Get home, pull into the garage, Mamaluv is entertaining guests in the backyard. And they're saucy. I mean-errbody on the patio was tipsy. Her friends are cool, and they ask me to sit down and shoot the shit with them, so I run upstairs to shower, and come back down to grace the foggies with my presence. I promised myself that I wouldn't get as drunk as they were.
Ha...
So one drink turned into five. And I was playing cards. Then it started getting dark. Ma duke's friends were slurring their goodbyes, and it was just me and her playing spades. My mom did the sweetest thing. She looked off into our big backyard, slammed her cards on the table and got up running.
"Ma what the hell?..."
"Girl, it's LIGHTNING BUGS out here, come catch some with me!!!"
I almost teared up. I haven't done that shit since I was six.
"Go run in the house and get a mason jar!!"
She was dead ass serious, and in an instant, I got up and ran in the house. Came out with two jelly jars and we were on the kiddie shit for a good twenty minutes.
Ain't caught naan firefly though.
Betty Jean went in the house to release some of the liquor, but told me to stay out until I caught something.
And I did.....
But in the midst of 'gently' forcing it into the jar. I killed it. All the sudden, the shit wasn't fun anymore. Junebug was glowing low, and slowly dimming when my mom came out and saw me standing in the middle of the yard. Weepy and shit.
"Ma, I killed it"
"Well of course you killed it, Grown Folks! You going about it wrong!!" My neighbor two doors down was out watering his lawn, watching the whole thing. He's been calling me 'Grown Folks' since I was nine, because as a child, I acted way older than my years.
"Catch 'em with your hands and stop being a wuss!! Catch it and let it go, whatchu trying to keep it for?"
And he was right. Sometimes, you have to just enjoy the moment, and not try to hold on so hard.
So, me and Betty Jean spend another 40 minutes running around the yard, laughing, teasing each other, and sweating out that liquor. For that moment, I let go and enjoyed it.
Still ain't catch na'an junebug, but I caught a lesson that I forgot.
Yeah my sig is long, but read it bitches, and have a blest day.
