i hear that actual brazillians don't like astrud really. they she is just marketed for a U.S. audience. i can't see people frontin on this song tho. i also like rosa passos' version, who i hear is much more respected in brazil.

I can see that. Alot of her songs are sung (poorly at times in English). I tried to link up one of her better pop songs though.

I really don't need it tho. I'm literally up to my eyeballs in Brazilian stuff. I think I have most of Caetano, Milton, Gilberto, Chico's quality stuff (the Caetano alone ... damn near his entire catalogue ... is a mile high) as well as many good Bethania (damn ... that voice).

and of course this is just the bulk of the tropicalia stuff (did you ever read Caetano's book? classic) then ther's everything else Brazilian. LOL.

Anyway, I have no idea what I'm doing up at almost midnight posting up here, but there's a service to be provided.

peace.

it gave me such a deep appreciation for what they were all trying to do. And Caetano is just a brilliant writer ... I can only imagine how much more deep the book is in Portuguese. His command of language has always been astonishing.

but ... yeah ... it really made me reflect on my own music in new ways ... the role of music and the musician ... how it can be (perhaps NEEDS to be) tied to other art forms to create communities/movements. Just amazing stuff.

This many argues is his best work ... the peak of his peak years. Others say it is too overblown. As one reviewer describes "It is a portrait of an artist that has realized his potential and now enjoys the view from the great height he has achieved."

The songs are thick and rootsy. Here he achieves his most involved of his signature hybrid sound that combines african and indigenous Brazilian folkloric traditions, Catholic choral music (he was raised in Minas Geraes, a Catholic stronghold, and a place that would imprint on Milton its distinct harmonies), and of course his love for the Beatles.

We begin with:

MInas is another fine example of Milton's classic work. Although many people like the following year's Geraes better, this album stands on its own. For me it is one of his best overall albums ... another of his strongholds was the sequencing of his albums; each album had a good sense of flow between songs and ranges of moods it would cover. Here is a sampling of what he was up to during those classic years. Again, all of the elements of classic Milton are there,

Saudade Dos Avies da Panair (Conversando No Bar)

Idolatrada
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3PIP3AYTK0BCM13PNJ9I52502D
(this one goes through many movements, starting "heavy" and ending "lighter" with complex Beatles-esque orchestration. Just goes to show that the art of "building" a song doesn't always have to lead higher and higher)

In 1976, Milton was wildly popular in Brazil, but had yet to reach out to American audiences. The same year Geraes came out, he enlisted the help of Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock to do an album of some of his best songs to date simply called Milton. Also in his band were Brazilian powerhouses Airto Moreira on percussion and Roberto Silva on drums. Milton would often record a song of his a few times, sometimes with different lyrics, but utilizing the same music. He did this many times over in english, and would often record his earlier songs with the original Portuguese lyrics interspersed with his English ones.

Here are two songs from Milton (1976)

Another US release came in 1979 with Journey to Dawn. Again, on this album he took many of his classic Brazilian songs and reinterpreted them with English lyrics. Sometimes this worked well, other times it didn't. Here is my all-time favorite track from this album, O Cio da Terra, a beatiful and haunting song about the fruits of the Earth that he co-wrote with Chico Buarque. This is the perfect example of what I was talking about in my post about BUILDING a song in terms of each verse bringing something new (even though it is basically the same chord structure again and again). Here you can see the Portuguese and English verses trading back and forth. In this case, the English verses didn't in any way compromise the intention of the song.

86. "MILTON - early 70's"
In response to Reply # 70

Let us continue building the "introduction to Miltonj Nascimento mixtape" with two cuts from his early 70s albums.

The first comes from 1970's self-titled Milton. It is actually a bonus track from the Japanese reissue, and is a vision of things to come with the following year's Clube da Esquina 1. In this powerful song, Milton brings a very harsh critique on the forgetfulness which takes hold of brazilians around the world cup time, therefore being also a larger metaphor for the 'brazilian way of LEAVING' milton sings)"(...)in these 90 minutes/ of emotion and happiness/ I forget home and work/ life stays outside/ hunger stays outside/ everything stays outside..."

o homen da sucursal

The next song is from his 1971 classic CLube da Esquina, what many feel is his best work, or at least the beginning to his most creative writing era. This song is a classic.

I have two or three versions of Milton doing Maria Maria, but not with Ultimo Trem. I personally like the Clube da Esquina 2 version the best.

What is THIS one from?

In response to Reply # 70

This CD is often called the flipside to 1975's Minas, and continues his tribute to the place of his birth (Minas Geraes). Like Minas, the sequencing of this album is amazing, and the end result can often leave you with goosebumps. Much of the music here is softer, more layered yet simple and haunting.

The two songs I include here should be at the end of your Milton mix CD. ENJOY fam!

I know that I'm going against popular opinion but I like Maria Toledo much more than Astrud. Her voice isn't as cheesy/kitchsy. I don't know if anyone else feels this way but Maria's voice is enchanting in some way.

not a samba but it's great chillout summer music with some samba flavor.

sorry, don't have a link for you, but someone on here might be able to hook you up.

believe it's from the Verve Remixed 3 album.

also, might want to look for red hot + rio. little old now but if i remember right there are some good tracks on there.

My guys The Boom from Japan seem to be on it... but I can't find a tracklisting that tells you who plays what song.

Speaking of the Boom, I tried to upload tracks from their 'Far East Samba' and 'Tropicalism' records, to no avail. Maybe I'll try 'Afrosick' tomorrow - all three of those are amazing. (Though not a Brazilian band, those three records are very Brazilian-flavored.)

Liners are all in Portuguese, so I don't know that much about where it came from or why it wsa made. But it seems to be some sort of tag-team samba thing - all the tracks are collabos - your man Caetano sings with someone named Zeca Pagodinho on the lead track.

This was an album that Gil recorded with Sambista GERMANO MATHIAS. It is an amazing to have found this on the 'seek a while back, since I don't think it has been released on CD. At least it is not on Amazon (where I found Gil's QUILOMBO soundtrack!!!!!!! I can't wait till I have the $ so I can buy it immediately.)

the tracklisting is:

1 Acertei no milhar

(Geraldo Pereira - Wilson Batista)
Interpretaçăo: Gilberto Gil

2 Falso rebolado

(Venâncio - Jorge da Costa)
Interpretaçăo: Germano Mathias

3 Escurinho

(Geraldo Pereira)
Interpretaçăo: Gilberto Gil

4 Minha pretinha

(Jair Gonçalves - Edison Borges)
Interpretaçăo: Germano Mathias

5 Senhor delegado

(Jaú - Antoninho Lopes)
Interpretaçăo: Gilberto Gil

6 Minha nega na janela

(Firmo Jordăo - Germano Mathias)
Interpretaçăo: Gilberto Gil

7 Năo volto para casa

(Oswaldo Guilherme - Denis Brean)
Interpretaçăo: Germano Mathias

8 A situaçăo do Escurinho

(Padeirinho - Aldacyr Louro)
Interpretaçăo: Gilberto Gil

9 Rua

(Jair Gonçalves)
Interpretaçăo: Germano Mathias

10 Samba rubro-negro

(Jorge de Castro - Wilson Batista)
Interpretaçăo: Gilberto Gil

I also put some bonus tracks on there:

11 Quilombo (from the soundtrack)

12 Patuscada de Gandhi (with the Filhos de Gandhi Afoxe)

13 Oju Oba (from the Afros e Afoxes da Bahia CD)

enjoy!

Gilles Peterson in Brazil is a must have. Another good one is The City of God soundtrack.

I recently swooped up the self-titled Tom & Joyce album. The whole thing is love. You'd never guess Joyce was French considering the way she sings in Portugese. My favorite track on that album is Queixume.

the band is of course the Boom... the song is listed as 'Tsuna No Misaki' (The Blooming of the Sand), and if you listen closely you'll hear the male lead shift into a bit of an impersonation of Milton's lead for the last verse (sung in Portuguese).

The arrangement is a bit soft-rock but still very lovely. From the fantastic 'Tropicalsim - O Degrees' record.

I know it saved as a .wma when I uploaded it.

Very, very weird. I tried the download, got it no problem.

I can try to save it as a .mp3, but that might have the same effect it did for the Vinicius song I tried to change over. Hmph.

Anyway, sorry I froze your computer. THe song might be available at www.five-d.co.jp - they're sort of an OKP for Japanese roots-rock and they host an English homepage for the Boom & Miyazawa (who's recorded with Carlinhos Brown, Max Castro, Marco Suzano, etc.)

but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Anyone interested in any of these:

Mestre Negativo - berimbrown (Brazilian funk a-la James Brown)
Grupo Bataque - Afrika Brazil (amazing rootsy AfroBrazilian "jazz")

I'll up a couple of tracks from each if you want. Right now I'm trying to figure out if I need to keep upping stuff that you all clearly should hear or if I should call it a night (esp since I really can't leave without upping at least a couple of Carlinhos Brown tracks)

I know getting all this music out there is what this post is all about, but I think we should also be letting each other know who some of these artists are as well.

Here's some info on Berimbrown:

***************************

Maria Goretti district in the northeast region of Belo Horizonte, 1997. The steep street is gradually being taken by people who move around the sidewalks, trying to find their way leaning against the walls or simply sitting on the ground - a natural urban stage, made of asphalt. Dozens of children with painted faces and afro-like clothes look for their places side by side.

It has been like this since 1991. From time to time that forgotten spot placed in the suburbs of the second biggest economical center of the country shows its warrior soul teenagers carrying drums hanging from their necks, wooden sticks in their hands, strength in the arms and in the mind. The Afro reggae atmosphere could cause some discomfort, as if Salvador had slipped down from the map, had Minas Gerais not been the second state with the biggest black population in the country.

As a cultural "quilombo" (quilombo was the name of the place where runaway slaves used to live), the Maria Goretti district pulsantes under the stick of a condutor who came out of the capoeira. The brilliant eyes of the children who carry drums bigger than themselves stare at their neighbor Ramon with admiration. With Rasta hair the afro conductor Ramon silences the zum-zum-zum sound with only one movement of his arm. Such respect was achieved on the daily consistent work, year after year, trying to turn poor schoolboys into artists to be.

After being turned into a Master in the "capoeira" baptism, Ramon is now known as Master Negoativo. Along with his sister Valéria in the vocals and with the tree stick in hand, Master Negoativo spends whole nights conducting a rhythm which can make 1500 people move.

ln the middle of the group a thin teenager already stands out, with the ancestor rhythm running in his veins, producing a strong and involving beat on his drums. ln the background another boy performs seriously and strongly and strongly, as if showing the world that he knows and really means what he is doing. Around them more and more unknown faces start writing a different a story made of persistence and dignity, a story which goes against all the adversities and negative statistics present in the police reports.

But the "samba-reggae" performed for 7 years starts accepting pieces of other references. The year or 1990 spent in Belgium by Master Negoativo would add many "afro-stickers" to his "musical baggage". The friendship made with people from Congo with the same genealogical background, and the memories of his childhood in Maria Goretti with all the processions and other celebrations in the Mozambique style start to blossom.

The Afro movement start breaking itself into pieces. lt no longer exists in the same way in Master Negaotivo's mind, which is now boiling with new information. A new group starts being created from the debris of the old one. Just coming out of adolescence with a mature voice now, Alexandre starts exercising it. Some other kids are called to take over the drums. The next door neighbour who has a bass guitar decides to join group. The other one with his guitar becomes aware of what is going on and comes along. They bring with them all the ancestor musical baggage from the most varied sources, ranging from rhythms of Minas Gerais to the universal African beat.

The group entertains many different districts in the city of Belo Horizonte, playing what is already part of their DNA; a mixture of funk and soul. The first lyrics start coming into shape; they talk about "berimbau", an instrument which is the symbol of doing much with very little. They talk about everyday life, hardships and about the poetry of those who fight to have their daily bread.

They talk about the fate of at least 3 thirds of the population in the country, that is, those who have wishes. Using powerful words the suburb exercises its voice meaningfully, with groove, rhythm, and sincerity. The Congopop is thus established.

Berimbrown is on the road.

from his most recent (I think ... this guy is incredibly prolific. Every time I blink he's got a new album out) CD with Bebo Valdez called "el milagro de candeal" The whole CD, like everything this guy touches (remind me to up some Tribalistas tomorrow), is amazing. Here is the closer of the album, a medley of many of his songs (some solo, others from Tribalistas, others from Timbalada).

enjoy, and thanks for such a great posting day @ OKP!

from the much-maligned US release Omelete Man

i mean, i understand why cats didn't feel that album... Marisa Monte's production was rather "commercial" and some of the English lyrics were ridiculously corny, but he had some decent songs on there, particular the ballads. here's some of my faves:

In 2002, Carlinhos Brown teamed up with neo-tropicalistas Arnaldo Antunes and Marisa Monte to create the intimate and lush sounding album, Tribalistas. The album soared to the #1 position on the Brazilian charts in 2003. Here are a coupld of the best tracks.

and here's the full quote in my sig, taken from Charles Fuller's "A Soldier's Play" (or the movie, A Soldier's Story, if you will):

"You know the damage one ignorant Negro can do? We were in France in the 1st war; we had won decorations. But the white boys had told all them French gals that we had tails. Then they found this ignorant colored soldier, paid him to tie a tail to his ass and run around half naked making monkey sounds. Put him on this big round table in the Cafe Napoleon... Put a reed in his hand, a crown on his head, a blanket on his shoulders and made him eat *bananas* in front of all of them frenchies! Oh, the white boys danced that night. Passed out leaflets with that boys picture on it... Called him 'Moonshine' - King of the Monkeys. And when we slit his throat you know that fool asked us what he had done wrong?!" - Sgt. Waters

Just when I thought I was done with this thread (muahahahahaha), I thought it would be a crime without doing Caetano some real justice up here. But where to begin? It was easy with Milton, because there was a very clear era of his work that I wanted to focus on ... but with Caetano, he has been so consistently amazing for his entire career, and gone through many different periods and styles, that it is hard to know where to begin.

So for today, just because it was the first CD I threw on this morning as I cooked my fish and eggs, I present you with some cuts of his 1991 classic Circulado.

In response to Reply # 159

This one of Caetano's first albums after he returned from exile in London. Veloso and Gilberto Gil had been briefly imprisoned by the military dictatorship in Brazil, and upon their release they had left the country and settle in the UK. In that sense, this shows in its contrasting mood with the music he recorded while away from his land.

The arrangements are often overly simple (though not simplistic), and show off his quiet, thoughtful and minimalistic side. Not everyone will be feeling these like I do, but it wouldn't be right not to include something that represents Caetano during these years.

This is one of my favirote Caetano albums of all time. On it he is joined by another of my favorite Brazilian musicians, Carlinhos Brown, and the combination is nothing short of extrodinary. Again, this CD shows us his experimental side, mixing (cannibalizing, as he would call it) things Brazilian with elements of Rock, funk, and avante garde.

His lyrics continue to show off his way with words. Here's an example from the title track (the first download). It begins like this:

The painter Paul Gaughin loved the light of Guanabara Bay
The composer Cole Porter loved the lights of her night Guanabara Bay
The anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss detested Guanabara Bay
It looked to him like a toothless mouth
And I -- if I knew her less would I love her more?
I'm blind from so often seeing her, from so often staring starry ...
What is a beautiful thing?
Love is blind
Ray Charles is blind
Stevie Wonder is blind
and Hermeto the albino doesn't really see very well
A whale, a soap opera, a lute, a train, a parrot
But Guanabara was beautiful and toothless at the same time
In which had taken place, takes and will take place the rare nightmare
That I here begin to build
Always searching for the beautiful and the bitter

the song ends like this:

And I hear voices
Of two that tell me
In a double sound
Like they've been sampled non a synclavier
"The hour of someone's re-education has arrives
The father, the son, and the holy ghost amen
What's right is shock therapy for madmen
What's right is to know that right is right
The adult white male always in command
And the rest take the rest, sex is the cut: sex
To recognize the value and necessity of the hypocritical act
Cross out the Indians, expect nothing form the blacks."
And I, less a stranger to this place than in the moment
Go on alone walking against the wind
And understand the core of what they are saying
It's an unmasking - a single cry
The King is naked!
But I wake up because all becomes silent
Before the fact that the King is more beautiful naked
And I go on and love the blue, the purple and the yellow
And between my going and that of the sun: a hoop, a link.

*sigh* they just don't write song like they used to ...

Here are three from this album:

in celebration of aliens over "the man" (the MJ victory) I give you Caetano Veloso's stirring bossa nova rendition of BILLIE JEAN! It is actually very beautiful, and he combines it with Nega Maluca in the beginning and the Beatles Elanor Rigby at the end.

This is an amazing track.

Unfortunately I can't put anything up to share, but just trust that all of her 70's albums (from 71 through 79) are ridiculous. I think somebody already mentioned her album with Jobim...one of my favorites of all time.

Another great chill album is Nelson Angelo and Joyce (self-titled). To this day I still haven't heard anything like it...great for a bright summer day or quiet summer night.

This is an awesome post. On the strength of this I will be spending some serious money at dustygroove to get some more Milton (all I have is Minas) and Caetano.

184. "let's talk about ANTHROPOPHAGISMO"
In response to Reply # 0

This is a powerful trope in Brazilian artistic consciousness, and literally means the embodiment of cannibalism.

This is the vision of the modernist poet Oswald de Andrade, who's 1928 Manifesto Anthropophago (Cannibal Manifesto) would have a profound effect on Caetano Veloso, who read the book in the late 60's when he and other poets, filmmakers, musicians, painters and performers would be giving birth to the Tropicalia movement.

The basic premise of anthropophagismo is a need "to assimilate the foreign experience into the Brazilian spicies, and to reinvent it in our own terms, with the ineluctable local qualities that will endow the resulting product with an autonomous character ..." (de Campos) In other words, to be truly Brazilian required a cannibalizing -- or devouring -- of other cultural forms and mixing them into the melting pot that Brazil already was.

In Caetano's words, "we were 'eating' the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. {the anthropophagic vision} is a decision in favor of precision rather than a panecea to solve the problem of identity in Brazil. ... Anthropophagy ... is a means of radicalizing the demand for identity, not a denial of question."

The idea of cannibalism as a trait of national identity in Brazil is something that has great appeal to me, and there are many great bands and musicians that go along with this vision. I'll post up some tracks below.

In response to Reply # 184

Karnak's music embodies anthropophagismo to the fullest. Within their CDs, they cannibalize everything from Russian Opera to Hindustani music, to Reggae and blend them seamlessly with Brazilian rhythms and musical forms. This is world pop music at its most intriguing, as the band always carries with it a sense of humor and playfulness. This is taken to a whole other level in their live show, where the group's players take on different characters and cultural roles as each song and motif unfolds.

Here is a brief sampling.

In response to Reply # 0

Before I let this post sink into Lesson obscurity, I thought I'd post up one more section of music from Bahia. Bahia, as many people have argued, is one of the strongest outposts of Africa in the Americas, and many of the traditions from the Bantu, Yoruba, Congo peoples brought as slaves have been retained and built upon.

I'll start this final section with ...

195. "SAMBA REGGAE"
In response to Reply # 193

Samba Reggae is to Bahia as Crabcakes are to Maryland, and Ile Aiye has been the protector and maintainer of the pure afro-brasilian manifestation of this music, culture and tradition for 26 years. Listeninig to Ile Aiye You get to know the pure percussive and melodic base of the Bahian popular and more commercial "samba-reggae" music styles (poularised somewhat in the US by Olodum's participation on Paul SImon's Rhythm of the Saints). Ile Aiye's songs are about celebrating their African heritage and traditions, as well as struggling against colonialism and Eurocentrism in Brazil and Africa.

I present to you ... Ile Aiye

And here is some more contemporary Samba Reggae from Olodum. They started out as a pure percussion group like Ile Aiye, but added instruments as they saw that there was commercial potential to the traditional Samba Reggae rhythms.

205. "TIMBALADA"
In response to Reply # 193

Timbalada was formed in the early 1990s by Salvador's megastar, Carlinhos Brown. The group is named after the timbal, a small hand held drum which he designed. Today, Timbalada is one of Bahia's most popular bands, featuring 120 instrumentalists (most of them drummers). Based in the neighborhood of Candeal, Timbalada is also a neighborhood association. Timbalada's social mission includes educational projects, and aid to street children. "Like many cities in Brazil," says Brown, "we have many many street children. One of our projects is working with these kids, allowing them to work with professional musicians, and play with a wide variety of instruments."

One of the recording landmarks of Timbalada was the album Măe De Samba (Mother of Samba), a record that looks at some of the links between Afro-Bahian and Carioca (Rio de Janeiro) percussion and features Rio's legendary sambista, Alcione. Timbalada is also one of the most important carnival groups in Brazil. Almost like clockwork, every year, they seem to create songs that become carnival anthems in Bahia, including "A Latinha" and "Zorra" blending the Bahian bloco-afro percussion with a hard-hitting funk edge. Even more spectacular are the shows that Timbalada put on atop their "Trio Electrico" (Trio Electrico is the term used in Bahia for the huge tractor trailer trucks that most bands use to perform on during carnival). The entire band, along with hundreds of dancers appear in little more than shorts and are covered from head to toe in stripes of white paint. With their songs and corresponding athletic dances, they bring the Bahian crowds to a frenzy.

206. "AFROS & AFOXES"
In response to Reply # 193
Fri Jun-17-05 02:28 PM by el_rey

Caetano once said, "Bahia is the most black part of Brazil. The majority of the population is black, and we have the traditional African religions still ... untouched. Although they have all these fusions with Catholic myths and liturgy, they still have the whole ritual structures intact, so it gives Bahia a very different atmosphere and cultural environment."

Hopefully you have been getting an appreciation of what he was talking about through this series of links from Bahia. The following tracks are taken from Bahia's tradition of blocos afros and afoxes, or the groups that play during Bahia's carnival. The afros are more informal while the afoxes mix their cultural celebration with religious elements.

Enjoy this final post in the music-of-Bahia section!

noone's posted anything from Laswell's Bahia Black - Ritual Beating System yet. I know there are some Laswell heads up here, and that stuff needs to be shared with those who don't have this already. In many ways it was basically the album that introduces Americans (USA) to Carlinhos Brown.

I don't have the time to post any more right now. I figure this album is out there enough that someone else will have it.

Don't have much in the way of Brazilian DnB other than LK. I do have Barcelona which has that same sort of feel with the Latin guitar rhythm but nothing else really from Brazilian producers.

before i went to brazil??? i went music shopping and didn't know squat.

i did get a couple brazillian hip hop cd's.

one cd that might fit under what you're looking for is by this group called grooveria. they label their music as acoustic electronic. pretty cool stuff.

I wanted to contribute something in exchange for all the great tracks I've taken, but I wanted to post something that was a little different from what's already up, so here's the first Secos e Molhados album:

s28.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=047KNQRPL3U821CKOEVGOLW5RS

A lot of people will probably already know this album.

Stylistically, it's usually described as folk-rock, but the group is heavy on theatrics, which also comes across in the music.

I'm not as big a fan of this as I am Milton, Veloso, Gil, etc, but it still has its place and is actually pretty good.

by Madlib. I was listening to "Promessa de Pescador" off of Primal Roots and 30 seconds when the handclaps and tambourines come in i realised ive heard the rhythm before. Sampled on Yesterday's New Quintet's "Stevie" tribute from "Superstition".

Dope stuff.

Thanks for the uploads though. i have had i slight liking for latin jazz after Chick Corea's Return to Forever & after hearing some Flora Purim stuff. Im somewhat light on my knowledge of artists but im gonna be on it even more now.

Caetano is at times a "thick" read, but you won't be let down. It is the best of history, philosophy and storytelling all rolled up.

He jumps around alot so you can too. There is so much in that book it really deserves a whole other thread.

one of my favorite parts of the book:

"The United States is a country without a name: America is the name of the continent where, among others, the states that were once English colonies united. Brazil is a name without a country. The Englisah seem to have stolen the name of the continent and given it to the country they founded. The Portuguese seem not to have really founded a country, but managed to suggest that they landed in a part of America that was absolutely Other, and they called it Brazil. ... The parallel with the United States is inevitable. If all the countries in the world today must measure themselves against "America," ... Brazil's case is even more acute, since the miror image is more evident and the alienation more radical. Brazil is America's other giant, the other melting pot of races and cultures, the other promisded land to European and Asian immigrants, the Other. The double, the shadow, the negative image of the great adventure of the New World.

... From the depths of the dark solar heart of the southern hemisphere, from inside a mix of races that constituters neither a degradation nor a genetic utopia, from the befouled and healing guts of the global entertainment industry, from the island of Brazil ever floating barely suspended above the real ground of America, come these words, translated, rising out of the mists of the Portuguese, limited in their powers but still serving to bear witness and to ask why certian relationships exist between different groups, individuals, artistic forms, commercial transactions, and political forces."

I just got put on to this album. It is Andre Abujamra's "o infinito de pe" and it is FUCKING AMAZING. Since he is the founder of Karnak (don't know who they are? ... see here: http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=208839&mesg_id=208839&listing_type=search#217393)
this CD is an amazing blend of many different styles. Think of Brazilian rhythms interspersed with drum & bass, glazing guitar riffs, Indian modalities, just all around great music! Track 5 is particularly interesting ... made me think of what Jimi Hendrix would be doing if he were still alive and into drum & bass (although the guitar work would be more amazing of course).

Again, I couldn't think of which tracks to upload so here's the entire album. I can't stop listening to this stuff.

enjoy!

That song has been in my head for about a year now. I first heard it on the Gilles Peterson comp and it's one two other comps that i have. I need to put up DJ Spinna's comp. I like better than that Gilles comp and the Wax Poetic comp. Hopefully I'll get around to putting some more stuff up. Maybe Gal Costa's self-titled album from '69. The one with the feather boa cover.

I'm not gonna let this post drop this summer, there's just so much stuff to put up. It's a shame the New Funky Soul can get an anchor but not this. Oh well.

Special thanks to AFKAP and El Ray for schooling me on music I thought I knew a lot about already.

Maria Toledo is my favourite female brazilian signer. Here's another track from the album Braziliana.

Does anyone else know if she's had any other releases? I know she was on the Bonfa/Getz album.
