you cant divide the 48 until after you've worked the parenthetical. 2 included

its not 48/2 and then 9+3
its 48 and then 2(9+3)
2(9+3) is one thing

48÷(2*9+2*3) = x
48÷(24) = x
2 = x

You can look at 48 as being 2*24. Then you can cancel the 2's from the top and the bottom.

When we see "2(9+3)" that automatically means 2x9 and 2x3
I haven't done algebra in HELLA long yet I still remember that for some

I don't know why it's so hard for people to see. It's just a fraction. 48 in the numerator and 2(9+3) in the denominator. 48/24=2

so after you do the operation in parenthesis, you continue to follow the order of operations. next applicable operaation is multiplication.

thats math 101

The equation is: 48÷2(9+3)

the next step is to do this:

(48÷2)x(9+3)

like theres no way you can start the equation before doing this

it's 2 multiplied by what's in the parenthesis. if they wanted parenthesis around the 48 and the 2, they would have put them there.

^^^ that's the same equation, how would u do that? would you still multiple 12 times 2?

288 doesn't work... 2 does work however...
with 288 I get 1/72 but with 2 I get 2(which would be correct).

Through some research I'm legitimately seeing both answers.

and you put 48÷2 in parentheses you would get 288... The question is if you should convert the ÷ to / and work to get the denominator first or put 48÷2 or 48/2 in parentheses. That's where the debate lies.

EDIT: With p.e.m.d.a.s./BODMAS multiplication and division are equals so you go from left to right.

I just mentally put the second part in brackets because that's what I'm used to seeing. But correctly using Order of operations the answer is 288. I feel dumb

I can see why this causes such a stir

If you work this problem and replace 2 with X and solve for x... the answer is 2... 288 can't work.... This shit is good, lol. When you use X it forces you to solve the problem by converting to problem from 48 9+3)=2 to 48÷12X=2 to 48/12X to 4/x=2 which makes X=2...

Most of the people getting 2 are using incorrect work. What I showed just now is the ONLY correct way to get 2. Most people are going 48÷2(9+3) to 48÷2(12) to 48÷24 to 2 which that work is wrong although the answer is right.

When you state it as 48 9+3)=2 you can't say 48÷12=2. You are using implicit grouping when you see 9+3).

But technically, 48 9+3)=2 can be transformed to (48/x)*(9+3)=2. Which gives you x=288

that people should use brackets to avoid ambiguous expressions.

But anyway, according to the order of operations as I learned them, it's 288. Division is interpreted as multiplication by the inverse only of the quantity that immediately follows the symbol.

I've had this argument before with other physicists, though. To write the inverse of the quantity 2 pi, for example, I write 1 / (2 pi). Other people get lazy and write 1 / 2 pi. Those people are slobs, and deserve to be misinterpreted.

The 2 (not the 48) is being mutiplied by (9+3), which means the expression in brackets should be in the denominator.

48÷2(9+3) = ????

really looks like

48/(2(9+3))

so the answer should be 2.

The people saying 288 are imagining the (9+3) being multiplied by the 48

i.e.,

(48(9+3))/2

which requires a re-ordering of the terms in order to be unambiguous.

It actually really annoying that ppl don't know to calculate the items in the parenthesis first then multiply.

But it does explain why most ppl around here confuse the shyt outta me...they don't know basic calculation (Niggas adding 1+1 and getting 7, nshyt. WTF.) no wonder their logic is flawed.
