"What was your favorite blank cassette?"

Someone brought this up at Soul Strut and I wanted to bring it here. Unfortunately we can't post any images here but I'll post mine. As I was doing a search, I found this website where someone has an image folder of nothing but blank tapes:
http://c-90.nm.ru/cassettes/

Mine were the Maxell XL II, Maxell XL II-S, TDK SA, Sony (any chrome), and the TEAC Cobalt:

i just bought a pack a couple days ago. you'd HOPE that the price would be going down. NOPE. $9 for a pack of 5 90 minutes.

"Nah (and trust me, I've yet to be high-end)"

TEAC was fairly common, and I believe its original intention was for the early home 4-track recorders of the early 80's, but then they sold them for regular home use. They also had green and black reels.

What I was surprised about were the open cassettes, which I had never heard of:

I remember thinking "when can I break some glass?" The infamous Ella Fitzgerald commercial where she sings and then breaks the glass, but it was really a cassette. That was the only reason why Memorex was cool.

Of course, the infamous Maxell commercial where the guy is sitting in his chair listening to classical music, while his wine class is moving.

I don't use tapes anymore, but wouldn't hesitate to do so.

I had to wait 15 years before I could get my first 4-track. I had a nice Sony tape deck but foolishly gave it to Goodwill when I didn't think I would need it anymore (that's when I had created all of my music on a computer).

But to be honest, I don't miss it. I do plan on getting a new deck, as a lot of people want me to do cassette > CD transfers. I did one last year and they loved it.

although I was an idiot and NEVER marked my 4-track tapes so I'll always pop in a tape that I know was from a certain era of my listening and it's sound like some ultra-screwed and chopped sizzurp induced mess...man, what happened magnetic tape industry? I think analog could've still improved...but I guess it just doesn't fit into the world today

In response to Reply # 10

Except that when we made tapes, we had to look at the label on a record or another cassette and see how long each song was. But you had to think in minutes, not regular 50+50=100. It would be 50 + 50 = 1 minute and 40 seconds. So when it came time to compile the perfect mix tape, it had to be precise. If you were lucky, each side would have only a few seconds of silence on each end. When when auto reverse came, it would only be a temporary wait inbetween songs.

When I say "the CD world", it's easier now because you create WAV files for a comp CD and you can already see how much music you have, how much space is left, and you try to find a song that would fit the time there is left. But back in the cassette days, you either did that shit in your head by rounding out the times, or wrote it all on paper.

See, I always got paranoid when making my tapes. There was nothing more I hated than a song getting cut off before it was properly over. Even if I was just missing like a second or two. It was like cutting off an important thought. I'd have problems listening to the last song on the tape, knowing it was going to cut-off prematurely. I've been known to re-record the whole side of tape to make sure that shit didn't happen.

As a result, for years I could never leave like 10 or 15 seconds of empty space at the end. It always ended up a minute or two. And then on most commercially released albums, "one side may be longer than the other to preserve album continuity." Often like 10 minutes longer. So, for me, there for no real need for that auto-reverse button.

i made one of those 120 min jawns for the ride right when i started driving, i had about 6 pages of drafts and tables set up to make sure the timing was right. not only do you have to get a proper sequence to make sure the tape is dope, but yeah you gotta minimize empty space at the end of each side.

i made a bonus track at the end of when i taped myself being a dumbass on the greaseman show, that shit was rediculous.....

Praying that it didn't get cut. The most satisfying feeling was when the song ended almost exactly as the reel came to an end.

Oh shit, I see the leader tape coming in, c'mon, 5 more spins, I hear the fade of the song coming. Oh shit, two more, wait... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

Then you would go back and if you knew how to do it, you would edit the song a bit so it would be about 10 to 20 seconds shorter, just so you could hear the proper fade.

For years. Then when producers started doing interviews, I realized I wasn't alone. It's amazing, because the first time I had heard other people did it was an early interview with DJ Premier. And back then, when you wanted to make a loop of a beat, you had to count at the right spots. Definitely a math thing, especially when you wanted to try something trippy, like do a double snare. It wasn't just 1/2/3/4. You had to count in 8th or 16th, and then write that out. Such as the beat to "When The Levee Breaks".

Or when double cassette decks came along, and you could make a song flange. I remember the day that happened too, I was like "oh shit, my tapes now sound like KISS ALIVE!!!"

There's nothing worse than an improper fade at the end of a pause mixtape. Ruins the whole experience.

I actually only got good at editing the song length down when I made a series of "Best of Wu-Tang" mixtapes back in 2000. They often have like a minute of just music at the end of their tracks, so I had to figure out how to leave enough of the music on so the song would seem complete, but cut enough so I could fit all the song I needed to on the tape.

At one point in college I was actually ordering them cheap from a Deadhead-run company called Terrapin Tapes.

In Japan (id-90s) they had tapes with all kinds of funky time limits - 48, 72, etc. Had to be careful what you bought. I thik I have a mix or two at home from friends - I'll have to check out the brand label tonight.

Grateful Dead definitely kept the tapes running as well, with all the tapers recording their shows for years. So if anything, they made sure the tapes they used were of quality, and "used but not abused".

I have an old film of me skateboarding at my house when I was 5. My love of 8mm filming still exists today, and if this music thing doesn't work out for me, I would love to do films, music videos, and documentaries using 8mm cameras. They make new camera models today. It's basic, it's grainy, but it has a "home feel" to it.

and one I got in a thrift store for 10 bucks and works perfectly...came with leader, cleaner, demagnitizer and test tape...

those are dope too because you can record 2 seperate tracks on them, but one is left, one is right...you can do 4 if you flip the tape, but then playback is a mess

I also still have my Tascam 16-track reel-to-reel...that shit ain't that old though...late 80's...that's my baby.

I used to buy a grip of 120 minute Memorex's. It used to bug that there wasn't that extra sheet on the cassette card, so you wouldn't be able to write all the songs down.

Especially those of us who were kids at the time, and had parents who didn't want to mess with ''CrO2''. Yet the first cassette player I had was a Sony, part of a component system with the record player, and I loved it because it had THE best pause button ever. It was the first thing I used to make not only my mix tapes, but pause-mixes. Eventually my dad got a small Panasonic cassette deck (the one with the "Ambience" feature). For years, it was the way I made my loops.

But once I had the CrO2, there was nothing like it. And Metal was for "those special moments".

I was chargin' dudes at my high school to fix their tapes...$2.00 per tape...I had flexible scotch tape, the screwdriver that fixed my glasses (from D.O.C.) and a razorblade...

When I got to college in '96, I almost passed out at seeing the analog tape editing block complete with splicing tape - I used to look at the Radio Shack catalogs and drool at what I couldn't afford...

I had a good friend in intermediate school, and he happened to be a Jehovah's Witness. When it was lunchtime, he would gather along with the other JW's, and they always isolated themselves. I got along with everyone, and anyway, he (Troy) was cool because he liked some of the songs I liked. Plus, we both had Commodore VIC 20's so we often traded games. My mom felt that the Pac-Man for Atari 2600 was too expensive, so I had to find friends who had it. At that stage there was already Super Pac-Man, but you like to go back to the roots every once in awhile.

Anyway, Troy one day tells me "at church, did you know that you can hear backward messages if you undo the cassette case, and flip the cassette in a certain way, then rewind it?" I'm thinking no, the only way I could hear backward messages was by turning the record backwards, which of course would fuck up the record player itself.

So he shows me. He undoes the cassette, and you have the two reels. Instead of the tape going down on each side, he would flip it so that the path of the tape would look like an "S". He then pressed rewind or FF. Essentially, the tape was flipped. He then put the tape back as you would normally have it, and you are hearing the portion underneath the tape. You normally can't play the back surface, but when you record, some of it still seeps through. If it was a thin tape, like a Chrome one, the audio would be better.

He pops the tape in and it's Iron Maiden, because you know, they're Satanic. I hear the backwards guitars and drums and it's Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven", the big backward masking song. He tells me that it says "here's to my sweet Satan/the one who'll lead the path/who makes me sad/whose power is Satan". I'm thinking wow, that's cool, but not because of the message, but because one could make it go backwards simply by flipping the tape.

A year later, after I moved from Honolulu to Washington State, "Darling Nikki" came out, so I made my dub and heard Prince's message.

Looking back, it was so lo-fi, but it was "slightly" better than moving a record backwards by hand, because a cassette was steady, while for the most part your own finger was not.

on occaision a tape woud get twisted, mangled or actually break

no problem for mr wizard, just break outthe scredriver and do a little surgery (broken tapes could be repare with scotch tape....you might had a little gap inthe song, but hey...you still had your tape

after the surgery you could just re-thread, pop the screws back in and go on...well ONCE u put the tape back backwards and got quite a surprize when it played

sweet....so i immediately "reversed" the infamous "don't worry, i won't hurt you...." prince part and the rest was history as the technique was later used to make my own "clean" versions of tapes.....playing them and recording them onto a new tape

oh the heady days of youth

However, it was the first time I was ever to hack into a game and attempt to make my own patterns. I loaded up Snakman (the VIC 20 equivalent of Pac-Man, where you could actually go into the center box and eat all the ghosts over and over when they were blue, until the time expired), or Crazy Kong, and I was able to try a few new things.

But damn, a game that was probably 8k in the modern world took about 5-10 minutes to load.

In response to Reply # 0

Remember that, when you would play a tape so much, that eventually the tape would not move. Most of the time you threw it away. I'm curious to hear what others did, but when I discovered this method, it changed things for a few years.

You get the tape, and physically "snap" it as if you were breaking it apart, but not all the way. Enough to hear a physical snap. I don't know why, or why undoing the shell didn't do it but this method did, but it worked.

...seeing a wad of cassette tape on the median, after someone threw it out when it got mangled in their cassette deck. That was a weekly thing for me.

Believe it or not, there was a group out there who specifically looked for mangled tapes on the side of roads, and they would trade the results. Sometimes it was music, other times it may have been a personal message, be it kids with a birthday message, or even better, a wife talking dirty.

So if I wanted the end of a tape on a side, I would go to 550-600.

Or if you were a master, especially to show off to friends, you would have them FF in a car, and then go "NOW!" And boom, the song begins.

Yep (pulling up non-existent belt buckle), that's how we did it back then.

Not quite the same, because with a cassette, the speed of the speeded up tape would change as it went from one end to the other.

76. "For a lot of people, cassette was the first way of listening to music"
In response to Reply # 74

Mine was vinyl and 8-tracs, cassettes came a little later, but for a good ten to fifteen years there was a bit of "cassette culture", much of which has become fond memories and nostalgia. A lot of hip-hop is built on the convenience of cassette tapes, that's how much was conveniently traded. If you didn't want to loan someone a record (in fear of it never coming back), you made a dub. Back when "dub" mean making a duplicate recording on cassette.

These days, trading music is anonymous. You can still do it with CD's (and I do), but it was always cool to be able to put a tape in your pocket, catch the bus, and pop it in at home. See the handwriting, there was effort put into it, time and effort.

So, while it may not be artist related, cassettes were the way music was heard for years, even when hip-hop was entering the CD medium for the first time.
-----
Maybe it started with Sesame Street, Disneyland, or a Read-Along book, and in time it would be recording over the radio, or having a cassette recorder and Radio Shack mic to record it off of the TV and telling the family "SSSSSSHHHHH!!!" Many of these events don't happen anymore due to new technology, so it's nothing more than something to reminisce about.

In response to Reply # 0

I know y'all feel me with this...You have a tape you love, your stereo..usually car stereo eats it up..or some kind of way flips it ....or like Warren Coolidge did once, you spill a bottle of Pink Champelle on the tape (no homo with the pink champelle...that was the move back in like '89..lol) ...or sometimes that little foam tab on the inside gets bent up or broken..

anyway...the messed up tape doesn't have any screws showing to take the cover off...so you have to transplant the tape . Break the tape open....Windex always worked well to clean the tape, and to help you work the creases and folds out.....You find a tape that you don't really need anymore that has screws...take it apart and get it ready to transplant...it takes a while sometimes to clean and work out the old tape, but eventually if you can get it wound onto one of the spools...you carefully load it and wind it through....It can take a couple of hours but it's worth it if the tape is valuable..

I grew up on those cheap ass 3 packs of tapes from SupeRX, then went maxell (UR90 i think). Once I started recording, I discovered Sony CD-IT (I went digital late). These were the best tapes I ever used. i still have half a dozen of them with early demos/ instrumentals and other stuff that my friends/ artists would kill me for...

You mean this one?

http://c-90.nm.ru/cassettes/sony_metal_master_90.jpg

Those Sony Metal Masters were awesome, and they had an all ceramic case. They also were 3 times as heavy as a regular cassette but I always carried mine carefully cause it was 3 times the price too. I only put my bands' music on it. Rest of the time I would rock the TDK SA 90s cause they were the cheapest Type IIs I could find.

Always sounded great, didn't degrade fast, and you could usually fit two albums on them. I still use them to make my old-school from vinyl mixtapes.

For hip-hop mixtapes, I still preferr to use these Maxell 110 minute suckas. I like to pack as much hip-hop as possible onto one tape, and the 120 minute tapes are too flimsy for constant use.

I have a special place in my heart for the TDK Type I 90 minute jawns with the red, white and black wrappes, which I bought all through junior high and high school. That was back when I would dub like 5 or 6 songs per album, so I could fit three to four albums on one 90 minute tape.

Maxell and Sony were two of my favorites.

When I used to make mixtapes from other tapes, cds and vinyl, the sound was so rich on those two brands of tapes. I never got a clearer, crisper sound than using those. Especially the way it captured the bass was magnificent.

I just KNEW that I was the only cat that:

- LOVED the look of those Teac tapes and could never find them bitches myself (my older cousin, who even got me into making tapes had a few and would NEVER give me one of those)

- bought a specific brand of high bias tape - or even gave a fuck about what that was...as recent as 2002, I was making compilation tapes from various CDs and records I owned, and I was ALWAYS timing out the songs, adding that shit up to equal the side of a tape...

- swore by Maxell XL II's...ANY recording I made using those tapes sounded as good as the CDs they came from, if not better...

I also liked Auto-Reverse on the tape walkman, but I could NEVER get a tape walkman where the playback head for the second side sounded as good as the head for the first side...I guess I kept buying cheap shit; I could NEVER afford an official Sony tape walkman...

GREAT post Mr. Book...

one side was probably just dirtier than the other cuz you prolly used the forward direction more than the backward or vice versa...I STILL rock my Sony auto-reverse one that I stole from the Indiana University bookstore TWICE! (I dropped the first one)

but if you walking a decent distance or riding your bike, cassette walkmans are 50 times better than CD...smaller, no skipping, auto-reverse and REAL MIXTAPES

To tell you da truth I had dem all, frum K-Mart'z KMC & Certron tapez, ta Woolworth tapez, & of courze da name brand onez like Maxell, Fuji, TDK, JVC, BSAF, Sony, etc.

I still got almozt every cassette I've ever had since 1985, I waz a fiend when it came to recordin' muzik off da radio & makin' copiez of everybody else'z cassettez (I guess I waz like a lot of da katz who download albumz frum everyone elze but with cassettez).

I even have about 20 ta 30 unopened blank tapez still, I uze ta have a car with a cassette deck so when I had time I would transfer some cdz to tape & make personal mixez juz to have something to listen to while drivin', now I got new car with a CD player.

When mixtapez were big I waz doin' dem az well but now everyone switched to CDz but I got stuck with over 100 old tapez, I probably need to give away all thoze tapez but I hardly know anybody who likez underground hip-hop dat still listenz to cassettez.

... before dual cassette came out that was the only way to record your boys tapes...

We used to do this to make our own mixes.. the timing to press play and record on two different machines at the same time so you could just get that drum snippet....

you could let the other one just keep recording because you were going to have to rewind it by hand to that perfect spot to record the next piece from some other cassette.... I have to dig out my old cassette mixes...

...I figured if a cassette deck could go into a stereo, and a stereo went into the cassette deck, why not two cassette decks, using RCA connectors? Of course at that age I didn't know the proper word, I just new "White=left, Red=Right".

I used to surprise friends with that, because they did it the way you did it. I also think it was always funny when I made dubs (before double cassette decks), and people would go "is it okay to talk right now?" I would say "yes, I'm recording it with these wires, the mics are cut off".

General reply: "oh!"

I used to buy a brick of them cheap ass sony HF-90's at the Wiz EVERY Friday for years...then graduated to the TDK 90's. It was PERFECTION when a album fit perfectly on one side of a tape, and you got 2 albums from the same group on one tape..you didnt THINK about dropping a song off the album if it didnt fit on one side, like you would with burning a 84 minute album onto a cd...you had to retain the purity of the project...

And I had the Maxell UR-90s for my "Wine and Candlelight" slow jam mixes, ALL 54 of which I STILL have at arm's reach from the computer where im typing this. When i got an intership at WHUR, I would bring a pack of blank tapes with me to overnight shifts and get my dub on HARD. YES, I could look in a desk drawer full of unlabeled tapes and tell you what was on each tape in sequence...YES, I was the tape repair expert, especially since my sister had the busted ass box with no DOOR on the tape player, but you could still prop them in EXACTLY right and listen. I was a bootleg Phil Spector with the scientific tape repair and extraction. When Fisher component sets with the built in EQ were the SHIT, i could retrive a chewed up tape in MINUTES. YES I have made tapes by leaning the tape recorder up against the speaker and leaving the room. YES, I would lose my damn mind if one of the St. Louis heads in here has ANY tape of Dr. Jockenstein's High School Roll Call from WESL in the early 80's...and YES I had the "Battle Box", the shoebox of tapes with all the freshest shit that i could shut DOWN a party with RIGHT NOW.

This post is KILLING me...

- My boy showed me the method of pulling the tape to the black at the beginning of your mix so you never risked the recording process coming in late and you never wasted a second of tape.

- I had a pretty cheap stereo but it had two great features that I don't know why weren't included on every stereo ever made: 1) It could count the time backwards so you knew when the song was going to end and 2) It had an 11 second fade button. Nothing better than getting what you want or need out of a song and fading that shit. Esp. hiphop songs where you needed one verse and not the others you could just hit fade on the 2nd hook and it would clear right out. I was so upset when my new Technics system didn't do this.

- Anyone else used to have your stereo hooked up to your TV/VCR for not only the bootleg surround system but to record movie quotes to your mixtapes? That was it right there.

- I still make mix CD's and e'rything but there really never will be anything like the hands on experience of making the perfect tape. Right down to making up a title and tagging up the spine. Priceless. Never to be duplicated. That shit used to be religious. I'd get blunted and go to work like a scientist in the lab...

Huh. I wish I had learned that. I always did it by sound. There's always this only slightly hiss/click when the tape starts rolling into the black. I'd wait to hear that hiss/click then press reocrd and play. I'd less maybe a second or so.

Jeez, not only is this post great for nostalgia sake, it's also informative as hell. One of the best post I've read during by allbeit brief time in this forum. Props.

My tape of choice was by far the TDK SA-90:
http://c-90.nm.ru/cassettes/tdk_sa_90_d.jpg

and when I could afford 'em I'd splurge and get the SA-X-90's
http://c-90.nm.ru/cassettes/tdk_sa-x_90_b.jpg
(thought I died and went to heaven first time I bought these joints)

And if all else failed (my spot sold out of the TDK's) I'd go with the Maxell XL-II's (90 minutes, of course)
http://c-90.nm.ru/cassettes/maxell_xl_2_90_d.jpg

Used to make 8 track demos and mixtapes with these shits... now its all been replaced by 1's and 0's.

these were my go to tapes:
http://c-90.nm.ru/cassettes/maxell_xl_2_90_d.jpg

and these:
http://c-90.nm.ru/cassettes/maxell_xl_2_music_90.jpg

were my shit

I also used these at times :
http://c-90.nm.ru/cassettes/sony_hi-fi_90.jpg

I actually preferred them to CDs, especially before I got a computer with a CD burner. I would either buy tapes or buy CDs and put em to tape. To me CDs were wack because you couldn't record on em at first, and even when they came out with recordable CDs, you either needed it on your computer or had to buy one of those expensive decks.

The only thing CDs had going for them was instant access to songs...CDs got on my nerves because they were so damn fragile. I can't tell you how many I had and fucked up with scratches. I remember making the mistake of keeping my Reasonable Doubt CD in my coat pocket for a few seconds walking outside and finding that I shattered it to pieces.

I stayed with tapes til 2001, then I moved to CDs & Minidisc. That's like a comfortable in between for me...I would buy CDs and transfer em like in the old days, but I could also skip back and forth between tracks. I wonder why those never caught on...

I made a fucking gang of tapes from 1995 thru 2000...I had been making tapes before that but not with the level of seriousness of that five year period....

but MAXELL was crisp as fuck...but you cant record over them with much success...I always thought my record heads were fucked up....

that shit was the standard....nothing else will do....

I found a couple Fuji shits that I liked but they discontinued them all....

the next year, I copped a CD burner...

LOL @ cats calling them shits "Maxwells"....

One of these days, Im gonna go thru and catalog my shit...

That was the big fear. You figured "wow, I can put maybe three albums worth on this", or two good rap albums on a tape, one on each side.

Most people who know how to do tape>CD transfers will not need this, but as something conveinent, it would be great.

Damn awesome post.

Yeah, my tapes of choice were Maxells XLS-II,XL-1, Sonys, TDK, and Denons. Back in high school I fucked with the normal bias but once I got my first crO2 it was on. I would use my Xmas money to get a two 10 bricks of those XLS-II and head over the by friends house to tape all the prince shit he had and other cool stuff. He has every b-side/12inch/extended b-side and large collection of 'unreleased' stuff. I still have all of those tapes and they still sound dope. You have to master the whole recording level slider or knob to have crispy sounding tapes.

My pet peeves with tapes:

Giving someone a a good tape(maxell xls-ii) for them to give you a mix and they give you a busta a yellow and purple normal bias tape trying to convince you it is the same tapes. Nigga those tapes are like 10 for 7 bucks. My brick was 20 bucks . How in the hell is that the same mofo.

Fools with bad hand writing fucking up up the labels and inserts. Just write the shit out on a post-it and I'll do the shit myself you chicken-scratch writing mother fucker.
