""Manufactured" artists that did not make it "

Many of us always talk about the "manufactured" stars out there who become major artists and even icons. The ones mentioned are usually women, which is another topic, but those such as Madonna, Rihanna, Beyonce, even Aaliyah and Ashanti.

As much as we talk about them as if it discredits their talent...we know that there are a thousand other artists who were given the same type of mold and didn't succeed for other reasons.

Who are some of these artists that you can think of who were almost "add water and stir" and should have made some impact, but failed? It can be R&B, Pop, Rock, or Rap.

It's probably one of the few times I can say this; her being white was a disadvantage.

Her album was just a dash too r&b for a period where pop scarlets were keeping not r&b outside of the first single, lol.

just last week I was at the gym and a new(er) video of hers was on one of the TVs and I was thinking to myself "shit, I forgot she existed". Cause I remember back in like 06 or 07 my guilty pleasure was that I loved her track "Too Little Too Late" and thought that she was gonna be something pretty decent ---- and then I literally never heard a thing from her or about her again until just last week at the gym.

To me Big Sean. I guess he has a lane but I dont see him being around long.

Pusha T ....Kanye gave him and Sean spot in the light...not sure how long or if they will be relevant a year from now..I know Pusha has Clipse fame to fall back on though...

there are/were lots of acts who were a label's answer to ____'s popularity through similar sound/image/packing & presentation.

for example, MYRON, was an oft, if not totally forgotten act (by anyone under 35) that was island records answer to d'angelo/maxwell/raphael saadiq.

and remember all those kid rap groups from 91/92?
da youngstaz, illegal, mobb deep, etc.
they were various labels cash-in on the success of kris-kross.
who, was jermaine durpi's cash-in on the success of michael bivens' group another bad creation.

da brat was jermaine dupri's answer to snoop dogg.
"funkdafied" was their answer to "nothin but a g thang"
and lil romeo was master p's answer to the success of lil bow wow.

choppa (not to be confused with the guy who works jos. a bank) was master p's very thinly-veiled answer to nelly.

j. cole was imo jay-z's answer to drake/charles hamilton (who still had priority with jimmy in those days).

foxy brown was def jam's answer to lil kim, who they luckily launched at exactly the same time kim herself was preparing her debut album, confusing the "who came first?" question to anyone not paying attention.

L was def jam's early answer to mc shan

chubb rock, dare i say was somebody at a label's answer to heavy d, despite being talented in his own right.

the beastie boys were a white cash-in on run-dmc's sound a la new edition -> new kids on the block.

ditto for public enemy -> 3rd base.

nwa had enough differences to avoid comparisons but they were obviously inspired by the beastie boys & public enemy.
this is especially apparent if you've ever heard any old dr. dre mixtapes or ice cube's group C.I.A.

i mean i could keep going ("oh my god keep going!!" © just blaze) but the bigger issue is simple cause & effect in music/the music industry.
and the attempt to calculate and minimize risk on... art. lol.
but usually when something makes an impact and succeeds to some degree there will be cash-ins, other label's "answer" to the popularity.
in the 00's mainstream rap music was almost exclusively made up of that sonically because of how lucrative it had become after the late 90's.

Shit, I remember the name and that's it.

I don't even remember those rip off groups LOL...was this Mobb Deep different from Prodigy and Havoc?? I assume so

>da brat was jermaine dupri's answer to snoop dogg.
>"funkdafied" was their answer to "nothin but a g thang"
>and lil romeo was master p's answer to the success of lil bow
>wow.

Yep Romeo was a direct response, even though I feel he would have come out anyway. Master P did have a group "Lil soldiers" the year before Bow Wow dropped. And Brat was a female Snoop, dope as hell tho

>choppa (not to be confused with the guy who works jos. a bank)
>was master p's very thinly-veiled answer to nelly.

Hmm you think so? Thing that's interesting is that people say Nelly stole that New Orleans bounce singing style, and Choppa was actually from New Orleans, so a lot of folks felt he was more authentic.

>j. cole was imo jay-z's answer to drake/charles hamilton (who
>still had priority with jimmy in those days).

Hmm possibly so

>foxy brown was def jam's answer to lil kim, who they luckily
>launched at exactly the same time kim herself was preparing

Crazy to think, and I didn't realize sales were SO close til an article a few months ago that talked about their rivalry and Nicki. They were basically even.

>L was def jam's early answer to mc shan

WTF, never knew that

>chubb rock, dare i say was somebody at a label's answer to
>heavy d, despite being talented in his own right.

Wow, aside from the name, I can definitely see the similarity.

>the beastie boys were a white cash-in on run-dmc's sound a la

Hmm, possibly so yeah.

Never thought about that

NWA was together right when PE became big, right? I know the CIA music sounded a LOOOT like NWA, especially how Cube was rapping, talkin about "the girlies" n that

I'd also add Miracle who I felt was a DIRECT response to Mystikal and Drama.

It is referring to their Juvenile Hell album, before they found their lane with the Infamous. Even though you could hear the potential, they were just thrown in with a bunch of dope producers that probably just mailed in beats for them.

I don't know if they necessarily fit the topic of the post, but yea, both those girls just need hits to sing & they'd be there. only problem is Mya's 32, Milian's 30 & Rihanna's only 24. it may not sound like much, but Rihanna gets that 16-25 "I'm an independent woman" x ratchet girls crowd

I'd argue that Mya made it. Well, to a point. She was doing really well for herself, and then she kind of disappeared. She came out when R&B and pop weren't so intertwined, but it isn't like ol' girl didn't have a few albums that did pretty well.

and then remember death row's comeback strategy circa 1998/1999?
knock-offs of their biggest rappers in top dogg and the realest?
what a business man suge knight was... lol.
he seemed determined to single-handedly kill off their massive white dollar market share as quickly as he could.
did you know the chronic 2000 went PLATINUM? lol.

the bigger picture though...

suge knight represents the chronic 2000 sold over a million copies.
like put that into perspective, the biggest rap album today barely scraps over 1.0-1.5.
suge knight, with a roster of nobodies and knock-offs of his own former successes sold a million fucking records with no single in rotation.

definitely "different" times.
how many of their pre-established white fanbase do you think bought that album and then never bought another death row or even another rap album ever again?

Yea I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that there was a lot of noise on the internet and stuff about how Dre had to change the title of his album cause of Suge and Death Row...and also just the Death Row name which still resonated in the industry to a certain degree. But you're right - crazy that it sold like it did regardless, especially considering what you said about the label being a bunch of no names/wanna-be's and shit like that.

it had NO single in national video/radio rotation either.
it sold purely on the reputation of the name of the chronic/death row.
that album should be listed in chapter 1 of how to kill your fanbase off in as few moves as possible.

And I'm not the type who likes that hybrid style. Just give me straight Soul/R&B, or straight Rock, or shit straight Blue grass. But all at once is too much. "Say you'll go" is greatness, and "Neon Valley Street" is pretty dope. But a lot of her songs did too much to hit me.

Could be that eclectic/hipster vibe she tends to portray through her image. Just doesn't seem honest, like does she behave like that in real life!?!

47. "This is Barbara Randolph:"
In response to Reply # 37
Sun May-13-12 02:29 PM by b.Touch

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Randolph

She was an actress (best known for a bit part as the assistant maid in "Guest Who's Coming to Dinner?") and a singer. She spent most of her career as a fill-in or replacement for other artists in group acts: she replaced Zola Taylor in The Platters, and was signed to Motown to replace Diana Ross in The Supremes in 1966.

When Berry Gordy decided to keep Ross in the group a while longer (she was finally pulled out in 1969), the plan then shifted to possibly hiring Randolph to replace Flo Ballard. Ross didn't like Randolph, so they snatched Cindy Birdsong from Patti LaBelle & the Blue-Belles instead.

Now technically without a purpose for being singed to Motown (a solo female singer on Motown in that era was more or less ignored as far as development and getting good records went in favor of Diana Ross - Martha Reeves and Gladys Knight will tell you that), Randolph briefly subbed for Tammi Terrell on the road with Marvin Gaye after Terrell fell ill. She recorded a few sides for Motown's Soul label (both A-sides were covers of stock H-D-H tunes: "I Got a Feeling" and "Can I Get a Witness") and faded into obscurity. This is her version of "I Got a Feeling", which I prefer to the Four Tops' hit version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RV_cs-T2Y-Q&feature=topics

More random trivia: her adoptive mother is Lillian Randolph, a radio/film actress from the 1940s probably best infamously remembered today as the voice of the black maid in the "Tom & Jerry " cartoons.

Missy Elliott mode.

Missy actually has a long line of artists she's run through (heh)where she's writing and producing most/all of their material, they're signed to her label, and pay a lot of dues singing backup on her albums. Granted, a lot of these girls were talented, but they didn't have their own sound or style. They had Missy's.

Tweet and Jazmine Sullivan are the only two of the bunch with enough of their own style to not fall (all the way) into the Missy Elliott trap/curse.

I think it could still be Kendrick. The interesting thing is just that Dre played it lowkey.

2 things...

ALL stars are manufactured. Nothing goes from the womb to stardom. When you get into the major system you are refined until you are a perfect product. Might have a smash song but no image, might sing your ass off but no "story", might be an ok singer but have a star personality. All of the holes get filled in either by the label, a producer, a stylist, management etc.

with that said then.. most of the artists we never succeeded were probably manufactured in someway. Look at any labels books. They might have 1000 ppl signed and 4 blow up.

Women get the tag A LOT more because there is straight up more that goes into a woman's image than a male artist. Make-up, styling etc... Visually they will always be more manufactured

you could NOT tell me that Nicole Swhatshername was NOT gunning for that Rihanna position.

first time i met Jimmy Iovine at a 311 Show i to this day believe that he only came cause he was secretly "goomahing" Nicole S away from her then BF Nick (lead singer) whom we were opening for.

she travelled with the show for a bit so there was a crazy energy in the air that was already in effect. i mean PCD was just about to jump off the ground. but she was so ready for her closeup. actually quiet as its kept she has an *it* factor. even during like regular things like the 3am truck stop visit to Subway in bumblefuck america in her sweats she was prepping for her closeup.

so even during the time i was working with storch on Tipping id occasionally spot her and the machine was fittna go. like there was such a "remember this moment ahmir cause in about 12 years you'll be telling cats crazy stories of knowing her way "back when...."

i actually got frustrated when the machine couldn't quite take off.

sometimes it happens to the best of them.... label pres goes ALL OUT to make sure the machine works (see Matolla/Carey) and it just doesnt happen.

she is the FIRST person i think of when this subject comes up.

the direction they were going, to be those crossover "Black trendy crowd AND Top 40 crowd likes it" type songs, such as the one with T.I....but nothing ever took off for her.

Scherzinger definitely has a voice. She has the looks. But people will forever know her as a Pussycat Doll, and not a solo act, even though PCD as a "group" is essentially her.

Putting my Hawaiian pride into focus, look at Bruno Mars. He broke a lot of ground for pop music in Hawai'i, because it means someone who is him, with his ethnic background, with that face, can make it, even if he is a "Mars". Would he have made it as a Pete Hernandez? He would have made it, but not with the same level of impact? Where did Scherzinger go wrong? I think her people tried to cater her music to specific audiences, and failed. Bruno Mars actually pointed the finger at pop but said "I'm not afraid to show you what I can really do", and that generally goes against a lot of pop artists in Hawai'i. You're expected to make good music, cater to the tastes of your parents and grandparents, and be "safe". Mars has a sense of ballsiness I didn't sense at first, but now that he's in the position to take his career wherever HE wants, I feel he is in control. Scherzinger had those opportunities, but has yet to challenge them.

Yet.

I say "yet" because I truly want to give her a shot, have her be the one to be the "it" woman, the "aww shit" singer, but so far, not yet. The pessimistic person in me says it's not going to happen, that she has had the same level of success Yvonne Elliman had, and I compare her to Yvonne Elliman because of their shared Hawaiian heritage. It always seems when someone makes an attempt to step up to the plate, it goes away in five years. I wish Scherzinger had the same management team that Mars has, because if it was me, I'd be going for broke with her.

Here's how I feel. PCD was deliberately manufactured. Scherzinger is not, but her "role" was to be sexy within the product. The moment she tried to step out of the product, no one wanted her. People preferred the packaging over the item. Now the value of the item has weakened. She's a lead vocalist, but now has the integrity of a background vocalist. Yet I hear so many singers today that are neither, and yet are a success. Pisses me off every time the topic is brought up.

at least in that traditional sense; she just had the good luck for a video to go viral. Sure, they tried to make something out of what little talent she got, but that was luck through and through.

The point of this post are those artist that get the WHOLE team behind em from gate...millions wasted on promotion, songwriting, training..and flop.

not NOW after the reality show...

the FIRST time around on LaFace. pre-nose jobs.

i don't know if they are "manufactured" in the true sense of this post, but they were certainly given what should have been a good look/starting point coasting off of Toni's success.

and NOTHING popped off.

I think that there are many good people that did not make it. I think that some people should also go to the NBA. And that some stay in college.
