""PLAYER" BEAT DISSECTED"

I went back to "Rappers Delight" to see where Jay Dee could've taken his stuff. To my surprise : ALL drumsounds can be found CLEAN in "Rappers Delight".
- Every second clap in the intro is clean.
- Hihat-loop clean (right after the clean clap).
- A few kicks in the same intro have NO BASS underneath 'm, so : clean as well.

Here's the evidence :

first, the entire loop where the samples have been taken from :
http://users.skynet.be/krewcial/JAYDEE_PLAYER/fulloop.mp3

Now, here's the part where the kick is ...
http://users.skynet.be/krewcial/JAYDEE_PLAYER/kickloop.mp3

It sounds like the kick is everything but clean, BUT ... when you chop it up, this is what you find :
http://users.skynet.be/krewcial/JAYDEE_PLAYER/kick.mp3
... as clean as can be ...

The clap and hihat are even more open and clean :
http://users.skynet.be/krewcial/JAYDEE_PLAYER/claphihatloop.mp3

Chopped up, this gives us ...
a) the clap
http://users.skynet.be/krewcial/JAYDEE_PLAYER/clap.mp3

b) the hihat
http://users.skynet.be/krewcial/JAYDEE_PLAYER/hihat.mp3
(the hihat has a lot of low frequency, so this needs to be taken care of when mixing)

Now, if we put all these drumsounds together and program it like JayDee did, you get something like this :
http://users.skynet.be/krewcial/JAYDEE_PLAYER/PLAYER_BEAT.mp3

or ... a more crispy version, with different EQ for the hihats :
http://users.skynet.be/krewcial/JAYDEE_PLAYER/PLAYER_BEAT_2.mp3

Now you go out and try it for yourself children !

"This album is by far the greatest piece of writing, arranging, producing, and sequencing genius I've ever encountered. Anyone who has heard the first two Swamp Dogg albums will possibly say impossible, but after listening to this one will make the cross-over to incredible. The only album that may possibly compare with this one is the one that I'm contemplating doing the late future. Everything that is neccessary to make an album I have; Ego, talent, originality, humor, and I am dynamic, articulate, defiant, altruistic, considerate, warm, wonderful, & humble... I have also been a Grammy nominee for the past two years. I'm also a Cancer (July 12) and twenty nine years in the world. What you've just read is my trip, and if you can't tolerate it, that's your trip."

But as a producer, I just had to show it ain't that hard

This doesn't mean "Players" ain't impressive, but as most people on this thread, I think what JayDee did with the "Clair" sample is more innovative/impressive than the way he made the actual drumbeat.

To me (and I guess most people who've been producing or listening to hiphop longer than 8-10 years) sampling the classic drumbreaks is no longer fun, so you kinda develop a sixth sense for those 100 milliseconds where a kick or hihat is clean/open.

No shit!!! Me too. The drum shit is nice, but the loop is what got me.

Kyle

"Yo...on The Amen, Corner I stood, lookin at my former hood. Felt the spirit in the wind, knew my friend was gone for good. Threw dirt on the casket, the hurt, I couldn't mask it
Mixin down emotions, struggle I hadn't mastered. I coreograph seven steps to heaven. And hell, waiting to exhale and make the bread leavened. Veteran of a cold war It's Chica-I-go for. What I know or, what's known. So some days I take the bus home, just to touch home. From the crib I spend months gone. Sat by the window with a clutched dome listenin' to shorties cuss long. Young girls with weak minds, but they butt strong. Tried to call, or at least beep the Lord, but didn't have a touch-tone
It's a dog-eat-dog world, you gotta mush on. Some of this land I must own
Outta the city, they want us gone Tearin' down the 'jects creatin plush homes. My circumstance is between Cabrini and Love Jones. Surrounded by hate, yet I love home. Ask my God how he thought travellin the world sound Found it hard to imagine he hadn't been past downtown. It's deep, I heard the city breathe in its sleep. Of reality I touch, but for me it's hard to keep. Deep, I heard my man breathe in his sleep. Of reality I touch, but for me it's hard to keep"--Common

as nasty as it is, I cant call it one of the top5 creative beats or whatever it is u called it. but im no jay dee hater. I just think he needs to get some undeniable classics/bangers under his belt before he can claim best ever.

Drums aren't that hard to jack. It's quite easy with enough practice to jack a hi-hat from a haystack of nonsense around it.

The funny shit is when you're trying to jack some drums and you can tell the producer is making an obvious effort to prevent people from doing just that. Primo did a good job of covering his shit for a while on Royalty....I was like "fuck" then he gives you that little break in the eye of the storm for the bassdrum, hihat, and snare.

For real, I got all excited when quest first mentioned this only to play the record and hear some very clean samples. I'm as big a Jay-Dee fan (supporter, whatever) as the next but Players was the one track that I gotta admit not feeling that much. I dunno...just didn't sit right...

Of reality I touch, but for me it's hard to keep"--Common

...thinking when I read ?uest's post that one could definitely get at least a kick and a clap from Rapper's Delight.
