if you're not up on Baby Loves Hip Hop joint, "The Dino 5", you need to get that. It's produced by Prince Paul, with him Chali 2na, Wordsworth, Ladybug Mecca, and Scratch as the Dino 5. The whole album is a story like "Prince Among Thieves"
I just found out about this other dude, Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. Despite the corny name, he basically makes regular hip hop, beat and flow wise, but with lyrics for the little duns.
The Laurie Berkner band is okay, I like the Yo Gabba Gabba joints. Despite my best efforts, the boys love the Fresh Beat Band.... which is why I gotta push some decent kiddie hip hop hard, lol.

My three year old and I listen to the same music. Of course there are the classics. As far as rap goes- I just buy the clean versions off of amazon, of course the clean versions usually only exist for major label releases though. I cant do that FBB and Kidz Bop stuff. Just cant

Maybe when they're in junior high...
My son LOVES Outkast, cuz he can bob along to their beats, but mannnnn when he starts trying to say "Throw your hands in the aiiyerrrr...." I always cringe. Luckily he can't comprehend the rest of the song yet, but yeah, I feel you on that one.

there's ALL this music that I love, that I think is the greatest music ever.... and you want the to hear it and teach them that THIS is what REAL music is.... but you can't (or shouldn't) cuz 99% of hip hop is not appropriate for kids. Even if it's not bad thematically, like some Phonte or ATCQ, most MC's still cuss.

I make mix tapes for her from www.thisisrealmusic.com. I put all the indie stuff I can find on it. She feels like she's on the cusp on things (musically) and I feel good knowing that it's good stuff. (And FREE, to boot.)
I also researched and found up n'coming artists for her. I also try to make sure she has music from UK soul artists too. She had M.I.A.'s stuff waaaaay before Paper Planes. She knew about Santigold before she made it to the U.S.

all the Odd Seasons albums are on her little ipod and so is Class of 3000. We had the Dino 5, the Rockabye Lullabyes and some other stuff I try to do positive female singers (Amel Larrieux, Ledisi, etc) She LOVES Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys :'( She LOVES Michael Jackson, EWF and Stevie Wonder... those albums are on the ipod too She doesn't like Beyonce or Rhianna, so I feel like my job is done. Sometimes I do play bad language around her, I just tell her she can't repeat those words (bad mom I know)

Anyway...Kaia's musical tastes reflect our own. Her favorite group right now is Radiohead...and she often asks for 15 Step to be put on repeat.
The Rockabye Lullaby joints are dope. Get the boys up on the Bob Marley and the Kanye ones. That's what the lil' ones go to sleep to.
Otherwise...her Ipod is filled up with classic shit. She can identify Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye by voice...of course Michael Jackson gets a BUNCH of play and she's just now kinda realizing that he's passed away.
But none of that modern BS gets much play in the whip.

Same as my parents did with me. Unless it has sexually explicit words in it. BUt regular cursing in context is no problem.
We have to stop coddling our kids like we can screen them from the real world. I Play wu tang and something drug related comes up and I give them a speech about not using drugs, or selling drugs. Something comes on about getting locked up for slanging dope, I explain that they should never break the law or they will end up in prison.
It's music use it as a tool for enlightenment and a bonding tool for your kids.

I ain't playin no damn Wu-Tang around them, lol. It's not about coddling kids, but it is about treating kids like kids and not exposing them to grown up shit, IMHO.
I haven't regularly listened to radio (sans news/traffic or being around others listening to it) since Rap Radio 950AM went off the air almost 20 years ago.

I got a couple of those and my kids listen to that to expose them to hip hop. I'll let them listen to some music on the hip-hop stations, but it depends on the content.
As other folks mentioned, the classics, Baby loves series and Jazz.

I just went through my songs and have made him his own playlist on the ipod. Lots of classic soul, MJ, even some hip hop. He is in the car far to much for me to listen to those other songs.

I hate putting a label on "Christian" hip hop, since it immediately will turn some people off, but its really just good hip hop with a positive message that I know won't be garbage to my kids ears. I do let them listen to some old school hip hop too, and depending on the artist I'll let my older daughter listen to some classic hip hop with cursing.....

from the fact that Brontosaurus is no longer identified as a species to the fact that T. Rex wasn't the biggest meat eater (they might even say he's the biggest dinosaur) and pterosaurs weren't dinosaurs etc. etc.
That said, they love it and I think it's fun too.

I highly recommend They Might Be Giants' 'Here Comes' series: Here Come the ABCs, Here Come the 123s, Here Comes Science. Get the CD/DVD combo. Highlights from each:
The kids also love Dan Zanes, and I do too... he makes the kind of music I like to make, so it stands to reason. Mix of good old roots-rock and various folk forms. His band always has a few cute ladies in it too for the dads. He seems to keep his vids under fairly tight wraps, but... Few of my favorites:
My brother's put together a few mixes for the kids with everything from Slim Gaillard to De La Soul... heavy on tracks from novelty acts plus some silly rockers from the Kinks, the Who, etc. I can share if needs be.
I've burned tracks from a bunch of LPs I had when I was a kid - Pete Seeger, and that kind of stuff. Also have recorded a few tracks for the kids.
