...is these guys can afford really the good teachers. Wayne presumably employs at least one or two guitarists as the backup band. Why not pay one of those cats to give him lessons?

these dudes have probably actually had people try to show them but they have their heads so far up their asses they think they can make some kind of seamless transition to an instrument because they can rap or (in Dre's case) rap plus do a bit of board/production work.

The bottom line is Dre doesn't work very hard at perfecting his craft musically & hasn't done so in about ten years.

But Andre at least sounds like he's had a lesson or 2.

Wayne literally sounds like he just picked up a guitar for the 1st time in his life every time he plays.

I gotta admit, Dre being one of my heroes, it's so disappointing to hear that solo. After all these years??!! lolol

Years ago, he was playing guitar live for that song Prototype and it was fairly bad, but it almost sounded like he regressed. Off key, bad timing, wtf. Im just imagining him in the studio saying "allright, got it on that take...that's a wrap" Smh.

some of the biggest releases in recent memory (channel orange, gfid, take care, strange clouds) have proudly boasted an andre 3000 feature
when did it get to this?
if the demand is this high, why not an outkast album?

Amidst all this criticism....the song is effing AWESOME. The musicianship is top notch. The bassist is tuff. The keys are tuff.

Perhaps the guitar solo works for me cause it's a juxtaposition against the rest of the song. An amateur playing lead overtop very capable session musicians. Whatever.

and there might have been a couple old-man jewels in there which seem even more profound next to Rick Ross.

But really he's kicking that same stilted-spoken-word-flow with minimal musical accompaniment (so not to be bothered to attempt riding a beat) he's been doing for a decade.

Hey disregard my opinion about whatever you want. Seriously whatever criticism you want to have of me fine. But c'mon. This shit is horrid. I wanted to go back and re-listen to it so I could detail point by point just how bad it is, but the nerve union is in solidarity with the ear led senses boycott of anything having to do with that song. I'm spitting on my fingers as I type this at my own disgust to even think about that song again.

Sure the song was pretty great up until that point, but that solo was so bad it completely ruined anything within a thirty minute vicinity of Rick Ross shouting whatever madness he said to introduce Andre. I want to qualify that by saying I know a lot about hyperbole. This is not hyperbole. The solo was that bad.

And the only reason I'm creating a minor revolution in my own body to even write about it is because none of the writers have the balls to say something. Biggest media hit for it was SPIN which called it 'scraggly' in one of sixteen reasons to listen to the song. OKP called it Jimi Style. Pitchfork avoided the song all together. Rolling Stone ignored it. Not much coming from the blog world other than a few streams. How is it not news the cat who's been practicing for ten years lays down the worst solo in history as he goes into the lead role of a Hendrix biopic where the family has said nah b, so instead he's going to have to put his talents to use on other peoples songs. How is this being ignored. Now he's set to direct the video for the song. How is he thinking about directing a video. He should be beating his own ass Divinci Code style for a whole year before he even thinks again.

Letting this shit go is the state of music yall. Seriously. To let that shit be acceptable puts the bar so low you can't even call the shit music anymore. How is this happening. This is worse than fucking Wall Street people. Mofos need to be out occupying 3K house until a law is passed that he can never ever do that again. If up until that point Andre had spit 328 verses, he owes the public another 328 verses before he can even pick up the guitar again.

"Even when teases substance on the eight-minute 'Sixteen,' prefacing the track by grumbling about the impossibility of fitting all that's on his mind into a standard 16 bars, he just uses his double-length verse to rap about his usual Cadillacs and flat screens. Much more memorable is Andre 3000's supersized verse on that same track, in part because Andre stamps it with the album's most bizarre moment: a hopelessly amateurish guitar solo that leaves no doubt it's actually him playing guitar. His triple-thumbed riffage sticks out against the track's perfectly coifed strings and woodwinds like a bleach stain on a Persian rug. Maybe that rug could use a few more stains."

I'm still shocked by how shitty it was. How can you practice something for 12 years and produce that? I think what let me down was that I convinced myself he was good on the guitar, even though I'd barely heard him play it. He's still probably my favourite rapper, but damn... not sure if I can ever listen to him the same again.

He's better than Weezy though. At least you can see what he was TRYING to go for in his solo - mirroring his little bridge thing before that - whereas Weezy just picked up a guitar and pushed a few notes down.

Maaaaaan,

First off, Andre KILLED the verse on the track. I mean MURDERED IT. Anyone saying otherwise just mad their own homegrown mixtape ain't shit.

Secondly, the guitar playing was behind the beat a little ON PURPOSE and clearly establishes his "sound" and "style".

Dre just might shut down the game pretty soon. Just hand him the plaque. Straight up.

I'm hoping dude drop a new double album type project SOON.

Hatin don't make us like yo shit any better than it actually sounds.

You can't really trip on his track record though.

He dropped a classic with The Love Below.

Every guest appearance he has made, he JACKS the host artist's energy and walks away with having murdered it.

So, I wouldn't bet against this dude.

And, really, that track didn't require an over blown guitar solo. It was lazy on purpose. It went with the flow of the song quite nicely.

Dude's been consistent as hell with 100% dopeness since day one.

Remember...most cats thought "Hey Ya" was some bullshit when it first dropped too. We all know how that shit went.

Huge fan of all OutKast, semi-apologist for "Idlewild," will still listen to all of "Love Below" even though I think a good third of it is wack (the other two-thirds is good to great). Guy's an amazing rapper and for a latecomer to the wannabe-Prince genre, pretty good at that too.

But as a guitarist and fan of guitar music, I cannot give him a pass on that solo. That shit is terrible - poorly played and out of tune. It has no business being on a commercially-released track, it's actually THAT bad.

Agreed. And the thing is, there's NO excuse for this. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE WHATSOEVER for him to be playing that horrible when he's supposed to have taken lessons for the past 8 to ten years. NO EXCUSE. Period.
