"I'm not trying to hate"

but there is a certain group of artists that have a certain affinity towards a certain style. A lot of them guest appear on each other's lp's.

But there is one group that is a member of this larger group that doesn't stylistically fit with the other say 4 or 5 artists in said umbrella organization.

How did this happen?

who i think we are talking about even though i'm not sure because no one is saying who they are then i as well am interested in knowing how they came to be among the other artists regardless of how they sound. Since i cant really recall when they would have bumped into them.

for a place that seems to be very family oriented to have a group from the other side that seems to have already been down with a group of otherside artists has always struck me as a bit odd. Esp. considering how they were left off the family's big treak across the nation.

but me thinks that they saw the advantages of getting under the umbrella in terms of getting exposure and said what the hell. B/c the recent vocal collab was not as hot as i would have expected. *shrug*

man speaking without actually saying anything is fun as hell.

gotta figure that number is pretty much not including lesson heads, GDers and lurkers. i'm still trying to figure out how much sway this site has in terms of sales. i'm betting alot considering how many copped Philly Expt.

but anyway I can personally attest that i would never have bought the first one if it wasnt for this site, and i was strictly a news only player then.

sounds like OutKast... with respect to either of the above groups but the term "umbrella organization" suggests an official binding... so it definately seems that he's talkin about how OutKast are not only outcasts in hiphop but outcasts creatively in the Doungeon Family also.

I always liked the four alarm blaze tune but I thought Jay-Z is kinda too calm and collected to sound right with MOP. As long as he doesnt make em do a duet with Rell and Amil.....

fame to jay: who is that smiling, dancing mu'fucka in the background?
jay: dont mind him. its just dame dash.

the group doesn't even share the label which most of the group seems to share right now... as troublesome as that label is

i'm still grappling with my feelings about the latest effort... there are some great joints on there (let's see if I can do this without naming names )

there's that one about money... i like that one
the beat on that track that has a newspaper/journalist theme is *sick*
and that track that shares the same name as a roots jam off illadelph is also really tight

but i don't think i'm really feeling it overall... better than their first, but they still got some ways to go...

1st album didnt have amped up beats, it was rather chill.

this one is intense and hopefully it will carry over into their live show.

now they just need some more hooks. honestly i would have rather seen them do a track with the sisters of the family instead of the big brother or would it be uncle? i think they would have lent a nice vibe to a track.

either way i got my money's worth

said group is fine for what they do. Others in that same category might be better or worse. I'm sure on occassion I've enjoyed a single or two.

But the ? remainz,
How did they hook up with the platoon that they roll with?

Were you to ask my truthfully, about other members of that squad, I'd say with 1 or 2 exceptions, they are as listenable as the group in question. So it's not about me liking or disliking the artists in question.

But how did 2 seemingly different schools of thought come together.

this is confusing. If this is the PEOPLES I think it is then I gotta say I cant really listen to them. I think theyre just nice guys and thats why they got such great connections and people in their corner. Either that or fantastic management.

As for this particular TEAM, their rhymes have good intentions but they sound like theyre trying way too hard. Good solid beats without a doubt and the scratching is ill but damn, the flows sound constipated to me. Dont even sound like theyre enjoying themselves so why should I?

Thats one problem with all these groups acting like theyre on some save hip hop shit - hip hop does not need you! well no, it probably does but it doesnt need to be reminded of it all the time. Its like if someone is feeling down about something, you dont wanna be reminded of why your down and your situation every five minutes. This is not a more serious than thou contest. Actions speak louder than words. Dont say what you gonna do, just do it.

but yeah, i'd like to know who met who, how everything happened... ?uest?

In response to Reply # 48

i think the west coast thing is the answer.

actually, i see parallels b/t mystery group and the head group with instruments. battle focused music w/o much in the way of themes, particularly the platform that fell apart incidents...um...albums.

the mystery group has a central position in their region among fans who also would like the head group of subterrean individuals. overlapping fanbases with different geographical location and they SHOULD have been on the west coast dates of the great web site tour.

but then again, the sisters in the fam should have opened up for the male supermodel in the crew when he did his big tour. eh. shrug.

It was answered on the first "subway" album. The two groups met while overseas touring. I'm sure a mutual respect for the artists grew from those meetings.

As Alek so peotically stated, the two groups aren't really all that different. The promote the same fundamental ideals.

...well, I won't actually, but here goes (in "which of these things is not like the other" code language).

On the east, you've got the family: apples, oranges, and bananas.

On the west, cucumber.

On the West Coast, the group the cucumber represents hiphop fundamentals. When I would go to concerts in 99-00, and the MC would say "Do y'all like REAL Hip Hop?!!" everyone would scream "Cucumber!" If anyone said "that UNDERGROUND SHIT!" people said "cucumber style, motherfucker." It's like a cult.

In other words, basically the same atmosphere as they had in the east-coast fruit family. No, it's not quite the same sound...However, I don't know about you, but I get tired of eating fruit ALL the time. So the fruit family looks around for foods with the same characteristics...committment, ingenuity, consistency, craft...

...and that's how it happened. I'm glad it happened that way, too, because cucumber is one of my favorite fruits (yup, it's a fruit, seed carrier with seeds on the inside) and sometimes nothing hits the spot quite like it.

...read my post.

On one hand, you've got your huge supermarket franchises like SafeJam, and they want to sell the big profit staples...red delicious apples, big yellow bananas, strawberries, etc.

Then there's the worker-owned collective that puts sweet plantains and loquats and Carribbean breadfruit in all these mixed-up crazy barrels...make-your-own-flavor style. You the Defway owner and he'll say..."Try some nice canned fruit cocktail! You'll love it, and there's always more where that came from!"

Meanwhile Al (the) Green grocer at Rawcooks cooperative is saying "Try a breaded tomato slice with pear chutney...you'll only find it here."

Okay, I got off track. But my point is, the visionaries can reconceptualize cuisine and the palate. They can experiment and draw surprising and rewarding connections.

but in this case its like Al serving up all the standard fare for a long time, almost the entire time he has been working. Its all quality fruit, hardly a worm to be found, but its still just fruit

and then suddenly one day Al throws the cucumber up on the menu(which one was who with the tomato and chutney?) without ever really giving an indication that he was such a wordly chef.

So as a loyal customer to Al's store i've got to ask "Yo Al what is this green thing, it tastes real good but where did the hell it come from?"

I mean did Al just decided it was time for a change, did Al realize that he had a lot of cucumber lovers among his customers that were only coming to his store for the fruit b/c they couldnt get their cukes(as my mom would say) or did the national cucumber distributor tell Al they would make it worth hi$ while to offer them in the store?

btw did you make up those store names or are they Cali fare?

okay, fine. I mean, I hardly think your hard "core" (heh) fundamental fruit like granny smith apples is the same as the lush, curvy, potassium-rich banana. And what about the high-intensity orange, with so much Vitamin C you're almost *conscious* of it. Or the groundbreaking color "revolution" of the orange-red-yellow peach?

Rawcooks....you get even more praise in my book of clever people than you normaly do for that one.

but now onto the comments:
"To which Al responds: "Actually, Joe, the cucumber is just another type of fruit. We're still a fruit store, but go out on a limb a little and try something different. I'm a real fruit merchant, so I'm changing up the fruit game. You grandiose motherfuckers keep asking me to give you what you want, but it's my job to give you what you NEED." "

but let's bring this back to how it actually goes down in the store.

When i walk in is it Al who is telling me the wonders of the cucumber or is it Annie and Burt K. telling me how tasty the cucumber is? Maybe the first day Al was going on about the yummy treat but what about since then. Seems to me Al went right on back comparing his eggplants to the ones that are a little darker purple or how he knows we used to dig the old Granny Smith apples but this new strain is really good too.

Really the only words i hear in the store about the cucumber were coming from his help. And while i still love those guys and respect their opinions it still seems that Al's heart really isnt into the cucumber. I mean if it was wouldnt he have put it in the front window display instead of those bananas fresh from the village they call D?

>When i walk in is it

>the wonders of the cucumber
>or is it Annie and
>Burt K. telling me how
>tasty the cucumber is?

...yeah. Well, honestly, I wasn't really paying close enough attention to the inner workings of the fruit store at the time.
You're right, though. Al tends to talk a whole lot about his apples and oranges, and he certainly seems to connect to them.

But...and now I'm going further out on a limb, I think Al sees more ways of preparing those familiar fruits...and I think those fruits entered the store in a very particular ripening stage.
The cucumber is set already. It knows what it tastes like and knows where it's headed.

You're right, though. There's definitely some incongruity.

>it still seems
>that Al's heart really isnt
>into the cucumber. I mean
>if it was wouldnt he
>have put it in the
>front window display instead of
>those bananas fresh from the
>village they call D?

Good point. I think it might be a somewhat tenuous supply contract. I guess my point is...I think cucumbers BELONG in Al's store, but it's not clear that Al or the cucumbers really believe that.

although with Al's customers, i think a big problem was that Al was kind of like "hey guys check out my newest offering, cucumber!" and everyone was like "great more fruit" and they wound up with something that had characteristics of the fruit but a taste that was foreign.

but tastes change and if you prepare the cucumber just right(although i would have used strawberries instead of Al's steady choice of melon) then the cucumber is a very nice meal.

and now if youll excuse me i need to go eat a hamburger

if the organix grocers really want to expand their customer base, then why not reach out to someone slightly more established whose fruit has already been proven to be tasty from that same geographical region. Not some group whose product is still in the testing stage of fertilisers and soil and whatnot. I heard the climate and conditions can make for some truly wondrous growth.

When I see the grocery truck pull, other members of the melon family were right there with the cantaloupes.

But when I go to the store, the other melons are on sale, while the cucumbers get the choice position.

Is this the cucumber industry paying off the grocer to try and move more cucumbers? And by putting it in the fruit section as opposed to the vegetable section, they seem to be confusing consumers.

I for one, am glad that i'm a carnivore.

acually I would think the Mostard supplier has decided to postpone a resupply of Al's store to tinker with his business model. he had some serious critical success in the fruit aisle but had successes over in the bakery as well, his rockn'roll was fairly acclaimed and now he wants to bake.
basically, he's getting too big to just be in Al's store. He wants his own boutique. he also opened a video rental section in his new spot and has gotten enough response to think about making it a full time part of his business. (apparently he started there and may long to return to it).
he's trying to prove he can be the millenial salsa. the hot, new condiment that you can put on anything. i hope he pride doesn't keep him grom giving Al a call if his store flops.

i think the overlooked fruit was one that showed some spark but turned out to be much too 'raw' to be digestable but Al's most devoted customers.

some nice greens outside the COUP
a MYSTIC arrangement of cherries

that would have been nice, even if it was just a one month sale.

maybe good old Al will decide to build the store into something that is really pulling together all the quality fruit AND vegetables that are on the market today. building himself quite a nice reputation as the nations leading fruit store maybe one day making him so popular he could cut the industrial farms and distributors loose?

of course i think Al's focus is to get the name out to everyone and not so much be independent. Its a shame.

>there are other western fruit out

>some deLICIOUS BLACK berries

eh...I love blackberries, a LOT. But even I get a little tired of them after a while. There's distinctive, but they're a little overpowering. Also, they're inconsistent. Sometimes terrific, sometimes blah, sometimes definitely unripe.

Cucumber is solid, substantial, and you can contentedly put it on your salad plate every day for years.

>some nice greens outside the COUP

Yeah, but do you really want greens that flourished some time in the mid-nineties? Not to say that they can't still be good, but their time is slightly past.

>a MYSTIC arrangement of cherries

Yes...though the cherries are sometimes REALLY lacking in flavor.

I'd prefer a BLOWD ried pear assortment, some nATUral grains, or some rASIAns.
