Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece
by Ashley Kahn, Jimmy Cobb

there were two books on KOB that came out last year, but this was by far the better of the two.

Great read, quick read, informative read.

i loved how it had the pay stubs from the sessions.

Coltrane made $60 for working on KOB damn!

INCREDIBLE BOOK.

It is just comprised of interviews conducted by drummer Arthur Taylor with pretty much every big name int he jazz world.

I love this book b/c the interviews arent conducted by a scholar, but by a peer. Also he has a few basic questions that he asks multiple people.

-How Do you tune your drums?

-black power movement and jazz?

-electronis in jazz?

the variety of answers is very interesting

pick it up if you see it

dont laugh.

while its blue's counterpart is pretty much garbage, this colume of that For Dummies series is actually very well done. It breaks it done by instrument and then goes thorugh the changes of jazz with respect to that instrument.

It covers all the bases, and gives newbies a great first experience with the included sampler CD.

In response to Reply # 2

Miles' autobiography is a whirlwind tour of the people, places, and sounds of the history of jazz. Famous for it's outlandish comments and frequent use of the word "motherfucker," it's Miles unleashed. A Bible-like reference book for any aspiring musician/artist. The only fault's I see are Miles' shortcomings in telling the whole story due to years of drug abuse and his ego.

This book is part autobiography and part fiction. It's crazy, but it's well-written and insightful. Interestingly, it was recommended to me not as a souce on jazz or Mingus, but as a document of 20th century African American sociology. Buy and read this book!

No one really knows much about Duke's private life, and even this book is really vague. A great insight into the man, but not much of an information source on his music, his band members, or his private life.

The autobiography is called "Jaco" ...it's a pretty good book. It breaks down the mystery & mystique of Jaco-world's greatest electric bass player. It has some insightful interviews w/ those that knew him best: Mike Stern, Joe Zawinul...ect...you leave this book w/ a profound respect for musicians & what we go through in the quest for the highest level of musicianship.

"Fight the Power" by Chuck D. Great behind the scenes insights about Hip-Hop and the music biz in general. Easy to read, but not 'dumbed down'.

"The New Beats" great music history stuff here. Examines how many (if not all) musical forms relate to Hip-Hop. Names major players and geographical locations...

"Dancing in the Streets: Motown and the Cultural Politics of Detroit" by Suzanne Smith

Just read this one. A really fascinating look at Motown in the specific context of Detroit, with a particular focus on it's importance in African-American culture. Most motown stuff focuses so much on the cross-over aspects of Motown, but this has a interesting perspective.

By Dave Marsh and...someone else (Can't remember their name right now), plus a whole bunch of contributers. Its a completely frivolous read, but very entertaining. The title is quite misleading as the book covers heaps of genres, including hip hop, funk, soul, etc. So good I had to steal my sig from it.

What about a music library called "The Lesson library"

put it in philly since it is okayplayer and have catalog of cdrs/cds/lps/books/films/document footagetapes what have you/ across the board from Foley to Albert King to Joni to Prince to roots to Marvin Gaye to Dj Logic to D'angelo to P-funk to Marley BUT have it be all music. Have artists contribute archives who have passed on.

maybe make it so you can listen online on a high clarity stream for those aint in philly have a lp each week up.

The lessons okayplayer library

I think it would be cult ...especially since people are gonna be "holed" up fairly soon from biological threats you gotta capitalize on it.

and have some okayers run it from grants.

you got 100 years of recorded music you can make it a entire library and have instrument rooms/studio

just combine the library/demo studio THAT would be ill.

I'm reading a book on juju right now, actually called "Juju", by Christopher Alan Waterman. I'm only about a quarter through it... i always balance strange pairs... i'm reading Thomas Merton's autobiography at the same time...

Actually didn't enjoy the most recent issue of the Fader as much as I had enjoyed past issues, but still the best magazine out right now, I think.

"This album is by far the greatest piece of writing, arranging, producing, and sequencing genius I've ever encountered. Anyone who has heard the first two Swamp Dogg albums will possibly say impossible, but after listening to this one will make the cross-over to incredible. The only album that may possibly compare with this one is the one that I'm contemplating doing the late future. Everything that is neccessary to make an album I have; Ego, talent, originality, humor, and I am dynamic, articulate, defiant, altruistic, considerate, warm, wonderful, & humble... I have also been a Grammy nominee for the past two years. I'm also a Cancer (July 12) and twenty nine years in the world. What you've just read is my trip, and if you can't tolerate it, that's your trip."
