"lets discuss some dope but unheralded albums from 91-95"
Tue Aug-21-07 09:04 PM by melmag

basically great albums from the golden age that slipped
thru the cracks cuz we were all too busy being consumed
by Nas, Tribe, Wu, Biggie, Dre & Snoop, etc...

albums that if you wasnt a "head" would prolly never know about.

this is an appreciation/nostalgia post for them benchwarmers that never got no run.

i post the album and we discuss below

I don`t care what anyone says
when this came out it had me in a headlock
Buckwild and T-Ray production + 2 hip hop heads rhyming= all I need
a lotta heads said they were just run of the mill, cuz they had the chick song, the weed song, the back in the day song, the represent song...
I DON`T CARE

Someday, I wanna find out what it feels like to post on a real message board

o.c., the artifacts and diamond d first albums really don't belong in this thread...all are considered classics by most people.

if you really mean unheralded/slept-on albums then this thread should consist of albums from crews/rappers like the boogiemonsters, h2o, the b.u.m.s., king tee, da king & i, trends of culture, kurious, dred scott, saafir, double xx posse, chi ali, illegal, questionmark asylum, scientifik, etc...

but i guess your definition of slept-on differs from mine...

that's one of the reasons why The Doc champions '90s hip hop above all...the dearth of styles in the overground, underground, indie scene, only-put-out-one-single scene was staggering.

Saafir even had videos on TV, The Doc knows Viacom isn't even trying to hear that now.

That album was killer, but most of the planet wasn't on the album like that....

And you know what I hated?

Everyone thought the chorus went:
"They want efx
Some DAS Efx"....

When it was really:
"They want efx
Some LIVE Efx!!"

No one paid the second and third albums any attention: Snoop and Biggie were the only rappers that existed by then (Pac wouldn't take over like that until going to jail as far as I remember).

They were great. Definately a diff. from Too Much Trouble, who had GREAT production, but were too harsh to actually enjoy

Are we talking about unknown groups or classics amongst heads (not the masses)?

Because the masses/commercial cats didn't think Enta Da Stage, Dah Shining, Mass Appeal, Livin' Proof, Return of the Boom Bap, 93 Til Infinity, The Most Beautifullest...were classics.

I can't believe somebody mentioned da king & I. I used to love that tape.

When I found her tape, I was like NOWAY!!!! It was even better than I thought it would be.

I always wondered why Isis got promoted/played out the wahzoo, and Queen Mother was almost figment-of-my-imagination status.

Both were ahead of their time.

Yeah, Wild Cowboys was '96, but East/West was 4-alarm at that point.

such a cool album from another group of not-so-gangster west coast heads during the mid-90's. they were harder than pharcyde, yet weren't holding heat; they conveyed the trials of a hard life, but didn't glorify it.

jazzy beats & dope rhymes = good to me. vinyl reanimators made a sick remix of one of their joints off that album, too.

it wasn't that sound at all. the vibe was west coastish, meaning it was a very laidback album, but production-wise, it was very well-produced.

I remember Premier wearing a Sittin on Chrome t-shirt on the Blahzay Blahzay video.

...depending on where you're from and what you were listening to during the period this album was released, it might not fit this category. but i rarely hear or see anyone talk about it so i think it fits in this discussion!

"Rock music is deplorable. It is tribal. And it is from America. It follows ragtime, blues, jazz, hot cha-cha and the boogie-woogie, which surely originated in the jungle. We sometimes wonder whether this is the negro's revenge." Sept. 1956, The Daily Mai

This was such a slept on album, he reminded me of a not so young Nas plus he had the best production from Buckwild, E.Z.L. Pee, L.E.S., & Hi-Tek.

It was not one bad song on the album infact he had one joint "Rotten Apple" that didn't make the album (cause of sample clearance) that was dope too.

I don't care if a lot of you clown these three kats, but Chip Fu was and still is a ill ass emcee & basically held down the entire group.

I loved this album & played it just as much as I did Trendz Of Culture's album.

The problem with this album is the album title was very misleading but if you listened to it understood the concept he was aiming for, plus the album was too short, other than that nothing was wrong with it.

This happens to be my personal all time favorite rap album, I use to listen to this album religiously (weekly) for almost six or seven years straight, I still play it once a month, when it comes to wordplay & topics Akinyele was on top of his game at that time.

Plus Large Professor had the illest beats & Rob Swift had the dopest scratches, to me this was a classic album.

I always thought this was their best offering but 3yrs, 5 months and 2 days had more radio friendly singles.

Never was fully appreciated as a group but made good music nontheless.

Too bad the only song I remembered from it was "Put 'Cha Lips", especially the last verse spat by some girl to this day I haven't found out the name of.
