"Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde >>>>>>>>>> Labcabincalifornia"

WAIT! Before the Dillaphiles attack me, let me make sure that everyone else agrees with me.

Labcabin is a great album, don't get me wrong. Drop, Runnin, Somethin That Means Somethin...so many classics.

But I actually had a conversation with a couple of hip hop heads, and they BOTH said Labcabin is the classic Pharcyde album, NOT Bizarre Ride.

A-WHAAAAAAAAAAAA?

Bizarre Ride is one of the most fun if not THE most fun hip hop album of all time, period. It manages to show incredible lyrical dexterity, and an earnest playfulness that is insanely infectious. But it goes beyond that. The beats are RIDICULOUS. If Soulflower Remix doesn't make you nod your head, then you my friend are paralyzed. Call a doctor immediately, I'm legitimately concerned about your health. This album is FULL of roll-through-your-city-with-the-windows-down JAMS that simply can't be topped. The Dilla beats on Labcabin are all great, but with a couple of exceptions, they're more like roll-through-a-highway-surrounded-by-fields-of-corn-as-the-sun-sets jams. I want those instantly catchy, break your neck, yell the lyrics to the goofy ass chorus jams. There is no other album in hip hop history that achieves the type of energy, humor, and wild temperament that the Pharcyde achieves on Bizarre Ride.

If you guys want the later one, the one that's a bit more laidback, a bit less funny, but also has some classics, that's cool. Seriously. Labcabin's a great album. Do you, friend.

But you're missing part of your brain if you think it's the classic Pharcyde album, the FIRST one that deserves mention in the "What are the essential classic hip hop albums?" conversation. Whether I'm talkin to a hip hop head OR someone who's never listened to the Pharcyde, I'm poppin Bizarre Ride into the CD player first.

I get this funny feeling that the mellower hippier Dillaphile people on the board are gonna say I'm wrong. I don't care what two records Dilla cut together to make a song, or what sample he flipped. It's not a diss to Labcabin, which is another one of my favorites. But it ain't as good as Bizarre Ride. The beats are better, the lyrics are better, the energy is better. Bizarre Ride wins.

the vast majority of OKPs probably agrees with you. Personally I still prefer Labcabincalifornia, but you certainly made a strong case for Bizarre Ride II.

Bottom line is that they are both dope albums.

Labcabincalifornia is dope for Runnin, alone, tho, then all the other tracks make it a formidable matchup for any record.

If anything its softer. Theres a lot of snuggly beats on there. If anything, their first album is darker and grimier.

Just because an album came out first and had a slight impact, dont make it better just cause it had an impact.

So "Yo Bumrush the Show" was better than "It Take a Nation..." just cause it came out first, huh?

Not saying you said that, but alotta kids arguments are based off these dudes bein different than the typical westcoast offering back then.

Del was different...and he came out before the Pharcyde.

Was "I wish my Brother George..." better than "No need for alarm"?

Labcab is cleaner sounding with better beats. Rhymes made more sense and had focus. Overall, it's just a better album.

but Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde is top 10 to me

J-Swift's production was complete mastery of the jazz sample craze (it's too bad he dropped out the scene)

spinning Public Enemy in a relevant and hilarious way that only Pharcyde could - that's what made the album so great

hell, even the skits were better

(On the D.L. might be my favorite song by them)

....and not because of Dilla. I had no idea who the hell a Dilla was when that LP came out. I was still looking for J Swift beats and waiting for his sister's group to come out.

So yeah..I feel you tho.

I still maintain that Lab is better.

Just like I feel SOM's second LP is better than 93 Til.

I totally agree!!!! There are certain songs that just resonate with a person. And, "Ya Mama" was that song for me I just love the whole CD. I like Labcabin, but Bizarre Ride is my ish.

Dont get me wrong, he did make that album great because the songs he produced happen to be my favorites. But that album has been on my all time fav list since before i even knew who dilla really was, only knew him for the tribe shit, for a while i didnt even know he did part of Common's album. It wasnt til i got into Slum Villa that i paid more attention to him.

I said this before, and i'll say it again....

Labcabincalifornia>>>>>=Psydeways=<<<<<Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde

yup, the greatest hits is the better of two because they got the best of both albums on one.

are the same people that say Licensed to Ill was better than Paul's Boutique.

Bizarre Ride was fun (like licensed to Ill) but it doesn't stand the test of time like Paul's Boutique (or LabCabin)

Otha Fish is one of my favorite songs of all time
4 Better or Worse is infinitely fresh
as is Return of The B-Boy (or whatever the last song is)
Sunflower is ALSO on this album

(this is getting rough)

but a lot of their hooks were questionable on Bizarre Ride

LabCabin was more serious, had better hooks and more complete songs

I give a very slight edge to labcabin

For my money, his production performance on that album is an all-world effort.

been hailed as their 'classic' if you will....

I personally prefer 'LabinCalifornia' bc it holds more sentimental value to me....I clearly remember when the album dropped and was obsessed with "Runnin'"....I think I was only 12 when that album dropped, but the lyrics really stuck with me....They had the same effect on me like Nas and Outkast did on me at the time...

Plus "She Says" is my fav song by PHarcyde....And nuthin' fucks w/ Bullshit, Moment in Time, Drop....

hey you, "y", *the hustle.... *sigh* man......

I dont see how people don't hear it.

*shrugs*

I will admit that Bizarre is their "classic" album, but it's not better than labcab...

In the same sense that "3 feet High..." is not better than "De La Soul is Dead".

More impact, yes. Better, no.

We see through all that boo boo like it's ghost shit... (c) Quelle Chris

if it was Labcabincalifornia >>>> Bizarre Ride, then i'd understand, but obviously, popular opinion is that their debut was better. most OKPs would agree, and obviously you could tell by sales and popularity that people back in the day agreed too.

Labcab is a great record, but BRII is a classic hip-hop album...at least to me.

When Labcabin first came out I bought it expecting another Bizarre Ride.
It didn't sound anything like what I thought it would and for that reason I didn't like it at first.
But less then a year later, it was my favorite CD.

I kind of think it's pointless to worry about which is the better album.
They are both classic, and so different from each other that it's hard to compare them.

I like the original Brand New Heavies version of Soulflower that was on the Heavy Rhyme Experience "vol 1" better then the Bizarre Ride verson, by the way.
