"yo..that tribe documentary was some bullshit...is there an unedited vers..."

where's the fights?
was that it?
i mean, shit, that was what all the controversy was about?
man lissen...
the insight was cool
but maybe i should retitle this post
to read, that the drama that was hyped up in the documentary
was some bullshit

your thoughts?

...a child is born with no state of mind, blind to the ways of mankind, god is smilin' on you and frownin' too, because only god knows what you gonna do...©melle mel

>* on MTV reading emails and what not..

Why didn't he just put his name on the production credits?
Why did he help Mobb Deep refine their sound?
Why did he bring Dilla into the fold?

Obviously dude is pretty quirky and particular, but can you call him selfish? The movie is great for the fans, but without all of his hard work and effort, there would be NO story to tell.

i was shocked at how much phife dropped the ball on all levels.
SPOILER ALERT

its kinda embarassing to think that you're signed to recording contract and you can't get your shit together, come to the studio on time, and eat right.
addicted to sugar?.....REALLY.
i see why dilla took over production duties...tip liked them joints better than his own.
i see why cons was added....to make up for phife's lack of input/output and still having the group vibe.
phife looked like a guy who was just along for the ride (even though he mattered a lot to the group). for a guy that probably has been on 5-6 continents, he still had a limited perspective on life

made to be more of a selling point than it actually is?

Did Tip fight to have the film boycotted as a publicity stunt?

From the alleged emails back and forth, he seemed genuinely pissed at how the doc turned out.

But in the end when it comes to the music, TIP always wanted it more. Way more. And I know how that feels, wanting it more than ur crew. It sucks.

It was just sad seeing two grown men not mature enough to be able to work around each others personalities. Folks you known since birth. They still haven't accepted each other for who they are. And that's all it takes really, even if u don't agree.

Was I the only one who thought Phife took Tip's, "Look alive, look at Phife Dawg" line outta context?

I thought he was directing it to the crowd on some, "If Phife can be up here sick and doin his thing, then y'all can get hype too."

Thoughts?

But it shows you just how much on edge the whole situation was. I've seen silly rap beefs start over similar miscommunication. And then add that to the stress of tour? Phonte, I know you know all the stress that comes with that, so you understand.
I believe Phife did sort of own up to it at the very end when he mentions that both him and Tip have made mistakes when it comes to their friendship.

The 'at' of course changes the entire context of the statement. I don't know Tip well at all, but I doubt he'd tell his man who's onstage suffering from diabetes and kidney failure to 'look alive.' Who really knows though....

ESPECIALLY since Phife's condition was the whole reason they went back on the road in the first place, from what I understand from the doc.

have done a better job of showing that side of him. Yeah they did tell us that Tip is a perfectionist, but could he really get on some gestapo shit like that? Phife did tell Tip that he was healthy enough to perform though, maybe that was a sticking point for Tip.

gone through something similar? I'm definitely sympathetic
towards his overall plight, but I can't grasp how Tip wronged
him. I do think that Tip may be hard to deal with, but I
don't understand what he specifically did wrong to Phife.

While I certainly want to know some backstories and info on ATCQ, I didn't want to remember one of my favorite groups as despising one another. Even though the actual controversy in the film was minimal, I definitely see why Tip bugged out over it. He's an artist and perfectionist to the end and would not be happy with an end result that didn't give home complete creative control to edit and re-edit and re-edit and re-edit til it was to his satisfaction.
At the end of the day, their interpersonal problems are par for the course when it comes to music groups.

Now I would love to see a documentary focused solely on the creative process of their most notable songs. My favorite parts of the film are Tip chopping up samples and Phife talking about how he wrote and recorded his famous verse on "Buggin Out".

Though the subject matter of the film definitely gives it an advantage in my book, I have to say that I was pretty underwhelmed by this documentary. And not just because of the seemingly unwarranted hype regarding the "controversy" prior to me seeing it.

I would have liked to learn more about the music. Like someone else said, the best parts of this film were when Tip was breaking down the samples of some of the beats, or when they were talking about their own lyrics and the MUSIC. And of course, the incredibly dope live footage.

Granted, I know that there's only a finite amount of time to tell a story that spans two decades, but this film didn't even address some of the issues that it raised itself, such as:

- Why WAS Prince Paul not included in the album cover for Midnight Marauders?
- What WAS the exact beef that Tribe had been having with Jive?
- Why DID Consequence so suddenly appear (and then disappear) from the ranks of the group?
- What WAS the dynamic like when Jay Dee entered the picture?

Granted, these are all things that most of the people who read this post will be able to infer or speculate on because we're all hip hop nerds and have talked about these very questions for years. I just found it weird that they would sort of raise these questions within the film and then do nothing to actually shed more light on them.

At the end of the film, I felt like I had even less of an idea as to why exactly Tip and Phife have so much unsettled business, but I can only say that it seems like both of them appear to be closed off in very different, conflicting ways. It seems like the general gist of their problems seem to stem from egos, exacerbated by poor communication. But again, it's not like the film did much to truly solidify any of those ideas.

I've watched it twice now, and while it's great to see 90 minutes of Tribe and their music, it just kind of rings hallow at the end. Like there wasn't much story told, and there wasn't much attention given to the actual music itself, so...it's a weird feeling. I can only hope that the DVD will come with a whole bunch of stuff that didn't make the cut, which would seem likely since in the credits more than half of the people who do drops weren't even featured in the film.

Seriously, if Tip was putting all his time into digging (while Phife was at the ball game), listening for loops, constructing the beats, AND writing rhymes......then yeah nigga, IT IS QTIP AND A TRIBE CALLED QUEST. For Tip to put in all that work and STILL have to twist Phife's arm just to get him into the studio to lay his verses....cmon son. How can He think Tip was being selfish ????? Fuck outta here. And I love Phife. Glad he got that kidney too.

I love ATCQ but Phife is mediocre to me. If he were to leave the group i wouldn't have missed him at all really but you take Tip from the group and you have a problem. Tip was the backbone of that group so nobody should be made at the credit and praise that came his way.

wise...phife is dean martin to tips sinatra...tip was obviously the frontman and focal point of the group but tip without the group was just tip which, although still dope, is a very different musical experience than the group as a whole. you couldnt replace phife because part of the magic was the nature of the relationships within the group...it was totally organic. you were watchin 2 best friends who happened to evolve musically into one of the illest groups as opposed to some random cats who decided to join up into a group and were kinda friends kinda associates (see LONS).phife could care less about tips ego bs or the group and tip knew that so that added an element (sometimes good, sometimes not) within their group dynamic. if you know anything about the rat pack it was the same with them...everybody else was on franks jock bein a yes man and wantin to hang out with him but dean didnt really give a shit about what frank was talkn about or partyin everynight because he was his own man and frank respected him for it, even tho it caused problems...same with these cats

i think you're giving Phife too much credit. He peaked at "Butter" and hasn't been dope since The Low End Theory LP. Tip was just carrying dead weight for the most part. Tip was just being a good friend helping his man get money when he really wasn't contributing much.

from what I could search...
Phife's line in "Jazz" "Strictly hardcore tracks/Not a new jack swing" got some ppl (teddy riley & his brother's associates) real heated...now
about the "Hot Sex" video...
"Wreckx N Effects' crew assaulted Q-Tip outside a Naughty By Nature/Run DMC concert in March 16th of '93 so badly that his vision was permanently damaged (he didn't need his now ubiquitious glasses before the attack). Another side effect is the "Hot Sex" video, where he donned the mask after preliminary test footage showed that makeup wasn't going to be able to hide the damage."

pulled Pos off a stage in the middle of his own show for a second before security eventually intervened & then later the misunderstanding got cleared up through their shared record company ties.

But please believe that De La Soul or their crew are not doing shit to Treach & those people he was running with, on a one-on-one fight level with any of the three of them or on an 'entourage' beef level.

Someone on this site was actually at this show & told the story here years back.

In response to Reply # 0

i knew this girl that had diabetes. teenager. saw her count her sugar and give herself shots. it was frustrating to watch, so i can only image how frustrating how life would be dealing with it. i have gout. I'm supposed to watch my diet cuz if i eat the wrong things i have to deal with excruciating pain and not being able to walk for a week...but i won't die from it.

Annoyed as I might be by their personal bullshit, that angle of the story definitely struck a chord with me, simply for the fact that it's a story that doesn't get told too often (let alone by musicians. let alone by musician whose music I love).

do you understand where that frustration comes from? he obviously struggles with it, as seen by him saying he's addicted to sugar. i struggle with my health condition and sometimes i'll get irritated with people for no reason because "they don't understand." eg. him taking offense to q-tip saying "look alive, phife" on stage.

I can definitely see how his condition would put extra stress into his life, but I think it ultimately falls on the shoulders of the individual, not their health situation. To be honest, I don't think that the health problems are the root of the issue. Like I said earlier, it comes down to ego and bad communication.

Q-tip pretty much admitted partially, in retrospect, that he shouldn't of been on him about exercising and getting right like he did once he learned Phife had diabetes. He stated he should of handled that differently, but that wasn't the entire point. The whole problem was that Q-tip was so focused on making music that he overlooked or bypassed his homie's health as such a serious life-threatening ordeal. He assumed that many people deal with diabetes so it's not such a big deal, and treated Phife like it wasn't.

And that's what really fucked it up in Phife's point of view. He's going through on a daily basis a way of life that one wrong move will be detrimental, and his oldest friend in the world isn't reaching out for that kind of support.

What made this glaringly apparent to me is Phife's relationship with Jarobi. That scene in which Jarobi was in literal TEARS because of what Phife is going through is something that you would of NEVER get from Q-tip. Jarobi got it. He understood what his partner was going through, and did everything he could to help him in that regard, including assisting him while they are all performing which is ALSO the reason why Phife blew up on Q-tip. Tip was oblivious to the fact that Phife was hurting, and assume that Phife should of told him that he was. No he did not. If that was your partner, your right-hand man, you should do everything possible to help him would without question.

Phife was, and probably still is, very insecure about his health situation and like his wife stated, needs therapy. He needed support and felt left out by Q-tip. And this was something that continued to grow inside, and like I said, Q-tip failed to see the root of the problem. Then Phife moved to Atlanta, and during that time Q-tip decided to add more pieces to the group with Dilla and Consequence, which we all know the greatness of Dilla, but that pretty much destroyed whatever chemistry ATCQ had left. And through all of that, Phife soldiered on being part of the team UNTIL Q-tip decided to close it all without his say of the matter. Regardless of how it may of been the best at the time, regardless to how Ali Shaheed felt, that was fucked up. The reason why it was fucked up was because it was all too selfish on Q-tip's part without even checking on how his homie would feel about it. And Phife stated he never finished school, didn't have anything to fall back on and Tip left him hanging by saying the group is done. He pretty much just cut Phife's lively hood out altogether just to go solo. That's how I saw it.

As for Ali Shaheed Muhammad, his ass needed to get punched in the mouth for not even attempting to be the moderator between the two arguing men. He wouldn't speak out for SHIT when it's clear someone needed to put both of them in check. His bitch ass always just went through the motions as if he wasn't there. It's a damn shame that Jarobi, the least seen and active member of the group, is more caring about the inner beef within the group than Ali's punk-ass was. I know it sounds harsh, but I am calling it how I seen it.

Phife DID overreact on the things Q-tip was doing, but I understood that was anger and stress speaking due to the fact he was going through a life or death kind of situation at the time. Therefore, just the littlest thing was going to set him off, and Q-tip kept on doing little things that simply annoyed Phife, regardless if all of them were unintentional. I believe had Q-tip truly was that concern like Jarobi was, we STILL would be getting great NEW music from Quest!

BTW, this is exactly why I respect De La Soul so much, I do n ot recall EVER hearing an inner-beef within that group. EVER. And they still doing their thing after 20-plus years!

wouldnt have been tribe. it would have been tip. some people like a group aesthetic, even if one member of the group is more prolific than others. tip was the talent, but the group came about in a totally organic fashion...tip phife and jarobi=neighborhood friends...tip and ali=best highschool budds...so you couldnt replace or remove any member without it changing the balance and chemisty that tribe grew out of. it was bigger than just the music that was the magic. musically you can love or hate phife but his presence added something to the group regardless

you're just on some emotional shit
back in 89, before you saw any of them
you just had the music and voice
this so called group with only one main mc
and the shit was dope
nobody knew nothin' back then about chemistry
comin' across records
nobody knew much about them
it was just the voice and beats
so i hear you, but you sound sort of stannish with your reasonin'
tis all good though

if thats the case why do so many people want the GROUP back? are they all stans and youre just the enlightened one? hell mad people were glad to see jarobi back into the fold, even if it was just for live shows...thats because people liked what they brought together. im old school fam i grew up during an era of rap GROUPS. maybe you think tip solo = tribe but i dont think youre in the majority when polling tribe fans. tip the solo artist aint hittin as hard as tip in the group was (commercially or in the court of public opinion, it is what it is), whether tip was the driving force behind the group or not. if tip = tribe to you thats cool but millions of people feel otherwise hence the interest in the documentary in the first place. smh why i gotta be a stan just because i was a fan of the whole group?

of brother malik and youd rather have a solo tip jawnt over a tribe jawnt and thats cool. but me personally i like jawnts like 'butter' and 'problems' as well as phifes verses on electric and check the rhyme...i liked seein him and tip chillin together in the videos and during interviews as well as playin off of each other on stage when ive seen them live. i dug his presences as a group MEMBER...has nothin to do if whether or not he was rakim status lyrically or not. tribe fans dig/dug tribe as a unit. if you'd rather have only tip then thats cool but again...that aint tribe... and if youre talkn to tribe fans, convincing them that the group would be better off without phifediggy or that he was disposable is kinda a hard sell. but you might be on some shock post shit too so not really sure as far as that goes lol

I'll just do her tribal style and then jet
The buddy that i like is to be sexy and nice
Just good enough for the one they call phife
A brown skin buddy with shoulder length hair
Nice firm breasts and a round dairy-aire

of any rap group (or group of any kind) in history.

I saw him with Tribe in the early days & back during a more recent reunion, in between I saw Tribe without him a couple times during the BR&L era then once around the end of The Love Movement.

I can honestly say his presence or lack thereof meant absolutely nothing in a live context & his 'contributions' to their sound on record is completely negligible.

He means less than Schmoovy-Shmoov did to Digital Underground & I'm pretty sure Schmoovy-Schmoov didn't actually exist.

but still many people have expressed that they dig the fact that he was back in the fold, no matter how minimalistic his role may be (hypeman on stage at this point)...i just mentioned that to say there are those who are happy the entire click is or rather was back together if even only for a moment or two.

there are Dilla beats that i haven't heard because i was so disinterested in a Phife solo album.

i bought the first 12" and i doubt i've ever played anything except for the instrumental more than once.

Phife is JoJo. They both have the perfect voice for their style of music and era. K-Ci's voice wasn't that bad either; very distinct like Q-Tip. He was definately the star. Together they're magic.

I mean I'm not saying Phife's anything much on the mic or could hold things down on his own but he ain't Jarobi, dude made a contribution (although it's much less on the first album & more on the second/third albums, I don't remember anything he did after that point).

But he is essential to 'Can I Kick It', the trading lines things on 'Ham & Eggs' works too, sorta set the blueprint for the much better 'Check The Rhime' next album.

these dudes were 18/19 making the album & it shows at times.

The second album was where they truly elevated their status as well as the genre as a whole.

However, the back-and-forth call/response over bassline approach that worked to make a classic single on 'Check The Rhime' is rooted in the blueprint from 'Ham & Eggs'.

But "Check The Rhime" is obviously better, much like Low End Theory is better than People's Travels.

On a quick People's sidenote though: tell me before you moved to LA (because I believe you're a transplant like I am) that you didn't grow up thinking El Segundo was some backroad Mexican shantytown type of destination as the video portrayed.

I bet they even thought that when they made the song originally because I doubt being in high school they'd even ventured out here yet.

I was shocked as hell when I touched down at LAX in 2004 to move out here & found out El Segundo was basically a professional hub right next to the airport.

Now I've been working in El Segundo for the past 5 years but whenever I reference it to someone from back east, that song is almost always reflexively mentioned.

>good ol' Fred. i never knew that backstory.
>
Me neither until a coworker from Inglewood told me, it was in a longer story explaining how El Segundo cops were generally not fond of black people & how a friend of hers (a black male around 30) had gotten locked up for a full weekend over some traffic ticket bullshit after being pretty much pulled over for 'DWB' anyway.

But yeah, Redd Foxx knew the deal firsthand & took any opportunity he could to take shots in the fashion he could best.

Plus, it's just funny to hear Fred Sanford say 'El Segundo' anyway.

>however, by watching the Tribe video, you'd believe that shit
>was a damn desert. so you're saying it isn't, huh? lol.
>they really fucked that up...lol.

nah, it's not a desert, it's basically home to LAX (technically the airport might be Westchester or LA proper but it's El Segundo), LA's biggest oil refinery, the biggest public beach in the city (Dockweiler, which sadly is bordered across a road by an enormous landfill), and where thousands upon thousands (self-included & I believe DJ-R-Tistic as well) work on a daily basis each week.

It's more a place you work then one you live for most of us, though there is probably 20K people or so that live here as well but on any given week day I'd say there's at least 100-150K people in this 4/5 mile square area (even more crowded when you remove the space reserved for the department of Water & Power, the public beach, the landfill, the airport space, & the refinery space).

Anyway, this is not really a spot you'll want to visit necessarily while you're in the City of Angels but it is a spot you will almost surely pass through getting in and out.

But all that to say yeah, definitely not a desert, lol. Tip musta just pulled the name out of a hat or been watching Sanford & Son himself.

i can only speak for my immediate circle in ATL. my uncles got me into ATCQ, De La, etc. i was 12 when LET was released and blew my mind but i was the only dude in my circle who fucked with the Native Tongue collective. my friends thought they were soft for the most part. though they did like the first Black Sheep LP for reason. i was never a Phife fan. his voice was wack on the first LP. he showed his ass on LET with "Butter" being his greatest performance of all time. MM was a poor performance with "Electric Relaxation" being the lone exception and he just got worse from there. i never got why people liked him outside of the fact he was part of ATCQ. i think if we had the same technology back then as we have now and fans saw how small of a role he played in the group, Phife wouldn't get the love that he gets now. more people would be like "what the fuck does he do in the group?" I still don't know what Ali does?

For me personally, the Tribe catalog without Phife wouldnt the tribe catalog.

It makes for a great community experience, to sit in a massive room full of strangers who all share deep nostalgia for ATCQ.

And the more successful this film is theatrically, the more likely your local art-house theater will be to bring films like this to the theatre, and the more distributors will look to pick up material that hits the hip hop demographic.

Perhaps most importantly, the profits from this are split 50/50 between Rapaport and his crew--who deserve success for conceiving and undertaking this project--and A Tribe Called Quest, who deserve money for the money they lost out on from their shitty record deal they signed when they were 17.

http://www.thisisbooksmusic.com/2011/07/11/movie-review-beats-rhymes-life-a-tribe-called-quest-documentary/

==begin swipe==
My Polynesian people will understand what I’m about to say: this documentary film about A Tribe Called Quest is hip-hop’s version of Whale Rider.

If you are a fan of hip-hop music, watch this. If you are a fan of A Tribe Called Quest, tell everyone to see it, bring friends to the theaters. Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest is, in my opinion, what a hip-hop documentary should be. It represents the best in music documentaries, and Michael Rapaport did an excellent job in putting this together, and I’ll tell you why.

For me, I was someone just out of high school when I knew that Public Enemy‘s It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back would be a life changer. I had been a fan of rap music for nine years before the album dropped, my high school experience was complete shit, and what saved me was being in radio/TV production class and hip-hop. In radio/TV class, I got to be a radio DJ on a station whose format was hard rock/heavy metal. I grew up on hard rock, I’m a certified headbanger, and sadly the only way I could play hip-hop was on April Fool’s Day, as a joke. I did it, and I remember playing the then-new P.E. song “Prophets Of Rage” and getting a barrage of calls telling me “turn off that shit”. I was hooked. Almost a year later, I saw De La Soul‘s “Potholes In My Lawn” video and was immediately hooked, I had to know what it was. March 1989, I bought the 3 Feet High And Rising tape, played it endlessly. I then heard about Jungle Brothers, loved them. Then came A Tribe Called Quest.

Rap music affected me in a big way, and A Tribe Called Quest were one of those groups that were on the top for me. Solid beats, solid rhymes, solid vibe. It was indeed a Tribe Vibe, and this tribe were the Native Tongues. I’m Hawaiian, so the word “native” is not used lightly. When you are a Native Hawaiian, you are a true Hawaiian, it’s deep, it’s to the bone, in the blood. To be a Native Tongue not only meant speaking a common language, but you were true to the spirit and the source of what you were doing. Some of these things are mentioned in this documentary which covers the origins of the group, what they did as kids as they made their way towards each other, and how through miscommunication and perhaps a few bruised egos tore up what mentally, and socially connected the tribe.

One of the benefits of this documentary is that it is Q-Tip, Phife, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi without egos. They are themselves, understanding not so much their roles in hip-hop history, but their connections with each other as friends and associates through music. It’s also great to hear comments from Pharrell Williams, Large Professor, Mike D., Mike G., Afrika Baby Bam, Monie Love, and Chris Lighty. speak on how their music and work as a group affected them. Along the way, one can see how the bruised egos turned into open wounds, and in many ways its bittersweet.

One thing that the movie reveals is something I’ve believed for a long time. There came a time when the music stopped feeling special, or at least that unique quality started to be branded and marketed. While that last statement is never said properly, it seems that what the music industry was becoming had a major factor in the group becoming less of a unit and more as co-workers who at times couldn’t stand each other.

Beats, Rhymes & Life also hints at the changes of the music, how they’ve become elders, and how their audience has become older too, all while influencing those who truly wish to listen, learn and understand what A Tribe Called Quest were about. Just as they talk about a need for community, I think as a fan I seeked that too, especially in a town that lacked what I was looking for through the music, and perhaps in life. I found good friends, and I will never doubt those friends, but somehow hip-hop became the loudest chain for all of us. As kids, we all wanted to build up fantasies and myths about our favorite groups, to where we were honoring streets like Linden and Farmers without ever setting food in the city these streets are on. What this documentary does is pop the myth, or in truth allow us to see what we’ve always known: these guys have always been regular guys with a deep love for music, they just happened to have the right chemistry at the right time, and that’s what created that magic we heard and ideally shared. Yet as we see these men in their 40′s, and as some of us see ourselves there or getting there, we watch and go “what now? Is this where we all walk into the sunset and say goodbye?”

We don’t want the good times to end, and yet we are perhaps waiting for that whale to take us deep into the abyss, to places unknown, with our without the community that we defined as being home. This film is very much about Beats, Rhymes & Life, journalists who archived their lives through music and made some of us put on backpacks, or have enough water to get us from here to there. With luck, this documentary will not only entertain those of us who still feel the connection to the Tribe Vibe, but also teach the current and next generation about one of the best hip-hop groups ever, of any and all eras. Also, for a music that is based on communication, don’t allow a breakdown in communication amongst friends break down to where you lose sight of who you are. I also liked the idea that fans should be able to show support to what each of them have done away from ATCQ, and while everyone wants to relive the magic that made them fans in the first place, you’re not less of a fan if you decide to explore elsewhere. Exploring elsewhere is what Tip, Phife, Ali, and Jarobi continue to do on their paths of rhythm, for even though they may be on their own separate journeys, something will always bring them back together, even if it means simply us putting the needle back on the turntable, popping the tape back into the deck, or cuing up the iPod to the playlist of choice.

I believe that every film production (the ones on this level) has to be registered as a legal entity (LLC, Ltd...whatever).

Changing the name of the business couldn't have been a concern to those involved.

The first part of the Doc had me there, they captured it beautifully...

A couple of points that stood out...

When Monie is speaking, she's saying...we don't have to do fuck the police, there's a group for that...we don't have to say fight the power, there's a group for that...That's what the "Golden Era" epitomizes to me, not only was there immense diversity, but those groups were having commercial success as well. You didn't have to stick to A formula, or have A look...if the shit was fresh, it got played.

I've been on the "next" idea for awhile...you can see the formation of the Native Tongue, the influence they had on the next generation of acts...WHERE IS THE 3RD GENERATION OF THE NATIVE TONGUE SOUND??? IMO, cats like Mos, Common, and the Roots dropped the ball

I thought the Doc did itself a disservice by even focusing on the "beef" because it doesn't answer the questions...What I took as the dissolution of the group was Phife's moving to Atlanta. The physical separation was too much, compounded by other factors that are inevitable as a boy becomes a man...

I wanted Tip to say, yeah that was me, i did that, the production, etc...all me. Then maybe Phife would fall back and realize he was kind of along for the ride.

You could see Hip-Hop come full circle, from the small venues they started out rocking for mostly urban youth and ending with rocking stadium tours today for mostly suburban kids. True reflection of what the genre has become.

BUT THEY STILL OWE JIVE 1 MORE ALBUM...HAHA...YEAH YA'LL

and it kinda caught me off guard. It made me feel bad for Ali. It was on the part when Tip was doing an interview (looked like for a radio station) and he was like "it just ran its course. I produced the first three Tribe albums so it was only natural". That was the first time I ever heard him take credit for those albums like that.

those topics, relatively speaking, deserved to be brushed over.

for sure, seeing it in the theater adds something, Black Thought was consistently getting the laughs with his commentary throughout.

I wish I had been in a full theater to see it. There were about seven people in the one I went to. All of us were laughing at a lot of the dialogue.

Phife is a really funny dude.

That close up they did of Ali while Q Tip was rambling on and on about how he never had a problem with Phife was classic.

Black Thought had some of the funniest commentary

Pharrell's obvious adoration for Tip's production

The whole "Seaman's Furniture" part

The part where Chris Lighty described having to TAKE the LET album from them and turn it in to Jive. In fact, Chris Lighty was hilarious.

The Native Tongues formation...awesome

Jarobi breaking down when talking about Phife's condition. Dude showed mad, raw emotion.

Tip finding the drums for "Can I Kick It?"

I mean they spent 45 mins on the drama but only 5 mins on the last 2 albums and the new ppl added to te group. Not that they need to go in extreme detail about Dilla but at least touch on it beyond a passing comment. Regardless of your feelings on those albums I'm sure there's lots of stories behind them.
