"(after 100+ listens to Donuts)"

i am officially not calling dilla "GOD" anymore.
no i aint lose my mind.
i feel this is his best work and again shows his amazing ass range.
how funny on "Mash" he samples the VERY man i am about to compare him to?

Dilla is CLEARLY the Frank Zappa of hip hop.

creativity flowing out his blood like water.
slept on.
created some of this shit in hospital bed (isley flip that com and d took for "they say" remix)--pretty much that should show you his commitment to music.

not to mention i aint even about to get into how the fuck did he manage to make boring ass "fruitman" sound so nice ("the difference")

and that "with a strap...when i was baaaaaaaa-aaaa-aaad"

that mofo is the coldest cat to ever cut and flip some shit.

is when you take a part you want to loop and manually loop it be re recording said loop on beat as if you were a sampler.

before the casio sk-1 cats would just loop their favorite part press pause when the good part stops and re record the loop over again.

I am also a fan of Jay Dee.

I think Dilla has surpassed Pete Rock and Premier.

As I listen to this, I too can appreciate the technique. Perhaps not as well as yourself, but I've still got a decent idea.

But i'm sorry, i'm just not feeling Donuts like that. The beat tapes from last year sound better to me than Donuts. Maybe they'll grow on me eventually, but i'm still knocking hard to the previous year.

Now after this clear, upfront viewpoint of my opinion, watch someone come in here and say that i'm hatin'.....

Jay Dee surpassed Pete a long time ago. I love the wonder's sound too, and can appreciate everything he's done for the game. But Dilla's done all of that and then some. Muster up some courage and face facts. This is on some none Dilla-dickriding shit too.

That's why Pete is better than Dilla. Mecca/Main/Enter The Center/SSI all trump Dilla's whole album work. Besides the first Slum, Dilla has been a slight disapointment on Common's Like Water, Tribes last albums. Dilla's a great producer but he hasn't proved to ME that he can carry a WHOLE album consistently on the production tip like Pete has done. Sorry Pete is a Legend and Dilla ain't surpassed shit. Just because you get some beat tapes and have scattered great production doesn't prove he has surpassed a man who has put out classic albums and COUNTLESS classic remixes for over a decade. No disrepect to Dilla because I enjoy his music but he ain't seeing the Boy Wonder.

and soul survivor 2 was pete's most boring production to date
soul survivor 1 had some good stuff but pete should never rap as long as he lives and the songs on that album were also boring thanks to all the random guest line ups he had
it would have been better as an instrumental album
i fail to see how pete from 98-00 was better than pete 92-94

just like ?uest said, he is the coldest mofo ever to flip and chop samples, but there is more to hip-hop production than that

that is a HUGE element, but you can't front on the shit dre innovated.

him and rza were the first to really see the "big picture" of the song. look at it on a compositional level and try to craft the entire thing.

...RZA and Tip are the best anyhow

You must be young or started listening to hip-hop late. Pete's best work was Mecca & the Soul Brotha and The Main Ingredient. That was pre-1995. All his dope remixes? Pre-1995.

>best sounding drums, best bass, best programming...
>

No. Erick Sermon had better basslines. Pete was not known as a programmer. He was known as master of using the SP-1200 as a sampler and having them jazzy-type sounds. He wasn't a master at programming. He ain't even seeing Timbabalnd with the programming. He ain't even seeing Bink! with the programming.

>but that type of schitt doesnt = hit records..
>it does gain respect with people who know the deal tho

People who know the deal, know Pete fell off and hasn't made some heat in over 10 years. Whereas Preemo keep upgrading and making heat up until The Owners album.

Erick sermon has better basslines that dilla.
Dilla isnt seeing "bink" with drum programming...

you just proved yourself technically illiterate.

by the way, timbalands sequencing sounds quantisized as hell,
so yes, he is seeing timbo.

the average cats arent going to be able to comprehend how genius dilla got on this sh!t..to hear the original songs and how he cut them up so finely..and to reconstruct them so fluidly and so innovative. There's nobody chopping soul like this..not kanye, not primo, not premier or anybody else for that matter in 05.

When i heard the album for the first time a few months back..i was straight geeking out..still am. He's the GOAT.

In response to Reply # 65

the beats arent hard ..or there isnt any "Bangers" by your definiton because its not meant to be technical hiphop beats. Ive heard other folks complaining bout the light drums and whanot..thats for a reason..dilla is sticking w/ light drums to reflect the sound from which he's borrowing from. Its like he's updating the sound of soul but drum wise he's still utilizing the original foundation.

...to his work and realize that he is a good producer, yet not a genius. There is nothing really "ignant" about that. The man is a good producer. But he is not Dr. Dre nor is he a RZA. I mean, has an album that he produced changed the landscape of production in Hip-Hop. I would say no. Has he produced a "Chronic" "Efil4Zaggin", or "Liquid Swords" or "Cuban Linx" or the Bomb Squad's "It takes a Nation...". I don't think so. Its not that far-fetched to think Dilla is NOT a genius. That is not to say he isn't good. That is just to say he is not great or could mentioned in the same breath as the great producers of Hip-Hop.

>...to his work and realize that he is a good producer, yet
>not a genius. There is nothing really "ignant" about that. The
>man is a good producer.

But he is not Dr. Dre nor is he a RZA.

but the sucess of dr. dre and the rza have more or less to do with actual talent and more to do with circumstance, exploitation, marketing, and plain luck. these are things you just cannot separate.

the early work of NWA is pretty much based on the work of Rick Rubin's Beastie Boy period (most hip hop experts can see this a mile away). Straight Outta Compton is banging as fuck. but again you can't ignore that the work of the Bomb Squad didn't give this album the green light. The edge that NWA had over PE was that NWA actually said the shit that chuck d really wanted say but because of his educated millitant stance kept him from really doing so (his well oiled anti cop "black steel in the hour of chaos" really gets washed away in the dust of "fuck the police")

so at the end of the day america embraces the loudmouth rebels. more than rhetoric. so of course the mega than life NWA will wind up on every legend list ever made about hip hop. im just saying don't separate america's minstral fascination, fussing and cussin and marketing scheme from the actual work. and again....dr. dre's whole career to me seems based on someone else's work.

and that is to not say this discounts him and all the glory he gets. someone has to man the ship and dre is smart enough (this is what makes him the hip hop quincy jones knowing WHO to utilize) to execute this.

dre is even responsible for the rza without mofos even realizing it: pretty much the embrace of wu tang was the LAST attempt from the east coast to fight the ongoing popularity of the west uprising.

im basically saying that NONE of their success has ANYTHING TO DO WITH talent.

sure! "G Thing" was a classic. but how you gonna separate the fact that every other line snoop wrote is damn near worthy of being a hook on someone else's album? and separate his suuthern drawl and gangsterism (minstral yall) from Dre's achievements?

and being as though i've worked very close to mike elizondo and scott storch--i could really go on and on and on and on and on and on....

>I mean, has an album that he produced changed the landscape of
>production in Hip-Hop.

changing the landscape? you mean sell 3 million units? naw.

but you can't discount the fact that he has pretty much birthed the new soul movement. Voodoo did change the landscape of black music in 2000 and beyond (shit you can't ignore---) and D will be the first to tell you that every nilc and crannie of that record was inspired by Dilla.

Common best selling album was approximating Dilla.

The Roots best selling album was approximating Dilla.

(the very fact that you are posting on this very website which culturally and financially came to be of said album should also speak volumes.)

I would say no. Has he produced a
>"Chronic" "Efil4Zaggin", or "Liquid Swords" or "Cuban Linx" or
>the Bomb Squad's "It takes a Nation...". I don't think so. Its
>not that far-fetched to think Dilla is NOT a genius. That is
>not to say he isn't good. That is just to say he is not great
>or could mentioned in the same breath as the great producers
>of Hip-Hop.

my closing point (not argument...we just stating our opinions) is that we base too much of our opinions of evidence of things in front of our eyes.

kind of like 50,000,000,000,000,000 elvis fans can't be wrong.

some see elvis as a GOD. a figure not to be fucked with in rock.

others see elvis as an overated privileged white boy who got crowned king by mirroring the culture of people whom in the 50's wern't even considered human beings.

so tell me who is more important? elvis? or bessie smith? elvis cause he sold 50,000,000,000 units? and sold out many a stadium? (meanwhile bessie smith's life couldn't even be saved in alabama cause the hosptial she was rushed to while having a heart attack wouldn't allow her in cause she was a nigger....think that would happen to peggy lee?)

my point in all this is changing the landscape of hip hop based on selling units is an uneven ballfield to be playing on.

im talking about the art of making BEATS.

for every jordan on chicago there are at least 90 dropout weed smoking ballcourt niggas ready to bust his ass.

but jordan is the GOAT right?

i compared dilla to frank zappa because very much like zappa dilla just speaks and creates on a higher level.

beyond ALL this rap shit.

im sorry to hurt yall feelings and shit but i will say it time and time again.

you hear how this man MANGLES the shit outta the jackson five in "time the donuts of the heart"

im not even starting on the speed up and slow down shit...that has been going on since the days of lil louis. im talking about his effortless segues from the intro of that song to how he splices the word "DAY" (all i do is think of you....DAY and night is all i do...) without fucking up the loop. and then seconds later (really fucking with me) he time compresses michael and jermaines adlibs (all that rushed sped up like you on crank) with the uneasy ease of a tightrope walker with oil shoes on crossing one 90 story building to another building after 8 shots of trone.

yes its THAT complex.

look i know (and dont give a fuck) if y'all scarlet L me for this dickriding ass post.

by no means am i even tryna convert yall to the religion of dilla.

im simply a nigga in love with music.

-im a mofo who wants to break the winter music conference dj record of 49 hours.
-i paid $900 for a hank ballard record that i am never going to open and listen to
-i listen to a 2 hour tape of d strugglin and blooperin with the line "So my life may be the reason why babe....oooooohhh ohh uh" (send it on) for kicks.
-despite him making me pay top dollar 10 nights in a row i still follow prince to the end of the earth.
-i spent many an hour listening to 33's on 45 and 45's on 78's and listened to everything in reverse.

the name of the game is range.

and NO name you are going to throw at me is gonna make me change my steeze on this:

none of the names you mentioned nor the names you forgot to mention (imHo) would even THINK to create some shit like this.

nobody yo.

and i heard (and know) just about every beatmaker in history.

and its not taking away from them. shit when dre dies and its 2389? the history books will show Dre as the only figure that mattered in music for the 90s and beyond.

i dont want you to debate me on the above cause this aint even about fighting you on an argument. and its too long yo. this is a praise dilla post.

my question is:

is frank zappa less a genius because he didn't get acclaim of the rewards that were bestowed on stevie wonder and the bee gees? (two 70s figures that changed the "landscape")

i just want you to rethink your stance. genius and landscape changing dont got NADA to do with your ability to market your music.

we listened to that shit til the cows came home.
he wanted some moody/electirc relaxation shit that sounded like slum's use of roy ayers "love from the sun" not to mention the drum pattern is pretty slumish.

same for "spanish joint" being our "straight boss hog" song ("dumb idea there is happiness waiting for meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee")

most artists base their work on whoever they were listening to at the time

case and point

"distortion to static"

for me?-stone age-dela
for riq?-black moon's enta the stage album.

True enuff Snoop was spittin classic shit around that time, but Dre knew how to frame that shit so that it would sound like it could be a hook on anybody elses album...

Look at Snoop's output without Dre...only the shit with The Neptunes even comes close, and even that's way under Doggystyle.

Dilla good, but he aint seein Dre, im sorry, I cant ride with that.

uhhh,

I think Badu and Maxwell/S. Matthewson had a big part of that as well..also, brown sugar had a big part to do with it as well..plus the stuff on TFA...not sure how much Dilla had to do with it though.
I def would credit quest with spearheading that more than Dilla..

Damn... every time I hear about Dilla I trip... Thing is, his music is art, not some synchopated loop he threw together with a Triton. When you hear about how he chops, it makes you wonder how anyone has difficulty considering him the GOAT.

but then they realized that very few people have the talent and vision to do what he does.

i could say the same thing about a 'black on both sides' -- very few MCs out there could do an album like that if they tried.

I'm not trying to dick ride. I'm just saying that most people are looking through soul funk and jazz to find a 'soulful sound', OR they're using their keyboards to put together that killer 5 note hook. dilla is blending together so many samples from weird sources, along with that keyboard shit, very few people can really decipher what he's doing other than to say 'it's hot'.

i think that's why he'll always be a 'producer's producer'. i can hear a rza beat or a dre beat and say 'word, i know exactly where he started looking, and i know exactly what he's doing' -- and I take nothing away from them. i can say the same thing about a kanye or neptunes beat. but i can't figure dilla out. that's the genius.

and i'll give props to ANYONE who can reach this level with their production. (primo has been known to stun me too -- even if I can recognize his formula, i can't figure out how he'd have the vision to recognize a chance to apply his formula to some of the samples he does.)

the ONLY producer I know who puts together a track with minimal drums to the point that it just barely keeps a pulse, and can make your head nod off the strength of the music.

I think it takes a lot of audacity to say "nah, I'm not going to hit em with a huge BAP snare, I'm gonna lower this handclap until it's so quiet it could be confused with a record pop." And he pulls it off.

but at least not for me. i'm no producer and i only got a few crates, but when i hear a track 9th wonder or kanye sampled my usual reaction is "is that it?". all they did was loop it up and added drums. i'm not saying there's something wrong with that, i'm saying it's 2005 we've been there and done that. i know this sounds elitist and whatnot but we're all lessonheads, we all listen to music 24/7. i wanna hear some creativity, and when i hear original tracks dilla sampled i'm impressed with how he freaked it. thats all.

RZA scoring movies and the like. His beats STILL knock. Just check the last 2 Wu LPs, son. Open your ears brotha. Dilla ain't seeing an ounce of their creativity.

Dre is the producer and sole mixer of his albums. He gives credit to those who play live instruments on his records, like Storch and Elizondo as well as Che Pope and Marc Baston. Tek does his own beats, he signed a production deal with Aftermath. He doesn't co-produce with Dre. Dre mixes Hi-tek's beats to make them sound better. But Dre makes beats homie. Storch has said it in many a interview. D.O.C., Ren, Cube, Busta Rhymes, DJ Quik all them n*ggas verify that sh*t homie. These are the n*ggas that work with him. Lessonheads hate on Dre. Dilla has collaborated with James Poyser, ?uestlove, and Kariemm Riggins over the years. But you fail to bring that up. Does that mean Dilla has ghost-producers? No. Nice try, homie. Get the hate out of your heart, and get your facts straight.

Dre does buy beats.

I've heard some of them.

That's about as far as I can go with it.

...for an album, YES he buys. Take Game's album. Dre did some cuts. The rest he bought from other producers like Timbaland, Buckwild, Havoc, etc. And their names are credited on there. Come on people. Give the man credit.

this project again shows dilla can do it all.

"Hi" and "Bye" solitify that he can basically create new ways to chop soul records and add no drums because he's chopping them on the snare as well as the kick(?uest i know you feel me)

"Last Donut Of The Night" is what RZA should have been doing with soul records, but although one of the greatest, just not skilled enough to do it. How many times is DILLA gonna change the sequence in this beat? Damn, he used a different part in the beat thats slightly lower than the first set of chops....this guy makes beats for beatmakers.

"Workinonit" damn......you mean this guy sampled THEM for this song!?!?!? Jesus, I wonder what his thought process is when he's buying records.......on some "OH LET ME FLIP THIS, NOONE ON EARTH IS BUYING THIS WACK ASS RECORD"....lol

"Don't Cry" just shows that NOONE ON THE PLANET, NOW, THEN, OR LATER can chop beats like JAY DEE, NOMOTHERFUCKIN'BODY.

it's cold as fuck in my house and this is all i feel like typing.

A. maybe someone supplies some original sources of Donut material, and we have to see what we can do

B. ?uest supplies something he wants to see if we can flip

C. someone else supplies something

or (probably the most boring of my off-the-top ideas)...

D. we submit a couple examples of stuff we already did, along with the original stuff we pulled from (but that would take the fun out of it)

i donno, what kind of ideas would you have for "the test"?

Are you saying that he should make beats for beatmakers? I don't really have a problem with that, but I guess I'm not his target audience. But can you really compare someone who produces instrumental music to producers who collaborate with artists to create songs w/ lyrics? And by the way, 95% of rappers have sucked since 1979, it's the nature of the game.

why do you feel he's a better beatmaker than primo?
let's take out the producer element for a second, cuz minus the vocals, artists, etc.
let's put them on level ground
mpc3000 vs mpc60& s950
both seem very knowledgeable about records
hip hop fanatics
workaholics
why do you give dilla the edge, when primo seems to have made the better beats, artist notwithstandin' rappin' over said beats?

and some of the beats are a bit too repetitive (i never thought i'd be waiting for a song less than a minute long to be OVER, haha)

but yeah he's doing some crazy shit here. the people saying "he makes beats for beatmakers" are somewhat correct, and at the same time i have to say that it IS an excuse

not too many people are gonna be feeling this record, especially after all the hype its gotten so far. i mean its gonna sound like pure, unorganized NOISE to some people

i'll still buy it when it comes out though. i think its good enough.

And it doesn't stop with Pharrell (and Quest for that matter) either. Dilla is becoming a musician’s musician. Cats may not like him, but when they go the 'he's over rated-route' they're clearly missing something. And when that 'something' is his chopping-skills and/ or his bass lines and/or his ability to use a synth and/or his drum sounds and/or his ability to hardly ever come up with any lukewarm material, well... they simply could still enjoy one of the best timing/(groove)-masters in the game.

Peace,
Merlin.

I still think many of my favorite producerz can make a joint dat I will not like but in da end they uzually have tonz of bangin' beatz to out-weigh da few dat waz a miss rather than a hit.

I still don't like da beatz he gave to Talib, none of dem.

I guess I gotta wait patiently for "Donuts" 'till Feb.

he's definitely a genius, but his genius is overstated.
people saying "you have to know the records he sampled to understand"

no i dont, i have ears and a decent concept of arrangement. this album bangs and overly discussing the technical aspects takes away from the final product.

?uestlove has worked with the man, he's the only one with the right to jock him to the extent that a lot of you do.

people here act like dilla is the only producer with heat. he's the only one doing it to this level of achievement, but come on now.

the catch 22 is it's this high level of commitment that has threatened his health

doesn't matter to me...

picasso is a genius, and i can appreciate
the artistry that went into what he did,
and how HARD it was to make a particular
art piece, but at the end of the day if
it just looks like blobs of color slapped
on a piece of paper, his genius is
irrelevent.

i don't want genius...i want dope art<--- short answer

but see if you understand alladat and appreciate it then it's not going to look like a blob to you. it's going to look like an amazing painting because you know what went into it and how amazing it is.

emotional impact...

so, for example, i can see a flash page
that i know took RIDICULOUS amounts of
time to program, but if the mug is ultimately
pointless and overcomplicated to navigate,
it wasn't an effective piece of work...

or

a mug can do an artpiece to reproduces
a blade of grass down to the tiniest
jot of chlorophyll..but at the end of
the day, its still a blade of grass, and
i don't care much about blades of grass...

whereas, if my little nephew makes a stick

i just want to know if anybody feels the same way I do about donuts.
i listened to this album and while it is his probably his least enjoyable of his projects, from a purely technical point of view this is his most educative. like he was literally just showing you techniques and rough ideas on at least 80% of the tracks.

i can't help but think that other producers could make more enjoyable(for the average fan) tracks using these very same techniques. as a poster already mentioned above, Dilla creates styles that are in concentrate form. They need to be watered down in order for the mainstream to get it.

also this is not really an instrumental album to me its a beat tape.
and while some of these beats might seem weird they are actually well made for rapping or vocals. its hard to hear for novice ears but alot of beats sound weird without vocals. that's just a given.
like the instrumental for "When I Move You Move" by Ludacris. When I first heard the beat, it sounded like noise. But when Luda eventually used it, his rhyme patters accented the beats.

I feel the same way about these beats. The right emcee will make you think they are normal.

I posted earlier that I didn't really like that, but now it's starting to grow on me. But even before that, I could hear the clinic in sound. Technique wise it's pretty amazing, although I still like the earlier beat tapes better.

I didn't view this as an instrumental album either.

After a couple listens through I'm liking Donuts a lot more right off the bat than past Dilla beat tapes. In one of the other Dilla threads, somebody mentioned a Madlib influence and although I can't get technical and specific like some other cats w/ the beat examinating, I do HEAR the influence.

Or put another way, some of these beats (for example, The Diff'rence, Geek Down, Gobstopper) sound like they coulda came from a Madlib beat tape.

And that sound, whatever it may be, is exactly what I go for.

do i agree with the watering down process? no
but is this what happens to most music? yes.
i still don't know how RZA put the Wu On at a time
when New York was starting to get glossy. some of those
beats still sound harsh. then again most of their singles
were melodically catchy or at least had simple hooks.

>

>if they don't get it.

i agree. but i am saying somebody else will come along and water it down a little. the touch of jazz collective from jill's album simply made a more musically dense(and watered down) version of j-dilla's neo-soul sound.

how is that any different than you (meaning the roots) watering down your shit over the last couple of years so that masses can understand it?

just wondering.

everyone waters their shit. so this aint no surprise yo.
but don't look at my shit like every nilc and crannie was

i mean for god sake read the HG liner notes.
i just left a label cause i tried to water my shit so the president
would feel me.

and it didn't work.

so i hope you got your answer.

i aint read what's below me but i see "ONE" jumped on the bandwagon like i just got my pants pulled down or some shit.---

far as i see. for all the compromise i see in the rap world i will say (after 14 years and 9 albums) show me someone who has lasted this long watered down free.

we made a mistep or two (i'll give you "don't say nothing" a first time a hard hip hop song got tagged sellout) but you aint sticking that dunce cap on me like i made a whole career shaking my ass, looking like a clown or doing some mandingo shit for girls to "ooh" at.

your initial comments came off like you were on some black panther “fuck compromise” revolutionary type shit. for a minute there, i thought you were excluding yourself from the problem that you said has destroyed hip-hop.

i wasn’t trying to enlighten you to the fact that you’ve compromised because you’ve openly discussed the struggle between “compromising and surviving” and “not compromising and going broke” on this site many of times. that’s why your comments threw me for a loop.

even so, you are quick to play the “legacy” card in defense when i think you know there is MAD middle ground between the “if they don’t get it…leave it alone” stance and doing some mandingo shit for girls. not to mention, if the roots are now reduced to the same standards and expectations as the rest of the rap world, then that's just another confirmation that hip-hop really has been destroyed.

but i’m not trying to question your legacy brother. your missteps will always be subject to populuar opinion, and i don’t have anything to say that you haven’t heard 1,000 times. watered down or not, i will always support you.

i’m just part of the minority that remembers when your food was just as concentrated as dilla’s and (I) need that.

respect.

balled out for making some of the bravest shit ever in Phren and EC. TFA is my fav, but Phren was a great move from TFA i thought.

so The Tipping Point (and BE) did kind of strike me as yall ducking under your elbows for sticking your ass out. but shit: anyone with half a brain can still sense far more love put into both those albums than most rappers' "opus masterpieces".

that being said, i want to love Donuts, but i don't need it to be watered down...i just need to feel like, after all those amazing chops and drums, he actually put the effort in to, say, make "Airworks" feel SOMEWHAT natural. i hear all the melodic masterminding he's doing there, and i get the sense that the slow-down, speed-back up thing is supposed to make me want to savor those notes...but it just aggrivates me as if i was married to a gorgeous mexican princess who likes to give me handjobs with tobasco sauce.

i'm just asking for a little help with this. Workinonit is AWESOME and Airworks has the potential to be even better. but like i said below, it feels like time itself is kicking the damn thing on the ground, or like Dilla got sick of the beat, threw it against the wall like a haunted clock and recorded the moment of impact.

but not in a cool way...at least yet. for me.

all the elements are there...all the chops are there and ready to be beautiful, but shit just sounds clumsy.

and i'm a huge Dilla fan, but i'm not seeing where these Dunkin clothes are you speak of.

in one way, i understand how the slow-down feeling could be nice, but...it's not. it's aggrivating. all the other little things thrown in throughout the track SHOULD be nice, but...they fall clumsy.

you don't have to water down anything, you can have all the same cuts and chops and samples, and make them JUST. HOLD. HANDS a little.

and btw, Workinonit is the shit.

it's all been said and done.
plus i listened to DONUTS on the way to work in the car today while high. shit is INTENSE.

Dilla's ear for music is incredible. he is definitely larger than hip-hop, which is probly why he's never really truly been accepted as one of the g.o.a.t.'s of the genre. he's just a mad musician, really.

Anyway, a lot of you katz think dat J-Dilla iz gonna put out hiz bezt beatz on a instrumental album instead of sellin' it to a rapper, you all are nutz.

"Donuts" iz kinda like a collection of da new shyt dat he feelz dat people should enjoy for listenin' pleasure dat none of da rapperz he intended da beatz to be uzed for didn't pick in da pazt 6 monthz.

It'z like all thoze crazy azz Y.N.Q. albumz we know damn well half of thoze albumz aren't for da regular muzik buyin' public juz da Madlib fanz but it'z nice when othaz who enjoy & buy muzik for it'z own meritz.

Madlib is.

Dilla is that nigga fa sho. I agree that he is one of the dopest ever, legendary, groundbreaking and all that - but shit, Zappa is some WILD shit...I ain't NEVA seen Dilla get as wild as Madlib with the sound bites, effects, instruments and all that other shit. "The Further Adventures Of Lord Quas" is evidence alone...

When Dilla makes a "Music For Electric Violin & Low Budget Orchestra" type of joint, say that shit then.

speed up, thus totally saying fuck-you to any sort of pocket (that could clearly be formed if only a few bits and pieces were cut at ever-so-slightly better points)?

i mean Dilla is one of my biggest heroes in producing usually. i'm always making people Dilla mixes and stuff...and i love the samples in this Donuts thing, and i love what i see he's attempting with the chops...but the shit sounds extremely clumsy. and i don't mean loose, i mean clumsy sounding. falling all over the place. i can hear the placement and how every chop thrown in SHOULD be sounding right in place (all the little syncopated single-note samples thrown in at just the right point for a sick phrase). i hear it. but half the time its too far out of the pocket to be loose.

quest? anybody? what am i not getting with Donuts?

In response to Reply # 243

you've heard tons of dilla. you ALREADY that he knows how to properly place his chops to sound more on beat. and the speeding up and slowing down is definitely intentional.

as to WHY he would do it? sometimes artist just do things for the sake of doing it. Do I think everything on Donuts works? No. But there's some really good ideas in there. Would it better if you saw it as a scrap book? Like when I am designing I have tons of designs that I don't end up using but i keep them so that I can go back and re-use a particular technique.

In response to Reply # 245

1. a scrap book shouldn't be an official release unless the pieces already work

2. why not get it to work the first time around?

2b. which makes me think it IS intentional (because a lot of these are already so far into it, it wouldn't take any effort to just simply get the sounds to hold hands now)

3. so then it is INTENTIONALLY made to give me the feeling that i'm listening to a dope beat fall apart like darryl strawberry's furniture.

3b. which makes me ask: why?

does he filter the basslines and guitars and keys and etc and relayer them back on top of each other?

or does he just chop the song as one piece?

NO.

NO.

NO.

Dilla is NOT hip-hop's Frank Zappa, for one reason:

Humor.

Dilla does not have that sense of humor or biting satire that Zappa had in his work.

Prince Paul and Madlib are hip-hop's Zappas.

De La Soul is Dead and The Further Adventures of Lord Quas is the closest hip-hop has come to having a Zappa album, morseo the latter than the former. The former was the blueprint. The latter is...well...Madlib does drugs, Prince Paul doesn't...neither did Zappa for that matter.

Dilla is undoubtedly a genius. 90% of the beatmakers out today are Jay Dee knock-offs. That's word!!! Judge him not solely by his solo-joint...or Slum Village Fantastic Vol. 2 (BRILLIANT!). When you question the man, do so in the light of him solely being responsible for breathing a second wind into ATCQ throughout the second half of the nineties. Word up!

This ain't got nothin' to do with jockin'. Shoot! My husband is a genius, too. True indeed! But all priase due to the man called Jay Dilla reppin' the "D".

I understand why folks feel how they feel, on both sides of it.
However, when I heard how he was chopping the beats and leaving the drums in, precisely making new patterns and then with others chopping and then placing drums over them, creating new patterns and changing the sound of the record, I listened........
and found out I was doing the same thing.
I make intros and change-ups using this method, and have been doing it for a while.
I can't find anyone to rhyme over them because they can't ride them easily, no matter how smooth I get the chops to sound.
You may not be able to tell from lsitening to Donuts, because the labor isn't heard immediately unless you know about records, but it isn't an easy thing to do, and you have to respect him for it.

The once and future Master

LOL!

This tape was trash. Sounded unprofessional and messy as hell. A rush job in the truest sense.

Dilla needs to be making more "Verbal Clap"'s, "Do You"'s & "It's Your World"'s and less of this shit, which sounds like it was made in less than 2 hours.

I'm sure somewhere in this mess there is SOME sort of heat, but...goddamn. PREVIEW before you buy, ya'll.

vvvv disgusting

he's definitely a genius, but his genius is overstated.
people saying "you have to know the records he sampled to understand"

no i dont, i have ears and a decent concept of arrangement. this album bangs and overly discussing the technical aspects takes away from the final product.

?uestlove has worked with the man, he's the only one with the right to jock him to the extent that a lot of you do.

people here act like dilla is the only producer with heat. he's the only one doing it to this level of achievement, but come on now.

the catch 22 is it's this high level of commitment that has threatened his health
