with, out of sight, out of mind and no change or "betterment" is produced

this is practical opinion, just like why was it a big deal that Obama was elected US president, weve all always thought that a Black man could do that right? why make a big celebration cause hes Black then...but it was a big deal cause weve never had a Black pres before and many ppl thought it would never happen

now tho it would be absurd to be like a " a black man cant be president" or if/when we have another Black pres "wow i cant believe that Black guy got elected, who woulda THUNK"

I don't really care about seeing 2 gay guys holding hands or kissing (even tho my visceral reaction is "huh thats different"). I also don't like seeing women give birth, I don't like watching rape scenes, I don't like watching old people do any sexual shit and I don't like watching fat people do sexual shit. All that gets the same shudder reaction from me, but I recognize their right to do so.

I'm fully accepting of gay people and their right to love and be happy like everyone else. I was just explaining that just because i feel uncomfortable watching a really steamy gay scene doesn't mean I'm against it. In general who wants to see other people having sex, unless you have a hard on for one of the people involved.

Even tho I would much rather watch 2 guys making out then an old or fat couple. I'm shuddering just typing that lol

Treblefree came out on here and and was met with support, not "fucking faggot, go die somewhere"

like, niggas werent preoccupied with Omar being gay because his sexuality wasnt what defined his role. it was what made a tough stickup man dynamic, his sexuality broke conventional thought and stereotypes of who a gay dude could be. past that, when he was in the streets gay never came to mind, it never registered until he was with his hispanic partner

and no one cared about whether Luther Vandross was gay because he made such good music about love that was removed from any traces of sexual preference (compared to Sylvester who was flaming on record)

imo.

we're not any more or less homophobic than ___.

that being said, as i mentioned above, i've been in the barbershop when 2 dudes kissed on Jerry Springer. the reaction from the fellas was "TURN THAT GAY SHIT OFF, MAN!!" and the channel was changed.

so i'm surprised there wasn't more channel changing when Omar was doing what he did w/his lovers.

that's why i'm w/k_orr on this.

fuck you.

Then his character would create a stronger emotional conflict for most homophobes.
I remember him to be a top, but maybe I'm just assuming this was the case.

i think he was accepted in part b/c he was the assumed top. probably b/c he was usually w/guys who were prettier and more effeminate.

btw, in the real gay world the nelly/queeny/fishy types often top the butch/manly/masculine types. i've seen that so often that i try not to assume anything about sexual role based on a guy's outward behavior. it took a (big-dicked) drag queen top to really break that down for me. LOL

fuck you.

more in line with "jail gay" stereotypes than anything right? That was part of what I was thinking. Jail gay is acceptable for a notorious Black street dude, as he's still assumed to be the one with the masculine power in all his relationships.

Actually I just scrolled down and Forte has already put this out there, but I'll leave it anyway.
