While Belly had a dogshit script (Thanx Nas!) The filmmaking was some of the most interesting seen that year and I'm not talking compared to "the Wood". There is only so much you can do with a 3 minute format meant more as advertisement than art and he's still managed to push that pretty far. I give him his props even tho his videos and the garbage songs they are associated with have polluted my TV for some time now. I think Hype likes to go big (ie: work with "big" artists) and his artistic integrity gets lost in the midst of their gassed up visions of themselves.

Supposedly Hype had the basics of the story down but is more a visual thinker and less interested in concept. Nas came in and made a lot of suggestions (basically wrote his whole character, including that completely unbelievable "back to Africa" shit). I think he was also responsible for the twist in the DMX character. At the time they thought the changes brought some "soul" to the film but didn't realize they just made it worse. Can you imagine DMX sitting around studying the Quaran?
