i play softball with some folks that work at the W hotel. i'm the only non W employee on the team (a friend works there and they needed an extra player) and man those folks are totally inappropriate! the stories i hear at happy hour and the things i see...i could never work in the service industry. too much for me.

but I'm not so surprised at this. Political correctness here (Aus) is equated with tolerance, in the 'I appreciate your culture' type of way. So, it is like this is really a form of political correctness, even though it probably shouldn't be for those with a little perspective on such things. (In Australia, for example, there would be very little 'wrong' with coming to some kind of 'theme'/costume party in blackface--unless some other australian has a different view on this?.)

These people aren't going to think of themselves as racist at all--'how can I be racist, I'm showing how much I love your ethnic group??'


still it's hard to become accustomed to this. my god.

What I want to know is does anybody voice opposition or feel strange about it? Are people afraid of losing jobs or gaining a bad reputation with management? People just don't take it all that seriously?

What I should have said is each time I come across something like this I'm shocked anew, despite having participated in such a thing myself (I remember in primary school, in 1992, high off of Keating's multiculturalist zeal, the teachers gave us something like this to do--we had to dress up as an 'ethnic group of our choice' and parade around the front basketball court. (Shamefully, and against my will--not out of political opposition but just because I thought it was stupid and embarrassing, I was only 5 years old--I went as an Indian.) I walked through the school again recently, only to see the same thing being advertised, but this time with ethnic cuisine.)

there is definitely a lot of racial insensitivity in australia but i don't think it's necessarily malicious. i think world food days and such programmes are basically well-meaning and inclusive, though they may appear gauche to outsiders.

(btw, i was born and raised in melbourne but moved to sydney when i was 15.)

yeah. I agree that the racial insensitivity stuff is on the whole not maliciously intended (which doesn't necessarily make it any better) and I think that Australians mostly don't really think too much about it. While Americans may see political correctness as a curtailing of freedom of speech, we see it more as making something out of nothing (e.g. 'I was only joking') and kind of introducing harsh legalistic rules into what we believe should be more informal laid-back ways of relating to each other.
