The fact that that's 1000 Deaths--with some new drums--is what is making me hopeful.

same here.

but the label will want to make sure this hits. to reach those masses (again) he needs this type of big statement.

w that in mind, i kind of dig the black messiah/ 2nd coming type thing. cool imagery too. things fall apart style.

i just hope it doesn't get too serious. fortunately there will be songs like 'sugah daddy' and 'aint that easy' to lighten it up a bit.

but yeah... music first.

Set the tone by frontloading your big "comeback" album with all kinds of Christ/Messiah imagery, so that when things get rough and you lose your nerve down the road, you have the ready-made excuse of blaming the audience for having too-high expectations of you!

what do you mean?

he could just put this out, go on a tour w his vanguards band & then quit.

we just have a title at the moment. 'black messiah' could mean, he's coming back to show the world how he thinks popular black music needs to be done. period.

doesn't say he has to do that every year, every decade or even ever again.

and whatever. it's marketing. do what gets eyes on you right?

this seems to be done in a tasteful way.

people will always check back for this guy (they just need a good reminder lol)

I knew this title would be the ultimate "hater-bait" for the usual haters that are so dedicated and committed to hating on everything this man does (and doesn't do). The title is much deeper than the average simpleton/internet troll can comprehend and I know exactly where D is going with all of this. It's making a bold statement about black people in the USA and the fact many believe that black people in this country and worldwide are the true Tribe of Judah..(as was Christ the Messiah). Though in D's case..it's more hardcore (Yahweh Yahshua) based upon his spiritual upbringing and in saying this..I truly don't believe the title is on some narcissistic shit. There's a good reason why he chose to use 1000 Deaths w/Brother Malcom's speech as the trailer music. If you listen closely to some of the mumbled lyrics to the original demo of 1000 Deaths, then you'll totally get it (even though there are only a few lyrics you can actually make out). The brother is a lot deeper than most people are aware of and if in fact you have a soul, then it'll make sense to you. Unfortunately, most heads on "Okayhater" wasn't born with one and that of course makes it virtually impossible for them to look past the exterior because he's always judged and criticized by the haters for his laziness, addictions, dysfunctions, and lack of output over the years. And yeah...dude is probably a real character that lives up to all of that. But so was Sly, Marvin, George, and some of his other musical heroes. Genius cats are kinda bugged and with their talent comes all of these other things that puts them in a questionable light at times, but i take them as they are and i don't expect them to live up to any expectations I have of them. And of course just like with Voodoo, a lot of heads are not gonna get what he's on musically with this new album. But best believe..it's gonna be one of the best, most soulful and uncompromising albums ever made within the last 25 years or so. All those early Funkadelic albums that's he's been so heavily influenced by all these years away from the spotlight were on that same vibration and they packed some serious socio-political messages regarding black people in this country. Also, peep the recent GQ interview with Dave Chappelle where he briefly talks about D's radical outgoing message on his answering machine. I don't care what anyone says.."Black Messiah" is a DOPE and very fitting title for this next lp because I firmly believe that title alone is making a bold statement about the state of black music and black people in this country; especially with songs like 1000 Deaths and The Charade. With all this madness surrounding Eric Garner, Mike Brown, Trayvon, along with all this bullshit on the radio and especially on the net, people need some light and salvation and D wants to bring thru his music. You gotta admit...dude is sorely missed; regardless of all that other shit people always be trippin' on concerning him. I don't believe D thinks he himself is some messiah of any sort, but the title seems to come off like a metaphor and a desire to have his music to reach the ones that can be reached. Contrary to what many may think, real black music is a dying art form on the overground (mainstream) and he's truly one of the last of the greats who can help keep the torch lit in this game. And real talk, a lot of you nothing ass mf's on here hating on dude are like some of his biggest fans because if you weren't..then you wouldn't spend so much time on here finding the most creative ways to nitpick and tear his shit down all day/everyday. That shit gets old after a while and it always stir these bs debates about how unproductive and washed up this guy is. But I'm willing to bet anything that most of you mf's will be owning a copy of the lp when it drops; be it you going out to cop it with your own $ or you coming up on a bootleg copy. And of course once you've given it a good listen you're naturally gonna go in on him because the album doesn't live up to your bs expectations. The haters are still gonna hate because they (in truth) are nothing but overzealous music fans whose entire existence centers around tearing down others who secretly wish they could do what D does..(truth).

With that said, go on 'head D and do your thing good brother and know that I myself and MANY others are so looking forward to this new chapter.

I'm hoping there's a reason behind the title that's not related to him
But If it is, it's back to the same old thing again

I'm really hoping it's not "I'm here to save the world" thing

Liner notes:

“Black Messiah is a hell of a name for an album. It can easily be misunderstood. Many will think it’s about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I’m calling myself a Black Messiah. For me, the title is about all of us. It’s about the world. It’s about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah.

*

It’s about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and in every place where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen. It’s not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them. Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are), but calling this album Black Messiah creates a landscape where these songs can live to the fullest. Black Messiah is not one man. It’s a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader.”

thus making it a very clever title if you ask me...

But if it's an ironic reference--ha ha ha nice one.

I'd think he'd be better served not even touching that issue at all and just concentrating on making good music.

this Messiah shit isnt ironic, fresh or none of that

this is some bullshit is what it is

2uest prolly have something to do with it too lol

as already stated, the music should do the talking, not wink wink nudge nudge titles or labels

this is akin to Pookie going to The Carter just cause he got back to basics etc

Messiah..get thee entire fuck outta here with that

Because when folks came at him about his looks recently some fans and fans here were up in arms saying "but the music is tight and thats what counts"

Now this joker wanna act like he been the shit for every year gone and not a puddle of mess?

Black Messiah? "JJ take that picture off the wall!!"-Florida

i see nothing wrong w/homie using a 'gimmick' to generate and/or stir interest in the album. artists have done that since art began. it's fine.

w/o knowing if this 'Black Messiah' thing is even about D'Angelo, i expect that if it's about D it's a reference to all of the expectation surrounding the project. he's embracing it and turning it back on us. he's laughing about it and we're to laugh w/him. and to enjoy the music.

Sly did som'n similar w/There's A Riot Goin On. that title was a gimmick - the title worked on 3 levels: 1) Sly and the Fam had been accused of creating a circumstance in Chicago that resulted in a riot after an audience was kept waiting for hrs for their show to begin, 2) Marvin Gaye had recently released a landmark album that posed the question What's Going On, 3) Sly used the title to comment on the rioting that'd been going on across the country since the mid-60s - he felt there should be no riots.

^ Sly did that and yet the music on the album wasn't overshadowed by the title. it wasn't compromised. that album is widely respected now as a classic.

so this Black Messiah thing doesn't necessarily have to hurt the music or the audience's appreciation of it.

it is to laugh.

laugh. enjoy yourself.

it's okay.

its funny to me how people have so much to say about it being about the music...yet are the main ones catching feelings about a title they have no idea about the meaning....literal or not..

if the music should do the talking.... wait till the music comes out and then talk.

he could hit a double and be a hall of famer right today...he ain't got to be Hank Aaron..

but he'll be fine...

my main thing has always been for dude's health really... He don't have to make any more records.... just live...be healthy..and if he can make it back to some level of success.... he can be an inspiration for people who have had those same type of issues....

either way it's a win win for him if we look at this in a practical sense...

perfect marketing.

most people forgot about you or don't even know about you.

this will have everybody talking about you.

in other words they will check you out.

perfect since people will eat up a savior in popular black music.

only thing is you have to back it up w music.

he probably can.

and even if he can't entirely...

they can always hide behind the "y'all don't get it yet, but you will in years to come" argument.

and people will eat that up too.

win win.

this campaign is solid.

and he doesn't even have to drop another record after this.

or at least people won't be expecting anything new within 5-15 yrs time.

We're talking about a dude with 2 real albums.. one of which is called a classic by some and most of them were going to check for a new D album any way. The other one was an easier listen for a wider audience but it's close to 20 years old and truthfully isn't all that memorable to most. This approach would be foolish for a cat like Maxwell and he's stayed much more active and has a much richer catalog imo. There is nothing D has done to make me think he is going to roll off the mat and drop a 3rd album that's going to live up to a title 'Black Messiah' If he does then more power to him.

that's probably the joke.

when i saw the title i assumed so, at least.

i seriously doubt homeboy thinks he is the Black Messiah or that his album will save Black Music from __. i expect the title is a play on the expectations projected on the album by fans and critics and whatnot due to the long delay between this one and his last one.

when i saw the title i didn't take it literally. i expect D is having some fun w/this and i immediately decided to have fun w/him. i lightened up.

fuck you.

That's what I'm thinking. OKP is talking about Monday, so maybe Monday Midnight EST for Itunes and Tuesday for in-store copies?

In order for it to be in stores by Tuesday, said stores would have had to know about it for at least a week in advance.

And don't you think somebody would have said something?

http://consequenceofsound.net/2014/12/dangelo-has-finished-black-messiah-his-first-new-album-in-14-years/

D’Angelo has finished his first new album in 14 years and will premiere it to the public during a listening session in New York on Sunday, December 14th. The follow-up to 2000’s Voodoo is titled Black Messiah and attributed to D’Angelo and his band the Vanguard.

Fans can RSVP to the listening session, which is being hosted by renowned African American writer Nelson George. The event takes place at the Dream Hotel in Chelsea beginning at 4pm.

In anticipation, the website for D’Angelo’s manager, Kevin Liles, has shared a brief teaser trailer for the album.

It was all the false starts and years of "its coming..its about finished..he's a guitar god now, It's due August 2012... here it comes" stuff that made it frustrating

if these hype machinists had shut the fuck up it wouldnt have been so ridiculous and frustrating

D'Angelo Will Unveil New Album 'Black Messiah' at NYC Listening Party

The R&B singer will play the album in its entirety at an event hosted by Nelson George

By Jason Newman | December 12, 2014

After 14 years, numerous false starts and nearly two years of D'Angelo's next album being "99 percent done," the singer will unveil the follow-up to 2000's Voodoo this Sunday.

The R&B singer will play the completed album, Black Messiah, in its entirety at a listening session in New York hosted by writer Nelson George and organized by Red Bull Music Academy and Afropunk.

As Consequence of Sound notes, D'Angelo's manager Kevin Liles shared a mysterious teaser trailer to promote the album.
George and the singer sat down in May at New York's Brooklyn Museum for a public discussion. When the topic of "neo-soul" came up, D'Angelo hinted that he was embarking on a new musical direction with his own music. "I respect for what it is, but anytime you put a name on something, you just put it in a box," said D'Angelo. "You want to be in a position where you can grow as an artist. You never want to be told, 'Hey, well, you're a neo-soul artist.' Right now, I'm not. We're going someplace else."

D'Angelo also referenced his return to the spotlight, which began with a triumphant covers set at Bonnaroo 2012. Since then, whispers of a new album have appeared periodically.

Shortly after Bonnaroo, Questlove told Rolling Stone that D'Angelo had recorded nearly 30 tracks at Electric Lady, the same New York studio where the singer cut Voodoo. "He is about to take a radical 180 turn with this record," Questlove said at the time. "It's going to throw people off the same way that Prince's Dirty Mindthrew his R&B fanbase off. In the past few years, he's discovered Bowie and Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Pet Sounds, Captain Beefheart and Zappa." At the time, Questlove said that the musician was experimenting with guitar arrangements and creating his own keyboard sounds.

In January 2013, Questlove told Billboard that D'Angelo's album was "99 percent done." "I would not be far off by saying this is probably my generation's version of Sly There's a Riot Goin' On," the drummer said. "It's potent. It's funky. It's an extremely hard pill to swallow.

"It's going to take you about 10 years to digest this record," he added. "Totally brilliant. Just the way this society works with music...being able to judge if something is a classic after the first listen, you can do that after 30 seconds on this. And the fact that we started this record in 2004, and it still sounds like it came out five years from now, it is a testament to the timelessness of it."

In a June interview, Liles said that the Bonnaroo show inspired D'Angelo to want to finish the album. "He very bluntly put it, 'Kev, the studio and the stage: that's my lifeblood. Now that I've touched it again, now that I see it again, I wanna be sure that the baby I'm about to have – the album – that I take it to the point where it's all it can be.'"

a studio version of. It definitely sounds good sonically. But I seriously have no clue what he's saying. I always looked at the D'Mumblo stuff from Voodoo as more joke than reality. Vocals were low. But you could understand what he was saying. This song though. The vocals are are up. But they're really hard to decipher with the effects added to them.

verse 2

(...) for my philosophy, on top of that i give you what you need
it's nice to me (...) smile, sometimes i gotta just ease it out, hold up, wait a minute
and even if i wanted to give her some of my love, i give her the pacifier (?)

this is the way i clap my baby on the butt
she got me hooked with only just one glance
she needs some spanking, baby that's what's up
i said i want to be the one she (... ... ... ...) romance

chorus 2

my indecision never (...)
you best believe that i will be your shugah daddy

not sure i believe that entirely, sounds like a way to deflect from the hype and self-aggrandisement of the title.

but hey, if it makes people become politically pro-active, then great.

ive never really thought of dangelo as a great thinker though really. i think his politics are basically learnt from hip hop and 70s soul. so im not really expecting to hear any great new ideas from him in that department.

and tell you exactly what they mean without you having to use any creative thought to figure out what they mean ..then yeah...maybe you wouldn't view it the way it's intended...

but I got it right away...

during the introduction to the book Malcolm X the FBI files...there is a copy of a memo that refers to them (them being the FBI) ... needing to stop the rise of a "Black Messiah"... that along with the imagery of a group of protestors raising their hands ....probably in reference to the Ferguson protests.... then adding the words of Dr. Khalid being specific about the Messiah or Divine figure being a Black man....It is clear that the title Black Messiah is referring to a populist type message that is timely to a group of people...Black people who are currently under attack in situations like we have seen with the police and even prior to that Trayvon Martin...

whereas previously the government...FBI made efforts to stop the rise of a Black Messiah to quell the rise of Freedom among Black people..... Police Brutality and a lack of justice again is attempting to suppress the rise of Black people...particularly the Black man..

if you recall D'Angelo's performance at the American Festival thing a couple years ago he dedicated the song Charade to Trayvon Martin...and spoke about how that represented a larger problem.....

somewhere on this promotional video or on something that was released there is a quote from the lyrics of Charade...All we wanted was a chance to talk, instead we got outlined in chalk....

I think with all that is happening recently ... that prompted D to change the title of the album..and rush the release...obviously because the hands up picture had to have been taken really recently....

but again..it all makes sense and to me is a very timely and clever title for the album.

3) I know damn well this didn't take 15 years to make. Was he really in the studio tinkering with this song for 15 years???

>1)i don't see this being a $ track...nice here I am again

My guess is that's all it is supposed to be. Great tune, great performance, but it's not going to be a major radio hit and my guess is that whoever decided this would be the first to come out knew that.

fwiw, Voodoo had *one* "$" track and I'm convinced that was something of a fluke... by which I simply mean that Untitled was sort of out of place on the album, sonically, not unlike Left & Right (the $ track that wasn't). I'm glad he dropped the track, but anyone looking for it to wipe away all questions or doubts (esp. if they are already a "doubter") is fooling themselves... because if this album is anything like Voodoo (and the imagery and hints suggest it is), then it's probably going to be intended as an *album*.... pick any track off Voodoo besides the aforementioned, and they stand on their own for sure but they make much more sense in the context of the whole (imo).

As far as this project is concerned with the current state of the biz
Someone put all their chips on him in hopes of a big win.
15 years in the electric lady wasn't cheap.

The quality of the record isn't the concern
Dude will deliver
And WE will support
The question is will it get over to the other side enough for folks to see a return on investment.
Ain't no way they're into this expecting to lose.

I'm not sure how successful the US shows were a few years ago.
Did the MJB tour bring folks out....did the shows sell out?
He will get US to come out along with the so-called hipster crowd.
Will he get the Essence fest crowd?
Based on their reaction to the performance a few years ago....time will tell.

i will stop the armchair analysis for now
i am excited for him
all jokes aside, it was a huge thing for him to let this project go
I'm just trying to be realistic about the public reaction to his return

i love the sparseness of this track.

it's catchy, uptempo, funky and feel-good.

good ingredients to peak interest for the record.

not sure if they see this as the money track(s).

i'd say the money track is 'another life'.

they're probably saving that for later (as with untitled for voodoo).

he didn't work on this for 15 years.

i think he has a totally diff work ethic than most (meaning no work ethic).

the mumble is whatever. it didn't really bother me on voodoo.

he might have lyrics now, but took too long to re-record.

the label probably just ordered to distort some mumbles to finish the product.

not a BIG single

but a strong song to let people know hes back

its a weird choice, its a funk jam, not a catchy radio song

but it shows him as someone not compromising (though its also pretty upbeat, so its not like its too dark), not interested in competing with dj mustard or whoever

Hey Rainbowchild! Fancy seeing you here! It's been a while! Lots of D'angelo action going on! Seems to be the big moment we've been hoping for!

4, if you want the encore of the character.

Mr. Archer is no different. We got his 1994/95 intro where we were all introduced & bonded with the guy.

His second act, where there were some endearing foilibles, some misgivings, transgressions, growth & discoveries. Stones were left unturned & im certain most of us felt that redemption was needed, or that he left his business unresolved.

Now we on to act 3? Redemption!

Y'know, he banks on the fact that nobody knows what the hell he's saying. I mean, he got on BET awards and performed quite a few times singing about queefs and we're just like, "...yeah totally man, whatever you say". I'm sure his camp has been laughing about that for a while now.

I tend to not have expectations on albums before I hear them, but I know some of us here don't have that in us. However I figured having the hyperbole in one place would keep the thread tidy.
This also goes for the people that will hate it when it drops, then force themselves to listen to it until they like it.

considering that I haven't said anything about being unimpressed. But I do however think it's more plausible to listen to a work without a high or low expectation because you're not caught up in the hype either way.

Agreed - everything about that track is wonderful... the layers, the restrained chaos that feels like it's about to spin out of control, the drums (!), and the undoubted nod to Riot on the bass in the intro and outro --- gorgeous stuff.

Jesus - the album has been out for a few hours - circulating for a few days - simmering for *15 years* and you have already signed, sealed, delivered a final opinion on its place in his (admittedly small) discography?

My humble proposal: let's all just listen and enjoy... worry about contextualizing, situating, categorizing, ranking, assigning quantitative and qualitative merits and demerits until we've actually had a chance to soak it in a bit...

Almost done with my first listen.
Betray My Heart stood out to now.
Another Day just about to start.
Gonna finish that one, then off to sleep.
I just "got" twigs, and now she's bumped.
This for the next several days at least.
