Madlib might be the perfect producer for Gibbs, I thought some of his earlier tracks were overproduced or monotonous but this right here is smooth. I like the soulful retro feel from Madlib and its not over-saturated with features like a lot of other Gibbs albums.

This has the potential to be Gibbs' best piece of work but I'll check back in after I've played it a couple of times.

YG's success is his own, he's been grinding and putting on the Mustard sound for a while.

It's his best "album" by far. It feels like he put more of himself into this project than any before. All the guest spots work as well. I hope these two guys work together more.

I think what works here is that Madlib has him rapping over some unusual beats, timing and the "dust" looped up sh*t that'd make 75% of the game sound good.

In the end, I find myself amazed that the pair are working together and that Gibbs DOES sound glad to be doing it. We've heard him say all of this before but just not over production this left-field. That's what we're tuned in for, I think.

it's not as one-dimensional as he has been recently. he gets a lot more personal on Pinata and some of the metaphors are really slick and going over people's heads

there is some pain, anguish and American social critique among all the Thug posturing

also the nigga raps like an AK-47, so even if it was his typical one note shit, I'd still love it

"Murda on My Mind", "County Bounce", "Just Tryin' ta Make It", "Mone Mo' Time", these sorts of tracks were what made Midwestgangsta an instant classic to so many people, and left guys like me a little flustered by Gibbs' increased (but still fairly underground) popularity outside of the internet during his time with CTE. He still had topic diversity but that regretful, hollow feeling of a smart dude trapped in a bad situation just wasn't there the past 2, 3 years. It's good to have it back in the small doses we get it like "Deeper" (I feel like he's drawing on similar issues he had with women on "Talkin' Bout You") and the couple other cuts on here.

I'll say this tho: nobody has his dexterity and grit on lock. Like there's something about the tone of Gibbs' voice and his delivery that is almost otherworldly at some points on the record.

Scarface has covered more topics than Gibbs, I'd venture to say. Ice Cube as well. I'm not a 2Pac fan but even he's got the songwriting chops to take it other places. G Rap did earlier in his career (I don't include the fake mobster talk).

Gibbs, TO ME AND THIS MY PERSONAL VIEW, just has a redundancy to his bars that while isn't wack just doesn't sound like he's pushing newness into his bar space. Some of these beats made him work a little bit tho and I like that.

But, the only cat I would NOT have included was Redman. The whole switch up of his flow from his first to second album and his metaphors and similes give him a pass in my book. I will say that his later albums do, unfortunately, show him rapping in cruise control, which is never great for anyone.

I grew tired of Rae's style after his first, so I'd say he's the worst culprit on this list. I can't tell you one quotable verse he's spit since. He LITERALLY just goes through the motions.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

And there's that too. I don't see a lot of different patterns, and topics....NOT that I need that in a rapper but it seems like Gibbs gets by on a little bit of effort and a massive amount of street cred, whatever that means.

Guilty Simpson is a WHOLE 'nother thread for me lol.

The lack of flow pattern diversity has always been what's bothered me most about Gibbs. He uses that SAME FLOW on EVERY song, which makes it almost impossible to catch on to any creative content he may be spewing.

If he switched it up at least a LIL bit, he'd be almost unstoppable.

>Guilty Simpson is a WHOLE 'nother thread for me lol.

SAME EXACT problem Guilty has. Guilty be's saying some of the illest shit, but, it can get lost in his monotone, redundant flow.

like

the end of a posse cut is supposed to be a game-ending dunk

that verse was like a soft layup at the beginning of the game that bounced around the rim and kinda went in.

fuck, he's so bad. should i even be a dweeb and say emerson didn't write novels...

but the LA Rap scene loves the kid. He sits comfortably with Gibbs, Q, Ab Soul, Earl, Chemist, Evidence, Vince Staples, all seem hella cool with him, or okay with working with him in the least

I swear Stones Throw has a team of mercenaries whose only job is to kill links of their releases

They should hire whoever is so good at it out to major labels.

Like a can't get a Madlib beat tape from years ago, but I get get Watch the Throne, And Drake shits a week early!

Can't even be mad at that

Although, I will begin my rant with the disclaimer that we basically are like thieves complaining about there being nothing to steal, BUT, I've always felt that if they spent as much time figuring out how to get better distribution for their releases as they do sniping links, it would be better usage of their time.

I can find a pretty good handful of Rhymesayers releases (at least new ones) in Target while I've never found an ST release in Target. EVER.

But, what do I know...

It's always been super interesting to me how Madlib started out with the Likwit crew, him and Xzibit started getting placements around the same time and while all eyes were on Xzibit, Madlib only got a verse from him on that one record in 1997 right before Xzibit blew up and teamed with Dre's camp. Ever since he's been flirting with hardcore collabs, whether it's Guilty Simpson or X's old Strong Arm Steady crew, but between the Saturday Morning and Black Tape remixes it's obvious that Madlib's always wished he could work with a rapper who had a balance between underground and commercial gangster posturing.

Gibbs is finally that dude and for people who've taken note of that little interesting aside to Madlib's career it's been neat to finally see him get a shot to make that record. It's also interesting to hear him seemingly very conscious of the opportunity since his samples are a lot cleaner here, his bass much heavier almost like a southern record at times. It reminds me of prime Roc-a-Fella beats at times, and then I think about how Jay-Z had some broke dude remake one of Madlib's beats for the re-introduction of Jay's career and how salty Lib must've been about that in a year he was already taking some heavy, heavy personal life Ls.

You're kind of reaching with this one.

I wouldn't write that sentence sobering up now, but I meant the loss of Dilla in February coupled with a sample I think anyone who'd heard the first Quas album would forever associate with Madlib in November just seems like a rough pair of bookends to that year.

obviously it was in poor taste and I regret typing it.

(I do realize Premier tapped it first but I prefer how Lib/Jay-Z dude let it ride more)

A: I don’t know what happened. Maybe he didn’t wanna pay my fee, or maybe he didn’t wanna go in that direction. Probably the money thing, he wanted to put his name on my— I actually don’t wanna talk about that. A lot of people record over my music and it don’t come out.

I don't blame Lib. Ye does that a lot. Takes a track from a producer, does his thing to it and gets co-production credit. I see Lib as a dude who doesn't want you making alterations to a track he created.

I watched an employee check a computer for stock. All of the stores (maybe 9 or 10) in the area listed it as unavailable.

I ordered it online, and confirmed that it was unavailable for pickup anywhere near me.

Perhaps it depends on where you live, but I've read similar stories elsewhere.

I feel like they get lost behind the beats at times. I definitely don't rate this album as the heatrock that other cats have stated, but, it's a pretty decent listen and it's great to hear something different from both parties (although I have heard all of the EPs).

As ususal, Madlib ends up putting one of the hottest beats as just an interlude. The bonus beat at the end of Bomb is CRAZY! It sounds unfinished, but, even that little snippet had me rocking.

My only other thing would be that some of the beats are just a LITTLE too busy, which forces Gibbs to kind of play catch up, but, I don't think there's many others that could have done such a great job at that task.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

of the album, imo... not because he killed it (which he kinda did imo), but that portion was a pretty crazy sonic blend.. i think gibbs kills it too and while he's on the track, the beat sounds like straight up, certified, daytime cruising and smoking music.. db comes in and all of a sudden the same beat/track sounds otherworldly or bizarro world style.. nothing flipped, but the whole thing kinda flipped.. that's some super interesting contrast.. made me feel some type of way lol

nigga really upset his main broad fell for a college boy when she went to college herself. Gibbs can't understand how she don't want/love the trap lifestyle no more

only to have her come back and smash on the low

than she ends up pregnant and says it's not college boy's baby and might be Gibbs

also it has the most poignant lyric showing distaste for college boy's aspirations to be an astronaut. that line is so hilarious to me. Gibbs basically sayin', "why you wanna fuck with this weak nigga trying to work for NASA and shit!" lol

if that aint heartbreak, I don't know what is.

the vocals sound like they were run through a crazy straw in some spots, like on the Danny Brown verse, and no it doesn't add anything to it either
shitty is shitty and sometimes it would benefit Libby to take more time on things
funny how all I said was it was a good album but not a great one and you niggas lose your shit yet again knowing full well you won't have the album in steady ro in a year's time

rap albums. 10 at least. that's at least 2 for every year

as far as the mix, I actually like that this album has some low end to it. Fitting for a Gibbs collab. made me think maybe Lib wasn't part of the mixdown, since recently, his lps tend to sound "flat".

I like the mix on the vocals as well, but agree about the mix on Danny's verse and some parts where the levels go up and down. BUT than again I'm the type of dude who found nothing wrong with Blu's recent bedroom recordings from a sound standpoint. i mean we grew up on Blowout Comb and 36 Chambers, and listened to Keith Murray, Pharcyde and The Boogiemonsters on a damn walkman. I'm not an audiophile like that.

And only time will tell about this LP. I mean still too early for 2013, but I still listen to albums from 2011/12 like:
XXX
RAP Music
GKMC
Rare Chandeliers
Habits & Contradictions
Control System
Super Chocolate Black Simian
Black UP
Life Is Good
Reloaded

>rap albums. 10 at least. that's at least 2 for every year
>

-Cuban Linx 2
-Elmatic
-Stimulus Package
-Professor @ Large
-Marcberg
-Brazilian Dedication
-Toeachizown
-Cancer For Cure
-Czarface
-Ode to the Ghetto

and that's just off the top of my head without really thinking

>as far as the mix, I actually like that this album has some
>low end to it. Fitting for a Gibbs collab. made me think maybe
>Lib wasn't part of the mixdown, since recently, his lps tend
>to sound "flat".
>

lo-fi is just fine, no problem there
but the mix just sounds bad in places, it's not an aesthetic preference

>I like the mix on the vocals as well, but agree about the mix
>on Danny's verse and some parts where the levels go up and
>down. BUT than again I'm the type of dude who found nothing
>wrong with Blu's recent bedroom recordings from a sound
>standpoint. i mean we grew up on Blowout Comb and 36 Chambers,
>and listened to Keith Murray, Pharcyde and The Boogiemonsters
>on a damn walkman. I'm not an audiophile like that.
>

like I said it's not about aesthetics, it's about mix quality and this album really lacks in that department
Madvillainy is a beautiful album sonically, and it's as lo-fi as it gets

>And only time will tell about this LP. I mean still too early
>for 2013, but I still listen to albums from 2011/12 like:
>XXX
>RAP Music
>GKMC
>Rare Chandeliers
>Habits & Contradictions
>Control System
>Super Chocolate Black Simian
>Black UP
>Life Is Good
>Reloaded
>Greneberg
>Blue Chips
>R4

>Cancer 4 Cure
>Vodka & Ayahausca
>No York
>Watch The Throne
>
>but I guess in your world I'd be lying about listening to them
>still huh?

it strikes me as a silly thing to lie about but I'm not particularly invested in whether you do or not
I'm a little sick of people pulling the usual hyperbole upon release then acting like an album didn't age well when the damn thing wasn't that great to begin with or was only just good

really like the album overall, but like many others- too many bum ass guest spots bringing down the quality. 1 listen, and not even considering the bum guest spots, D Brown verse was doo-doo (hated the delivery) and Ab Soul (who i LOVE) shit felt rather weak as shit... but i guess i need to spend some more time with this before i can really feel too strongly about anything.

but from what i heard so far,'lib was lib (greatness). Gibbs was Gibbs(excellence w/ a side of ignorance, and another side of wisdom...)

I might be able to get into some of these beats, but I don't know. Hit the skip button after he started rapping.

Does this dude really only have 1.5 flows in his entire arsenal?

...cause these are the most "anyone coulda made this" beats I've ever heard on a full Madlib produced LP. It's a good LP and I'm bumping it, but the production is very tame for Lib.
