Life is inherently morally ambiguous, contradictory and paradoxical. If questions about virtually any subject having to do with human interaction seem able to be answered with 'yes' or 'no,' or if they seem to fall easily into right/wrong, black/white categories, chances are far greater that we're overlooking some integral issue than that the answer is really that simple.

what an outdated idea!

neither spouse is required to have sex w/the other if they don't want. by the same token, i don't believe either spouse has to remain monogamous if the other won't put out after they'd previously agreed to do so on a regular basis.

fuck you.

i would never think my wife OWES me sex

would i be cool with such a thing? of course not, but on the other hand i see nothing about us being married as entitling me sex

i wouldn't WANT sex someone gave me because they owed it. if my wife doesn't wanna give me something freely (anything, not just sex), then i love her enough to not let the idea pass through my mind that our committment to each others wellbeing....however that applies....is something i should look at like "owe". owe is a term to use when you're talking about a debt (something you deservebased on something you did/do). to me marriage isn't a business arrangement. truth be told, me being married to my wife isn't about what she "owes" me, but moreso about what i'm willing to do for HER...freely and with love

by extension, i wouldn't marry someone that would intentionally do such a thing for the sake of being "mean". using my want/need as some for of tool to punish or control....shoot even using it as some kinda scooby-snack reward. that's not love

outside of all that, thinking someone "owes you" sex (married or not) that is fraught with danger, if for no other reason than: "how are you gonne enforce that little contractual clause?"

if she says no you gonna TAKE it?

i think the idea is scary and dangerous

with all said and done though, eaach couple is free to determine their own "rules"

if a contractual arrangement (i do this, you owe me that in return) is the route they wanna go, good luck to em. not at my crib though

that's why i said the concept is outdated.

back in the day there was no such thing as marital rape in the collective consciousness b/c the idea that a wife owed her husband sex was prevalent. it was believed he had the right to 'take it' from her if she wasn't willing.

fuck you.

believe that sex with a souse is a marital duty. that;s doesn't mean you can rape them any more than if you owe me money i can break in your house and rob you, you dig? at least i don't think so. i think bringing rape in this convo would SERIOUSLY emotionalize the discussion. but that's just me.

i don't know how i feel one way or the other but the people that voted "yes", i'm sure are not condoning rape. read my scenario that i typed to boodaah. this isn't about honey i have a headache not tonight. got me?

include rape. that's why the idea that spouses 'owe' each other sex has been dismissed for the most part.

and i don't see sex as a marital duty, necessarily. i don't think any person has the right to control another person's sex life like that. ideally in a marriage sex is something both partners want equally - neither should be doing it out of obligation or duty, it should be pure desire. if for some reason 1 of them doesn't want sex anymore then some sort of arrangement should be made if the other still wants some sex. i myself would be looking for a divorce if my spouse w/held sex completely and wasn't willing to compromise in some way on the issue b/c sex is that important to me right now. maybe in the future i could be w/o it...i can't see that though.

fuck you.

sex is a marital duty automatically includes rape. *shurg* i just don't. now if we wanna talk rape, that's a different discussion to me. this "could" be brought in to play as one of the reasons soomeone might try to rationaly marital rape. however, the question i asked doesn't make me think of ike taking it from tina in the song booth. btut hen that may be a good thing on my part, cause i see NO excuse for rape. so me thinking of this question and not "automatically "thinking rape maybe a good thing on my part. i just don't like to see discussions over-emotionalized, cause it impedes real progress. so instead of discussing the question we are now discussin rape.

i'm quite sure this issue is covered in pre-marital counseling, and if it's not it should be. i say couples should have frank discussions about sex and sexuality way before they walk down the aisle to make sure they're on the same page about the issue, and the discussions should continue when/if they're needed after the vows are said. no one in the marriage should be making assumptions about the other - there should be clarity. the best way to achieve clarity is open, honest dialogue.

you're saying if a woman does not feel up to sex for whatever reason its assumed that if a man feels he's owed sex he's gonna take it? Now I'm not saying this doesn't happen but your statement seems to allude to it happening all the time. I mean I read blogs of married men and women and the men complain the most about not having sex. Sure what you're saying *might* happen but I still don't see the logic in that me saying sex is owed automatically groups me with agreeing with marital sex.

i never said, or meant that it happens all the time. I am just pointing out the fact that "owing sex" is the excuse some use to rape their spouses - period. Therefore, one should make the effort to specify what they mean. actually after re-reading this post i'm wondering if the word "owing" should be used.

I don't think so. again, after reading the poll it was my first thought. and obviously this post is sex related so rape is part of the issue, i'm sorry. I don't know if y'all don't want to extend your thoughts into that - fine. but it should have been pointed out. to make sure they are both satisfied in the relationship so neither will feel the need to be fullfilled elsewhere! Your mate should want to jump your bones all the time not that it has to go down but you know if your patna got it bad for you and that keeps the relationship strong!

I truely believe it. But its not a male oriented concept. Men owe sex to their wives too. Its all encompassed in that have, hold, sickness, health etc line.

again, it's not a contract

it's a pledge, you're saying "i will do these things" not "i owe this to you"

and i'll ask you like i asked lazy

what happens if you don't "get" what you're "owed"?

>again, it's not a contract

based on the marriage certificate...it IS a contract.

>it's a pledge, you're saying "i will do these things" not "i
>owe this to you"

again if that is the case you could not get divorced because then its not a breaking of the contract. You're viewing this from a purely religous stand point which is probably historically true. But you can't ignore the judicial view and in that case it is a contract and both parties have duties to fulfill. So while I agree it is a "pledge" its still a "contract".

>i STILL don't see where "owe" comes in

Do you owe it to your wife/husband to maintain employment?
Do you owe it to your wife/husband to maintain a certain level of health i.e. not letting yourself go to the point you aren't you anymore or the you they married?
Do you owe it to your wife/husband to assist in the rearing of YOUR children?

>and i'll ask you like i asked lazy
>
>what happens if you don't "get" what you're "owed"?

The court says its grounds for divorce...something about unreconcilable(sp) differences.

for a court. Sex is synonymous with marriage so therefore it can be assumed thus doesn't need to be in the marriage certificate/contract.

in college i took a class taught by 1 of the guys who published the most extensive survey to date about American's sex practices (Edward Laumann of the Univ of Chi - the book is called "Sex In America"). in that class i learned about the # of married couples that don't have sex. i can't quote a figure...but like you until that point i assumed all married couples had sex.

all i'm saying is sex doesn't HAVE to be part of marriage. traditionally it is an expectation, yes - and that's why it's such a source of trouble in so many marriages, b/c ppl walk into the marriage w/preconceived notions about sex and often aren't able to lose them. this idea you have that the couple owes each other sex (and really i bet it's that the wife owes the husband) is one of those preconceived notions that can produce trouble.

fuck you.

then yeah. that's on her. if she makes a commitment to you to have sex on a regular basis (whatever that means...'regular' could mean daily, weekly, monthly, bi-annually, annually, etc) then she should live up to it.

i've said up and down this post that it's up to the couple involved to work out an arrangement about sex - anything from no sex between them at all to regular sex between them and only them or even involving sex w/ppl other than themselves.

hence the reason why 'infidelity' can be cited as a reason for divorce

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Time's love always turns to hate. As children, time comes and envelopes us, lingers by our side, refusing to leave. When our souls are young, time is our most ardent admirer. Yet children push it away. They want so badly to hurry up the world. Time shakes it head at our folly because it knows what we do not; that in youth, time must take it's time.
So time clicks by slowly, so slowly in fact that we take our eye off it until one day we're adults and suddenly time is a fast car, and now it races away, quickly, sharply, never failing to taunt us with it's pace, mocking us as we try to grasp and hold onto it. It's shocking. Time was once our friend and now time is our enemy.

you folks post about sex on a regular basis, and when it comes to marriage you think to have a right to regulate the sex output between you and your spouse. how ridiculous does that sound?

i didn't make two points i made a general statement. we have a society that lacks self-control when it comes to sex, and when folks get married they all of the sudden gain some self-control. i hear from friends of mine that deal with this very issue.

no need to fall out about this man.

You can't ever control people. No one ever owes you a thing, and you can't make anyone do anything for you. All you can do is try to influence decisions. I you make sex fun for your partner, they may want to do it again. If it's unenjoyable for your partner, they may stop. If they stop, you might leave (or get a mistress). The thought of you leaving may make your partner try to have more sex. The thought of you having a mistress may make them get a lawyer.

Sex ain't like a Visa bill, nobody owes anyone anything.

Everyone has the opportunity for greatness, not fame, but greatness, for greatness only requires service--Martin Luther King Jr
