"****?uestlove Appreciation Post*****"
Tue Oct-07-08 10:43 AM by Damali

Imagine building this big house, that you live in ( but you're hardly ever home)...you do drop by from time to time tho...and you let lots of other people live there. most of the time, when you're home, your house guests are polite, but sometimes, increasingly so, you walk into your OWN HOUSE and mofos greet you like 'fuck you! what the fuck is you doing here? oh you think you special just because you BOUGHT THIS COUCH I'M SLEEPIN ON?" or when new guests want to hang, they scare them off on some "why you wanna come up in this shithole?"...but you keep paying the mortgage anyway cuz the respectful and funny houseguests make it all worthwile or cuz you just like the house...

I just want to say thank you to him...not just for providing this unique, one-of-a-kind internet extravaganza called Okayplayer, but for making time to talk with us sometimes and tell us treasured stories from his life.

that post that's up now...i don't know about y'all but i've been enjoying myself so much reading his stories. they are just so real and he's not afraid to make fun of himself a bit. it's so cool to have a glimpse behind the curtains of a life that i will probably never know (and part of me kinda doesn't want to)...and even just remembering times when he was kind to me personally...i don't know..all this is just to say a heartfelt thank you, man.

perhaps we could use this post to tell some nice stories about meeting ?uestlove? dunno..

d

I don't even know if there are such a thing, but there need to be. lol

He's been cool to me the handful of times I've met him, and always keeps me entertained on a dancefloor, plus he's kinda alright on the drums, and he's been instrumental in some of my favorite music. And the icing on the cake: he's created this crazy antfarm that is OKP.

Cheers to ?uest!

He's always been hella nice. I first met him outside the House of Blues after the okayplayer tour. He introduced himself as Ahmir, I asked him to sign the drumstick that I had caught. He started to write, then scribbled it out and said he had started to write his password to okayplayer by accident, haha.

Another time, it was the night before The Roots were playing in Chicago and my wife (GF at the time) and I went to this party that Jazzy Jeff was DJ'ing at. Saw ?uest there, went to say hi and introduce my girl. I told him to have a good show and I was sorry I was gonna miss it (waited too long, sold out), he said to email him and his assistant and he would put me on the list. Ended up being one of my favorite Roots shows ever. It was the warm up show for the Dave Chappelle Block Party and they had Kool G Rap and Kane there to perform BOOM, Erykah was there too. I was so greatful for that.

But yeah, as far as the site goes. I've been here for 8 years and made some life long friends. I mean Will and squeeg were groomsmen at my wedding. He puts up with A LOT of idiots who go out of their way to bash him and his art for free on his site/dollar and is still cool enough to treat us with the great stories in that post. Aside from being a great artist, I really appreciate how he cares for the fans and I will forever support what he does.

But to answer your question..... FOH.

NYC, ya'll remember the early days of Rareform?
Quest spun downtown at this spot near the Holland Tunnel?
what was the name of that club?
we CLOSED that shit.
nobody left till he got off the tables.
and there was this sort of euphoric high all the way home.
i remember i rode the train back to the BX with Prov and Desus
and to passeers by, we prob DID look high.
the energy was just really cool.
those are some of my best NYC memories.
all due to this really dope DJ.
i had no idea up until then that he was so dope on the turntables.

met him too many times to start keeping count now.

first time officially was in 1993 tho...before DYWM dropped.

before that i tossed some change in his hat on south street while he played the buckets (i truly thought bul was homeless, i mean look at him, lol...j/k)

and of course, the (re) wouldn't have been possible without his assistance...well, it still would have happened but it woulda been lame.

thanks homie...for everything over the years.

it was 1995/96 at UVa Memorial Gym. They were opening for the Fugees. Nothing really stupendous happened. Them cats walked into the back of the gym from the parking lot and I was in the hallway so I stuck out my hand and said whaddup. He was cordial, but low-key. Cool enough cat and they rocked it obviously.

in atl at one of his dj'ed shows (the spot on Ponce-close to Dugans)...i had gotten there early cause the spot was by my job and i didnt want to go home...and i was thinking on the way over what i would say to him if i ran into him...cause i would want him to see that i wasnt a fair weather roots fan...that i wasnt a snot not rookie...that i could discuss pre-96 hip hop....that even though he may not know my alias, i had been reading on okayplayer for like 10 years...hell, i actually got most of his jokes...and then it happened...he walked over to bar to ask the bartender something RIGHT beside where i just so happened to be enjoying a cold heineken...my moment of truth...

me: "excuse me, questlove..."
?: *pauses*
me: *pauses*
me: "i appreciate the music you make."
?:
me:
?: "alright, well i gotta get going, but, thanks."
me: "you're welcome."

in the end, i guess i just didnt want to look like a groupy...but he seemed appreciative of my comment...or maybe he was just happy that im not that talkative...

The artists, ?uest included, do get a benefit from collecting like-minded people (read: "consumers") in a space where they can promote material, sell ads, etc.

Granted, he goes above-and-beyond with the interaction. Not too many successful artists who do that.

I think the "we're living in his house" metaphor was a bit of a stretch, but I understand what ya'll are getting at. There's certainly no need to be disrespectful to the man.

in fact, nothing is ever 100% altruistic. the giver ALWAYS gets something out of the giving. whether it's a sense of joy, a boost in their self-esteem, a tax break, whatever.

I don't think this is a stretch at all. The early crew responsible for OKP (sorry, I don't know all of them by name so I can't run down the list) put in a lot of time and money (ads are a relatively new thing on OKP) to keep the site running. Came out of pocket to build this place that we call home. So its really a good metaphor.

You bring up a good point though, it is definitely a promotional tool as well as a forum. But yeah there is really a personal interest at stake and I think that comes through.

peace

I think the original metaphor suggests that users are somehow taking advantage of ?uest by visiting this site. I've seen that idea suggested here before in different ways. The relationship isn't quite as imbalanced as that.

Sure we wouldn't have collected *here* without him and those that built and maintain the site, but we would've been somewhere on the net looking for hoodies and hats, so why not here? Maybe the site is a loss-leader in the great OKP empire, maybe not. But either way it's invaluable as a tool for targeted promotions.

If anything, I think of ?uest as an extremely patient, generous, funny, tolerant, and informed record-store owner...who also happens to be famous. And we're all hanging around the shop leafing through old vinyl, talking shit, and making it marginally worth him keeping the doors open. For that, I appreciate the shit (c) Cee Lo

it was during that magical time where Black Lily was at the Wetlands every Sunday...one night a bunch of okps went to Waverly Diner after the show...this was around 3am. we pretty much fillin' up the place cuz there was 10-12 of us. ?uest shows up and hangs out...talks/laughs with us...then pays all our checks. at the time, i was just blown away by the whole thing...the generosity with not only his wallet, but his time...chillin with us instead of bandmates/friends.

oh and my favorite Black Thought story (since it just popped into my head)

went to see the Roots at the Knitting Factory...i got there a little late and don't really remember what song was playing..i found my way up sorta near the front but not all the way. i was about 5 or 6 rows back, lost in the crowd (or so i thought). BT is rhyming then in the middle of it, he sees me and gives me a head nod and a wave..i was like huh? i mean i've met him before and i figured he sorta kinda knew who i was but we'd never had an actual convo or anything. dunno, that just really surprised me and i thought it was cool

Cos in so many ways I think he'd be an awesome person to be around.
Music knowledge alone.

And I've never seen him act like a dick--even though he may have had good reason to!

I wish he would come up to Vancouver JUST ONCE when I'm not already booked!

And I NEVER celebrity gush--but I do over him.

Afro took a pic of my T-shirt, because it was a LA reunion Tee, brother was mad cool, put me on the guest list for a gig at Jazz cafe next day too.
He did a set a plastic people in the week after the gig, he started to play some R Kelly noise, me and my bredren was like, 'lets jet'. Went up to the booth, to say thanx, Thought tried to intercept like, not now, I said to Thought in patois, I ain't no groupie, he looked me up and down and nodded, touched Afro on the arm, thanked him for the link for the gig.
Came on Okayplayer, a few days later and stated that he did a wack set, Afro called me a cocksucker...lol. I still laugh at that up to this day.

79. "my 'i met questlove' story"
In response to Reply # 0
Tue Oct-07-08 02:16 PM by Trace

i put this in the other post before i saw this one

the first time i saw the roots was in cincinnati
back when i was in college
this was 2001/2002
me & 3 friends

we got there waaaaaaay way early because we wanted good standin spots
so we standin out in the cold
some white boy comes down the street pointing back towards the corner and says: 'questlove is in that music store back there'
we like
'OH WORD?!'
& we scoot on off to the store

sure nuff, there he is, lookin for/at drumsticks
i was sooo star struck, and my poker face is terrible
in my heart im thinking 'OMG, THERE'S QUESTLOVE!!'
but in my head im like 'play it cool. look at the nice guitars displayed about the store.'
somewhere lines get crossed and my expression clearly says 'OMG LOOK AT THE GUITARS!!!!!!!11?!1'

questlove sees said expression, rolls his eyes and says,
'do yall come here often?'
i mean, come on!
as if three girls, one of whom is in unwalkable stilettos and the other of whom looks like she's never even seen musical instruments before
dont belong in a music store or something. talk about profiling!!

so, girl in the stilettos gives him something to sign, and he notices my shirt. it had a picture of gary coleman wearing a set of headphones and said 'sucka mc' beneath it

he says 'i like that shirt' or 'that's a nice shirt,' or something along those lines. i pointed to my other friend, since she'd gotten it for me as a gift. then we said somethin that made him laugh, & we left.

towards the end of the show quest lifts his drumsticks in the air and gives them the 'im abt to throw these into the crowd' shake. he sees us in the front row. he looks me in the eye. i smile big and point to my shirt, because he loved my shirt, so how cld he not give me the drumstick?? we bonded over gary coleman!

then he rolls his eyes at me, turns to my friend in the stilettos, and throws it to her.

wtf.

i still like him tho.

i met ?uest in seattle, of all places, back in '01 i think. i was there on vacation and was hanging out with dove, who took us to some hole-in-the-wall club where the roots were performing that night. after the show, dove drags me "backstage" (aka the back of the club) to say hi. ?uest said he was hungry and of course dove knew of some 24-hour diner where we (me, dove, ?uest, and some seattle okp whose name i've forgotten -- if you're reading this, i'm sorry!) could grab some food.

it's my first night in seattle, i'm tired from the flight, i've never been to the city and i have no idea where i am, and yet here i am at this diner having breakfast with ?uest at 1 or 2 in the morning. good times.

so yeah, props to ?uest for giving me somewhere to go during the day and for broadening my circles of associates/peeps i kick it with at shows...lol

just sayin'.

Is when my nigga wanted to interview him for VIBE. Now, you gotta understand that this nigga is talented but one of the most scatterbrained niggas I know when it comes to shit.

If I THINK I've noticed anything about ?uest is that he respects folk on top of their shit.

well, after dropping a name or too and hounding my nigga got this last minute interview requested.

asked me to tape it.

little did that nigga know my battery was dead on my cam.

not only was my battery dead, but instead of getting to the business of interviewing ?uest, my nigga starts to dap up Kamal. Nigga, *I* was vexed behind that.

Dragging me in the middle of this shit on some friend shit...and then making me look unprofessional. lol. oh well. that's my nigga.

so I was getting blown up in the club and hurridly tried to set up to take pics instead of video with my dead ass camera...

that nigga Quest took one look at the camera and was like, hold up...this id video?

and made this face:

http://i36.tinypic.com/qpqjuv.jpg

Then was gone.

we set up a trap at a local eatery for part two of trying to get the interview, but...

Niggas is niggas, man. And to be honest I was like, fuck it. I just ate my chicken and had my beer. It wasn't my story.

Can this be an annual holiday? I mean we can appreciate his work year round but we have to hide it behind hate and then all flip the lights on when he walks in on October 7 and yell surprise!

I really don't know what I'd do without their live show or this board.

Seen them twenty some maybe thirty times. The Roots on a bad day is a great show. The Roots on a good day means you'll never miss another. Of course without the Roots every other act would have an easier time to impress me.

And this board? My god the amount of knowledge on the most random of things is incredible. I can ask anything and have a response in 20 minutes.

I'm thankful for quest sharing both of these families with me.

See ya, JAK

I've met him once, at a meet and greet in Berkeley. It was really fast and we couldn't take pictures! He was very sweet making silly faces at me while snapping pictures as I was walking away.

I love his skills, I love the roots! Their music was the soundtrack to my twenties! When I turned 30, I wanted to commemorate him/them and got this tattoo. http://s20.photobucket.com/albums/b222/dulce45/bday/?action=view¤t=quest.jpg

for that alone, I have to give the ?uest *daps*, but beyond that I like the fact that he periodically lurks on OKP and shares stories, pics & opinions every now and then. He doesn't come off as being, "above it all" and to me that shows respect for the people who post on or visit OKP.

Let my sig speak for me, when I choose silence.

that's like giving your SO a card for their birthday, and inside you write: I love you for who you are but you wouldn't be who you are without me.

Like really? you couldn't save that for another day?

Is that the communication that goes on between ?uest and the local residents of OKP rewards BOTH PARTIES. I agreed wholheartedly with about 98% of what you said above but when you alluded during the original post to how much of a blessing it is that he makes time out of his busy schedule to speak with us, I felt someone had to remind you that the blessing actually goes BOTH ways. That's what I meant when I said that we ENRICH his life LIKE HE DOES OURS. I don't see why that had to be taken out of context right here:

>that's like giving your SO a card for their birthday, and
>inside you write: I love you for who you are but you wouldn't
>be who you are without me.
>Like really? you couldn't save that for another day?

been to mad shows, of course. i'll go every time they're near, if i can.

been mad close (in proximity) to quest a couple times, course he don't know wtf i am, but it was cool for me.

first time was back in the summer of, shit i don't know, early 00s. the roots did the tour with n.e.r.d. and oar, i saw 'em at the nissan pavillion. but after the show quest dj'd at saki, and my boy was a manager there. we got there late as shit cause we got lost comin' from the show but i got down in time to hear him spin a couple tracks, right by the dj booth. me and my boy actually walked out the club at the end of the night with thought and them.

2nd time was in DC at constitution hall, day before my birthday in '07. me and my wife made the trip, just the two of us. i was out in the hall gettin' a beer when the band came marching in. i was hype.

no fan boy-o

what i didn't tell folks is how humble he was when I met him. Like, I couldn't even muster up what I really wanted to say...

(me begging some lady who was like the gatekeeper to the band to let me go into the party room to meet ?uest)

me: please!! I'm like a real fan of his, just give me two minutes man.

her: sorry, we can't let you back there.

me: dude, you don't understand.

my friends shouting at her: either let him in or kick us out... we trying to get home, its late! come on, he won't shut up about this unless you let him talk to ?uest.

her (frustrated that the three of us took up about 5 minutes of her time with nothing but "please please please"): ok, here he comes.

*?uest walks out, lady whispers something to him (probably, "here is a fan, say hi and get your ass to the bus")

me: . . . *GULP* ... um, I just wanted to say that I notice why Knuckles is important after tonight's show. I'm sorry about that post I made on OKP. I post a lot on there about you...

?: are you PyPy?

me: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (heart races about 500000 bpm) yea...

?: oh, i been wanting to meet you. You shoulda said something, we would have invited you up to play

me: *gasp* *chokes on air*.... (tries to think of something insightful or something to show im a serious player)...i'm a big fan of yours

(mentally slaps self across the head)

?: (in the most humble voice I've ever heard from any of my idols) oh thanks a lot. i'm flattered.

me: like seriously dude, the way you talk about Dilla and Prince . . . that's how I look up to you!

?: (warm embrace) thank you, thank you...

me: got any tips for a young aspiring drummer?

?: just keep it in the pocket man

*I laugh a little*

?: no seriously... i mean, young cats will have a hard time with this... but just keep it in the pocket. Imean now Jay's got that new track out. *he then sings the drum fills to 'show me what you got!'
with all those triplet rolls... but just keep it in the pocket.

me: *wide-eyed star struck*

(at this point, i cannot BELEEEEVE ?uest is actually giving me a drum lesson....)

*blink*

*blink*

("quick, think of something to say to show you are serious about music....quick!!!! I SAID QUICK MOTHERFUCKER QUICK! (c) Chappelle style)

I couldn't think of nuthin that wasn't corny as hell but ?uest was still really humble. I'll probably never forget that night.

And he also got me in free to the Myrtle Beach show despite people in his crew telling him not too. So, even after I was an asshole in Okayartist... ?uest is still very nice to me.

'?uest's the man.'

i rung him up once at Urban Outfitters, but that's about it...his credit card wasn't signed...that bothered me a lil...lol

BUT he's a AMAZING musician like for real....I can always tell when he's playing the drums on somebody's track...He's talented as hell and knows his shit and that's real refreshing to find these days in the music industry...He adds a lot to anything that he touches and brings out the best in other artists and that's what's up!!!

Lil shit like that story he told about Bilal's Sometimes and how it's Umi Says and Bills...shit like that makes me excited about music....I'm still mad I ain't hear that (it's sooo obvious now....lol)

Thanks for the site too!!

Yeah ?uest is that dude. I don't ever go to any other artist fan sites so I don't know how involved other artists are, but dude really gets it. I've met him a few times over the past 10-12 years. One time in Penn Station in NY circa '96, one time I actually had him and 'Riq record drops at the radio station when Illadelph Halflife came out and I've seen him and talked to him about 3 times at shows. Even gave him my card so we could set up a radio interview, he never got back at me though...lol. He's never been over friendly, but he's always been been cordial to me, and thats all you can ask for.

my boy is in a band and was back stage for a Roots show a couple months back. I couldn't go cause it was a festival (aka $$$) plus by the time i tried to get tickets, it was sold out.

my friend sends me a text that night 'i just met Queslove, talked and got a pic!'

dude's gone multi plat, but i told him he'd finally "made it" that night. (back in the early days of his band, i told him he'd never really make it until he met quest.) sonuvabitch.

lots of love and respect.

if only for shit like talking about afrika bambaataa with him on his myspace blog.

peace, fam.

This other girl asked for a pic, I took one of them and she took one of us together. He was really busy so I knew this was my one opportunity to speak to him but all the fuck I could say was...

"i love you."

I been kicking myself ever since. I didn't mention how the interview he posted of him in the UK had been on my ipod for months and I basically had everything he said in it memorized. I didn't mention how incredible and artist I think he is and how I hype him to everyone I've ever known, all I said was "i love you"...wtf?

But dude is incredible, put on a hell of a show in B'more last wknd too, that marked my 11th time seeing them in concert!

clearly remember this jawn cause they were giving out condoms at the door.. very cool.

Had one hand on a plate of wings, and hook my hand with the other

I said "I aint trying to disturb ya, but just had to say thanks." he laughed and said it was cool.

we talked about the weather (it was super icy and south street was EMPTY--easiest parking I ever did out there) then shot the breeze (I don't remember, the music was so loud), I asked him to take a listen to my CD, and said "I don't wanna get put on, just remember that I handed you this way back when" and laughed.

I dont think he heard me, the music was so danged loud.

he smiled, pounded his free fist on his chest and got back to spinning.

and eating wings.

but thanks.

I've still not had the pleasure, though I've come very close twice, but froze.

Nov 06 - I'm in Amsterdam Thanksgiving week with my best friend. The Roots are set to play two shows. Both shows are sold out. So, we get to Amsterdam and I try the first two days of the trip to get tix, but nothing. I'm having a horrible time because my bff is not up for doing much of anything. She's complaining about all of the walking, her feet, her back, the weather, everything. First night of the roots we get back to hotel room at 6 pm and she changes into pj's and pulls out a book talking about she's in for the night. I'm like what??? I go to the lobby, call home damn near in tears and my cousin asks--so what's stopping you from having a good time by yourself? She tells me to go to the show anyway and see if anyone's selling tix outside. So I do just that. As I'm waiting on the corner trying to get up the nerve to start asking folks as they walk by for a ticket, I see Quest in the distance coming up the sidewalk. I get so excited and decide I'll tell him that I'm looking forward to the show, but then I think I don't have a ticket so that's kinda stupid. As he gets closer, I was at a total loss for words, so I just looked away and let him walk by. When everyone disappeared inside, a man came up to me and offered me a ticket. That remains one of my fav roots shows!

Jul 08 - Friends and I drive to Milwaukee (from the Chi) for Summerfest. We stayed at the Hilton and the day of the roots show, we step off the elevator and turned the corner and saw Quest coming up the walk way. This time I thought I'd say something for sure, but as he got closer and I saw his face clearly, he looked so exhausted. All I could think was, nothing I'd say is at all worth stopping him from heading to his hotel room. So, we just let him continue on. I texted everyone in my phone and everyone was like--you should have said hello, looking forward to the show--something!

Maybe next time

1st time I was like 16--Radio City show where he had the two shows in a row (I went to the first night with Nas and Common I believe...ghost and rae didn't show up)--met him after the show--quest was pissed outside the venue- cause the show didn't go as planned-just went up and gave him some dap and told him the show was dope..he was cool as shit though even though he was upset.--and kept it moving

then recently at the Roots Rising Down listening party in Philly--said what up--but he was being mobbed--didn't get a chance to talk like I wanted to--chopped it up with riq that night for a minute though--first time meeting.

this site has definitely put me on to some dope music and I have made some good friends on here.
