intriguing...thanks for the link..

it seems every white mc in the public realm is either deranged, suffering some psycho episode (eminem, cage, necro), a hick red neck mc from the haystacks (bubba sparx, this dude in the article), or one with huge identity issues (vanilla ice, mc serch)....of course there are exceptions (evidence, everlast), but very very few in commerical hip hop....

there are many many white mc's who don't fit that criteria..many who actually deal with white issues and uplifting the white community in America, which needs help as well...

the problem is...when a white mc addresses the issue of his own race/culture/heritage...he's not appreciated/respected/or popular often cause it's not 'shocking'....

doesn't say too much about mainstream popular culture

I think it has something to do with being "real." If a white cat in a business suit who is middle-class had the illest skills in the world, he probably wouldn't sell three records. Part of that probably comes from the fact that we just assume that white=privilege (or, most people do). But give consumers a white dude who says he grew up on the streets and happens to have some skills on the mic, and you have yourself a platinum artist.

I think the only reason some are more popular than others is because some people pull off the whole poor=credible thing a lot better than others. Everlast is not as good at it as Eminem is (nor is he as gritty or lyrically talented). And the list of comparisons goes on. Who would win between Bubba Sparxxx and Eminem in terms of credibility, I wonder?

Nevertheless, it's an interesting discussion.

For real. Really, if Eminem was white, he would just be another Canibus (with better production). His albums are weak if you ask me, and i dont think his great skill is being used all that well. i dont know, just somethin about him rubs me the wrong way, and i heard him before i knew about the color thing.

Even idiots who don't know hip-hop acknowledge Timbaland's talents.

He's kinda right, but the opening of his article cements the fact that he is predisposed to a cynically anti-hip-hop view (Jay "unmusical"? Discussion of lyrical skills "doggeral"?), thus making anything else he has to say decidedly biased.

That was the most racist piece of trashy misinformation I have read in awhile. I'm going to write the editor but where do you start? You can't have a discussion with someone who believes this kind of swill or even writes it for shock value.

I would understand if the guy flat-out didn't like hip-hop but was able to maintain his objectivity. He seemed to have some type of ear for music, but his underlying (actually, they were pretty blatant) perceptions of race, & class totally devalue anything he says.

I have never heard of that website before. Is this standard fare?

U don't get any street cred in hip-hop, unless u had a dysfunctional family and lived in the hood, White boys are just flippin' da script. It's more believable and grimier, if they are from the trailer park, all gimmicks.

perfect example: Eminem is shooting a movie in his hometown (somewhere in Detroit, I think). They brought trash into the trailer park to make it look dirtier than it is in the movie, presumably so he could keep up the image of being grimy.

People want to listen to someone they can identify with and there are all these kids who know nothing of the culture, and u just named ALL their fav emcees. white emcees are the most popular, loved, and regaurded in the midwest. shit gets disgusting. so please don't worry about the white emcee cause they get the same treatment in hip hop as they do in real life.

they're still not popular, on a level with Jay-z, Ja Rule, or Nelly. They're not household names like DMX or P.Diddy. Pretty much the only "conscious" rappers who are really popular like that are Outkast. Plus, I'm really sick of the term "conscious" anyway, I think it gets thrown around a lot without really being defined. But basically, the point I was trying to make was that the kind of rap that gets called "conscious", doesn't have as much mass appeal, 'cause most fans don't wanna take the time to decipher messages within lyrics, and therefore "conscious" MCs, whether black or white, just aren't as popular. It's a lot easier to just say "EI, EI, Uh Oh", than it is to wonder "hmm...who is this Assata person?"

* mis·ceg·e·na·tion Mid-19th century. Coined from Latin miscere "to mix" + genus "race" + -ation.

* 1. sexual relations between races: sexual relations between people of different races, especially of different skin colors, leading to the birth of children

* 2. intermarriage between races: marriage or cohabitation between people of different races

It's a hateful term, but it somewhat caused me to be mildly amused when used to refer to Britney Spears. She's far from what anyone would call "miscegenated". But when this angry, presumably white male thinks of her and her "hip-hop" dance moves and R&B/Soul tinged singing (tongue firmly in cheek), he automatically considers her to be the product of interracial mingling.

it's an extremely potent term, heavily loaded from cultural, literary, political, etc. standpoints, but hateful? depends on the intentions of the speaker. i use it all the time (i.e. 10 or more times a week) in literary discussion. it's not hateful, just powerful and somewhat heavy.

To all those who are going into a discussion over how certain white MC's have credibility and others don't, I think you're missing the main point here. The point is that this tripe the guy wrote is some of the most offensively elitist, classist, racist shit written in a modern publication-and it starts from the first line. I don't care about the white MC discussion he might have sparked among some of you, I'm more concerned with the fact that the Voice would even publish something with this much race-baiting and hatred in today's society. I don't remember exactly what he said midway through, just for example, where he talks about black culture only being civilized when it's cleaned up through the white man's filter?!?!? And he was referring to the Neo-Swing Movement?!?!? I mean, this guy is so racist he can't even see the forest through the trees and he probably feels he has some mission to protect his priveleged, white male culture like it's the Holy Grail. He actually makes use of the archaic "White Man's Burden" philosophy but because he says that it is now to love themselves it's supposed to be new and fresh, somehow not racist anymore?!? Fuck him and his burden I'd like to put my foot in his pompous, self-righteous, bigoted ass.

That's true...the main point is that the article was written and published in the first place. But the Voice likes to publish controversial stuff, and this fits the bill.

I'm concerned about it, too. But the reason I posted the link here is because this type of ignorance comes from a lack of general dialogue. Why did he think it was okay to write this? How many people looked at this piece of shit before it was published? I care about the white MC discussion because I care about the future of hip-hop...and it seems like there are more to come. I haven't decided if I'm comfortable or uncomfortable with the phenomenon (I like good music. Period. Race aside.) but I'd rather hear what other people think before I go off on a tirade about hatred.

I don't agree with everything printed in the Village Voice, he obviously doesn't know anything about the hip-hop culture or Black culture, so why should I care about him? Am I supposed to be upset, becuz this guy, doesn't embrace hip-hop? Would we all feel betta if put up some pretense of being "PC" and "hip"? He has the right to think what he wants (no matter how ignorant or close-minded) and any type of "protest" against this man, gives him more notoriety than he deserves. I do agree with the point he's making, White boys with shock value and top producers will shine.

Damn. I didn't think I would read something this racist in the Voice. Anyway, beyond the fact that Mr. Couch is obviously racist, the article has a variety of serious factual errors, especially when he decides to widen his criticism into other genres of music.
Country music, much like rock music is a result of the mixing of African American and white influences. If you read anything by its originators, or people who study this for a living, you will find that to be true. The pop trend in country music may have increased its sales, but at the expense of the quality of the music, a trend that exists in every genre of music.
Rock music is at its best when it incorporates, and respects the influence of black music (much of the work of Dylan, Beatles, etc.)
The artists in these fields have more knowledge and respect of our music than the fans do, which informs the complexity and quality of their work. The current trend towards "rock rap" is not based on this trend, but a marketing gimmick, featuring groups that cannot play instruments or spit get away with doing both to a hybrid audience.
However, I find many of his arguments to be uncomfortably close to the arguments that I would find on this very website. The idea that a music artist has any kind of responsibility to "elevate" anyone, especially a race, is just as ignorant as the age old justification for gangsta rap that it is the "CNN" of the ghetto.
In addition, we (as the producers and fans of hiphop music) have been lazy in refusing to criticize "artists" who are not truly creative in any sense. There are a large number of mc's and producers who don't put any effort into what they do on any level. Even though the majority of the examples the writer gave indicate a rudimentary familiarity with the music, some of them were uncomfortably close to the truth. We all know that the simplistic production of Swiss Beatz is not good, but as a group we proclaim that it's hot if it can convince drunken people to dance. And if anybody criticizes that, then they are haters.
The truth is that there is a lot of opportunism in hiphop, because it is the only musical art form in which the fans can easily become the artist. I know that it's all about money (Quest seems to say this in every post now) but people who just want an easy paycheck are starting to water the game down.

It is good to have friends, even in hell.-Tommy

27. "SATIRE"
In response to Reply # 0

I really think this is supposed to be satirical. It's obviously not well done, because nobody caught it, and I had to go back and re-read it because it seemed out of place at the Voice. Here are a few things that gave it away to me. I think he is trying to say that white rappers are watering down, commoditizing and weakening hip hop. A few quotes...

1)"In the past, mainstream culture refined raw black cultural materials, resulting in musical zeniths such as the recent neo-swing movement, which briefly presented a viable outlet for young dancers unwilling to subject themselves to the degrading influence of rap and rave music." recent musical zeniths as the recent neo-swing movement? gotta be a joke.

2)The closer: "Instead of glorifying the worst in us, white artists, Northern and Southern, should magnify the best in us (see Sudhalter's excellent "The White Contribution to Jazz")." also has to be a joke.

Moreover, why would somebody who hates hip hop learn enough about it to know terms like "skills," "flavors," and "beats." He's lampooning the person who would write the article while criticizing the albums.

Again.. it seems like a pretty poorly carried out satire, but I'm pretty sure that it is.

and i thought so from the first paragraph, but satire needs to expose itself through some sense of absurdity or through the adherence to a certain form (e.g. parody). this article isn't really satirical, it just fails to make any sense. i wouldn't say this article is hateful and written by a hateful or ignorant person. i'd say it's an attempt at satire by an embarassingly incompetent and sophomoric writer.

The tone of the article is pretty matter-of-fact, and I'm not quite sure what exactly he's poking fun of if it is indeed satirical.

And the fact that everybody here is planning a letter-writing campaign is the exact response that this guy (or girl) is aiming for... Seriously though, some people let P.C.-mania cloud their judgment... a few passages that can be intrepreted as anti-black and now it's time to get the writer fired. Come off that.

First of all, the author's name is clearly a pseudonym. I've been reading the Voice Music reviews for a long time now and I've never seen the name "N. Bedford Couch." Hmmm... bed.. for... couch?

And the two examples the previous poster mentioned are DING DING DING signs of satirical content.

Also, the fact that the writer appears to be unversed in Hip-Hop -- putting the words "beats" "skills" and "flavor" in quotes throughout the article -- but can turn around and name drop semi-obscure artists like Eightball, Mannie Fresh and Trick Daddy shows that the guy is obviously being facetious and is trying to pull the reader's chain... which seems to have worked.

And the overuse of SAT words is another clear sign that the dude is not serious.

I mean, look at some of the passages. "...instead of using immersion in this dark world to the advantage of his bretheren, he uses it in an ill-advised excerise in white self-flagellation." C'mon now.

Most journalists, good or bad, like to receive letters and responses to their work. But hate mail? Nah -- and that's exactly what this "article" would attract.

Seriously though, some

I don't think the writer should be fired. I just want to the Voice to run a clarification, if indeed this piece is satirical (which I don't believe it is) or explain what they were trying to achieve with this ridiculousness.

You've offered a strong argument. But I'm not really as concerned with whether the article is satirical or not as I am with the fact that it appeared in the Voice in the first place. The presence of this piece of garbage in one of my favorite publications has made me reconsider why I ever liked the Voice in the first place.

There is no way that a person that hates rap and thinks that black dominance of culture is a tragic thing would ever find 8ball to be "skilled", I know elitist northern blacks that dont even find 8ball to be skilled. This was written under a fake name. Instead of trying to write the Voice, which is actually a very good publication, try writing a mag like the source who has forced crap like on us like Benzino and giving Def Jam artist covers jus cuz they have an album coming out.

From the other deleted post on this:

I was worried about this as soon as I read the article. I called my man at the Voice and he said they've already been getting all kinds of calls. Its sad b/c I really think of both the Voice's readership and the Okayplayer boards as being communities of relative intelligence...is satire dead? This is clearly not serious, for those who don't know, the Voice is essentially a hippie paper and one of the few large circulation papers that actually gives some shine to unsuccessful hip-hop artists, MF Doom, Company Flow, Saul Williams, etc...Lighten up people, "I thought this was America" (C) Jayhova

and as soon as all of you realize that there are people who this guy represents, the better off we will all be. Realizing that this guy means every word he says would bring us all FURTHER along in racial relations. Too many people want to be politically correct now days and avoid the real hate and jealousy that lives within everybody.

Just looking at the reactions of our players here should give an indication on how the races are divided. The white players say he must be joking and that it should be dismissed. The black players want to kick his ass or start a letter campaign.

This article was obviously meant to create a reaction. Time to take a look at your initial reactions and yourselves players.

from my friend who works for the Village Voice:

"apparently, it's a paradoy. the writer's actually some guy named tony, who's 40 and black. there's an ACTUAL mr. couch who writes hip hop reviews from a black conservative standpoint, and tony thought it'd be clever to write a review of white rappers from a white conservative perspective. i don't think the music editors stopped to think about this. also, a lot of the friends of the music department writers have been saying they'll never read the voice again. some joke, huh? i was discussing it with the music intern. he thought because it was a joke, it couldn't be offensive. you know: standard white liberal back lash."

his idea was a good one. how many scathing reviews of artists like jay-z and the hot boyz have lambasted them for being intelligence-devoid purveyors of filth whose only notable impact on humanity is the destruction of black culture? however, the author could have executed the concept in a way that made it more clear to the reader that he was being ironic rather than purposefully offensive.

the neo-swing movement of the late 90's was definitely the cultural nadir of eurocentric humanity. black people, though rhythmatically inclined, lack the grace and posture to truly understand the beauty of "swinging" -- the apex of all civilization. neanderthals, rejoice.

by the way, methinks the alias of bedford couch is a dig at stanley crouch.

Until you get Neo-Nazi emcees, I don't think "self-hating hick" would be an appropiate term. It's not like Haystak and Bubba are on White Man's Burden Records.

I respect some dirty, backwood hillbilly emcees more than a suburban, backpack-sportin', skateboard-toting so-called emcee who didn't listen to hip hop until Fred Durst did his thing with Method Man, then wants to give you the discography of the Beastie Boys.
