Thanks for this post, for the education on James Brown I'll have to go and research now that you made me recognize a few things I was unaware of:

2. Best NON "IT TAKES TWO" use of "Think"- "My Part Of Town" Tuff Crew
11. Best JB Album Cover-For Goodness Sakes Take A Look At Those Cakes
16. Best JB Label: Orange King Record logo
17. Irony In The Fire : James samples himself in last visit to the top 10 in 1988 with "Static"

Here's some of my additional favorites to go along with my agreement in your answers given:

>1. Best Use Of "Funky Drummer"-"Rebel Without A Pause" Public
>Enemy

Yeah, I defintely think that's the best. Next in line for me is Marley's layering of it with Sly Stone's "Simple Song" drums on "Mama Said Knock You Out".

>3. Best Use Of "Funky President (People Its Bad)"- "Fresh
>Prince Of Bel Air Theme" the "DAH!!!!" at the tag was a great
>ad lib inclusion.

Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's "Anger In The Nation" is another good one for Funky President creative usage, I can't think of many other that come above it.

>9. Best Use of his Vocals-"I Don't Know" by Slum Village

Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's "Anger In The Nation" is another I thought of. I thought that was a pretty creative one with how Pete used the vocals & horns in the chorus scratches.

>18. Tell the truth...Eddie Murphy started your interest in JB:
>No (and i will ask the same if stevie goes before me)

No. I didn't hear the "Eddie Murphy: Comedian" album 'til later. My interest came with hearing "It Takes Two" in the streets of NY as a 6 or 7 year old, then listening to Kane's 1st album. Maybe if I were older I'd have listened to Eddie first and discovered from him.

i never made it clear at the top of this post

this post is a questionare. not just a random jb discussion post.

you dont have to answer em all....if you don't know leave it blank.

i just wanna have an organized defined post about his influence on hip culture--being as though the other james and hip hop died this year too....

so again....please dont be offended.

i just want a clear post and a clear subject.

all side comments and discussions can go to the other 100 jb posts im sure that will materialize in minutes.

thanks!

The Orange King is nice, the white label promos for those are nice too, but I like the white label Polydor's from 1971-1973. Purple People was always cool too

>17. Irony In The Fire<

>18. Tell the truth...Eddie Murphy started your interest in JB:
>Yes or No
EDIT: After replying elsewhere in this thread, I realized that perhaps it was Eddie Murphy who sparked my interest. When I read this poll, I was thinking more about the Hot tub skit on SNL, but it was definitely the "Delirious" special from HBO. I knew of only a few songs by him, but knew who he was. It was funny, but the way he expressed his respect for JB made me wonder: there's got to be more to this guy than the hair and the screams. As rap music began to sample him, it became a chore to find his music, but the exploration for it was part of the appeal. It was more than just finding the samples, it was possible to get into his music first hand, or at least in its true state without digital manipulation.

>19. The Best James On TV to school a youngin
Soul Train performances are nice, because he not only performed live, he played three to four songs in four minutes. It was a live party, no need to be exactly like the record. The dancers, while startled, always went back on track.

The famous performance of him doing "Night Train". This TAMI Show footage was used for a film, and when shown on the big screens in London, fans went nuts.

I hope that with his passing, there will be some nice DVD releases of his many television appearances, and film footage that has never been properly released, especially the period between 1967-1973. While not his *prime* stuff, there's some footage of him from 1979-1981 that is fairly good. Those are easy to get. If you must, find the bootleg DVD's that are out there.

>20. The Funkiest Moment captured on wax<
I always liked "I Can't Stand It (When You Touch Me)" because of the fact that the band he was playing it, The Dapps, was not his regulars. It was a bunch of white guys who were fortunate enough to hook up with him for a session. That's not to say that white guys couldn't play or get funky, because loads of bar bands had respect for the band, and in terms of doing covers, that was one way to prove themselves, whether you were The Fabulous Echoes, Garry Mac & The Mac Truque, The Association, or The Magnificent Men. In a very quiet way they were the rebels, because if you were white, you played Elvis, Gene Vincent, Duane Eddy. Some of the same guys who could play some pretty mean country could walk across town and play some respectable soul. It's not unlike being 16 or 17 and discovering hip-hop, these were young white kids who could care less about the racial barriers their parents believed in, they wanted soul and jazz, they looked for it. It wasn't just the British kids getting into it, but because of the times, a lot of those bands weren't massively played.

Therefore, I give respect to The Dapps because I wanted to single a moment that may have been considered "odd" considering how JB is known for his different bands, and how people will throw blows over who were the better set of musicians. When I hear "I Can't Stand It" I anticipate that moment when James Brown tells the band to "lay out for the drummer". Then Tim Drummond just goes in deep and you're like "holy shit!". Nothing against Clyde or Jabo at all, you can't deny what they did, but that moment when Tim gets his shine always amazes me, not because of what he is, but because of how great and funky it sounds. Perhaps he and the rest of The Dapps played it as if they would never have a chance to play with the man again.

They did, however, get a contract with King Records.

In response to Reply # 21

I knew of James Brown through a few of his disco songs, but as a kid his records weren't on the radio. I did not have an opportunity to hear them first hand, much of my JB upbringing came through hip-hop.

It got to a point where almost everyone was sampling him, an as someone who was curious about those sounds being used, there had to be a way to find those songs. Right? Not really. Most of James Brown's records were out of print, and what was in print was a few greatest hits packages, some of which didn't look or sound good. When much of his big hits were out of print, Rhino Records went out of their way to license his music and release two greatest hits albums. This was when Rhino was still run by record collectors, and years away from when they would be bought by Warner Bros.

Years later, Polydor Records would release a double LP of hit hits, but the US would not have released it if it wasn't for the fact that the album was a UK-release, due to the reawakening of his music which happened to coincide with the growing use of JB samples.

In many ways, it felt like some secret club. How come everyone was sampling James Brown but you couldn't find any of his fricken records? That made his music (and the hunt) more appealing. The comps were first. Around that time, it was Stetsasonic who said "tell the truth, James Brown was old/Til Eric & Ra came out with I Got Soul/rap brings back old R&B, and if we would not, people could've forgot". When James Brown came out with "Living In America", there was an awareness (for me) of what he did before. "Living In America" sucked, and yeah he was the old man with the hair. Once the comps came out, it made exploring his music much easier. Finding the original albums and 45's were harder, but if it had to be done, you did the search.

Polydor Records released a CD comp called THE CD OF JB, and it was the first time his music was making it onto the digital format. When I heard those songs, it was what I wanted to hear, not "Living In America". THE CD OF JB II came out, and there had to be more. It would be years before anything else came out, but finally they did.

One day I went to my auntie's house and in a room was her boyfriends record collection. What I found was REVOLUTION OF THE MIND. I asked if I could borrow it, and I fell in love with that album. I remember playing it, finally flipping it to Side 4, hearing the music start again and thinking "OH SHIT, THAT'S PUBLIC ENEMY!!!"

It was a great time, because there were no resources like there are today to find these songs, 45's, and albums. You truly had to seek the music out. It began with all of the comps Polydor were doing in the late 80's, and again, that reissue program would not have existed if it wasn't for fans in the UK wanting the music out. The comps became a much easier way to find the records for samples, but a lot of times the quality of the mix on those reissues weren't always good. Thus, the hunt for the originals would begin.

Then again, maybe it was Eddie Murphy in "Delirious". That was definitely the centerpoint of that show. Even at that point, James Brown was not in his glory years yet Murphy showed respect by reflecting back to his childhood and being fascinated with his records, not knowing a damn thing he was saying, but knowing what the band might do when he said "HEEEEEEEEEEEYYYY!!!"

oh yeah, let's not focus on J.B.'s bad albums...that's in poor taste right now.

The thing that compelled James to cover "W.T.W.N.N." IS one of my favorite things about J.B.

BUT

I think his indulgence into just stupid sick grooves are my favorite thing about him (see the SEX MACHINE TODAY DISCO SOUL DANCE DANCE DANCE album, along with the raps/ad libs)

yeah...them one finger organ solos are ill/hilarious (illarious?).

but again, I think the genius of the philosophy of J.B. is the sheer LACK of fear to do or say anything.

did it propel him into insane situations?

Yes: co-signing Nixon, taking shots at Bowie/Lennon, Average White Band, Disco, Soul Train, being a "STAY IN SCHOOL" advocate the same time he was a raging PCP addict...

but at the same time dude made some of the most exciting music EVER up until like '76

James Brown was a very complex individual up until the end.

I LOVE THAT.

You can preview the original here

the remix that LTJ Bukem cained was better.

>1. Best Use Of "Funky Drummer"

'Boomin System', LL Cool J

>2. Best NON "IT TAKES TWO" use of "Think"

'Love Will Never Do (Without You)' (CJ Mackintosh Remix), Janet Jackson (uses "She's a bad sista")

>3. Best Use Of "Funky President (People Its Bad)

'Fight The Power', Public Enemy

>4. Best James Offspring Production Use In Hip Hop

The JB's 'The Grunt' in Public Enemy's 'Rebel Without A Pause'

>5. Best St Clair Squeal PE

See: #4

>6. Best Non PE St. Clair Squeal-

not sure but i bet it's on Amerikkka's Most Wanted. LOL (shoulda been Non-Bomb Squad, not Non-PE)

>7. Best James in RnB

'The Payback' on En Vogue's 'Hold On.'

>8. Best James in Pop

'Funky Drummer' on Madonna's 'Justify My Love' (via PE/Bomb Squad, of course)

>9. Best Use of his Vocals

'Make It Funky' on De La Soul's 'Bitties In The BK Lounge'
(How come just b/c we speak peace ppl think we can't throw no joints?/I DON'T KNOW)

**there's some song i've heard that uses the 'I DON'T KNOW' repeatedly and i can't think of what it is but if i could i'd list that as my 1st choice.

>10.Best "holy shit THAT was JAMES BROWN?"

dunno.

>11. Best JB Album Cover

It's A Mother
tied w/:
Hot Pants (back cover)

>12. Best Haterade James

'Get Up Offa That Thang'
(Barry who?)

>13. No JAMES NOOOOOOO!!!!!:

oh lord. uhh...'Future Shock (Dance Your Pants Off)'. though it's sorta cool the way he changed "Dance your ass off" to "Dance your pants off" just by titling it such the repeated "DISCO!!" overdubs were a bit much. it didn't need all that.

i tried to stay away from thinking of 80s James (i admit i like 'Living In America') and i wanted to say "The use of the white girls in the stage act" but that just seemed too easy.

>14. Best JB just hanging with the boy's banter on wax:

- 'Mind Power'
- the intro to 'Damn Right I'm Somebody' (Well, salakum salaam)
- 'Make It Funky' (parts 3 & 4)

>15. Best JB Drummer

Clyde, man. Clyde all the way.

>16. Best JB Label

People can't be touched. the logo, i mean. he did his best work on Polydor (IMO) but i give it up for People.

>17. Irony In The Fire

i actually bought that JBs reunion album. i figured if Fred & whoever else James was working with are supposed to have been responsible for the magic that is James Brown's music i figured when the best of those folks got together the shit should be outta sight (pun), right? WRONG (© Charlie Murphy). the shit was painful. PAINFUL.

>18. Tell the truth...Eddie Murphy started your interest in JB:
>Yes or No

Hip-Hop did it for me. that's THE best thing Hip-Hop has ever done for me. i didn't fall in love w/Hip-Hop b/c i was too busy falling in love w/the music being sampled. i got into James, Sly, and George primarily b/c of Hip-Hop (and b/c of books that told me those 3 had influenced Prince). i figured i'd just go to the source of what was making the records so hot to me...i wasn't about the MCs hardly ever and i wasn't about the drums either. i wanted the basslines, the guitar scratches and squeals, the horns, the vocal stabs...that was and is my shit. i'll always be grateful to (80s) Hip-Hop for that.

>19. The Best James On TV to school a youngin

James doing 'Nighttrain' on TAMI. i used to watch that clip in amazement on Video Soul.

>20. The Funkiest Moment captured on wax:

tie:
- all of 'Mother Popcorn'
- the live version of 'Sex Machine'
- the breakdown in 'Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose' (Remix) w/James talking/chanting/instructing over drums and congas (Clap ya hands! Yeah! Stomp ya feet! Yeah! Check out ya mind! Yeah! In the jungle, brother. Yeah! In the jungle, brother. Yeah!)
- the bridge on 'Make It Funky'

James, I really wanna thank you, sir, for loving us. So much you loved us, the people of the world, that you mustered the courage to share with us the Great Old African Rhythms that are now wakin' up our minds and giving us happy feet for all eternity. Blessed be your journey, sir. The first great soldier of the funk, we love you.

4. Best James Offspring Production Use In Hip Hop - Technically, isn't "Think" in this category?
5. Best St Clair Squeal PE
6. Best Non PE St. Clair Squeal-
7. Best James in RnB - I really liked Entouch's "II Hype"
8. Best James in Pop - Justify my Love is definitely on the list.

17. Irony In The Fire - See #14
18. Tell the truth...Eddie Murphy started your interest in JB: Yes or No - No. I really was too young to see Delirious and the SNL skits when they were first released. It was the overuse of the Funky Drummer and Impeach the President in the late 80s for me.

1. Best Use Of "Funky Drummer"
I think the consensus has established 'Rebel' and I would agree,
but others have mentioned "Lyrics of Fury" and that is cold ass
beat too.

2. Best NON "IT TAKES TWO" use of "Think"
I can't think of one without rummaging through shit, but people
have mentioned 'Ya Bad Chubbs' and that seems fitting.

3. Best Use Of "Funky President (People Its Bad)
I don't even know this sample without going through my cd's.

4. Best James Offspring Production Use In Hip Hop
Step in the Arena - Gang Starr (I want to say this is either a Fred Wesley song, or a Maceo & the Macks song. I could be wrong altogether though. Right until proven wrong)

5. Best St Clair Squeal
Rebel again.

6. Best Non PE St. Clair Squeal
Warm It Up Kane- Big Daddy Kane (that is JB right?)

7. Best James in RnB
I can't think of one that truly stands out. Anything that interpolates 'Payback' is always good in my book. So En Vogue's
'Hold On' and Total's 'Cant You See' will stand in here for me.

8. Best James in Pop
Get Right- Jennifer Lopez

9. Best Use of his Vocals
Can't think of anything that stands out.

10.Best "holy shit THAT was JAMES BROWN?
See # 9.

11. Best JB Album Cover
In the Jungle Groove kicks ass to me.

12. Best Haterade James
Firing his entire band for bringing up money.

13. No JAMES NOOOOOOO!!!!!
Didn't he get charged sexual harassment braggin' about
his brand new bull testicle?

14. Best JB just hanging with the boy's banter on wax:
Someone mentioned it, but the beginning of 'Damn Right
I'm Somebody' was always funny to me.

15. Best JB Drummer
Clyde Stubblefield

16. Best JB Label
Not up on the labels, but I'll go with Polydor.

17. Irony In The Fire
Got nothing.

18. Tell the truth...Eddie Murphy started your interest in JB:
I would like to say no. But I can't say how Eddie's impersonations
affected the subconcious. But hip-hop sparked the interest in his
music, like it did so many others. My answer is no.

19. The Best James On TV to school a youngin
I wouldn't know.

20. The Funkiest Moment captured on wax:
There's a breakdown on 'Give it Up or Turnit A Loose'
after the congos where he summons in Clyde and Bootsy
that is some of the coldest shit ever put down. Everything
about that 30-60 seconds is mind-blowing.

"Jam" on the "Jam, 1980's" album

funkiest, most ridiculous chorus of all time:

"Jam 'til ya feet get dusty. Jam 'til ya body get musty!!!"

ya gotta love it.

AND "Get up offa that thang", "Body Heat" sheeeeeeeit.

James made some Funky Disco shit, whether he knew it or not.

THERE IT IS!! The first break into the key change. BAH BAH BAH BAH..."COME ON, NOW!! UHHH! HAAAAAAA!!! LAYIN IN THE CUT!!! WIPE YA SWEAT!!! HAVING FUN!!!" (etc.) The funk is just so aggressive at this point. It sounds like he's out for blood!

My other funkiest moment captured on wax is a tune from "The Payback" called "Stone To The Bone". James trades off "OOOH"s with horn shots. James: OOOH. Horns: BAHHH! James: OOOH. Horns: BAHH BAH(OOOOOOOOH!!!)HHH! What I'm trying to type out is that James comes in in the middle of the horns with an "OOOOOOH" that's just so funky it hurts! It HURTS!!

Goddamn, I could have been more articulate with this post, but when you're trying to explain something that simply cannot be codified, it can be tough, and funk, along with swing, are the prime example of things that cannot be codified. Just listen to the records.

RIP James Brown

I can't answer this in terms of what artists have sampled JB, but I'd just like to say that James singing "I Wanna Be Around" on the fantastic "Live At The Appollo, Vol. 2" is some beautiful soul ballad singing. If the man had only sung soul ballads his entire career, we'd still be mourning his loss. I think he's highly underrated as a singer.

RIP James Brown

20. The Funkiest Moment captured on wax: Make It Good to Yourself, specifically the 2:19 interlude portion that's on the 'Make It Funky, 71-75' compilation. The original cut obviously being on the Black Caesar album, they dug up this piece that's much later in the original master and JB and the band are just WORKING it.

>1. Best Use Of "Funky Drummer" - I don't think you get better than Rebel, but...another good jack of Funky Drummer was "Run's House"

>2. Best NON "IT TAKES TWO" use of "Think" - That Tuff Crew album was my shit back in the days because of My Part Of Town. I STILL have my 1988 Sony High Bias 90 Min Casette Tape with Follow The Leader on Side A & Tuff Crew on Side B. But I digress...

>3. Best Use Of "Funky President" (People Its Bad) - Eric B. Is President

>4. Best James Offspring Production Use In Hip Hop - "Who's Gonna Take The Weight" (Gang Starr)/"Paarty" (Maceo And The Macks)

>6. Best Non PE St. Clair Squeal- See #4

>12. Best Haterade James - "I'm Real" - the Full Force produced comeback single.

>13. No JAMES NOOOOOOO!!!!!: LIVING IN AMERICA

>14. Best JB just hanging with the boy's banter on wax: More Peas - "he's like a cheesebox......SQUARE!!!!"

>15. Best JB Drummer - Gotta go with Clyde S.

>17. Irony In The Fire - JB's organ playing LOL!!!

>18. Tell the truth...Eddie Murphy started your interest in JB:
No, but hip hop got me to dig deeper into his genius. You take shit for granted when you hear it around the house as a youngin'.

>19. The Best James On TV to school a youngin: Not the best, but most recent and proof positive that JB was a crooner and was still schoolin' em' all at 70+ years of age...his live set @ The BET Awards. The TAMI show unfortunately is probably too old for the youngins to understand.

AND HERE'S ANOTHER QUESTION TO ADD ON:
Best Post-Golden-Age JB Song - "Static"

>2. Best NON "IT TAKES TWO" use of "Think"- "My Part Of Town"
>Tuff Crew

I nominate 'Alright' by Janet - or does that count as pop?

>3. Best Use Of "Funky President (People Its Bad)"- "Fresh Prince Of Bel Air Theme" the "DAH!!!!" at the tag was a great ad lib inclusion.

I nominate "Shake Your Thang" Saltn Pepa w/ EU

>4. Best James Offspring Production Use In Hip Hop- Bobby Bryd's "Hot Pant's I'm Coming" for Big Daddy Kane's Raw.

I like that one they used for "Treat Me Right" by Chubb Rock (forgot the name - it's on James Brown's Funky People Vol 3)

>7. Best James in RnB- "The Payback" En Vogue's "Hold On"

"Gimme all the chickeheads from Pasadena to Medina...."

>11. Best JB Album Cover-For Goodness Sakes Take A Look At Those Cakes
I like 'In The Jungle Groove' better myself...

>12. Best Haterade James- Him calling out the already peeked Ohio Players on "Get Up Off Of That Thang"

Whut? Way-air? (c) Vinny barbarino. That one went right over my head. 'Splian that one.

I nominate "I Need To Be Loved, Loved, Loved". he basically heard 'Fame' and jacked the beat. It didn't seem reverent of respectful - to me it just sounded like he said, "Yunno, that beat is WAY too fonky to have his whitebread ass slurring and moanin' all over it. I'mma do it myself!"

>13. No JAMES NOOOOOOO!!!!!: endorsing Nixon in 74

Rocky IV, anyone?

>14. Best JB just hanging with the boy's banter on wax: James and Jabo going dish for dish in "Make It Funky"

Naw. My vote goes from the beginning of 'Damn right, I am somebody" when he goes around making everyone say 'Damn right I am somebody." Well, one of the guys (who was evidently Muslim) misses the cue I guess. He didn't call the guy by his name. He says, "What about you, 'Salam-alaikum?". The guy comes back with the proper Muslim response and James just goes, "Well, Salaikum, salam.." Like diude just meesed up the whole cypher. Hillarious...

>17. Irony In The Fire : James samples himself in last visit to
>the top 10 in 1988 with "Static"

Yeah, that was like him publicly masturbating. with the help of Full Force. (no muscle shirt-o)

>20. The Funkiest Moment on Wax-"It's A New Day So Let A ManCome In And Do The Popcorn"

HELL NAWL. 'Doing It To Death" Wins By A landslide...

Yup. Mista Monotone put me up on it. It's the DiFilece Trio or som'n like that.

>
>>12. Best Haterade James- Him calling out the already peeked

It's towards the end, buried under the horn riffs. He just goes "Ohio Players, *James Brown Babble*..."

I ALWAYS wondered why David Bowie didn't sue JB...

That shit is SOOO funny. He fucked it up ROYALLY, lol. and when he dissed dude that said "Ohia". JB goes, "I don't know where Ohia is... I know where Ohi-O is..."
I'm like,: "you country bastard, how can you correct ANYBODY after the way you butchered up the english language on "King Heroin"?

I was put up on it by Disco DJ's archived "funkiest song ever" thread. Later bought it off iTunes, and James does indeed steal a whole bunch of it.

86. "and don't forget jame's influence on afrobeat"
In response to Reply # 0

Fela was the nigerian version of james brown....However, fela was doing more political fighting than james through music, but you can tell by the adlib work and horn section how much fela was influenced by james....when I hear "going to have a funky good time" , I can't help but to relate "black man cry to it".

It's funny though, James influenced the 70's and 8o's ( all genres..and is still influencing), and it appears that Fela influenced the 90's and is influencing the millinieum( everything you hear now is so afrobeat influenced) - shit everybody is doing afrobeat now, even white folks. It reminds me of how all those funky white bands came out in the 60's and 70's after James Brown surfaced.

LIVE on JB!!!

Also, and jame's influence on SKA( jackie mittoe)

"Hold On" AND "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" were built off JB records -- "Synthetic Substitution" and "The Big Payback."
