I did get a strange "3 Feet" vibe from this album personally. I really can't explain what I mean though. I think it's just that on this album, Pos and Dave sounded like they did in 1989. Unlike other albums, they weren't trying to prove anything. They just had fun.

How out of place does "pawn star" sound though. It's almost like you're not supposed to take it at face value, almost like it's a mockery, but it isn't. This whole album just gives off a vibe though. Very interesting...

Bionix is definitely the strongest of the AOI series. Nowhere near the same level as De La Soul is Dead or 3 Feet High, but that's not their style anymore although it does have hints of some old-school, just having fun kind of styles. De La has always entertained my ears and brain, and have yet to disapoint. 'Trying People' makes my De La top 5 song list without a doubt.. Anyone know what we can expect for the 3rd installment? For the DJ's? Can we expect to see a cameo from Prince Paul maybe? (hoping).

First, great album but wouldn't you consider "Pawn Star" just another piece of De La satire and the ever-lasting tweaking/criticism of the rap industry. It seems they're trying to exploit the fact a lot of commercial/current hip-hop is just laden w/ sexual references simply to entice sales instead of artistic growrh. The reason for the track is just to show they can do it with ease if they had to, but look, at the countless other styles they flip too. That's just my take. I think it becomes too much of a stretch afetr a while but I really don't think it should be taken at face value. Peace!

Ummm...yeah...i couldn't tell if you were being funny or not but just in case i you are serious I wanted to say i think they mean Pawn as in the chess piece. A pawn is the weakest piece in chess and it is used as an expendable piece since you have eight of them. They are often used as sacrificial pieces in a larger stratagy. So the term pawn has come to be synonomous with someone or something that is used up and exploited since it is easily replaced. And i believe they intended for the term to sound like porn to since sex and self exploitation are selling a lot these days.

"Observe the ugly mess which most men make of their sex lives-and observe the mess of contradictions which they hold as their moral philosophy. One proceeds from the other. Love is our response to our highest values-and can be nothing else. Let a man corrupt his values and his view of existence, let him profess that love is not self-enjoyment, but self denial, that virtue consists, not of pride, but of pity or pain or weakness or sacrifice, that the noblest love is born, not of admiration, but of charity, not in response to values, but in response to flaws-and he will have cut himself in two. His body will not obey him, it will not respond, it will make him impotent toward the woman he professes to love and draw him to the lowest type of whore he can find. His body will always follow the ultimate logic of his deepest convictions; if he believes that flaws are values, he has damned existence as evil and only the evil will attact him. He has damned himself and he will feel that depravity is all he is worth enjoying. He has equated virtue with pain and he will feel that his body has vicious desires of its own which his mind cannot conquer, that sex is sin, that true love is a pure emotion of spirit. And then he will wonder why lover brings him nothing but boredom, and sex-nothing but shame." -taken from 'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand

I guess I'm one of those people. I've been anxiously anticipating this album, & yes I'm diappointed. There are a few dope track (pointed out above) but the album as a whole leaves alot 2 b desired. I don't agree that Bionix is better than Mosaic. & The reverned skits added no value. It's still an above average album, but Dela's worst 2 date.

i think bionix is hot, but i can understand why people aren't feeling it, especially compared to mosaic thump. MT had lots of guest shots, alot of different sounds, and not nearly as much r&b vocals as bionix. it's more/less a 'traditional' hip hop album.

alternately, bionix brings smoother & soulful de la sounds. most of the guest shots are pretty inconspicuous, and really meld with style of the album. between the tracks and singing, the whole album has a vibe that de la has hinted at before, (on the first track of MT) but never really expanded on.

it's also really clear through this disc that they are adults. hip hop is just becoming old enough where ill ADULT emcees who have been rhyming for most of their lives can produce music from their changing perspective. sure, de la could make another mosaic thump, but isn't better for artists to evolve than to make the same album again and again? ability to change sounds and make new music is what gives artists stamina.

Including the skits and I am not big on skits. I guess they remind me of the reverend in "Coming to America". Anyway, Trying, Held Down and others have been in my head for days. I like Mosaic Thump but Bionix was deeper, had more meaning for me.

Whilst I will admit that Bionix aint classic, it is a step forward, its progressing, its a change, its different, its whats De La Soul has always been, changing and making slow heads (like yourself) relaise in 2 years after the realese just how good they are..........

You didn't like De La Soul Is Dead when it first came out either did you?

Don' believe him, AOI: Bionix is nice. Of course, it is not the classic we always hope for, but really, rarely anything is, that is why they are classic. Anyways, there are many good songs, but does anyone else think that Philly Black sounds waaaaaaay too much like Fabulous (yeah i spelled it wrong, but just cause he's dumb doesn't mean i have to be). Oh yeah, I don't care about hearing how Pawn Star is satire, i still think it is the weakest song on there.

ive always liked de la for a whole host of reasons. too many to list them all. i loved de la is dead when it first dropped too and buhloone mindstate was on some next shit yes.

i tried and tried to like aoi when it first dropped. and when i purchsed bionix my expectations were a little to high. but i see no reason to continue to delude myself and applaud a product that is sub par.

if you look at this album objectively not taking into account any of de la's past endevours, think about it. the first time i gave it a listen i felt robbed. most of the beats and lyrics sound lethargic and lackluster.

there are a few tracks on bionix that are okay. i can listen to them. but overall the production is sloppy and it just doesn't make my ears happy to listen too.

which is a shame bec i know that de la are some of the hardest working individuals in hip hop.

but look at the cd sleeve. when i looked at this i was kind of stunned. that isn't de la its too glossy. did tommy boy put them up to that..

and don't gimme that growth as an artist bullshit. thats just an excuse/cope out for those artists that have lost their touch i.e. tribe/q.tip

bottom line. its mos def the twilight of de la. is the next album the last? i hope not. i'd like to see them continue and hopefully recapture some of the artistic/musical genius that kept them at the pinnacle of hip hop for a long time. but i think ultimately they going to have go back to what got them were they where in first place.

bionix is good, definitely a good album to chill / vibe / work to

but i popped in mosaic thump and it bumps more to me. i think its the collabos that i really enjoyed ... 'my writes', 'squat', 'ooh', 'set the mood' really had a distinct sound to them. the collabos on bionix are good (especially baby phat and peer pressure) but i think they lack the energy of the previous ones

i think i have to listen to bionix a little more though ... 'trying people', 'baby phat', and 'simply' (both parts) are off the fucking hook

Slick Rick's intro to What We Do For Love is hilarious, and the ensuing song is one of my favorites on the album.

Anyone who ignores Dave needs to listen to this album and recognize the talent. "Live for the underground, die for the underground but aint makin no moneyyyyyy. Stupid." and my personal favorite line "In order to live life you must earn one."

I'll admit it, it took me a couple listens to appreciate "Trying People". way too much hype led up to it. I mean, it is a great song, but the way people talked about it here, saying there were "twists" in it and stuff. i didnt see em, but definitely a top ten De La song.

- favorite cuts: Watch Out, Simply/Simply Havin, Trying People

- Simply/Simply Havin makes me feel like Roller Skating Jam Called Saturday. This is a nice feeling.

- 3 ft high and rising changed my life, and while I don't expect that every time out, these cats almost sound like a different group with each release. They even flip their rhyme patterns from song to song. To say the least, their career is one to envy. Just wait 15 years from now when folks finally digest their legacy.

- lyrically, they almost seem to be improving. Hard to comprehend if you think about the high standards they've already set. Bionix is jam-packed with quotables. Thinking man's music that still bumps, that's what AOI is about.

- beatwise, I crave more depth but I'm not mad at Bionix. It's standard fare but I like it more with each listen.

- big ups to the Kev Brown reppin' D.C. ("Special")

- At first I thought Pawn Star was satire, but as weird as De La can be, I almost immediately "get" their satire, even when some of their lyrical references have taken years to spark a light bulb over my head. Still scratching my dome on this one.

- I can do without Philly Black and the cut he's on.

- Rev. Do Good is funny but Ghost Weed is still funnier. (Check my ad-lib... )

- It's American reminds me of that movie 'Scanners'. Exploding skulls disturb me. Straight gully.

This shit's classic to me, or damn near.

I was feelin' it alright when I first got it, but after a weekend in the lab....I can't find any holes in it, period.

Transitions are great, production is superb, and the guest appearances were just plain' swell, UNLIKE Mosaic Thump...but I digress.

If you don't feel it that's cool, but all I'm sayin' is, for mine there is not one bad song, or skipper on the cd. Now you might skip over it just cause you wanna hear a specific song...but...hey...what ya gwan do..eh?
